  • We’ve progressed how we quarantine over the years just as we’ve progressed other aspects of our keeping like care, training, and enrichment. This is how we handle quarantine as we add new snakes as of 2021.

    love the video!
    you should do a video on why snakes are not dangerous, why they are not wild kept pets like lions or tigers.
    my sister thinks these things about snakes.
    I am not sure how to explain how beautiful and gentle these creatures are

      Thanks! I’ll add that to my requests list and figure out a way to frame that in a common sense way.

    Man Lori ,,,,, u is a wonderful animal lover ,,,, we need lots more like u n deed with ease '''' ,,, Wonderful video on the proper quarantine aspects at hand. Why is the micro chipping important is it because if the snake gets loose u can track it easier or something ,,, i mean why is that important ,,, i will research upon that. Lovely video and beautiful snake u have in deed '

      Microchip implants are a (mostly) permanent way to identify animals. If they are lost or stolen or if you have two or more that look identical you can identify them by scanning the chip. It is also one way to prove ownership of an animal and reunite with them during disasters. We chip our cats, dogs, horses, and snakes here. Great question, I may do a short video and say just what I’ve told you here!

    l think what you are doing is way above what most do, having the Nidovirus test is one of the biggest things one can do, after having a girl turn up with it, l prioritised this on my checklist. showering l used to do after being with any of my snakes in quarantine. Sometimes even washing my hair if they climbed on me. Yes l would handle them, as some just wanted to come out and climb on me and l did not want to dismiss this behaviour. l think especially if you have a large collection and have regular intake of snakes, quarentine is one of the most important things you can do and 12 monthly wellness checks, sometimes this is above manys paygrade, but being attentive in your snakes lives and observation for changes costs nothing.

      Yeah, I went from doing nothing to this as I learned and gained knowledge. I’m going back now as I can and having exams and Nido tests on all those earlier snakes now.

    Great video Lori! I was wondering at what size do you recommend getting the snakes microchipped? My corn is so small compared to the larger bodied pythons. How big were your corn snakes when they got theirs? In rodent facilities I know they use sentinels for regular testing and if anything pops up than the whole room gets tested. I don't know if that is an approach that would work for larger reptile collections too??

    • @LoriTorrini
      @LoriTorrini  3 роки тому +3

      Great question! I do wait until they’re bigger. Cornsnakes and even the pythons are so tiny as babies, I wait until the Corns are closer to adult size and the Carpet pythons are usually beefing up enough that I feel comfortable doing it a little sooner. The Royals are usually thick enough as babies. The chip goes under the skin so I want enough size to make sure there is sufficient skin for it to fit underneath without really causing a bulge.

    Hi Lori, Thank you for this informative video! Do you have an opinion on purchasing used snake enclosures, in terms of whether or not that enclosure should be quarantined for a period of time (after being cleaned) before a snake is placed in it? Does your answer depend on the material the enclosure is made of? Thanks in advance!

    • @LoriTorrini
      @LoriTorrini  2 роки тому

      I always inquire as to what was kept in the enclosure previously. Then, if I purchase it I clean it with soap and water, then something like food grade hydrogen peroxide, then alcohol , and then again with soap and rinse with water. I do let it sit for a while before using it after all the cleaning but the length of time depends on what was in it previously and what I’m putting into it.

      @@LoriTorrini Thank you, Lori! I am considering an enclosure for a hognose that was previously a home for a bearded dragon. I appreciate the advice you provided and thank you for the time you took to do so. LOVE your channel and hope to be a snake mom and patreon in the very near future.

    can you please recommend the best enclosure size upgrade for my 7 months albino Darwin carpet, i want to upgrade in a month or 2 but i want to do the largest size necessary for when she is full grown as i dont want to keep buying enclosures thanks

    • @LoriTorrini

      There will always be variability within a species when it comes to adult size. It is effected by generics, nutrition, exercise, etc. What size are size are her parents and any adult siblings? They can average 5’ - 6.5’ as adults. They really like to climb and I rarely see mine on the ground at all. 2’ height minimum but if you’re able to go 3’ -4’ they will appreciate that and use it. I would go with 6’ length if you’re just wanting to invest in one enclosure for the life of the animal.

    If someone gets their first couple snakes from a breeder at the same time like you did at first, would you now recommend quarantining them?

    • @LoriTorrini
      @LoriTorrini  4 місяці тому +1

      If there are no other snakes or reptiles already in the home what are you quarantining the snakes from? If there are other snakes/reptiles in the home then, yes, quarantine until vet checks, including fecal and viral screens are completed.
