I’m so exhausted listening to this 101 days under taking. Then I realized as a vegetable farmer my season is longer then 101 days, and I think the same thoughts, “ Omg, I have to get up tomorrow and do it again. My (fill in body part) is aching and there are so many tasks unfinished.” I have had so many Day 80 where the hail storm came through or the pest of the year has ruined something major, and I just don’t think I can show up again at Saturday market with a game face. I certainly would not have the guts though to turn a camera on my face and admit that I am about to break, to me sharing the struggle publicly is the hard part. That seems to take more guts they the physical aspect.

I saw James Interview with Tom Bilyeu in early 2019 and was at 4 K running for around 3 times a months. I doubled that right after the interview and then did run more. I settled to whenever I would go running to do a Half Marathon and since Ma 2019 to today I have done 200 Half Marathons usually at night on my own in around 2 hours just because of that one interview I saw about the 50 50 50. And I am a creative that doesn't really value sports. The running became my super power for my own happiness and inner wealth. I am one of those stories he may need hear about, but that feels a lot of gratitude for what he did.

I wrestled from 4 years old.
For a very long time all I knew was training for it and traveling for it.
I remember leaving the mindset that I would take the hard path every time.
I didn’t know what would happen to me, felt like a free fall and a loss of control and a mistake.
But what you really need is to earn your right each day to say that you can still manage mental-toughness-wise to choose the path that compliments your priorities the most.
Don’t struggle to struggle unless your current battle in life is developing that understanding (what am I capable of? What can’t I do?)
If you need other things and you want a network of competing / cross-parasitizing goals, that any optimization of which can only leave you unfulfilled, then you need to compromise one goal for another and another, and that means taking some easy routes. He’s right that any complication to a steadfast work ethic is a waygate for rationalizing surreptitious mindsets and accommodations to weak thinking, but he’s wrong that you should always take every hardship when faced with a choice in the midst of multiple goalposts.
He is trying to instill a mental culture in you that is very real and positive, because the choice to take every hard route is a symbolic totemic action that your brain responds to , it says embrace that which is painful and growth with follow. I just know that that mindset can be done to excess, and result in diminishing effectiveness when applied to specific real world problems that we will all face in life.
I’m finishing medical school in the United States with two learning disabilities, and I’m glad I realized this, so I thought I’d share it here.
He probably understands mental toughness better than I do, I’m not disagreeing with him, just characterizing your route(both easy and hard) requires knowing where you’re going so as to know what diverting resources looks like fundamentally for you and your goal(s).

So I’ve just signed up for a half Ironman in September and I’ll do my full one sometime next year… thanks a lot James😅

It was not rushed, no animosity, no angry outbursts, just simple honest conversation and a fair amount of smiles. With the amount of political diatribe we hear these days it was a welcome change. Definitely impressive, but I would argue Terry Fox running a marathon everyday for 143 days straight on one leg and filled with cancer is the more impressive voluntary endurance accomplishment. This was done back in the early 80's in often horrible weather conditions and living out of a van with a team of two, him and his best friend Doug.

Endurance under one's own control is inherently easier than under the control of outside forces. Years in prison, months under siege, even days against fierce competition is more rigorous than setting records. Endure Stalingrad, endure Treblinka, endure oppression. That's tough.

You know, many virtuosic ballerinas go through depression after their career ends. They (and you) are used to a level of physical activity that increases serotonin in the bloodstream for reuptake. When the physical intensity slows, the serotonin levels decrease. I think the research shows that 5 minutes a day, running at the top of your capacity increases serotonin in the body. Just some thoughts. I haven't done what you've done, but I've also had occasional massive sweating at night (usually during times of extreme physical activity)...I would love an explanation about the sweating if anyone has one!

Returning to this.... I'm that (near) 300 pound guy that ran a marathon. The limitations to doing that many iron man's in that many days wouldn't be lack of endurance. It would be lack of speed. Everything is slower at this weight. I'm down 6 pounds since my marathon a couple of weeks ago, but the endurance training doesn't really allow my body to lose weight, so I need to cut weight before my next big endurance challenge. It's just the nature of endurance events that you need to put in calories as you burn them, and I'm better than most at putting in calories while putting in 5 hour training days.

Listen, I'm a big fan of David Goggins, and clearly he is a truly amazing human being - but THIS ....101 Iron Man's in 101 days??? That shouldn't be humanly possible. Hell, if someone had done, a week of Iron Man's, I would have been highly impressed. This monster did 101 in 101 days!

Repeating an Iron Man is not "unimaginable", it's simple repetition, it becomes increasingly familiar.

Check out what Rait Ratasepp just did. You should have him on the podcast. 60 IM distance races in 60 days, averaging under 11 hours per day, average 3:14 marathons, no drafting on the bike ride, no IVs, 5800ft of climbing on each bike ride, 1000ft climbing each marathon. What James did is impressive, but Rait's performance might deserve "MOST ASTONISHING Feat In the History of ENDURANCE?" title.

Amazing man with incredible physical and mental stamina. Definitely someone worth looking up to. But I personally find his wife wants all the attention and there seems to be some arrogance there that suggests she lets the whole "team captain" thing really get to her head. She interrupts way too much. I'd rather watch an interview with just James.

You know I like James and what he's done is impressive. But for me there's way too much attention and impact from the external. So a message board is saying something. There were so many mentions of "now they can't say anything".... do it for you. My son is 12 and into endurance sports and I used this as a lesson for him. But again kudos amazing accomplishment

Okay, but (1h:50min) I am a medical student and marathoner and do hard things constantly and am still debilitatingly depressed, more so than I’ve ever been. It’s not all under your control and I didn’t hear anyone really address that.

    • @Snollygoster-
      @Snollygoster- Рік тому

Are you debilitatingly depressed if you're actually challenging yourself and overcoming things, or are you just depressed?
You always have some locus of control and part of that is framing. You're not debilitated. You might be depressed, you might not be fulfilled in the ways you want, which is contributing to it. But don't paint yourself in a more negative light than what reality shows. You're in med school and still trying to kick ass in marathons. You might not feel 100 percent, but you are not debilitated and don't trick yourself into thinking you are.

i guess there are some people who just die during these types of things. when i try anything physically endurance related (2 miles straight jogging, say), i promise, literally, that i feel my heart going crazy, i cant breathe, i'm fainting and seeing yellow/black (eyesight going out), i'm throwing up, head's pounding, everything is hurting, I'm confused.... etc. and this is all at, like, 1/10000 of a typical healthy person's limits.
I look perfectly in shape, but my arteries have to look like... idk... clumpy-rotted feta cheese that's been shoved through a drain pipe daily for 40 years...
I think the only reeason I'm curently alive is cuz i take 400 mg of coq10/d.
