Great points. Particularly, we were surprised during our visit how reasonably priced items were in the chain stores. I guess I was expecting a big jump in prices given the remoteness. Enjoy Alaska, we can't wait to come back!

We live in Bear Valley so not technically outside the city. Roads are generally cleared pretty quick. We were "stuck" up at the house for the morning after we got like 14+ inches of wet heavy snow over night. We have a Jeep though which can get through most snow falls.

Would you consider Alaska a bike friendly state? We currently live in Florida but this is not as active state . No place to raise active children. We have Colorado and new York on our list for friendly active living. Would you recommend anchorage for too?
Anchorage has a ton of biking trails. Biking around the city can be done as well, there are some bike lanes and such but the focus is on trails in parks and such. I would suggest Eagle River for raising kids. Its a more family oriented town about 10 minutes away from Anchorage. Just be careful with the Bears!
I recently applied to a Sports Reporting position that is actually in Fairbanks, but all of this information was really nice to know in case I get the job!
Hey guys! Coming to Anchorage and wondering if it's okay to do the whale cruises in the rain? I see we have a few days of rain while we are in town and just planning our days.
Assuming its just a light rain and the water isn't to choppy the tour will likely go on. I would suggest calling your tour ahead of time and packing a rain coat along with some warmer clothing. We went on a tour in July and even on a nicer day it was very cold by the glaciers. Hope this helps!
Planning our move to Anchorage, thank you for your post. Question: how is internet in Bear Valley and who maintains the roads (I hope that isn’t a sore spot in asking but I wasn’t sure how to find out any other way.)
No problem I hope it helped! The internet isn't great, its usable and can still stream pretty much anything but very expensive and much slower compared to the lower 48. The roads in Bear Valley specifically are maintained fairly well through contractors. So far this year our road that is plowed by a contractor has been much clearer much sooner then the city roads leading out to Bear Valley. Let me know if you have any other questions!
@@jordanandsoph thank you and very good to know. I have done as much research as I can and I think that because we love winter and love snow, I hope that it will go a long way in making it a wonderful home for our family. Which health stores are there/ such as Whole Foods or Earth Fare? Also are there Marshalls/ TJ Max or similar? How about the quality of fresh organic food and bread ? thanks so much!
There is a health foods store called natural pantry which is very similar to a whole food or trader joes. There is not a Marhsall or TJ Max but there is a Nordstrom Rack. Fred Meyers (the local grocery store) also has a decent selection of organic/healthier food options. Hope this helps.
Sophia Michelle Speaking of internet, is it solid bandwidth? Stream Netflix without difficulty? If you needed to telecommute to work, would rural Alaska internet cut it?

A lot of other states are full of ugly, selfish people and while yes there are those everywhere including alaska i feel like there are less of those kinds of people in alaska.
I’m quite disappointed because I really want to move from Illinois to Alaska and become a conservation officer, but I currently have no money and no partner, and life goes by so fast. I feel like I’m just stuck here in Illinois, and I’ll never get my dream job.

There is a definite bump in pay here compared to other places to make up for some of the cost of living differences. There is also the annual payment from the state for living here which helps as well.

How come you guys never talk about how much Alaska pays people to live there?? Is that something you guys are trying to hide or is it illegal to talk about?? Better yet, I heard that it is night time for several months straight, is that true?? I also heard that it is sunlight for 3 months or something like that, is that true?? These are the things I need to know about before I go
Hello, these are great questions that we should probably have covered. It is true, you do get paid anywhere between $1,000 and $2,500 to live here. However, you have to live here for a full calendar year before you get it. Also this is all tied to oil taxes and lately Alaska has been hurting. Their is speculation this will eventually end at the current rate. Another point is that there is currently no state income tax, another thing that may be changing do to decreased oil production/price. Parts of Alaska are always dark in the winter. Here in Anchorage I would say the least amount of light was around 9:30 to 4PM so still over 5 hours of "sunlight". It is worthy of noting the sun never gets high in the sky and always sits pretty low in the horizon. Let us know if you have any other questions.
@@jordanandsoph Thanks so much for the info. I want to go to the part that is dark the most. I'm trying to get away from sunlight as much as possible. I don't like the daylight nor sunlight for the matter so I'm all for 5 or 6 months of darkness
As someone who was born and raised here in Alaska, I'll say that villages do get hit with snow quite hard and will get freezing cold. Anchorage, on the other hand, is the states biggest city and no it's NOT true that the state stays in darkness but during the winter, daylight is very short and during summer daylight is very long
I want to move from. Scotland to alaska! I want maybe a farm or just living as a hunter/Fisher. But I don't know how to do ANY of that as I live in a small town ;-; I also have no money as I'm a highschooler, is it a bad idea xD
No best to go with about £12000 though kid. Plus you would have to be accepted by the immigration department. So you'd need a good education and job experience 🙂.

