Single mothers face a continuous culture of shame in Japan. For this interview, we meet a single mother who gave birth out of wedlock and is currently working as a model. We get an in-depth look at her struggles with depression and suicide, and how this affected her relationship with her daughter.

So true. These are the kind of things that people should be educated and be aware of, not just in Japan but everywhere.
@@JD-kp6pt why do people do this? They weren't talking about other countries,they're talking about Japan. Can you imagine trying to have a conversation with someone about something important to you when suddenly the other person goes "well that situation happened to such-and-such." I get it, but doesn't it seem sort of like your own problem is being dismissed? Wouldn't it be nice if the other person actually tried to help you with your problem and seemed like it actually mattered by not bringing up someone else.

I think mental health, abuse and other related topics are kind of taboo in Asia (at least in some coutries of Asia)
My respect to those cops arresting the abuser and getting her to a mental facility for treatment. Sometimes these little things are overlooked, even law enforcement and government assistance get discredited often.
I'm glad they did what they did. She might not be here today if it wasn't for them.
My respect to the neighbours who reported it. Normally people just ignore it.
Sadly if this was US cops they would probably lock her up too and do much worse things

She’s gorgeous, depression is tough. “Suffocating Mindset”, at least she had that figured out. She dealt with emotional, physical and mental abuse. Not living up to parent’s expectations. Divorce, a serial cheater. Suicide attempts. Her precious daughter is her reason to keep pushing. “Live your Life as you want!” Good advice. I wish her well.
She's such an inspiration, facing those problems all at once but pushing through it. The man who made her suffer is so weird, why ruin something so precious. He was lucky to have her and a daughter, sadly he is blind to see such blessings.

I’m being raised by a single mother with my older brother and I realize how much trouble we cause her and how much she does to make us the best people we can possibly be. I love my my mom to death. The smartest thing she’s ever done was teach my us how to value ourselves, who to value, how to be happy, and to be humble. From that alone, we naturally learned how to grow into men by having the curiosity and intelligence to teach ourselves. I’m so great full to have a mother like her. I knew a friend and his mom since 4th grade and in 7th grade, his mom died in a car accident. Because of that, I learned the hard way that the most you could ever lose in your life is another human soul. But life is life, we move on, never forget, and always connect with our higher selves.
This is the reason why I would never want to leave my future wife to raise children on her own. It’s something that can’t be repaid with any money, words, or emotion. To any women living in this world, you work too hard to be with the wrong person. Find someone who has a goal, someone who can respect themselves, someone who is focused on their purpose in life, and the right person for you. Find a man, not a boy.

what you mom did right there is significantly important to children which my parents didn't do. I grew up with low self esteem and depression due to that because I always felt I will never be enough for them. My sister who enjoyed drawing, lost her interest (habit) of drawing because she had bad grades in school and they considered that drawing is the reason she's like that, so yeah not all parents are good, some of them even reached the maximum scale of toxicity and ruined their children life. Me and my sister (especially her) lost the ability to acknowledge the self-love and now I have to do the parents job to rebuild the whole things and ignore our parents at our best. You are so lucky.

really respect and appreciate her honesty and courage in being open about her bipolar disorder, suicidal ideation, etc. especially in cultures where mental illness is so taboo to talk about, it's really impactful when someone is willing to do that. and much love and support to her as she continues to raise her lovely daughter

The reason she wanted to kill herself was because of the abuse and being a single parent. I think the socialist idea of being a single parent is stupid and shouldn't be accepted. I think she deserved a better husband but I don't think this shouldn't been some type of social issue.
Can I just say Hiroko's an amazing interviewer - she did her best to make the interviewee felt comfortable (esp. for Ayano who's been through so much and how she's put up so much courage to do an interview with strangers) and throughout the whole interview it's like friends catching up, Hiroko's response to Ayano's overwhelming stories are genuine. She made viewers like me feel comfortable and engaging as well.

