  • To people who don't live in Las Vegas, it is a name that when said can make people smile.
It is a place international tourists have on their bucket lists and those who live in Las Vegas, are proud but also know the pains.

Who do you think would work there if not for citizens?
Would they just have a staff that lived in the hotels?
Would that staff then be unallowed to marry to bear children? 🤔 Interesting concept!!

You obviously fail at logic. The city would fail if there were no families. The purpose of a city is to be a place where people would want to live.

The strip doesn’t care one tiny bit about the locals and haven’t for years now.

As a tourist over 20+ years I found myself spending less and less time on the strip -- high hotel prices, resort fees, etc., eventually branching out to off-strip hotels and enjoying more local attractions. Now I moved here. I still use my MGM free self parking to walk around the strip. I came from Chicago...parking was insane---think starting at $40 for a couple hours.
Any big city won't care one tiny bit about the locals.

This is happening everywhere. It's not just Vegas. This one of the many downsides of social media. People post about places and then its seems world flocks there. Try living in a beach community. There is NO off-season anymore. People came to visit and never leave. Small remote towns? People move there and work remotely (and drive up all the prices). It's the future unfortunately.

I was born in 1970 in Vegas and lived my whole life here. Living in Vegas sucks now. Over-crowded, people crawling on top of people everywhere, ridiculously expensive in every way. Sure it's evolved and become more sophisticated and that's great, but no one gives a s**t about the longtime locals who helped build this place have called it home for decades. Vegas has become a place that you need to make a 100k per year minimum to live decently. It was not like that most of my life here. It was always booming and was a mecca for small business owners but after the pandemic when housing prices skyrocketed and half of California moved here that was truly the end for Vegas as I knew it in so many ways. There are really only traces of it left. However, I still have a lot of memories of great times when this place was much smaller and friendlier from local businesses to the casinos and everything in between.

It wasn't always glamorous. A lot of people used to move to Vegas and had to leave because a family member got addicted to gambling and couldn't stop. My dad worked out in Oklahoma and couldn't stop going to casinos. I think it's one thing when you realize you have a problem and hold yourself back, but when a person has no impulse control/moral barrier that governs them, you need to intervene. Vegas wasn't glamorous before at all. It's just the people who could survive there weren't addicted to gambling.

My friend - it's always about pro's and con's.... There are other parts of the country you could choose to live, but will you make as much $$ ? Will you have access to an international airport, good hospitals, worldclass entertainment, etc., etc.? We have been visiting Las Vegas for over 30 years - and now we are 2-year locals (originally from CO - not CA!) and LOVING this life in Summerlin! Not sure what your beef is.... You can move to the SE United States, or the Dakotas, or Michigan... or other spots - but do those places offer you the income opportunities, the economic diversity and the rising real estate values? Your pick - The only thing certain in our lives are death, taxes, and CHANGE! Learn to deal with the change or find another path/place. Wishing you the best.... but PLEASE stop whining.

I remember during the recession 2007 onwards, the casinos were courting locals. There were huge buffet discounts if you’re local. I felt sooo important. My family would eat there twice a week. It was so nice to show off your local ID! One day they don’t accept local IDs for discount. 😢 worse after the pandemic all buffets disappeared! For 15 years my family staycationed at the Mandalay at least once a year. We loved the buffet. One Beer at the gift shop costs $7.00 two years ago. I’d buy me at least ten and roam around the casino. Next year 2023, it doubled! This year we book at the Mandalay. Maybe beer tripled? So bye bye Strip. The investors don’t care about locals. Seriously We feel disrespected. they courted the locals during the recession. Now they don’t care. Look at the F1, so many small businesses affected, us locals suffered going to work. Nobody cared. This Clark County Commission confronted with cash strapped investors just keep on approving stuff regardless of the locals feelings. Truly they don’t care about us. watch out. What parks do you go to? Have not seen that on this side of town. In the cooler months I drive up to the Lone Mountain equestrian park and walk the trail or hike the mountain. The only poo I see is from the horses and we expect that. Sometimes a bit of dog poo from the few that don't curb their dogs. Have not seen any humans doing that there as they have a porta potty by one of the parking lots, another by the horse ring and a standard park restroom by the play areas. The parks and trails here in Summerlin are also free of human poo and homeless people. Select a better park to visit.