Things new comers do not know. 1. There is only about 3 days food supply any where in Alaska at any time. 2. look all around & count the number of things that is not shipped in to Alaska. There is 99.999 % of everything is shipped in to Alaska. But that is not all. 3. Alaska has the largest Mosquitos population in the all the lower 49 states together. Never leave town with out "Bug Dope". They can plug the air intake on a Cat D8 & kill the engine, by choking of the air intake filter. Most people that live in Alaska have not a clue about where they are living. 4. I would say less than 30% of the population know this info. 5. Because of the pandemic the only way to go & come to Alaska is by fly in or out or by Ship in or out. 6. the ships are booked up every summer by the end of January. Good luck till next year.
Anchorage doesn't get too cold. Rarely gets below 0 degrees Fahrenheit and is often in the 20's through winter (late October to early November). Fairbanks on the other hand is extremely cold. It isn't uncommon to reach -40.
I moved to Eagle River just north of Anchorage from Florida last year in August, 2020. A flight back home for me about 12 hours or longer, although I haven't taken that trip yet. Winter did seem to last a long time although it was my real first winter so I enjoyed it. Winter here is more beautiful than summer IMO. Me and my kids also miss Chick-fil-A so much! I disagree about one thing: there is no Dunkin Donuts in Anchorage. If you saw one, PLEASE tell me where it is!!

