When you sit back allow yourself to really dream, often the dream you have is beautiful but it’s also big, a little scary, and intimidating. Big dreams and big goals feel nearly impossible. It’s hard to fathom how you’re supposed to get from where you are in this moment to this far away goal that’s hard to conceptualize. James “Iron Cowboy” Lawrence completed 50 consecutive Iron-Distance Triathlons covering 7,030 miles with 0.24% of those miles completed indoors due to inclement weather. He joins Tom and breaks down the backlash he got for doing less than 17 miles indoors, and reveals the real mental fortitude and personal challenges he faced that lead him to deciding on completing 100 consecutive Iron-Distance Triathlons this time, plus one.
James talks about what it really means to do hard things, and how the secret of achieving your goals is in the journey, the failures, and the lessons that prepare you for the actual goal. He’s opening up about what his post-recovery has become and the challenges he’s overcoming for that as well.

    SHOW NOTES:
1:02 | Why Do the Hard Things
    7:10 | 100% Physical & 100% Mental
    13:56 | Goals Change Perspective
    20:08 | Confront Your Weakness
    24:59 | 101 Iron-Distance Triathlons
42:10 | Set Your Own Standards
    52:57 | Why Do 1 More Than 100
    58:37 | Post-Recovery Stage
    QUOTES:
“Doing hard things with intent is preparation for the unknown.” [2:18]
“Motion creates emotion, and you have to experience something and feel it in order to have an experience or knowledge with it.” [4:00]
“Mastering that continual conversation and beatdown that we have with ourselves is one of the most important pieces to that puzzle.” [9:42]
“Why people fail is because they rush straight to that big goal and they miss out on everything in between, which is the most important part.” [14:48]
“You need to meet yourself where you're at, on your journey. And over time, your perception perspective will change about what's possible for you.” [18:20]
“You wouldn't do something if you knew how damn hard it was going to be, and you wouldn't do something if you had all the answers, and you don't start as the expert.” [34:34]
“What you say you're going to do is the expectation, and if you deviate from that, it gives them permission to then attack you.” [43:23]
“We don't know what tomorrow is gonna bring, and if you quit now you're never going to find out and that would be the most tragic thing you do on your journey…” [49:46]

This is exactly my journey right now. 56 years old and after a heartbreaking divorce, I’m picking myself up and training for a 70.3. I am enjoying everyday that I get to train. I told myself I will not sit around and watch YT videos of people doing things….I’m going to do things. My 1st sprint was hard, and I was nervous. The goal was train, participate, finish and not get injured. Goal accomplished! Next…..

Everything he said is everything I know I need to to make the progress on my goals and ambitions yet I still need to master and internalize these words and attitudes. All of it makes sense but it's the convincing and having it settle in the mind that gets us going with these ideas. I need to listen to this a few more times and contemplate on it and I know I'll get moving.

I just want to thank you both for this POWERFUL video. I came on it per chance today and in hindsight it was NO ACCIDENT that I did. James Lawrence dropped so many gems during this dialogue that I will be revisiting this often to review. I must add that James' mental makeup reminds me of David Goggins minus alot of the cussin' lol. Both men are elite and special individuals. They are part of the minority that shows us what is truly "POSSIBLE" when we set our minds and bodies to something. Thanx to you both again for this powerful dialogue on being ELITE.

His statement is not a entirely true, i went through war as a child during the Yugoslav war, my family survived the concentration camps during few months, my father stayed the longest in that camp about 4 years (since we escaped before him) and my father said that the Pandemic was harder that his time in camps...
We've not been disabled by the pandemic but still mentality touched because it was tough especially when you're already traumatized.
While the statement is true to a degree it's not by any means a definitive truth, we all have a different story. Not sure if i handled it better or worse than anyone else though.

I happen to be watching this right after re watching your interview with David Goggins. Even someone as tough as Goggins had a big dream of being a seal but he took a lot of steps to get to that goal retook the tests three times he had to learn to read to take the test had to get into shape even get to a level where they would accept him in and he continued to grow from there he has a big goal in mind and he broke it down what is it going to take me to get there from where I am. I completely agree with this guy strategy of having your eye on the big prize but the realism to understand you have to build up yourself mentally and physically it's like prepping for a marathon when you've never got off the couch

@tombileu you’re such a great interviewer… thoughtful exchanges, always learn a ton. James is very inspiring and helpful lessons. I was overwhelmed with the thought…. What about & how do we learn from, honor and celebrate those people who life circumstances don’t have a finish line? Like the mom who has an adult child with autism, no language, in diapers, with over 20 seizures a day and a husband on his 5th deployment. I’m in awe of her mental toughness, endurance and ability to keep going in the absence of a manufactured finish line, purely because of the love and dedication to her family. Gut check as I register for another “endurance” race.

Guys, please, be kind to your body! Sometimes numbers don’t work for you! Looking at your eyes, you need to take things bit calmer & slow down. Over working is dangerous! Listen to your body, don’t compare yourself with others. Our ancestors did things differently & accomplished lots too! 😀🤔✌🏻😀sometimes it’s confusing as to why have all these records & all… live healthy happy humble simple…not overdo overwork & all….jeez!

@@jennifergopinath Looking at who's eyes? You definitely sound like a mother saying this but the reality for me is that i got over a 6 year opiate addition about a year ago and i use running to replace my opiate addiction, i have not found anything else that gives me the dopamine fix i need that is not coming from a drug.

I haven’t even watched this yet... I just love this guy! First heard about him on the mfceo project. #inspiration
Ok, so I wished they would have touched on how having a supportive partner is important in accomplishment. I feel like they missed an opportunity when James mentioned to his wife that he wanted to do 100 and she didn’t doubt it in any way.
It’s also interesting in how life is it own roadmap. Doing the 100 has broken him in ways that he couldn’t have envisioned, so now his goal/passion is longevity.
    SUPER cool interview. 🙏

As an endurance athlete I feel everything you are saying. When you started speaking about the 1 more and how you started alone in the pool and then bikers came out to support you I literally got goosebumps and tears formed in my eyes. I connect to that so much because who you are and what you represent brings people together. I was in the car telling myself to hold it together lol
This was an awesome interview! I have the hardest race of my life in 66 days. Beast of the East Ultra 100 miler with 20,000ft of elevation gain.
This just 🔥🔥 me up even more to continue to show up and be the person I say I am!
    THANK YOU!!

With anything in life you have to experience “it” to truly understand it. Take an apple pie. You can look at a picture of it but that’s not experiencing it. To smell the baked apples and brown sugar as the pie is still in the oven. And then seeing it taken out and the smells are even more intense. We haven’t even tasted it yet and yet we have…a little bit. Then comes the bite. The feeling of hot apples and warmth inside your mouth. And now The taste of the apples, sugar, and the crust, with the crunchy texture! Mmm.
Now just reading this is ok. But actually experiencing “it” is a whole other level.
We have to experience to truly appreciate and understand anything in life.

Great interview and really inspirational. I believe people such as James Lawrence provide important perspectives for others in their daily lives. I'm not sure how far into this video I was before I realized what his frame of reference was for his specific journey but right before I got that clarity I was already applying this mentally with respect to my life lol.
