No state tax, no building codes, no property tax, no HOA! That’s a few reasons I picked where I am. Of course no building codes is how my cabin ended up needing a bunch of work! And yeah, I carry because of animals mostly too. No state lets you live more free than Alaska. Love Ron’s channel! I found him because he comments your videos! I would never live in California (sorry Ron)and glad I left Colorado which is trying to become California 2.0! LIVE FREE!!😉
No property tax, one not has to buy a plot of land there? Just building in the middle of nowhere? It can be very dangerous to be completely alone i think. Greetings
Hey friend! We just retired from the military too! Just a few days ago. Thanks so much for your service! 🇺🇸 Just bought our off grid cabin in Alaska! Totally resonate with EVERYthing you said. Let freedom ring!🤍
Had to put a coat on just to watch this video. Brrrr... You folks are living the freedom dream no doubt. That is pretty cool they pay you to live there. Bear meat is mighty tasty!! Just say'n.. Thanks for the info on why you live there. Just to cold for me buddy. I will check out Ron's channel. Looking forward to seeing the new boat!! Stay safe my friends.
Hey CB hope you both are doing good. I filmed the boat yesterday. I spent almost 4 hours checking out the boat and asking questions or pointing out issues or concerns. I honestly hope I got enough video of the boat😂 We shall see. If everything goes right I should pick it up on the 24th. I can’t wait.
We love Idaho, but after a family vacation to the Kenai Peninsula we want to move to Alaska! The beauty, the wildness and the people were just awesome! Someday! Live Free!
Hey guys, I haven’t commented for a long time. The last time I did, I was living in Mt Tamborine Australia, I’m now fully off grid in a place called Monduran Australia. 40 acres of my idea of paradise, thank you both for sharing your journey. Cheers from Australia, stay safe, Mick.
i must say Alaska is a great state and it is a wonderland to live in. My uncle has been there for over 40 yrs and loves it. Thanks for sharing and please have a wonderful week ahead. i will see you on the next video
Just found your video because of your chicken coop build. I found your videos to be very informative and love listening to them. By the way, thank you for your service. I wish I lived in a state that had all the perks Alaska does. I do believe in living free. Thanks again.
Much as I love Utah I can't wait to move back to Alaska full time. Worked four summer tour seasons up there in college over 10 years ago and always said I feel like I left a piece of myself there. The beauty, wildness, personal freedom and responsibility, no income tax, no codes or permits, outdoor recreation, are some of the many reasons I love Alaska. An extended family member may be inheriting an old cabin on the Kenai Peninsula and they've offered to let me live there for free for a few years in exchange for renovating it. That will be my foothold into living up there full time forever I hope.
Hello. Sounds to me like this is the perfect state, and i live in new zealand , and know what it`s like to have government try and take away what we value and our freedoms.
If I was younger, Alaska would be great. We're both retired military and we retired to Texas. No state income tax, and where we are everyone carries, fresh fruit and vegetables year around in our area, seldom get below 40 degrees and good neighbors.
Also live in Texas. Love some of the more rural areas. Just need to be careful around the larger cities. Crime is rampant in some of them. Hubby & I are getting ready to retire. Gonna move to the country and enjoy some peace n quiet. If our health & hubby liked cold better, Alaska would be on the radar. Lol Live free! Appreciate the updates. So excited to see the boat!🎉
So excited for the new boat! Good for you! Freedom is so often overlooked by those who just "settle" for their current situation and states law. It's those who seek out the lifestyle and governing that suited their beliefs that I admire. Great chat B! #keepitburning
Alaska is beautiful!! I do envy you. I live in Minnesota and I enjoy the 4 seasons. We just got over a very cold snap. Now 20's this week. Stay warm, stay safe and have a great week!!!!
Brian, Thank you for your service. We are living free, because of servicemen like you. I love your videos, the hawks flying by, the passing of the whales. Diana's garden and her chickens. Please, continue videoing as long as you possibly can, I just love your channel.
Grew up in Idaho. Agree the mindset of Freedom is solid there. Alaska is next level. Utah where I'm at when not in AK is decent as well. Only looking at an entire State is tricky as cities in most states turn the wrong way. Boise. Salt Lake. They are the wrong path. Rural is the key!!
Thanks Brian I enjoyed it and as I may have told you previously Alaska is the only state that I would have immigrated to, but being old and ill that time frame has come and gone now. My second choices were the Yukon Territory or northern British Columbia, but don't get me wrong I still love Northern Ontario as it's my birthplace and my residence too...See You and Diana next week, stay safe and enjoy your Alaska Dream!
