    Nice kit.
    If you want to think long-term survival , I would have to add one thing, a steel striker (for a flint-and-steel fire).
    Everything in your kit will eventually run out except the lens, and it could break. A steel striker lasts virtually forever and will always make a spark if you can find flint, chert, quartz, or any rock of proper hardness.

    Cotton face pads soaked in wax. The wax keeps them dry, fluff it and throw a spark. Also dryer lint. Same way

    Pretty cool . This cooler weather definitely makes you want to go camping. Working 6 - 12’s but got off early Saturday. Grabbed my son and drove to Toledo Bend. Beautiful 52 degrees Sunday morning. Thanks for sharing

    Instead of a bic i carry a clipper lighter because it can be refilled and you can replace the flint and if you run out of fuel the whole striker flint and wheel comes out so you can use it for striking fires without fuel. I also have a cheap cheese grater thats flat like a sheet of paper i use to shave down sticks. Great kit.

    Have you ever thought of putting a desicant pouch in with your tinder shavings?
    Pro tip:. Put your 1/2 inch or larger diameter ferro rods in a vice and cut them down the middle with a coping saw. Now you have TWO really awesome spark showering rods because of the increased surface contact with the striker (2=1;1=0).
    You might also consider rolling up a quart freezer bag for collecting and drying tinder with that desicant pouch I was talking about adding.
    Lastly, I prefer using a metal frames pencil sharpener, since a plastic one could get brittle and break in extreme weather conditions.

    Great kit ....suppose you could add a Fresnel magnifying lens putting it at the bottom of your Plano container as its the size of a credit card, as light, and as flat as a pancake. Also some gaffer tape tapped around your Altoids tin...good burner just like your Ranger bands. And maybe some steel wool.

  • @mawa8439

  • @pjanoo6973
    @pjanoo6973 4 роки тому

    A ferrous rod is literally the only true necessity, lasts longer than a lighter and is waterproof and you can almost always find dry tinder even in wet and snowy conditions and worse case scenario use a rock to strike the rod.

  • @ericathompsen8110
    @ericathompsen8110 2 роки тому

    The only thing I would add is two or three cotton bandanas and fold them the length of your kit and then tie them or secure them to the outside rather it be through rope duct tape or even using tard Bank line because you'd be using that to attach to the outside of one side which would be the back of it most likely so you can still get in it relatively easy that's what I would do to make it a little bit better because with the metal tin you have you could use that to make charred cloth. Otherwise in that your kit is pretty decent. And I enjoyed watching your video thank you for making it and keep doing what you're doing man you're awesome.

    Nice set up. Adding a glow stick as a back up light source might help for those low light situations. Just in case you forgot your 5 flashlights you will at the least have something as a back up. Starting a fire at night can be a little difficult and takes a lot longer that it would in the day. You never know when you might need a fire on the fly.

    I came up with a fire start by accident, I was cutting cardboard with a handsaw to downsize it and noticed a "cardboard sawdust' appear. I gathered it, light it, and poof.
    Cool. So Now I wanna stuff a shitload into an airtight weed container and put it into my firestart kit.
    Give it a shot, but before you do, please sweep the floor all around the area you are cutting. Gather ALL of the "Cardboard sawdust" and sweep after you are done cutting.
    This will prevent stupid fire accidents....
    Use fire responsibly, please...

    I got a bitch on terminology. Nip pick actually.
    When you (and most others) call a fire kit I call a FIRE and TENDER kit. Fire kits are ways to create a fire. A Tender Kit is the tender your fire kit uses to get the fire burning enough. You can put a half dozen fire starting methods in an Altoids and a bunch of tender into a DIFFERENT Altoids

    You mentioned the Apocabox in this video, and was wondering if you had tried Creek’s fire course The Art of Fire? My husband and I have been through it, I’m doing a refresher now going through the whole thing again. It’s so worth the money. I never dreamed there were so many ways to start a fire.

    Good video, I like the amount of tinder sources that you include. I bugs me when people have something like three tinder quick tabs in they're kit thinking they'll be fine, I carry eight in my wallet alone, as well a gauze pad and duct tape on my lighter. Combined with my pocket knife I can start several fires and address a major point that I fear many ignore. Thanks

      No problem. I agree. I feel to many people overestimate their inner rambo. I did.... and got a cold hard lesson back in Indiana when I couldnt start a fire in 35 degree weather with wind and rain for over 2 hours... It had me thinking..... pretty seriously about my future builds and training
