Mollies can live in fresh, brackish, or salt water as long as your change the water salinity gradually.
Absolutely
Im not really into the classic reef tank with the super blue light and same "reef safe fish" everyone has and you show whats possible outside of that. ive been planning a macro algae biotope tank for a lil bit and this channel has been a great inspiration.
Glad to hear it. Thanks for watching
I have absolutely zero interest in marine tanks, but I like your content and the fact you try different things. Keep on going, I've certainly learnt a few bits from you.
Oh thanks! Unfortunately I don't have the space to do freshwater and marine at the moment
Enjoy keeping aquariums people, no matter what you want to keep in them!
I Honestly Love your diverse Tanks and thy look Amazing . I like that you are different and that the reason I watch your channel . Happy Fish Keeping 🥰
I appreciate that! Thanks for sticking with me
@@EverydayAquarist 😁
I'm very glad to see that someone else is trying something different. One thing I've been jealous of the freshwater the vast variety of aquaecapes they can do. While in saltwater seems the farthest people will go is no sand or purple rock rather than white or something else boring. I love your channel for this reason and I'm also trying something different.
Appreciate it
I have only just found you, ads I was researching an upgrade for my tank lighting. Your interest in Macro Algae is wonderful!
I have always been a Native Marine Aquarist (my home base is Cornwall), and of course with frequent collecting trips, my aquaria, never really establish in a biome sense. The nutrient levels are all over the place, an introduced species takes out the balance if any ever establishes etc etc. But it is never the less fascinating as winter approaches, visits to the beach become fewer and stability of the system kicks in. Macro algae is not easy sometimes as at present my lighting I feel is inadequate, as well as far too many grazing species (but I do so love Urchins, the muggers). Have you ever considered or kept a native tank? I'm would love to see the result, as your 'ethos' in an aquarist sense I detect as both a personal pilgrimage and Investigator of potentials. All the best .
Hi yes I have always wanted to but I live in Central Somerset, not to far from you. Far enough from the sea to not make it easy. One day I'll take the plunge
I love marine macro algae tanks, just spectacular :)
Me too
You have inspired me to in the future try out set up my own macro algae! Really appreciate your content
Great to hear
Don't let them get you down mate you keep doing what your doing.
👍Sure will
Very nice! I love these little glimpses into what causes macro to make it or not make it. One day I would like to try macro again and have it succeed 🙂
Thanks for watching
a few days ago i came back from holiday and my 4 foot tank was almost empty due to the rubbish aquamanta canister filter tube getting loose and gushing water all over the floor and flooding water all over my room and seeping through the wall and ruining an internal filter and a heater too. luckily all but 1 fish survived [ a synodontis nigriventris ]
I'll come from the opposite direction and say: what I fell in love with and what drew me to Marine systems was the Coral.
And I still adore seeing how many lagoon and macro algae based systems you have. As you said, true reefs are quite rare in the broader ocean. The main stream hobby misses out on the diversity of say macro algae or sea grass beds, expansive sand flats, and rubble fields as just a small set of examples.
Well done on representing a broader horizon.
Thank you. I love corals too, I just prefer to explore new frontiers
Hope you and the family are well mate. The tank room is looking great these days, love your tanks and style
Thanks, we are well 👍Fish room is getting there, still a lot to do!
We should difference between REEF Tank and Saltwater Tank. i Don´t have a Reeftank, i have a saltwater Lagoon tank.
i think keeping Macros is even harder than some low/medium Corals. The coral can look good for a Week when something is missing. Caulerpa, po4 goes to 0, instant meltdown :D
For the Mollies, yeah they are no Reef fish, but better keep mollies and let them do the job, instead getting a fish which is to big for the tank to do the same.
And yes, in Saltwater they are healthier
I have been calling them "planted reefs" but yes they aren't reef tanks at all
That's mainly why I follow this channel. Almost everyone tries to replicate aquariums they have seen in magazines, photos or Instagram, but they do not try anything different. I'm like that and that is why I know that the range of failure is much greater than trying to do something that has already been done many times, but that way you learn new things. Regarding the comment you mention, this person has not understood or does not know that your channel is for that, to do different things and to care for plants and animals to live well. But also to create new aquatic scenarios, combinations and simply try new things. I used to have a 700 liter aquarium full with mollies and all the visitors I had at home thought it was a marine aquarium and it was just a freshwater aquarium with mollies and some guppies 🤣 Having a reef with mollies is not only sustainable, it is also attractive and before I saw this channel I did not know it 💡👍 - Ramon 🇲🇽
Thank you. I might explore saltwater guppies next
@@EverydayAquarist Is that possible too? :O
Here's a excellent comment for you...that vest is on point 👌🏼
When I first learned that mollies like brackish water I was SUPER impressed. Sod the Gatekeepers. You do you. You do it pretty well and you've got my views.
Haha thanks I shaved my beard too
@@EverydayAquarist I noticed lol, looking super trim today 💪🏼
That was a nice treat at the end. 👍
Thanks mate. How's the Hygger light doing?
@@EverydayAquarist I'm loving it. Way more than I thought I would to be honest.
I love the diversity. This has been a favorite of mine since living in FL. Have you tried deep substrate? GARF developed this to a science. All of my tanks are deep substrate, salt and fresh. I never have the problems caused by waste in the water column.
Thanks. I have in a previous tank and yes deep substrate is absolutely the way to go
@@EverydayAquarist Salt enthusiasts have a better understanding of deep substrate than fresh water hobbyists.