She's developed bipolar to the point of suicide!? In Japan, it seems like the stigma is intense. Shaming for being a single mother...what about the absentee father?
To be fair, they have one of the lowest single mother rate s in the world. Same with teen pregnancy. Very few societies have only negatives. That means better lives for children over all, even if the few are sacrificed. No idea if that's right or wrong, but it's how it is. The pressure on men to take responsibility and succeed is so intense that they often withdraw from Japanese society completely. So no, he's far from being spared.

@Zero Maverick Right, I agree that these actions that you describe are indicators of poor moral judgements, but these are CAUSES of divorce. Divorce in itself should be normalized and not shamed because there is a plethora of reasons behind divorce that are not necessarily rooted in malice. For example, if a couple just doesn't love each other anymore, they should be able to divorce without facing negative social pressure... EVEN if they do have a child too. Why make a child live with parents that don't love each other anymore?
Just to clarify, this means I am saying that a loss of love should not be considered a failure. Love is so complicated and different from an organization, that a loss of it could simply mean goals and perspectives have changed.

Japan simply doesnt tolerate the idea of single motherhood and absentee fathers. Both are shunned.

I’m a single father with 3 daughters and I understand how she feels. I was frustrated but looking up after my daughters made me strong and work harder. Facing just day to day basis of life.

@@ms.d5195 It's because single mothers are usually in that situation because they have been irresponsible (sexually immoral/promiscuous). Or they got pregnant in unstable relationships (out of wedlock), and naivly expected that the father would stay after the baby is born. Single fathers are respected more because that usually means that the mom is either an addict, dead, or something else incapacitating happend to the mother that made the court give father full custody over children. Rarely does the court give full custody over children to the father unless something is seriously wrong with the mother. Courts are very biased against fathers. But single mothers used to be respected too, when they were single for a good reason - e.g. got pregnant within a marriage, but had to leave the marriage due to abuse or unfaithfulness by the husband. A serious damage is being done to the child when you deprive it of a fatherless upbringing, therfore you need to consider very carefully with who and when you are getting pregnant if you want respect from others in case you end up single again.

When saw this title and person getting interviewed, she looked familiar, then I realised I follow her on instagram and then she also posted this on Instagram as well. I was stunned and baffled by her circumstances and thought "you never really know what the person in the instagrams or facebook are actually going through in life". Respect to her for her courage.

She was abused by her family, did not feel safe, or received emotional support during childhood. We always fall for pretty lies that end us up in abusive relationships because it is familiar to what we had with our parents, we repeat the cycle until we recognize the injustice happened to us and treat ourselves how our parent(s) should have treated us.
You're right. I did that same mistake. It's incredible to think how much can your own mother damage you, and it's for life.

Yesss,my own mother destroyed me too.
She reminds me a lot of my mother she had a very rough childhood and didn't get treated with nearly enough love. My mother also has BPD among other things. She was shamed for her weight and having children at such a young age. My father got her pregnant at the young age of 16 and from then on she had 3 more children. She lost all of them do to her mental illness and drug abuse. My father also beat her and gave up his rights to be with another women and he had 2 more other children. I also experienced a shitty, trauma filled (terrible if you will) childhood due to this. I forgive my mother and try to understand what she was going through and still is going through rather than being mad at her. I still resent my father for his actions. I may or may not forgive him one day.
I am so proud of this women for going against the odds and staying strong. She and her daughter deserve a happy joyful life. I truly admire her.

The young lady is well composed and is aware of her condition. It's sad to know that in Japan single mothers are looked down upon. I'm sure not all, but most are because of the culture. She's an inspiration to many who have no one to count on.

I have seen 3 or 4 diff videos this interviewer has done at diff times. And must admit how good she is at her job. The way shes able to connect with strangers, make them comfortable to express their story in a raw and honest way, and draws out interesting experiences and answers from them using good questions. It really ends up making these vids so interesting to watch.

I am also diagnosed as “bipolar”, I am also a single mother who went through similar experience as her, cheated by boyfriend during pregnancy. i like what she said in the end. We learn more about ourselves and life after what challenges we had faces. I am a happy mom just like her. Wish her all the best.

