- Howdy! Fellow adventurers. In this episode, Wavey and I enter the Tenn-Tom Waterway. It's a long (450 miles) and often overlooked leg of the great loop. I hope the next few episodes reveal to you that it's also one of the most peaceful and natural segments of the adventure.

I love the interaction with the lock master.
Love those kind of Lock Operators that enjoy their job!
I really enjoyed the radio conversation with the curious lockmaster.
Thank you for acknowledging my state ❤
Lock operators are typically so great! I needed a part while on the Erie canal & the lock tender called his wife and she delivered it to me. Absolutely fantastic. Love the towns and coves you find. Mississippi, definitely underrated..the residents probably prefer it that way!
That was a fun ride! True, you do feel small and alone when on the water in some of those isolated places! I love that feeling! Living by the longest freshwater beach in the world (I know you'll have a Superior comment to that! Lol!) We simply boat straignt out into the bay and the loud noise fades and the crouds of people become dots on the horizon as we swim around our boat alone! As it may have been thousands of years ago!!! Priceless! BestRoy
You Roy, know what I'm trying to say ;) I'm always too afraid to swim around the boat way out in the lake. My imagination takes hold and you'd laugh if I told you what I think is swimming below us. I need to do some fear conquering this summer.
@@backwatersandbackroadsDon't Bull Sharks come up the Mississippi?
By chance, are ya feeding that phobia? lol.@@roydesignedthat
@@IntheBlood67 I feed, and you can decide to eat or no. Lol! AllthebestRoy
The first lock after the ditch is the tallest lock in the us at 84 ft, when at the bottom looking up quite impressive! After that 14 more locks and lakes, good fishing, really enjoyed it, good place to spend the winter by Bobs fish camp. Keep up the good videos!
That was a high lock! I knew it had to be one of the highest. Bobby's fish camp ain't what it use to be. You'll see....:(
I believe the highest is john day lock and dam on the Columbia River it's 113 feet maximum 84 is still huge
@@bensmith4563 Wow thank you for the info, that is enormous hope I get there some day.
Bay Springs is my home port I’m sure the folks at Fulton, Midway Marina, treated you kindly. N they love for transients to spend holidays with them! Safe travels. 22:07
Squirrels for breakfast ;)
I think the lock master is going to build his own shanty boat now, he pretty much has the recipe. :)
I think he's kinda lonesome!
That's a dude that's dreamed of doing the loop for a little bit.
The first bridge you came to when you entered the Tenn-Tom waterway was scruggs boat ramp area, hwy 25 bridge ,first town was burnsville ms
What a kind lockmaster. Those locks make me nervous. That might be the reason I don't do the loop, but only portions of it that don't have locks. I admire
your bravery, you're learning a lot. Thanks for sharing it all. It is pretty amazing.Great feats of engineering.😊
Good to see a new "underway on the river" video. Something about watching your videos about being on the rivers that I just love and I like that you have done this part of the trip in the winter which is something you don't usually see, but a young couple that did the Loop on their 30 plus year old diesel Trawler, came down this part of the Loop in the winter too. They have released their videos at the speed that they could beat do so and in video time, they are almost back to the point of "Crossing their Wake" and finishing the Loop in Key West, but in real time, they finished the Loop over a year ago now. I say just put out your videos as you can and don't worry about how far behind you might be video wise from real world time. The trip is the point of doing a fantastic trip like this is the trip and the places, things and people encountered along the way. If you wanted to take a fast trip from Point A to B, just get on the interstates and haul booty! Sometimes that is the way you have to travel. It's gets it done fast but it's not very interesting!
Agreed. One "problem" is, when we finish the loop, summer adventures I the Northland will be happening. Staying fairly current will help in making those. The adventures never end ;) stay tuned...
I just started watching your videos and am truly loving them. Thanks for sharing..
Thank you Steve. I'm glad you found us
I Love your Boat, so much simpler then the big boys. You have a great setup. I hope you have a fun time!
Thank you Claire. I'm glad you found us ;)
When I was discharged from the Navy in 1981 I went to work on the river. Not enough space to tell you all the rivers. Probably my favourite was Arkansas River and Tennessee River. Ohio is not good but upper Mississippi was great. I envy you, I put in 10 years and still think back daily about it. Be safe and enjoy, never know this old man might just do the Loop and keep going lol
Can you tell me/us more about the Ohio? And why you'd consider it not good?
@@backwatersandbackroads I think for me and you have to remember my last trip on the Ohio was in 1988. It was very polluted and the locks were in rough shape. As are most of them, now right up there as far as polluted is the Upper Illinois as you might have seen. I was raised on the Upper Mississippi Pool 18 Oquawka Illinois. My father built Mach I and Envision Boats for years and I was driving a boat on the river as young as 10. I'll a bona fide River Rat and a better person for it. Upper Lower Mississippi, Missouri River, Arkansas River Ohio River tombigbee waterway Tennessee River up to chickamauga lock, Mobile Bay up the black Warrior River that was an experience. Ocean going tug from Tampa Bay Corpus Christi Texas back around to Jacksonville FL. Best eats in the business working on line boats.
@Mach11976 you were born on the water. I got here as fast as I could ;) I did see how polluted the Illinois was/is. I even caught somw kind of rash from it back on the first trip
@@backwatersandbackroads I remember a lock on the Illinois, Lockport to exact. Some of the stuff you see as you're sitting in the lock I wouldn't describe here lol you can imagine. Turn off fertilizer and wastewater has been pumped into that River for years unfortunately. I still love it as a river. In my DNA.
Great job is always guys as always. I'm from Northern Wisconsin and have traveled extensively through mississippi. In a lot of ways the geography is similar with lots of trees and lakes and hills just like wisconsin. The big difference is in Wisconsin there are taverns every few miles and in Mississippi there are Baptist Churches every few miles.🎚️😮
Thank you for sharing. Very interesting going through those locks.
Hi Becky. Thanks for finding us
Another FANTASTIC video. I was just kidding about that 5 videos a week. I was just dreaming & hoping.
Gonna be 2 or 3 here for a while ;)
@@backwatersandbackroadsI'll take it.
Man those locks are huge over there in America. Nice video 🇩🇪🐬🇺🇸
33:38--Yep, Wavey Girl, you done did good on a long day out on the water. Long, yet some of our shortest days of the year, those leading up to and just after, Christmas. Amazing to have all that waterway to yourselves and just a couple other towboats. The seclusion of it all just comes through on those empty vistas.
I enjoy watching your adventures. I was pleasantly surprised to see a town you went through recently. It was Savannah Tennessee. That white beautiful plantation home you showed is the Cherry mansion. The town was part of the civil war at the battle of Shiloh. There’s a museum and a historical park .
I visited Shiloh memorial, there's a link in the description of the latest video

