Welcome to Serpentes Sunday for June 23, 2024. This week I am revisiting perch-building as I demonstrate four (4) different methods I routinely use to install perches in my snakes' enclosures. 1. Using a hole saw to make holes the PVC pipe can fit through on two sides of the enclosure and then capping the ends on the exterior of the enclosure with PVC end caps. 2. Using PVC end caps with eye ho...

I have been considering this so thanks for reviewing it!
Thanks for sharing, Lori! I'm planning on welcoming my first snake to my home soon, and your videos have been invaluable. I'm so grateful that I'll be able to begin my journey with such a strong baseline of knowledge, and have a cooperative relationship with my snake family member from the very beginning! I hope you and your animals are doing well!
Im so happy my royal seems to be more toeards the outgoing end and ive target trained him now thanks to yours and Bob GRP videos !
hey wondering if you can help me. i want a snake that is no bigger than medium size, wants it to interact with me, slow moving, mythical, semi arboreal, curious, but also ok to sit in my hand or lap for some time but no as much as a ball python.
@@arianhilton3752There may not be one species that meets every one of your criteria so you will have to prioritize things in order of importance. Are you asking to schedule a consultation session? Email me at BehaviorEducationLLC@gmail.com
You lucky duck, I want a Savu so bad!!
We have 5 of them here, 2 adults and 3 juveniles.
@@LoriTorrini will you consider whether to captive breed any of them, or are they purely for research?
I love all the Star Trek references :)
Yeah. Lori is an absolute turbonerd and I am 100% here for it
This is a cool idea. Although, you can easily achieve this by angling a hide and putting it below the substrate level.
i think ima use them
Hmm I might have to get a couple of these
I love the items on exotic enrichment, great quality. I have two playgrounds and a pumpkin hide. He is always adding new things too.
I added dig boxes to my hognose terrarium but he doesn't seem to like them as well as when his substrate was dirt/sand mix. He likes the jungle gym tho.
I like the idea and the design but the price will have me think of my own version of a burrow hide.
My snake really likes empty ring binders. She tucks between the cardboard and the sides of the folder press on her body. I think she really enjoys the gentle force of the binder on her skin. I have three empty bidners around the room and ever since I put them there she ignored all the other "hides" I placed around.
I can't take credit for this idea because I heard it from someone else at some point, I believe it was Bob Bledsoe, but when I look to see if an opening is a possible risk for a snake getting stuck I always want it to be big enough for the snake to fit through twice with room to spare. This is just in case the snake ever gets part way through the opening, but then doubles back before they get the rest of their body clear of the opening. But even with that consideration in mind this hide doesn't seem to be a huge risk for a snake getting stuck and I might have to get one some day!
Sargon really went "Where are my pheromones and what did you do with them" In regards to the legs, I was thinking they were to a degree an issue aswell in case the snake was burrowing around the buried hide and somehow got their face stuck between the two legs. Otherwise it is a nice hide but an option to have a base plate seems like a good idea to me still in case you need to remove the hide but keep the snake in it.
thanks i've been wondering about those!
A question on target training; my royal is trained to the point that she'll go into a tight S-shaped stike position an inch or two away from the target ready for the rat, but hasn't ever made the move to bridge that final gap and actually touch the target to get the reward--is touching the target a necessary step or is her following it to close strike proximity enough? How can I help her realize that touching the target is the behavior I want from her?
@@Cool_Story_Bruh It sounds like you have classically conditioned her to associate the target as a signal that food will follow and both want to teach her that the target alone doesn’t signal food but that it signals an opportunity to and reinforcement (food) contingent upon performing a specific behavior first. These are two different types of training and uses for the target. To change from one to the other show the target and wait for her to make any substantial move in its direction or acknowledge it and then reinforce. Wait longer and longer each training session until she is progressing further and further. I have a step by step target training playlist and video that shows the steps. Some snakes learn this quickly but in my experience Royals take longer than average to progress. Be patient.
@@LoriTorriniShe does take the substantial move in the direction of the target and I do wait to reinforce, it's just she doesn't actually touch the target when she gets to it like I've seen Bob's of Green Room Pythons do--they'll follow, like mine does, but then they'll touch it with their nose too and not just stop right in front of it. I'm past the association stage of pairing the target with food in front of it--I show her just the target and wait for her to approach where I want her before presenting food, just like in this video. For instance, after completing the pairing stage, my cat picked up that I want him to actually touch the target and not just go to it after the first time only presenting the target, because I gave him the treat after he walked up to the target and sniffed it first. My royal though won't touch the target with her nose yet, she will follow it though, and stop just short of it. I'm worried about waiting too long after she goes where I want her to reinforce, because what if instead of figuring out that I want her close that final one inch gap and touch the target she thinks I'm not going to reinforce the substantial movement? Like running a 100m dash, but stopping at 99.9m--you made the movement, you're right there, just touch the finish line
Now that looks amazing and great ideas
What size tub is that and how much did it cost?
It is about 38” long and 18-20 inches tall Ana deep. I think got them at Target or online from Amazon.

Where do you get these pens?
@@RacksandRoyals They are soft sided dog exercise pens. You can find them online or in pet shops. They’re very commonly available. I get mine through Amazon or Chewy’s generally.