Question: Are there any unique winter stores?
I would love to take the photography class with my kids. We love to learn and live local as much as possible. We love to visit local organic farms from private to public venues. Any advice on living near Anchorage is greatly appreciated as we are learning the area.
@@wretchedfamily there are not really a unique winter stores, but I would be happy to help! I'm a realtor here in Anchorage. Send me a message on Instagram @sophmichelle__ and I can set up a time to chat :)
I'm moving to Wasilla in 30 days, bought my first house ever.
Thats Awesome! I have sold many houses out in Wasilla. Its a great place!
@@jordanandsoph lo que dices....I'm coming from Texas! I'm super excited! I hate the hot weather here in tejas! jaja. Estoy muy contento! I'm basically very happy to be an Alaskan finally! The one state I've always wanted to be in and now I will be! Can't wait to try the Cod & Salmon fresh from the bay! rather than frozen in Texas lol
How much does a house(or cottage) like this run for in Anchorage?
Sophia Michelle Speaking of internet, is it solid bandwidth? Stream Netflix without difficulty? If you needed to telecommute to work, would rural Alaska internet cut it?
Man I wanna move to Fairbanks so bad but Anchorage sounds so amazing too 🤔
Most of Alaska is very beautiful!
Sophia Michelle can’t argue against that, it’s gorgeous!! Everything I see makes me fall in love with it over and over again. Can’t wait to move in!
I'M FROM TEXAS I LOVE ALASKA RIGHT NOW I'M CONSIDERING MOVING TO FAIRBANKS ALASKA I HAVEN'T MADE MY MIND UP YET👍
@@sebonsheffield5934 do it! It will be such an experience of a lifetime. There is a culture of community and family there that just can't be found in most other places. I moved from alaska to texas 2 years ago and now plan to move back next year with my husband who was born and raised in alaska. A lot of other states are full of ugly, selfish people and while yes there are those everywhere including alaska i feel like there are less of those kinds of people in alaska.
Where did you move from. What do you do that allows you to move to there. We’re from Oregon
We moved from Minnesota. We moved pre-covid. I know there are a lot of restrictions not going through Canada if you plan on driving here.
I’m quite disappointed because I really want to move from Illinois to Alaska and become a conservation officer, but I currently have no money and no partner, and life goes by so fast. I feel like I’m just stuck here in Illinois, and I’ll never get my dream job.
Haha remote in anchroage! We are from talkeetna ak, we make our monthly trip to anchroage for all our remote stuff!
Yea Anchorage isn't that much different than many other mid-sized cities from the lower 48.
How much are you paying monthly. My husband and I are moving to Anchorage in march/April and it's hard to find beautiful cottages like yours!
We are extremely lucky with what we have and what we pay. Feel free to reach out to me if you have more questions about moving here. You can find my instagram as a pinned comment or on our homepage and direct message me!
how is the employment there compared to the cost of living?
There is a definite bump in pay here compared to other places to make up for some of the cost of living differences. There is also the annual payment from the state for living here which helps as well.
Y’all missed the earthquake lol,,,,, there’s a crispy crepe on Mouldoon and Debarr but no Dunkin’ Donuts lol,,,, please be careful when you go outside , you could possibly walk into a moose , brown bear, honey badger, lynx and wolves. I would highly recommend a shotgun. Bird shot then slugs x4. There’s a reason why it’s called Bear valley. Not tryin to scare you. Enjoyed your video good luck and be safe. Oh luv the cottage. Perfect 👌🏽
Yes we just missed the big earthquake! Haha yes after we made this we saw several of these comments which made me realize that I had visited Krispy and not Dunkin. Thanks!
what kind of work do you two do?
I am a real estate agent and my husband is an auditor.
@@jordanandsoph Cool, Thanks
coffee sounds great!
did you guys transfer jobs or found jobs before or once you moved
We found jobs before we moved here. We knew we wanted to move here and just started searching until we both found something.
Sophia Michelle what do you guys do for work? I’d need an accounting job
@@jayhawks-jh6dp I am a real estate agent and my husband is an auditor for a CPA firm. They hire pretty frequently up here for CPA's, granted that was before COVID.
Sophia Michelle I’m actually getting my real estate license too lol. Is he a CPA or just have an accounting degree? Just out of curiosity
@@jayhawks-jh6dp Oh nice! As of now he just has an accounting degree. He did pass all the CPA tests and is just waiting for enough experience to actually get licensed.
How is your home Internet service? Reliable? Fast?
Surprisingly we have very few issues with it. We stream quite a bit and it generally handles it well. Way more expensive then the lower 48 though.
The best part of living in Anchorage is that it is only a 1/2 hour drive from Alaska ;) /MatSu Borough resident
Yes Kris, that is so true! That is why we moved to Bear Valley :)
@@jordanandsoph Re: Long periods of daylight during summer... Ans: Blackout curtains or sleep masks! If you don't mind a little drive, 3 Bears Alaska is a great shopping experience. They have some Kirkland Signature (Costco) products without the parking hassle of the Dimond or DeBarr Costco stores.