Hi Ron! Thanks for finding us. I kind of figured that, it's too nice to not be developed otherwise
Thanks for sharing the adventure, keep’’em coming skipper!
We went from Vicksburg to the Natchez trail. Drove it for a few hours. It was lovely.
Great piece. Thanks again.
Thank you so very much for your compliments about Mississippi.
Just the facts, mam, just the facts ;) Love Mississippi
Great job on the last two videos! I really appreciated the calm, secluded scenes of the water. It's so relaxing. The scooter adventure was amazing too, well maybe not so much for you and Wavey in that crazy monsoon of a storm! I just bought my first scooter last July and already have 1k miles on it. Boating and scooter adventures, if I can't get out to do them because of winter I can certainly enjoy them by watching my favorite UA-cam channel. Oh, by the way, we lived in Minnesota and are very familiar with your neck of the woods. Look forward to the next video!
Thank you Susanne, and thank you for being a member of the channel. What kind of scooter did you buy? Where in Minnesota did you guys live? Summer is coming fast? I sure wouldn't want to spend it in Florida, it's already too hot down here
@backwatersandbackroads we lived in Woodbury for 12 years and did a lot of boating on the Mississippi and St. Croix. We also went up to Brainard quite a bit. I was so sad to leave Minnesota (work thing) and hope to move back but it's crazy how much it has changed. I still visit often, after all they have the BEST state fair! Oh, the scooter is a Bintelli 49cc. Since I'm learning still I didn't want to go too powerful, lol. At a max speed of 35 mph I'm really taking the backroads and loving it!
@susannally8979 That's a good way to start. I have a couple 49cc scoots myself;) Minnesota is a misunderstood state. I could say a lot about it.
The Corps of Engineers own that land.
I recently poked around to see what happened to all of the spoil generated when they dug the Tenn Tom waterway. One source stated the spoil was placed in nearby valleys. My guess is the Sedimentation Range sign may denote an area where the spoil was dumped.
That makes sense!
Video is amazing man ditch does not seem so bad… that lock and damn bell seems more like a prison siren lol.. man I can’t wait to be on the water went to the boat today and fixed the problem on my toilets so much fun man
Another great video, thanks for taking us along 👍👍

