That’s why you use a temp gun. You measure where the snake will be. I put my probe between the heat mat and the tub. I just have to set the thermostat to higher than what I want the hotspot to be. So I set it to around 101/102 degrees and it heats up the hotspot to around 88-92 degrees.
Alina McPherson I don’t really consider a gun am extra measure. It’s honestly essential to me to know exactly what temp the warm spot is at. I put into consideration the substrate and the material of the enclosure between the heat mat and the surface as well. Bc if you set the thermostat at 92, the heat on the surface of the substrate is going to be much lower than 92. I usually have to set my thermostat to over 100 to get the warm spot to be 92.
I use a heat pin and melt the holes in the plastic. I do recommend doing this outside due to the smell. Also let the plastic dry before adding your snake.
For drilling holes, You can do from outside in. To fix rough and sharp edges, Use a sharp, hot knife to easily cut off the edges, and to smooth it down use a lighter! Works for me and makes it smoother so they don’t get hurt!
I recently got 6 ball pythons. 5 came in terrirums and 1 came in a tub none were eating. I transferred the one in a tub in extra terrium and it made him super aggressive and stoped eating out of nowhere. So I moved it to a bigger tub cause the one it came in was too small. Ate immediately and calmed down. The other 5 came with severe shedding problems and the smallest was so dry it fell like sand paper. So seeing how well the tub worked for my first BP. I transferred all 5 into tubs. They all immediately were able to shed and started eating again. At least for me the tub the way too go. My sandpaper ball python now feels normal.
Looks good! I am so happy you have a thermostat! There are a lot on Amazon for great prices. Just a note I didn’t hear you mention, ideally you want to have your enclosure set up for a week prior to getting your BP. This way you can monitor your temps and make sure your UTH and thermostat are working. That’s because of exactly what you said about the thermostat being set high. One of mine for example has to be set at 108° to get a 90° reading! It took a few days to figure that out. You’re absolutely right that you don’t want that probe inside the enclosure, it’s too easy for your snake to move it away from the heat pad and then allowing your pad to overheat. Also a hygrometer measured humidity not temp. 🙂 Takeout containers made fantastic DIY free hides! As for BP’s soaking, I personally think it’s a good idea to have a dish large enough for then to soak. Yes it’s a sign of something wrong but BP’s can’t tell us what’s wrong so why not give them a way to communicate if need be? Your BP is absolutely adorable! Oh, aspen is awful for BP’s because it doesn’t good humidity and it can mold. I have to say I’m really impressed with how well you did your research and how well prepared you were! And I LOVE that table in the background.
You know, that is the best reason I have heard for the large water dish - give the snake a way to communicate IF something is wrong. And for many inexperienced keepers using fish tanks as cages with screen tops, improper humidity can be a lingering problem. I see from your first sentences that temperature controllers are important to you - amen, they should be among the first things people buy when planning on a reptile pet. I like seeing posts like yours, makes me think some of these reptile pets have a chance.
if you have your thermostat set to 108 and it’s only reading 90 in the tank then the ambient temp if definitely too low. ambient temp should be in mid 80’s so the heat may only has to heat the spot 5-10 degrees
I used you as one of my references for setting up my new snake tub. I've been temp gunning this thing for the past couple of hours lol. He's coming on Tuesday... so excited!!!😁😁😁 Thanks for the video!!

Hi :) You have a wonderful little snake there! A few things could be improved in the set up though: first off paper towel substrate doesn't support their burial behaviour, which they display in the wild and do so in captivity as well if given the opportunity. I would recommend a mixture of eco earth forest floor or coconut substrate (not aspen, since it doesn't hold humidity very well). UTH is not an ideal way of heating since it only warms the surface, but not the air temperature -I especially in combination with deeper substrate it's pretty much useless. Also I would definitely recommend to give your snake a much larger tub and more enrichment - you mentioned that your setup lacks branches and such. It is okay to let them exercise when handing but it's definitely better to give them the opportunity to climb on their own terms. It improves muscle tone and will encourage your ball to be much more inquisitive and curious on their nightly exploring.
toni Boni ball pythons don’t need that much humidity. In the wild they spend their time in day in termite mounds and come out at night. Termite mounds are hot and humid and to simulate that I would recommend putting a humidity box in the warm side of the enclosure. Also aspen is ok but can sometimes get stuck on the snakes food when feeding. If you want to learn how to make humidity boxes you can see how on Snake Discovery’s channel.