My family used to live in Las Vegas from 1974 when my grandfather moved there with my grandmother, aunt and dad because my grandfather was in the United States Air Force and got sent to Nellis Air Force Base and when he retired from the US Military, after 28 years of service, a year later my grandfather decided that he wanted to stay there so he and my grandmother brought a house in an area which was pretty much the edge of town about a mile or so east of what is now Charleston and Buffalo. My stayed in the Las Vegas Area until my dad and I moved in 2012. So I can say is that people were complaining about many of these problems in the mid 1970s and continued to do so until we left. This is nothing new nor was the explosive growth of the Las Vegas Area and Clark County. The Las Vegas Area and Clark County saw massive population growth from the time my family first moved to Las Vegas in 1974, and this would continue with massively explosive growth with just a couple of short slowdowns in the early 1980s, and early 1990s, until the Great Recession in the late 2000s. That was the slowest period of growth since at least my grandfather first got stationed in the Las Vegas Area in 1974. The late 2000s a very odd time to be living in Las Vegas because not only wasn’t the Strip and Downtown not doing well but the numbers of housing being built and people moving here really slowed down and the are would not start to recover until the early 2010s. So many of the issues in this video are nothing new.

I moved to Las Vegas in 1992 and use to enjoy hanging out on the strip in many of the old classic hotel/casinos. But after about a decade + later, it just wasn’t the same vibe that I once enjoyed before. The old hotels were torn down. The casino lounge acts that we use to go listen to were changing to please the younger generation or completely disappearing all together. I can go on and on… I love Las Vegas. But going to strip or even downtown these days doesn’t happen very much.

I went in 2010. I could tell I was catching the very tail end of what made Vegas great. I met a local at a show. It was a crappy show but I could tell he was reliving the old days. The Elvis stuff was long gone. I went back a few times in between then and 2020 and it was easier to see what was changing. I know in 2010, food there was incredibly, absurdly cheap away from the tourist traps. Five or so years later, everything was super-expensive. All the casinos were getting a generic look and whatever magic I noticed in 2010 was somehow also fading away too.

It's called "sin city" for a reason but even that title no longer exists way too many "stroller parents" going up and down the strip. I too miss the old 9.99 stake dinner days but Vegas is in a constant momentum of change, nothing on it is really meant to last. It's always on to the next money generating thing. The Las Vegas Weekly used to have a calendar at the back of their magazine (and online) that showed all of the events that locals could get into for free. Marquee on Mondays, Tao on Tuesdays. Focus on locals again? How much money you got to pay for that?

Take it from a Floridian who lives just outside of Tampa FL and travels to Vegas throughout the year because the company I work for is headquartered there. Get off the strip. Downtown LV is amazing, but not for living. Places like Henderson NV have reasonable pricing for homes/rentals and only a quick drive to the action.

All these greedy rip off overpriced hotels that don't give 2 craps about locals.

Even my passengers noticed a huge difference when they come back. They come to visit family or stay in the hotels. When they’re going home, they’ll ask me if I ever go on the strip. I’ll say yeah, when I have to pass by to get to the 15.

Why should locals go anywhere near the strip when casinos want to charge us residents for parking. At least the Chicago mob took care of residents. The corporate mob does not give 1F!!

It’s not a Vegas problem. America doesn’t care its citizens so why would a city.

Huh…well now I guess they understand how the rest of us in Nevada feel when all our tax dollars go there and the politicians seem to forget about the other 90% of the state

I have worked in Vegas on and off for 20 years, recently with SWG and Aristocrat, but I have to say I underestimated what a nightmare a lot of the road construction has become since I never go near the strip and had to chaperone my parents at the south end of the street. I am an F1 fan, but seeing it first hand, I realized dropicana and the nightmare all around it. I live around the corner from where Bugsy got popped