I’m so happy I found your channel cause you’re so honest and teaching so much that I need to know financially/guns/rules and laws of Alaska. Etc…thanks 🙏🇨🇦

Good morning Brian. Yes Alaska is beautiful. You are so lucky to be there. Enjoy❤️. What can I say about Massachusetts. We live on the shore and it is beautiful but we are dealing with tourist year round now. Big changes but I’m too old to move now and that’s ok I got you and others to show me what it is like in other places. We can’t do anything ( maybe breath) without a permit and the costs are horrible. Thank you so much for sharing. Take care and enjoy your life✌️🇺🇸
Wow you are right that Fairbanks is so different from the area you live. I was stationed at Eielson AFB, Alaska in the early 80s. The winters there are damn harsh and long to put it mildly. I am a very outdoorsy person that was born and raised in Montana. However, I did not enjoy my time at Eielson AFB. It was mainly because I was a 20 year old single Airman living in the barracks. Being single my tour at Eielson AFB was 1 1/2 years long. I arrived at Eielson AFB in October if you count the 18 months I was there you will realize that I spent 2 winters and 1 summer there. It took a lot of the fun away from it. That fact that I was stationed more than 30 miles south of Fairbanks and there were very few young ladies made it much harder for a young Airman. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to enjoy a lot of Alaska the way that others do. Even if I did go hunting, salmon and halibut fishing I wouldn't have been able to store the meat. I did do some catch and release fly fishing for grayling during the one summer I was there. Oh, the one thing I almost forgot is the skeeters. It was almost impossible to go outside during the summer months unless you had skeeter dope on. I have never seen a place with so many of them, and they are very large.
Brian I see why you and Diane love it there. What a beautiful property you have and have developed. Thanks for sharing your reasoning about living life there. Hard work but like you said freedom, not constant government regulating your every move! Looking forward to seeing your new mode of transportation. Best wishes, Deb
I didn’t know you wanted penny by penny..😂 Great video. I love the climate here but you guys have absolutely beautiful place. Can’t wait to see more scenery from the new boat. Thanks Brian..👊 You guys have a wonderful week..!!
Your growing season is insane. I say weigh the pros and cons and see which state is best for you. Thanks for the video Ron. I have never track my spending to the extent that you have. This video will definitely help others when thinking about making the off grid plunge.
Difference between your pipeline and the Keystone pipeline is the oil in Alaska is U.S. Oil....The oil for the keystone pipeline is Canadian oil destined for the open market...Only ones that will make money off of that is big business refineries where the Canadian oil is going to to be refined...Love Idaho...After my parents divorced my dad moved there so have been there quite a few times...Very pretty state....Sure would like to see Alaska someday...Stay safe, be well...
Sadly, we have city sales tax in Sitka (5% off-season, 6% during terrorist season), PSG has city sales tax, and I know KTN does, too (borough + city = 6.5%). We bought our big boat through BayCo in KTN, and at the time of our purchase, their sales tax applied to everyone equally, regardless of where you live, and it was capped at $65. Now, they're required to charge you sales tax for large purchases based on the sales tax of where you reside, which means our Lund that we just purchased from them cost us 11X more in sales tax than our North River. Seems like they get you coming or going, but I'd rather the tax dollars stay local. The other great thing about living in AK is that you can, if you put enough effort into it, live a subsistence lifestyle and spend little on meat or veg. 😊 We're excited for you guys and your new boat--let the fun, and an all new level of anxiety, begin!
Well it’s not just Juneau that has taxes. I’m glad we can all suffer together 😂 I agree you can definitely be very self sufficient here. I’d say more so here than in the interior.
Awesome that you live in Alaska after the wife followed you around. I live in Okinawa for the same reason. My Okinawan wife gave up a high paying job to marry a Lance Corporal (E3) and put up with all the USMC stuff, including tours in Iraq. I call this her Payback Tour. We are about to build a house here and will stay for life. Good on ya and thank you for all the great videos!
It sure does seem like someone is always trying to take our freedom away. I never had the guts to be in the military but I sure am thankful and appreciate those who have and still are fighting for our freedom. Thank you for your service. 🇺🇲
MatSu Valley has a sales tax and so does Palmer and Wasilla. But I would trade it for anyplace. Well maybe the Kenai Peninsula where we have our cabin.
Those two pups love playing together. Skipper has turned into a scavenger. He’s always bringing body parts back home. Yesterday I seen something in his mouth and it was a spine of something. 😂
south dakota...cc is just a thing here too(2nd amend)... no state tax ... good gov and alot of personal freedom.... but where you live... sounds great too
Personal freedom... you got that right. Living in Washington now. The water is getting a bit on the warm side for this frog. Looking real hard at Idaho or Southern Alaska.