That's the type of snobbery(?) that almost put me off aquascaping. So many times on forums I'd see people who were proud of their tanks be absolutely ripped up in the comments, and so many times I'd be discussing something with a fellow newbie and then in comes an expert with an attitude. Thankfully through the years though the community has gotten much kinder and are almost always supportive. Really interesting to see that mollies can be kept in saltwater though, I'd have never known
Yeah it can be like that but thankfully those types of people are rarer now
Read the molly comment right before seeing this one..
Thought it was just a newbie, wondering why anyone would do it.. So, I answered it.
All good.
I think you should take pride in whatever you do, how you do it and what it may involve. As long everything is being taked care of and it puts a smile on your face. And one or two sweat pearls on the forehead!
Thanks 👍
I'm trying to make an aesthetic leech tank lol, we all have our tastes
😂 Go for it
I love saltwater mollies, something you don't see too often
Me to!
I keep mollies in my reef tanks in my brackish tanks and in my freshwater your tank do what u want lol
Love this vid! Learned something new
Macro algae tanks are my favorite 😁🤘
That tank in 1:48 is stunning beautiful. I want get in to aquarium marine and warm water 🐟🎏 In Near future
Thanks. It's got that natural look
I agree with you 100%, All I can say bud is you keep do you and just let them do them. Great looking tanks, I love the macro algae.
Thanks
I subbed , also I made it to the end.
Legend
I am slowly filling a reefer XL200 with LPS corals and the only fish in it are mollies so far 😅and it's great, my nano has clowns and damsels and a little wrasse, mollies makes a nice change 🤟
Noice
This channel has always been a great source for such a very diverse hobby of fish keeping & all sorts of other fascinating creatures from each corner of the Universe and beyond 🌌☄🛸🚢🌊
Thanks
I enjoy your videos and your are correct . There are many ways to skin a cat (pardon the pun). We gave SPS reefs as beautiful as they are rammed down our throats and they are not the only way. I got roasted because I liked a discus tank with rust red substrate and to be honest we should respect people’s individual take on a theme.
Great content .
Hello Master of All things Macroalgae. I have a question. Have you every tried acclimating Heterandria formosa (Least Killifish-world smalleslt livebearer) into saltwater/ macroalgae tanks? They eat algae and are 2-3 cm long. Supposedly they can be found in some brackish waters in North America but I haven’t found much info on them.
No I haven't even seen them
@@EverydayAquarist I see, I kinda want to try them out but Im not sure about their salt tolerance
I am interested in salt water but love plants. I was just wondering about this.
Did you turn up the flow in this tank? Looks more turbulent than in the last videos
I put a small powerhead in it
Good 👍
Thanks
Does keeping mollies in saltwater provide them with their best life? Would like to but not sure on this question. I have a macro algae tank.
I know you are having success but I see failures with different variations of Molly
Latipinna-True sailfin moliies are the only ones I recommend. They are commonly found in brackish and salt water in the wild. Other species struggle
Have you kept mollies with clown fish always wanted to know if they would get on
In a large tank it will be OK but not in anything less than 3 foot. They will eat the babies though
Unless you’re competing, or have the money to have a professional manage it, keep it simple. More space for the fish, easier to clean, easier to monitor levels. KISS
lol. got the same comments about my video on Mollies. As someone who lived in both Cal and FL, I have seen mollies in Fresh, Brackish and Salt water. In fact I use to get Mollies or my tanks because they are great algae destroyers.
As a Diver, and aquarist there is numerous environments that are not represented well in the Hobby. Cold water, Flats, Tidal Zones and Brackish etc. I have seen Tarpon in Fresh-water and Largemouth Bass in brackish. For me I love all the environments of the Hobby and plan to do a cold-water in time, I want Catalina Goby and some cold water Algae to be in the same tank. But that will have to wait until the Dartfrog tanks is built :)
That would be an epic tank
@@EverydayAquarist
The Coldwater will be a simple humble 10gallon to showcase the Goby.
I recommend not getting triggered, this caused you to make a lot of statements that will and have triggered the average saltwater aquarist...
The cycle continues, they can make a video about me
Any time I see Mollies they just look like normal ugly basic fish second to goldfish, but to each their own I guess. Spending all this money to create a nice tank then throw mollies in there lmao.
It was not my intention to upset or trigger you. They are your tanks and it's your channel to post what ever you want. I obviously find what you do interesting otherwise I wouldn't watch it or take the time to comment.. But also with that you cannot expect all viewers to agree with everything being said or done. I have no issues with macro lagoons or biotope tanks, infact there is a UK guy who did one with only uk species of fish, algae and crabs ect which was great. That is a biotope. All I said was I don't get the Mollies which are ultimately a fresh water fish, yes they go into brackish water but that is not where they generally live. It's just an opinion and as a content maker you will come accross many of them, unfortunatly opinions are like backsides everyone has one and on this instance ours differ. That is fine and my comment was not ment to detract you from your hobby. I have had a number of fresh and salt water aquariums at varying levels of complexity and I think there is room for in the hobby for all of them I am in no way a gate keeper just somone with an opinion.
No hard feelings 👍I appreciate the comment
Mollies are a euryhaline species though, they are literally found from estuaries and reefs that infringe mangroves, to rainwater ditches and freshwater streams in the wild. So I wouldn’t say that they are “ultimately” a freshwater fish. Some species have a higher need for salt content, some tolerate it, some don’t need it at all.
I considered putting mollies into my saltwater tank to control algae issues as did Reefgrll ( youtube mollywood ) cheers for all your post 👍
Trailblazers are often misunderstood for their risky ventures. However, soon after everyone catches on, we tend to forget the original individuals who brought us all up to speed🫡.
Humans can be so short-sighted and thankless.