@@karyna7662 that is a complete lie, I don't know where you gathered that from. I drill from the outside in, but I use a nail filer to file down the sharp plastic. Now that I think about it, this is probably a lot easier and less painful
@@Ally-uh3bn yeah I’ve bred and kept them for 30 years, every time I provide taller enclosures with branching, they utilize it all, and are often times caught perching. So anyways.
Big no no on placing the probe below like that because it has higher risk of malfunction and also causing electrical shortage and possible house fire. Best result is to leave the probe hanging to the side of the enclosure to where the mat location is nearest to and that will work perfectly fine.
Great video - thanks for sharing. I'm getting a ball python for my daughter so looking at a temporary set up before moving into a bioactive environment. Thanks
Okay this is really helpful, I have glass tanks for my BPs and I can't keep humidity in there so I had to move to plastic bins! I'm hoping this will work better for them
Truthfully I would just get a soldering iron, heat it up to about 360, and just melt some holes in the enclosure; this ensures there are no sharp edges :)
Please fix the link to the hygrometer. I have searched all the pages on Amazon and can't find it and anything close to what you are using doesn't have great reviews so I am a little scared to try them. I also have a question about positioning the hygrometer probe .... could you not drill a hole to fit the probe through so you could keep the base of it on the outside of the tub? Thx in advance.
I got that same tub and when the heat pad is on it makes a super strong plastic smell. I washed it with hot water and soap let it sit out all day they washed it down with vinegar and then washed it again with soap and hot water. The plastic isn’t melting. How did you clean yours to keep the smell away?
So currently most of my cool side and warm side temperatures are fine but as far as basking spot, the Uth isn’t making it quite hot enough, should I add another or how would I make a basking spot for warmer area?
The hygrometer link doesn’t work it takes me to my previous orders can you provide a better link, please? This video was really helpful though since I’m looking for a better way keep my the the restart of my collection
The Heating mats that I have (similar to the one in your video) do not seem to get very hot. I have had them for all of my enclosures. I put the thermometer inside the tank (stand alone thermometer) and under the substrate, but I can hardly get it to 80 degrees. I am concerned that attaching it to a thermometer would not make a difference because my understanding is that the thermometer just shuts off the heating mat once it has gotten too hot. Can any thermometer attachments actually increase the temperature (from the temperature of the mat when directly plugged into the outlet)?
Itd be best to invest in an actual zoomed UTH mat. Best brand I've come across so far and they do reach temperatures exceeding 103 degrees which will be more than you'll ever need. The thermostat is a controller that YOU have the option to set. So invest in a thermostat and you get to set the temperature to keep it at, if you want it higher itll keep the mat on longer until it reaches that temperature. You may also be using faulty thermometers or placing them in compromising locations. Definitely ingest in the thermometer though, theres a great one for 18 buck on amazon just search: BN-LINK Digital Heat Mat Thermostat Controller
@@PeterPicks Thank you for the reply. I actually only use zoo med mats. I think that the adhesive wore out since technically you are not supposed to move them but I've gotten new tanks. I use plastic tubs for my ball python and I found that if I place the tub over carpet it heats a lot more with contact. So that with the thermostat has worked very well.
@@hayleybloom1659 oh! See when you remove the uth from a tank It can actually damage the electronics inside,- that's why it voids the warranty if you move them. Moving them is likely what's causing the lack of heating and I also wouldnt recommend keeping them on carpet. What you should get is hvac tape (you can get some off amazon as well) and use it to secure the uth to your bin. Its heat resistant tape and safe to use on your enclosures. Just make sure you get that thermostat to monitor your temps.

Ball pythons love to climb as well, I do the tub like yours but taller with branches, she’s always climbing when out.
Technically no they don’t they aren’t a climbing species but people who do give them the chance to climb find they do use it
@@Ally-uh3bn yeah I’ve bred and kept them for 30 years, every time I provide taller enclosures with branching, they utilize it all, and are often times caught perching. So anyways.
@@Ally-uh3bnresearch your snake. Female tend to be more terrestrial, while the males are known to be arboreal. Birds are part of their diet.
First video to answer all the questions I've had about tubs. We done.
Big no no on placing the probe below like that because it has higher risk of malfunction and also causing electrical shortage and possible house fire. Best result is to leave the probe hanging to the side of the enclosure to where the mat location is nearest to and that will work perfectly fine.
Pro tip is use a step bit and when done drilling use a cone dremel stone to sand just the hole. It can also be use to open them up more
Hello! Only 3 of the links are still active: any way we can get up updated link list? Thanks so much! Awesome video.