I hear what you’re saying. Life without freedom is not a life, but one’s personal freedom cannot trump or impede on the rights of others. I reside in northern Canada, a very similar environment as yours except, I don’t have the limitation of living on an island. I wouldn’t want to have to leave here. Americans are a proud people, so proud that hey are extremely biased about their country. That’s fine. Pride can be blinding. What is important is that you are happy and comfortable with who and where you are. I enjoy checking out your channel once in awhile. Man this global warming is literally changing our lifestyle. More reason to honker down. Enjoy!
That’s a very libertarian thing to say. There’s nothing wrong with being proud of where you come from. If I was Canadian I’d proudly fly the maple leaf 🇨🇦
I live in Petersburg, we have sales tax and property tax here, we don't live in area 1 of the borough so we can do and build what we want. It is also a island, love my Alaska, stay free and strapped.
I live in Texas but Alaska is the most beautiful place I have been to. Have gone 7 times and hoping to go more. Most of my trips have been to the inside passage. I understand how you decide to live near Juneau. What a beautiful place.
We love your channel and we hope you don't get political. We live in northern Michigan and we probably get more snow than you. Mostly lake effect. Thanks for sharing.
It’s funny, you mention New Hampshire, I live in New Hampshire, and I absolutely love the four seasons and the fall foliage. However, you cannot do anything in this state without drawing a permit, and everything in the state is astronomically expensive and you cannot afford to buy property. I’m looking to buy a house now and I can’t even find a double wide on more than an acre of land for under $350,000.
Hello Brian! I love your videos and it's a dream how you live, I would like that too, unfortunately it will remain a dream! I wish you a great and long life on the island! Alaska is just a beautiful part of the world, I love it. Greetings Tom from Austria!
This is amazing you talked about what you did. I am from Ohio back in August I drove up from Denver with 2 friends for salmon festival. It was a dream of mine to visit the state and after the time I spent up there I want to come back hopefully forever. Trying to find property and a job now. #2AShallNotBeInfringed
Mother Nature is acting strange this winter for sure! We've had a pretty mild winter so far here in Copper River Valley. Congrats on the boat. Live Free!
Just started watching your videos brother, spent 15 years in SE falling timber all over from Ketchikan to to Icy Bay sure miss AK what part are you living in SE somewhere by Juneau, I’m retired now living in Yaak Mt. God bless and be safe , Henry n Susan
What are you going to do in 10 to 20 years...? Going to be hard to keep up when you get older...I live in WV, we can carry without permits and it's a beautiful state, and it'll be a little easier to live here when I retire and get old...luv what you're doing, keep the videos comin.
Alaska is beautiful, and yes, a hard living like ya'll do, but in the end I see the deep appreciation ya'll have for your life there. And Florida is way to expensive and complicated for me to live here anymore either, look for a new neighbor...lol Love ya'll ❤️
Love watching the dogs run wild in the snow. Alaska is just somewhere a good sidearm is pretty much a requirement unless you're never getting off the asfault in Anchorage. Even then, the moose are like stray cats here and I have my 10mm even when I take the dog out because you never know when you walk out the door and a moose is right there. Usually they don't pay you any mind but there is always that chance you step out on a big bull or a cow with a calf and things can get "wild" real fast. If I was healthier and was able to live out like you guys, i'd do that in a heart beat.
As magical as all that snow looks I am sure it isn't that easy to live in let alone when it thaws, still looks beautiful though. Glad you bought a decent chair ;) Great job you guys see you soon
So I'd been researching a place which fulfilled some of my ideas for personal freedom. I live In Texas, while you'd think it was a free state, there's some things I don't like. We have annoying sales taxes and you can't buy full cannabis products. While there is a lot of freedom with personal armaments, it's kind of not the whole package when it comes to other things. It's really crowded and people like to impose their beliefs on you, both left and right. But like the vibe I get from Alaska is folks kinda mind their own business. Yall seem friendly, but not in the fake southern way (sorry if that rubs other folks from around here the wrong way.) I'm not a living off the grid kind of fella but I appreciate that in a place in Alaska, someone could do so if they chose to. It's just, pardon the pun, a more chill place from what I've seen and watched other youtubers post. Keep up the good work my man.
You know I’d have to agree with you. Growing up in Oklahoma tattoos were illegal until the 2000s. I think everyone has a right to their own beliefs but that shouldn’t be imposed on others.