I just got engaged in Alaska my Fiancé is from Alaska and we both like in California currently and we plan on moving up there in a year or so?
Its a great place to live! We love it so much more then when we made this video. I am a realtor so let me know if you want any help!
@@jordanandsoph awe thank you so much and yeah it’s a very pretty place
Nice video!
Thanks!
Steam Dot Coffee
BB's Coffee Shop
Fire Island Bakery
I hope you get to pack in as many adventures as you can in the summer. They are short in Alaska
We packed in as much as we could but they went way to fast!
Did you all rent or did you purchase your home ?
We are renting!
"There is still taco bell up here lol," I want to move there but the cold is what I am not used too.
But at least there is a Taco Bell!
Anchorage, on the other hand, is the states biggest city and no it's NOT true that the state stays in darkness but during the winter, daylight is very short and during summer daylight is very long
Liked and Subscribed. How's it been going??
I want to move from. Scotland to alaska! I want maybe a farm or just living as a hunter/Fisher. But I don't know how to do ANY of that as I live in a small town ;-; I also have no money as I'm a highschooler, is it a bad idea xD
No best to go with about £12000 though kid. Plus you would have to be accepted by the immigration department. So you'd need a good education and job experience 🙂.
I want to move, but the cost of living, mainly groceries, scares me!
Groceries weren't terrible. Restaurants we definitely have noticed an increase!
where are u guys from?
We are from Southwest Minnesota.
Hello I have just found your channel and you are both ADORABLE!! My partner and I are currently in Louisville KY and we want to move to anchorage Alaska with our kitty. And my question for the both of is what do you do for a living if you don’t mind me asking. I am currently working towards becoming a mortician in Kentucky and my partner is a package handler worker at UPS. I would work on getting my embalmer and funeral director license from Kentucky switched for Alaska somehow lol and he would work for UPS in anchorage. I would like to know what you both do for work to be able to afford this place because it looks like our DREAM HOME!!! I hope you all are well and staying safe! Thank you for any help you can give us for affording moving and driving to Anchorage Alaska just like you both did it looked like a stunning drive! Can’t wait to do it ourselves in a year or two :)
Thank you so much! I am a realtor (so when you do move here let me know!) and my husband is an auditor at a CPA firm. We got really luck with this place as it is just a rental and about 20 minutes away from downtown anchorage. So we gave up some convenience for the views.
Sophia Michelle Thats awesome I will of course let you know!! :) and is it easy to find rentals like the one you all are in because it’s like our dream home we have always wanted to feel “off the grid” and to have a beautiful cabin but with all the amenities with it like the beautiful one you all rent now :) thanks for replying to me stay safe and please upload more videos xoxo
good one sophia ❤️
Thanks!
Great Tips!
is it cold
Anchorage doesn't get too cold. Rarely gets below 0 degrees Fahrenheit and is often in the 20's through winter (late October to early November). Fairbanks on the other hand is extremely cold. It isn't uncommon to reach -40.
I love coffee shops
SAME!
Is there a good jobs there
Yes there are pretty good jobs here. Corona has kinda shaken things up but starting to settle down again.
I want to move to Alaska
You should! We have loved it here. Personally I would suggest moving in summer but we did it in late fall and still loved it.
Very pretty!
Thank you! 😊
Beautiful
Thank you!
Nice video.
Thanks!
Welcome to Anchorage. Did you buy your guns yet? LOL
haha we have not yet! We do want/need to though!
Go to Gunrunners and ask for Troy but dont piss him off! 😤 or Cabelas to buy your firearm. Dont go to Grannys! Ahole people there! 🤬😤
I feel like I know you from somewhere.
Funny, your name does seem familiar.
Cute!
Thanks!
Out of all the places in the world I will never move to Alaska.
It definitely is a unique place!
Haha yes, after we made this I realized I had actually been going to Krispy Kreme, not Dunkin. Sorry to get your hopes up!
@@jordanandsoph aww shucks. Well that's okay. When I go back to Florida to visit I will be sure to fill up on Chick-fil-A and Dunkin Donuts - 'DD' as it was affectionately known to me and my colleagues.
It's very expensive to live in Alaska!
That is true, not as bad as we thought it would be though, or at least not in Anchorage.
Great vids ! I moved to the Canadian Arctic this year and vlog you should check my channel out , subscribed !
Thanks for the sub!
Have u guys ever been to a bikini babes coffee shop ?🧐😌 lol tht was one of the first coffee sheds” i tried here in anchorage n was like 😳😳😳 lmao
Funny story, Jordan went to Fairbanks for work, accidentally went to one with his coworkers, then had to walk into the clients office with the very unique pink cups. 😅😂 ultimate cringe.
LOVE ALASKA VERY BEAUTIFUL 👍PLACE
It is so beautiful! We love living here.
Pushed every volume to full blast 100% and am still having a hard time hearing you. Speak up please!
Thanks for the heads ups.
No Chick-Fil-A? I'm sold. Be there in a month.
You live in Los Anchorage? Lame city 😒
