A natural reef is a diverse ecosytem and in our aquariums it should be the same idea. In this video i take a look at some amphipods and other minibeasts in my aquarium.

I just started with marine aquariums but i had freshwater ones for almost 2 decades and i was a commercial fish breeder and got fish from nature to for trying to breed in captivity, some i did, and had hundreds of species in aquarium and i reproduced successfully many dozens to. I always tried to give my fishes a natural as possible environment and i learned long long time ago that algae and these small critters are not bad and are extremely important for a healthy aquarium ecosystem. I had freshwater aquariums that where so established and balanced that would run 1 year plus without any water change with crystal clear clean water, i only had to add what was evaporating. They where full of vegetation, some algae, bacteria and small worms in sand and other small critters and snails and what not, but where a perfect ballanced ecosyste with fishes and invertebrates and plants and everything else. Anyway i just got a huge live rock stone for my saltwater aquarium and is full with these small critters and some bristle worms. I have no fish yet because is cycling right now but man i love to see these small copepods already running around my stone and the worms travelling all over the stone. so much life on just a piece of rock.

I got a £20 hang on the side filter. put bio media in ie Holy stones. A few £2 bags of cooperpods now every hole im my live rock looks like a disc.

Indeed I think a micro culture is very important but if u look at my recent short u can see an amphipod eating a zoa
I don't have a reef tank so don't know all the animals, but the ones you ended the footage with look like shrimps I think. One was pregnant if I'm not mistaken? Thanks for the video. Really liked it👍.

Hey question, I have found that my protein skimmer always ends up killing my copepod and amphipod populations since the only place my skimmer fits is sitting in the refugium. When I take out or turn off my skimmer for a few weeks, the populations tend to rebound, but then I of course lose one of my central forms of water cleaning, and a lot more of the proteins from fish waste are left in the water. Now luckily I have a strong cleaning crew and minimal fish, but I was wondering how one balances protein skimming and also keeping all these micro populations alive. Thanks for another informative video!

Do you feed phytoplankton? Also did you seed your tank or rely on live rock?