For all that she went through and is going through it warms my heart that she has great relationship with her daughter. She speaks so well about her and has really nice things to say about her. Seems to me that her daughter is all the support she needs . Even some mothers who are far from her financial and social status rarely have kind things to say about their children. I guess that’s the silver lining in this hard situation, seems like they treasure each other a lot. And that’s so sweet.Especially since she doesn’t seem to have great relationship with her own parents.

some times they are right, but often times it's used by people to excuse themselves from trying (i.e. starting a business)

idk man, I don't think it's totally her fault. A lot of times strict parents really fk their kids up mentally, when everything you do is decided by your parents, you don't grow up with confidence or self-worth, and when you are over protected, you don't have enough social experience to see the bad in people, aka you get tricked easily.
It's not always black and white guys, and if you truly love your kids, you wouldn't say that man, you would let your kids know you are there for them, does it matter that you were right if your love ones are hurting.

I'm certainly not implying that Ayano murdered anyone, but there are obviously degrees of "bad decisions," many of which are WORTHY of being scorned! Most parents are very good, a few are monsters. Most kids grow up good, but a few grow up being monsters, too. Look up the Menendez brothers, for instance. Who is to say that Ayano is NOT in the process of screwing up HER kid? We won't know until her child of five is Ayano's age, will we? Science still does not know if mental illness is inherited or learned? I'm inclined to think the former, as there are countless examples of people who went insane, following in the footsteps of a parent. Example: Marilyn Monroe's mother.
Children give many people the reason to keep going. Ive met a few single mum's like this whose only reason for living is their kids. Salute.

I had a relationship with a single mom for a while. It was hard...don't do it unless you're ready to be a dad. Sex was mind blowing though lol.

She has such a big heart and it feels like her life experience plucked the feathers from her wings that she wanted to spread when she was young. She deserves so much more love in her life, for her and her daughter. Someone who'd raise the both of them up and let them become the angels that the both of them are. Although i'd understand if she will have lost al trust in men being so deeply hurt, but I hope she will also remember that there is good out there and not all are horrible beings.
It always sucks when people can't live a normal life just because of people's prejudices or narrow mindeness

Sadly, men could cheat when you are gorgeous, amiable, lovely, etc. Cheating is just a habit. I know some women who were getting cheated, but they are far more beautiful and kind than the flings their husband took. Sometimes, I don't understand why some men or women cheated, is it because the thrill?

wow, my biggest respect for her giving the interview and being so open and honest about her problems. and my biggest respect for her making her way! manic depression is so hard, i had experienced a friend going through it and it was a hell of a time for him and his sourrounding.
for me as a european person the body language and facial expressions of them is very confusing, they talk about deeply personal and existential things and still keep giggling. i nearly had to cry two times....

I agree (about ditching the cheating hubby). However, as the old expression goes, "somewhere someone is tired of her s**t." Just because you're beautiful or handsome does not mean you are a pleasant person to live with. Many marriages go south once the beauty wears off, as it always does.

I really admire her for working hard and raising her child with so much love. She’s a great mother and I hope their little family is full of happiness and health forever.
However, the evidence is quite clear that single motherhood is not good for children. It is now become more of a lifestyle choice in the West and the results are terrible.
StimParavane My grandmother was a single mom and my mother was too. We all graduated from college, have great careers and are very happy. Maybe single parenthood has negative outcomes when said parent is just not a good parent/person, I don’t believe it has anything to do with someone not having a husband/wife to help raise their child.

I was also raised by a single mother until I was 19, but the thing is even if I'm having a pretty good life at the moment, I sometimes felt the absence of him. Like having a mentor to go through some tough times, or feeling that you weren't guided and you have to rely completely on your own.
And the outcomes of being an independant are great for sure but when you also start to be on this mood, you think that solving your problems yourself is always the right thing to do, which can be too hard to bear in some cases (in my case : dealing with a friend with suicidal tendancies and being hurt in the process).
It gives you some character for sure, but it also has its flaws.

You and your daughter are beautiful on the inside and outside. I've been a single parent for many, many years and it's a big job and the most hardest job in life you will ever have. It's even a more harder job when you don't have a positive support system and are always being put down, judged and belittled. Stay strong and I'm keeping you both in my prayers.