You are so great! Thanks for doing this. Wish we found you before we bought our snake babies! Off topic: you are super cute! Love your glasses 🥰 We have one naturally curious sweet snake, and one cranky boy. We would love some help with him. How do we become a client?
@@RacksandRoyals Thank you. I offer group and private training and consultations locally and remotely worldwide through www.Patreon.com/BehaviorEducation
Thank you for the video! I heard lots of people saying they "sterilize" their drift wood by spray hydrogen peroxide or even just leave it out in the sun, while they do a poor job of even disinfecting it.
Is there a risk of too much salmon to the hognose? Long story short: I have to wrap the mouse with a thin piece of salmon or he regects it.
How do you keep them warm this long?
@@BriDia3 Can you explain what you mean by your question? Keep the snake warm or the feeders?
@@LoriTorrini the feeders
Question: carpet pythons have the reputation for being super bity and bredls for being much more mild mannered. Is this true? Which snakes are the most like royal pythons and which are least like in the carpet python complex or family?
@@Cool_Story_Bruh Morelia are nothing like Royal Pythons. I work with both here and there is really no comparison.
Not in species typical behavior I know, but temperament or willingness to bite? Are bredls in general calm snakes and do carpets deserve the reputation of being overtly aggressive/defensive?
@@Cool_Story_Bruh I work with all species of Morelia except Imbricata and viridis, and I do not find them to be “bitey” but you would need to define what you mean by that. Snakes , and other animals, bite for two reasons: to acquire food and to create distance; they don’t bite for no reason. It is not something they routinely do. Bredli are confident, bold, and self-assured as a whole and so are less easily bothered by things than some other species. They adapt well to living near people.
Aww Lori! Look at their adorkable [adorable + dork] faces! How can you say no to them so easily? I really like my Dubia enclosures for my snakes. It's given me a lot more room to put things up for them.
I know! You did a great job setting yours up for Frankie. He’s doing so well in it. 😊
I really enjoyed this!
I love this! I wonder if it would still work well with an already socialized snake? Ive had my ball python for 6 years but this past week he bit me pretty bad during feeding, so im being extra careful and id like to start implementing more choice handling. Any advice on starting this when hea already comfortable with touch and handling?
@@raydawson8236 I start every snake that arrives here this way whether it’s has been previously habituated to handling or not. We take in many species with different backgrounds and of different ages and we just start from scratch with them.
@@LoriTorrini good to know! I'll be moving soon, so I'm going to try to have a room suitable to start choice handling with him. I do have a tank that slides open from the top, rather than the side- have you noticed any difference in success with different tank types?
I want to do this for my carpet python, I'm just afraid that she'll try to escape.
@@mirkrovi is this an adult Carpet Python? If she’s in a free space such as this you need to be nearby to watch her. She can exercise freely in an exercise tent or snake prodded room if you cannot be there to supervise.
@@LoriTorrini yes, she's a 3-year-old zebra carpet python, and very spicy. I have been working with her for the last 6 months and we have gained quite a bit of trust between each other, but true to their nature and temperament, they are just always ready and always aware of everything around them.
How long are you waiting before returning the snake to his enclosure after eating?
It depends on the snake species and individual snake. If they’re loose in an open space like this and they don’t put themselves away, I just wait until I notice they find a spot to rest and then I put them back. If they’re in a contained exercise area then it just depends, I may let them stay out for several hours or days or put them back immediately if they indicate they want out of the contained area they’re in. This really needs to be individualized for each snake.
I've been lucky, both my royals sought out my hand first. Pedro would even nose bump my thumb from an early age demanding a rub on top of his head. Lola loves rubbing her throat. Having your snake trust you is paramount, there should never be fear in an interaction. Trust first.
This was really well done. I'm one of your patreons and have a request. Have you ever created a set of doors on one of the the long sides of a tub like this. People seem to do it. If you have experience with it, I'd love a demo video on that from you.
A suggestion - you can maybe use a piece of double sided sticky tape, a Command adhesive strip, or a little bit of hot glue or sticky tack to hold the perch holders onto the wall so you can drill the holes. For my recently built Colorado travel condos, I used wooden dowels and sanded and sealed them. I drilled a hole in the end of it and melted a hole in my tub walls (could also drill), and screwed a bolt into the end of each dowel. We will see soon how well that worked when I bring them soon!
Cats are evil... sorry, if it's an unpopular opinion.
Ah,she's cute. I really enjoyed your other video where you tried to rebox the round tent that the creators clamed to have corners...I'd have done it exacally the way you did. I'm ewally enjoying your videos and have learned a lot.
😊 Thank you.
@@LoriTorrini Your welcome.

haha, the next video is on how to vacuum clean your cat after they roll around in your snake enclosure! Tuvok is looking so amazing, he has grown so much!
I clicker trained my cat to learn the word "down" anytime she gets up on my counter or on a reptile enclosure I just say "down" and down she goes 😁 she's adorable she loves rolling in the Aspen 😻
That’s a great idea!
Great video! What kind of shake was that at 8:00
Show us how to target train a cat.
It’s really easy. I do have a cat target trained, I can film some videos about that.
Not a mess! Making it comfy!
Haha, You tried telling a cat no and to get out of something? Should know better Lori, they don't like to do it the easy way. :D
Love the snakes! And the Tardis ;)
👌
Great video! Do you need to reinforce their behaviour with food every time using the targets?
Yes. When using targets ti direct behavior they should be on a continuous reinforcement schedule. You want ti reinforce each time. You can pair different targets with different reinforcers so one target may be paired with food and another target with something else. The reinforcers I use most frequently are food and freedom from confinement so the snakes learn that one target means the opportunity to earn food and another target means the opportunity to come out of their enclosure and feee roam, etc.
@@LoriTorrini Perfect! Thank you for your response!