You guts be careful out there. I just herd a guy had broken his back and died just climbing in and out of his boat . he slipped on his ladder at the back end of his boat buy the motor. Fell backwards yep I know just crazy Broke his back and died. So just be careful out there.
I think the point Dave was trying to make with his video is that if you see someone living "off grid" in a mansion with no responsibilities, no outside work, there's something fishy about that. Off grid living is difficult and takes a lot of doing. There are a lot of youtubers (not Alaskans) that have a fake "off grid" experience. Which is a problem for a lot of ppl that want to go off grid but have no idea what it really takes.
I'm glad to hear the boat is coming soon. The only thing that I have that you don't is property tax and my tax for this you was 80 dollars. I live in N.E. Texas in the country. I do carry a gun and we have both types of Constitutional and permit. That's so you can cross into another state with your gun. But you have the Best scenery around you it's Beautiful up there.
Ive got a 2.3 acre property in Nikiski Alaska, on the Kenai peninsula that im thinking of selling. Im getting some years on me and I am looking to move south.
@@AnAlaskaHomestead it really is a beautiful area. I've spent a lot of time in your area in the past. Southeast is my favorite part of Alaska but the family wanted to be on the road system.
Unfortunately I think people misunderstood what Dave was saying about Off Grid. His point is some people think it's an easy life ( by watching scripted TV shows and yes some UA-camrs as well) and I'll buy this and that etc and go into debt if that's the case stay where you are. Off grid living is not easy life it's hard work and the point is to be free & debt free. I think I asked you before, is your boat a distance from where you live because it's easier to launch, more sheltered and less currents/ debris? Hi to Dianna and the pups. Blessings to you and your families. 😊🇺🇲.
Hi Patricia. Yeah I get what he’s saying but there’s always going to be class brackets. If you don’t have much money going off grid isn’t going to change that😂 Yes we keep the boat over there because it’s more protected. It’s about 1/2 a mile away from the cabin.
I wish Congress would pass the national reciprocity law for all the states. I live in OH but cannot take my firearm through PA or NJ because they don't recognize OH.

Anchorage has sales tax on "tourist" items like hotels, vehicle rentals, etc. The MatSu has a sales up to a certain amount. Live Free!
Good to know. The sales tax on my boat was $15.00
Brian I see why you and Diane love it there. What a beautiful property you have and have developed. Thanks for sharing your reasoning about living life there. Hard work but like you said freedom, not constant government regulating your every move! Looking forward to seeing your new mode of transportation. Best wishes, Deb
Thanks for watching Deb
I didn’t know you wanted penny by penny..😂
Great video.
Man I hope you make it up here one day.
FREEDOM!!!
Awesome.
FREEDOM!! Sounds like Red Dawn.. 😆 ❤ Good movie..
Fantastic Video!
It looks like the dogs love all the snow !! Have a great week !!
Those two pups love playing together. Skipper has turned into a scavenger. He’s always bringing body parts back home. Yesterday I seen something in his mouth and it was a spine of something. 😂
@@AnAlaskaHomestead LOL, fun times for you getting it from him i bet.
@@maryalice8507 😂yes
well said... thanks..
Thanks for watching!
Beautiful. You are so blessed.
We sure think so.
south dakota...cc is just a thing here too(2nd amend)... no state tax ... good gov and alot of personal freedom.... but where you live... sounds great too
Hi Deb, SD is a great place.
Y’all are making me itch to get out to Alaska
New sub here on taxes nice.
I'm from Southwestern PA lots of taxes here not bad living here I like it thanks for the video my friend.
Awesome. Thanks for stopping by👍
Man seeing that wind mill, I seen you & Noah Brown putting it up on tv, I told my wife I watch him on U tube. Lol
Ha that’s true. Thanks for watching.
Great videos as always! ☆☆☆☆☆
Thank you! Cheers!
I love where I’m from and that’s Maine I live in Mississippi retired Navy SeaBee
Awesome. Loved seeing the SeaBees around. They can build an entire camp in a week. I’ve slept in many SEA & SWA Huts.
Personal freedom... you got that right. Living in Washington now. The water is getting a bit on the warm side for this frog. Looking real hard at Idaho or Southern Alaska.
I don’t blame you.
Thanks for the comment Julie. I’ll make it over to Petersburg one of these days.
I live in Texas but Alaska is the most beautiful place I have been to. Have gone 7 times and hoping to go more. Most of my trips have been to the inside passage. I understand how you decide to live near Juneau. What a beautiful place.
