      yeah being they are Zippo I get why they used the spark wheel and flint but its just not going to throw hot enough sparks to light natural tinder easily...someone mentioned cotton balls which would be fine but it isnt meant to be used with the tool, its suppose to work on its own with what you find in the wild, it would be ok if you find yourself lost in a cotton field though lol...

    I have spark wheel fire starters that use tinder tabs (and Zippo sells the same thing) but the tabs have to be fluffed up to catch the sparks. There are military fire starters that are identical to mine. I think these flint wheels are really designed for different tinder, not for particles of wood. I’m surprised it ignited the waxed cords. Pack some cotton balls or tinder tabs and it will work on them. You can also light an alcohol stove with a spark wheel.

    I got mine yesterday from a store. The knife has a sharp point, and all the screws are tight. It's a lot easier to light the fire cord if you fray the ends instead of pulling it apart and trying to light the middle of the red part.

    hey i dont know if you ever noticed but there is a little curly line with an arrow under the striker wheel (its even in your video) you open it all the way and use your thumb or your index finger to strike it in the Opposite direction you where doing it to Throw sparks and ignite things it makes me less confident in your other reviews that you made such a simple error. it has plenty of support and works well if you just flip the tool around in your hand the side with the angle is the spot the sparks come from

      @@Jmon0421 a full sized Ferro rod would have been able to light the shavings from the tool, so it’s not unreasonable to expect those shavings to take a spark particularly considering that with the way this thing is marketed it’s kinda implied that you can use it to ignite the shavings you make with it. one thing you need to try is "grinding" some of the flint off into a pile, then spark that. kinda like a fire stick. try it on a table or something first so you can see what's happening. Slowly turn the wheel close to the surface you need to spark up. after a bit, you will notice a pile of really light black powder forming. now, the moment you hit that with a spark, it will catch and a few of the pieces will burn for a significantly longer time than a normal liter strike. it will obviously eat away at the flint faster than normal, but hey, it's replaceable.

  • @jock-of-ages73

    The flint is for a standard lighter, the sparks aren't as hot as ferro rod sparks, which is not good. The grater is a good idea, i've seen the little box versions and they do collect a lot of wood shavings. It's very 'meh'

    • @evanf1443
      @evanf1443 3 роки тому

      The flint is a ferro rod. Same materials, just a lot less of it. It’s not that the sparks are not as hot, it’s that there are so many less than them, and potentially that they’re smaller due to the way it’s being scraped. It greatly reduces the odds that anything will hit and have it catch.

    • @jock-of-ages73
      @jock-of-ages73 3 роки тому +1

      @@evanf1443 You're right, but scrape off some unburned bits onto the palm of your hand from both and then light them, you will feel the difference. I think It's because the sparks are larger from a ferro rod and glow longer that they can reach a higher temp. You even notice a difference between some ferro rods, some have pissy little sparks, others are like Roman candles.

    I'm surprised how well that grater worked... But with the cord, would it have been better to scrape it with the knife blade? To get the fibers out, and shave off some wax (hindsight, and all).
    And another question on the cord, you added the white strands, but not the outer black sleeve. Are those both standard paracord were it's... nylon? instead of something like cotton (melt vs burn); not to say something about the fumes, just asking out of curiosity

    I have one. I've had it for a while and just using the video as reference, you made the fire incorrectly. Cannot believe you started and used all of the wax line. Char cloth. Not to start an argument, but you used the tinder on top of the wood, then there was the editing.
    No. It's not a bow saw, nor a complete tool kit.
    It works fine for me. I do use the grater but mostly the char cloth and it is hot enough for the cloth and dry plant material.
    First you need to build a bird nest, blow and get it started then apply it to the camp fire. Presto-easy fire!
    Mine works fine. I think you should spend more time learning to make fire using flint and steel.
    This is not meant to be a camp Bowie or bow saw. It will and does make fire.
    If you're not happy with it, that's your business, but a poor carpenter blames his tools.
    Learn to make a fire without a lighter. That is your biggest impediment to using this device.
    Your correct. If you can't build a fire, then carrying bic lighters and fire starters are for you and NOT this tool

    stupid idea! useless product!. grater does exactly what a knife can do. you don't need both. choose one. bottle opener is useless, not needed on a tool that makes fire. saw blade is bad. lose the knife if you wanna go grater route, lose the bottle opener and screw driver (why the f would you have a screwdriver on a fire tool???) and invest that money into a better and longer saw and fire steel. you need only 3 things to make fire relatively fast with optimal ratio between success rate and weight of the equipment: saw, knife and fire steel.

    • @evanf1443
      @evanf1443 3 роки тому

      The grater is a good idea for making tinder that can catch a spark particularly in wet conditions when your only real chance is to use the dry inside of wood anyway, and plenty of reliable emergency fire starters use a flint wheel like that. It’s just that a flint wheel is better suited to carrying tinder with you (most of the aforementioned fire starters come with water tight containers for that very purpose) while a full sized ferro rod would be better suited to lighting the heavier tinder that would be produced with the wood shaving tool. They’re both good tools, they’re just not meant to go together this way.