You do a great job at keeping these videos interesting and I appreciate you working on them to eventually catch up to present time.
I think the lock master was very impressed with your Shanty boat since he was very interested in it
Thank you Karen. I learned from the original Shanty Boat Beagle Adventure 5 years ago that people will find our series years later. I better do the best job I can :) I ALWAYS start a video thinking "this is going to be boring and terrible" by the end, I almost always feel it turned out worth watching;) Thanks for sticking around. Eventually this adventure will wrap up, and folks will decide whether to continue being interested in what we do. I hope they do ;) YT is a fickle thing

Really enjoyed video keep up the great work. I like that some lock operators will have conversation and the beauty and loneliness of the river is what i enjoy the most and the big fish in tombigbee. Safe travels and keep on keeping on.
Thank you. I'm ashamed we haven't been fishing much. Strangely, we feel like we have to keep moving a little everyday. It's a busy life. Not complicated really, just 100 things a day to do and stay aware of. Ep:27 coming up...
@backwatersandbackroads hope you get to take time to fish . Keeping up with videos and being a beagle tender is a full time job but you are doing great and like you say some people have real problems.

I am for the first time watching this series. As far as I know, it helps channels to comment. I'm going to do that more as I watch. And I agree, Ben & Jerry's puts the biggest idiots on their ice. I don't cave often but when I do it's so irritating to see Stephen Colbert in my freezer. 🙄😂

Ok I’m confused. When you started out, you had an inflatable dinghy, now you’re pulling a kayak, and where did the other dinghy come from that you took Wavey to the island on? Please explain. I see the inflatable under your scooter.
We deflated the inflatable and picked up a kayak. We since have given the inflatable to a buddy ans have a Portland Pudgy (coming in future episodes) we're a couple months behind in UA-cam time.

Damn. Now I know I'm old. I heard that lock siren and immediately thought "Air Raid!" and for a moment wondered where the nearest bunker was. Great video, Brenton. I'll admit I've been looking, looking, looking every day hoping you'd have your newest installment and -- as Mel Fisher used to say -- "Today's the day!" The drone is a great idea. I got one a couple of years ago but ended up not using it because it requires some kind of FAA license. I didn't get around to getting it before the batteries -- expensive Mantis batteries -- decided to swell up and become unchargable. Anyway, check out whether you need a license or not before you post any drone video footage and some A-hole reports you to one of the alphabet agencies. I -- like many, many others -- am really enjoying your trip on the Great Loop. You and wavy have a way of making it all very pleasant and interesting and I start feeling a little sad as each episode comes to its end. But the good news is that another installment will be along soon. Thanks again for some great videos!
Man, this makes me feel so good. Thank you for appreciating these videos. I will ask about the drone license. I pretty sure we don't need one, just can't fly in restricted places. The app won't let you fly in one. Working on ep:27 now...

just heard that your shanty boat is built on an aluminum barge, do you have any flotation in that?
No under floor flotation. I do have a long build series here on the channel. Probably top long! Lol
I started with episode 1 on this adventure. I’m really enjoying the episodes. But I just realized you changed out your dingy. With the first couple times you looked out back and I saw a kayak behind you instead of your inflatable I thought it was more flash backs. then I saw the plastic dingy. I guess I must of missed something somewhere.
We've experimented with a lot of dinks. The inflatable was deflated and rolled up until I could get it off the boat. The kayaks are back up to get to shore. The Portland Pudgy came later in Florida and solved all the dink problems ;)