Inside passage is a special place.
We love your channel and we hope you don't get political. We live in northern Michigan and we probably get more snow than you. Mostly lake effect. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome.
Life as it should be!
Hello Brian! I love your videos and it's a dream how you live, I would like that too, unfortunately it will remain a dream! I wish you a great and long life on the island! Alaska is just a beautiful part of the world, I love it. Greetings Tom from Austria!
Thank you Tom. Good to hear from you.
Great video
This is amazing you talked about what you did. I am from Ohio back in August I drove up from Denver with 2 friends for salmon festival. It was a dream of mine to visit the state and after the time I spent up there I want to come back hopefully forever. Trying to find property and a job now. #2AShallNotBeInfringed
That’s awesome. 🤞 good luck
@An Alaska Homestead I made friends with people in the Homer area and trying to get jobs up there once it's starts to unfreeze up there
Mother Nature is acting strange this winter for sure! We've had a pretty mild winter so far here in Copper River Valley. Congrats on the boat. Live Free!
It is acting strange this year.
Soldotna and Kenai charge sales tax inside their city limits. Also, that PFD check was the largest ever. It's usually not nearly that much.
It was definitely a good year for the PFD.
I LOVE ALASKA!
You do love Alaska
Me too🥰
Just started watching your videos brother, spent 15 years in SE falling timber all over from Ketchikan to to Icy Bay sure miss AK what part are you living in SE somewhere by Juneau, I’m retired now living in Yaak Mt. God bless and be safe , Henry n Susan
That’s awesome. I’m glad I can bring back some memories for you. Yes we live near Juneau. We don’t share the name of the island publicly.
Lucky man it’s my dream great video
What's important to me is personal freedom and access to true wilderness. 👍🇨🇦😎🌲❄
You got that right.
What are you going to do in 10 to 20 years...? Going to be hard to keep up when you get older...I live in WV, we can carry without permits and it's a beautiful state, and it'll be a little easier to live here when I retire and get old...luv what you're doing, keep the videos comin.
Maybe in 20 years or so we will buy an RV and visit all of American’s state parks. Who knows. 👍
Alaska is beautiful, and yes, a hard living like ya'll do, but in the end I see the deep appreciation ya'll have for your life there. And Florida is way to expensive and complicated for me to live here anymore either, look for a new neighbor...lol Love ya'll ❤️
Ha I’ll keep an eye out for you.
Yeah those moose don’t play around.
As magical as all that snow looks I am sure it isn't that easy to live in let alone when it thaws, still looks beautiful though. Glad you bought a decent chair ;) Great job you guys see you soon
The snow, mud, snow, mud does get tiring at times.
@@AnAlaskaHomestead I can imagine Brian, but it will soon be summer and Dianna can get growing again.
Good evening here from Romania I greet you with respect Marius 🇹🇩🖐️
Thank you Marius
Bună dimineața 🕳️🖐️
Enjoyed your video
Glad you enjoyed it
You guts be careful out there. I just herd a guy had broken his back and died just climbing in and out of his boat . he slipped on his ladder at the back end of his boat buy the motor. Fell backwards yep I know just crazy Broke his back and died. So just be careful out there.
That’s true, death is around every corner but that’s regardless of where you live.
What gets me is channels that film an off grid life for a day and then go back to their house in the city.
Wasilla and a few around here do have tax.
I'm glad to hear the
boat is coming soon.
The only thing that I
have that you don't is
property tax and my
tax for this you was 80
dollars. I live in N.E.
Texas in the country.
I do carry a gun and
we have both types of
Constitutional and
permit. That's so you
can cross into another
state with your gun.
But you have the Best
scenery around you it's
Beautiful up there.
Texas is definitely high on the best states list.
Ive got a 2.3 acre property in Nikiski Alaska, on the Kenai peninsula that im thinking of selling. Im getting some years on me and I am looking to move south.
We looked up in that area and found a nice cabin on a lake but my wife really wanted to be close to her parents.
@@AnAlaskaHomestead it really is a beautiful area. I've spent a lot of time in your area in the past. Southeast is my favorite part of Alaska but the family wanted to be on the road system.
well said, cheers from da ROCK.
Yes🤙
If you don’t have much money going off grid isn’t going to change that😂
Yes we keep the boat over there because it’s more protected. It’s about 1/2 a mile away from the cabin.
Interesting man, it's got to be so different living out there
We enjoy it.
I wish Congress would pass the national reciprocity law for all the states. I live in OH but cannot take my firearm through PA or NJ because they don't recognize OH.
I wish they wood too.