Great video - thanks for sharing. I'm getting a ball python for my daughter so looking at a temporary set up before moving into a bioactive environment. Thanks
"Start shit on fire" 🤣
awesome :)
Okay this is really helpful, I have glass tanks for my BPs and I can't keep humidity in there so I had to move to plastic bins! I'm hoping this will work better for them
Nice tattoo 👍 I was only looking at the tattoo and nothing else 😂
Try using a soldering iron to make your holes. It’s way easier and no sharp edges
the video i was looking for. Thank you
Truthfully I would just get a soldering iron, heat it up to about 360, and just melt some holes in the enclosure; this ensures there are no sharp edges :)
Thanks im using this for a corn thanks for the help!
if you already did it how did it go
So glad I got a temp gun now with corona going on and thermometers are limited as I can use it on anyone without touching them
TaylorTot LMAOOO smart!
Mm not really
So ball pythons don't actually need over head heating ? As long as the heat mat is at the right temp ?
Correct because they are not a basking species, Unless you have a thick substrate layer like in a bioactive enclosure then you would need a heat lamp

I found this and it looks very similar and has great reviews!
@@abigailchrane6742 Thank you!
For the wholes I recommend a wood burner that’s what I use and it works so much better then a drill just be careful it gets rly hot
So helpful, thank you!!
Need to add a thermostat onto that prevents it from over heating etc. I have a thermostat on each tote/rack system.
She has a thermostat are you dumb? Did you not watch the video?
Or use a soldering iron..for the holes..
Would this same enclosure be okay for a cribo
What do you do with the temperaturen at night? Is there a setting on your thermostat for that?
What do you mean at night? It stays the same…
@@Ally-uh3bnsome people do a temperature drop sinds it cools down at night in the wild
This video was very helpful thank you
Great video. Nicely done, very thorough and well explained. Got my sub, looking forward to more.
Hey just use a soldering iron to make the holes, do it outside though don’t breath the fumes
I got that same tub and when the heat pad is on it makes a super strong plastic smell. I washed it with hot water and soap let it sit out all day they washed it down with vinegar and then washed it again with soap and hot water. The plastic isn’t melting. How did you clean yours to keep the smell away?
You can also use a razor blade to cut off those sharp ends after drilling. 🤙🏼
I'm doing some research and looking to get a baby ball python in July, how long would this size of a tub enclosure last a young snake?
What should i do if the other side of the tub isnt at the desired temp?
The link to the hygrometer isnt working 😓
I think I will make holes only on warm side so the humidity stays better. So like half of the box I make holes.
So currently most of my cool side and warm side temperatures are fine but as far as basking spot, the Uth isn’t making it quite hot enough, should I add another or how would I make a basking spot for warmer area?
How do you out the paper towel down like keep it down without having to tape it
The hygrometer link doesn’t work it takes me to my previous orders can you provide a better link, please? This video was really helpful though since I’m looking for a better way keep my the the restart of my collection
Alina McPherson what is it with people saying unnecessary shit to people who want the exact same heat gun she has in the video? 😐😐
Alina McPherson i said this shit 5 months ago get a life weirdo
So we just gone act like she ain’t fine af 😩🤦🏾♂️🖤
If your tub dosent have side latches you can always purchase screen clips
Would i be able able to add paper towels and then aspen on top? So that even if he moves the aspen he wont be directly on the heat?
safiy98 it won’t hurt them to be directly on the heat if you have a thermostat to make sure the heating pad doesn’t get too hot
safiy98 aspen is not for ball pythons it doesn’t hold enough humidity it’s for desert snakes and reptiles who don’t need high humidity
Ashley Ann Yeah im using ecoearth and the bark for my ball python. He’s so happy and shedding great!
safiy98 eco earth and forest floor is my favorite combo for them
Let’s say the cool side is to hot how would you cool it down or what if it’s to cold how would you heat it up
The Heating mats that I have (similar to the one in your video) do not seem to get very hot.
Definitely ingest in the thermometer though, theres a great one for 18 buck on amazon just search:
BN-LINK Digital Heat Mat Thermostat Controller
Stunning snake
Stunning lady too
i go away every weekend from friday to saturday. If i set the heat pad to the right temp is it okay to leave it like that for 3 days?
As long as you have a thermostat it should be okay
Are holes that big safe for your snake exploring and possibly rubbing their nose on the hole area causing damage to the snakes facial area?