@John Wayne I think it's cultural difference. In my culture people think single parents are strong. Plus I think the mother is really strong because most of the time when people are abused as a kid they do the same to their kids. So people who break the cycle of abuse are strong.
@John Wayne if they want to they can just abandon their kids. But they still choose to raise their kids properly in most cases. I can't even imagine how difficult it is to raise a small child on your own. Everybody has made poor decisions in life no need to shame anyone. In abusive relationships people usually appear very nice but later they start to show their true colours. Also many a times abusers get their spouse pregnant or themself get pregnant to trap their partner in a relationship. I find single parents strong becuase raising a small kid on your own is a very difficult job.

It’s 3:30 in the morning and I’ve watched two of these Asian Boss interviews in a row. I’ve seen Asian Boss videos before but they were mainly of the male interviewers approaching randoms on the street, these interviews are SO much better and what a brilliant interview this was! She’s become such a strong lady through her hardships and sounds like she is extremely mature for her age. What she said at the end of the video is extremely touching and shows so much wisdom. I don’t know if people in Japan talk freely this way but it was great to hear her story and I hope she found it therapeutic in a way.

Her experience is very similar to mine. We’re the same age too. I cried watching this. My daughter just turned two. I went through hardships and it’s difficult. I used to want to die but having my daughter saved me.

@MrAJEO I think for me it's both. I mean I am married and I am content living with my husband, but I don't know if I could go the rest of my life with it being just me and him only. I'm not sure to what extent it would be considered "unhealthy" for me to feel like that's something that would fullfill me.
I agree having a child is a beautiful thing. I think every child should be cared for and I am very sorry for what happened to you. I think personally we shouldn't be accepting single parenthood and treat this more of a serious mental issue and help people readjust back into society. I thinking making people accept single parents and making this a socialistic Ideology. Is not helping anyone and instead I think people should try to help you and her. I think you deserved a better partner and someone who truly loves you. Not someone who cares because you are a single parent.

In the interview she said that she received brain shrinkage - which was probably the brain disorder. Many brain disorders cause mental illnesses such as bipolar and i think she meant it this way

I happened upon this video while trying to educate myself on single parenthood in Japan, what I got out of it was so much more. I live with Bipolar II/Performance Anxiety and hearing her experiences in relationships & parenthood felt like an echo of my own life. It pains me to know someone else had to go through similar struggles. Prior to this video, I have never searched on my own to see what others with this disorder have been through, because I was afraid/ashamed I may only be the only one who "let" someone take advantage of me and maybe I was the only one who threw out not the kindest of words/actions to a loved one during a manic episode. I won't go into all of the details of how I feel and what my goals/hopes are after watching this video, but I do want to say, thank you so much Ayano for telling your story. It means a lot to see how you are braving the world.

I knew this interview needed Hiroko just by reading the title. And going through the interview itself and the sensitive topics addressed there's not a better host in whole Japan for this type of work.
I am a Army Veteran and I have a friend (who was in the Army). She is an amazing woman. A single mother of two grown kids now. her mother was schizophrenic. (abandon her as a child). Had an abusive childhood. Received a TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) in the Army.
But refuses to let any of that slow her down. She is an amazing woman who is now a para-legal and working in the entertainment industry. (Mostly looking for new talent, but will be doing some movies also).
The point I am trying to make is. Keep going. Keep your head up. Never give up. She has told me and I have been around when she was considering suicide. "If you cannot live for yourself. Live for who you love".
Parents like to believe kids are kids and do not know anything. Kids know when their parents are hurting. They just do not know the words or emotions to tell or show their parents.
So please. Stay strong. For the Asian Boss crew. "Please keep up the good work"

So much respect to her an all single mothers. I was raised by my mother and my grandparents and aunts after my mom had to leave my abusive dad, my mom did and still does everything she can for my brother and I. My brother (32) me 24 my mom is my hero idk how she does it.

Well that's your opinion but I don't believe that being a single parent or not makes you a good parent.
I'm not glorifying anything dude, some parents don't have a choice sometimes and some do have a choice this woman didn't want to be with a guy who cheated on her and that's fair enough.
Not all parents have a choice and some dad's don't want to be around and leave and some mums don't want to be around a leave so what if their are studies.
