  • Squatters beware. Florida's latest law makes it easier to remove those illegally staying on private property. Gov. Ron DeSantis signed HB 621 into law Wednesday, eliminating squatters' rights in the state. "We are putting an end to the squatters scam in Florida," DeSantis said. "While other states are siding with the squatters, we are protecting property owners and punishing criminals looking to game the system."

So basically to get around this new law, all squatters have to do is rent for a month under a lease, then stop paying the rent. This will turn them in to squatters, and the property owner will now have the long process of evicting them. As a property owner myself, this really doesn’t change the eviction process much. Getting a non-payer out is a long expensive process, as this is considered a “civil case.” The dead beat “tenants” can now occupy that property, and because that is considered a “civil case” police can’t be called to get them out because they are considered “tenants” and not “squatters.”
