But I made some adjustments in my Saitek X52 curves making them less sensitive and yesterday I was able to refuel for about 10-15 seconds. I like to think I'm pretty good at AAR, and I think you covered pretty much everything. First thing is to relax completely, then keep visual markers on the tanker aircraft, track those to see if you are moving relative to the tanker, and avoid chasing the basket at all costs. However, if you need to slide sideways or match the tanker's turn, do not roll, but use your feet. I know this can be a weird concept for the hardcore jet jocks, but the pedals are still useful.
I have heard that advice but I very personally find that using too much rudder screws me up more than too much roll. But everyone has their way of getting it done. I've even seen guys split their F/A-18 throttles and use one engine for speed adjustments.
Spudknocker Yes sir, I definitely split the throttles in the Hornet. I don’t think this will work in the Tomcat, because the wider engine spacing might induce too much yaw.
Hey Spudknocker, thanks so much for doing this video, your absolutely right in your thinking here, I am personally very comfortable refuelling and have nearly all my squad up to speed but your thinking here has given me an insight to some things I may not have considered in trying to get my squadron up to speed, so I will share this video with my friend who is not quite able to get there and I really think it will help him. I Recently Learned how to A2A refuel and do it successfully on the F/A-18C and I gotta say this video really did help me to think how to improve on it and have it more consistent thanks :)
I guess ergonomics of your desk height and controllers can play a part too. I was sitting lower than the height of the my desk which has the effect of "reaching for the flight stick and throttle" and made it very difficult to provide smooth inputs. Using a cushion to raise your height and or use the arm chair rests makes for a more comfortable flying position.
Definitely one of the hardest skills to master in DCS. I can land the Hornet/Tomcat on the carrier like a dime, but I still struggle with this. Well, I guess more practice is the order of the day.
Is it just me or engaging altitude autopilot for the fa18 while trying to connect to the probe makes it actually 10 times easier, the autopilot, after setting the altitude, makes the controls feel also more stiff and simple makes the plane more stable and precise feeling, if it's not the right procedure to use, I'd really want to know why cuz for me, I basically refuel like that all the time
Spudknocker, I think I recall you mentioning the grip-on-stick thing in another video...... it stuck; when it's a constant fight with the aerodynamics, it's kinda telling you that whatever you're doing ain't helping one bit. For more situations than we normally acknowledge, the magic is in "letting go"........ and in the fly-by-wire systems this is probably most accurate (mere educated guess, I'm astronomical units shy of mastering any of this...... yet).
And that's the point. First, learn how to keep constant distance behind the tanker. Second, learn how to keep constant distance behind the under-wing tank of the tanker. Then, you can learn how to do aerial refueling. Finally, learn how to refuel from tanker turning into a roll.
I have been using the Dawn Raiders mission to have a go at A/A refuelling. I have been so close, but just couldn't get the "thing in the thing". I can keep steady right behind the drogue and move up on it, but every time I push up it seems to produce some movement vertically or laterally and I miss. Once or twice I swear I hit it dead centre but it still just slipped out straight away. Thanks for the vid, I'm sure some of this advice will help.

Really great video Spudknocker. I heard someone say that we should use rudder to adjust our heading and stick to adjust the altitude during the air refueling. I don't know if it is correct.
I already gave up, almost three years flying, i know to do everything about the 18 and I just can't refuel... embarassing, stressfull :/ I don't know if is because of ansiety or my x-56 that is too tough... anyway
Well, just after this comment, i've read a few comments here about sticks and all... see ppl changing the curvature in the commands to become more sensible and for the first time, i've refuel the 18 from 8t to 17t, was amazing... still have a lot to work but was incredible. One of the biggest problems to persons like me its the pacience. If you are someone that still can't do the air refuel, take me as a example.
Could you help me with two issues, 1st: Are you also avoiding roll inputs and use rudder and pitch only when very close to the tanker? (That was advised by the f18 handbook). 2nd: Are you using the modelled turbulences (whirlwinds) or is it "impossible" to refuel with whirlwinds? Gz from Germany.
This game can be beautiful at times (like the opening shot), but is also showing its age. The clouds need reworking. After seeing FS2020, the bar has been raised.
Thanks for the vid. IMHO, it would be nice for ED to provide an 'option' that simplifies AAR. Even experienced Mil pilots have noted that the lack of 'feedback' from the jet (in a sim) creates additional challenge compared to actual AAR. Also, hardware (dead spots/drift) and software (calibration) issues also factor into the difficulty. $0.02

I record them live with Nvidia Shadowplay!
Thank you! Nicely explained :)
Really great video Spudknocker. I heard someone say that we should use rudder to adjust our heading and stick to adjust the altitude during the air refueling. I don't know if it is correct.
4:50 this dude
Great reference tough guy
This was actually pretty helpfull
george Χαριτος haha you sound surprised?
Spudknocker yeah because I tried again after the video and it worked
whats your rig, dcs looks amazing!
How do you get the cockpit and the movements for the harrier so smooth. Mine goes slow and i can lean to one side. Any way to fix?? Love your content

Hey dude if you're using track IR check out my video here! ua-cam.com/video/zrC3IC6oFoI/v-deo.html
best intro man
This game can be beautiful at times (like the opening shot), but is also showing its age. The clouds need reworking. After seeing FS2020, the bar has been raised.
Best advice: Look 'through' the basket and breath normally.
Damn... My video shoulda been 5 seconds just to say that haha
Subscribed. When do we fly together?
Ive tried requesting ATA refueling but the tanker never shows up.
Great stuff.
Thanks Dad !
I can hit the drought and stay connected for like 20 30 seconds but very unstable
u get so angry with myself doing this, problem is i cant stay calm when im flying steady and taking fuel i get all fidgity, i will try again, on pause on your raven one mission taking fuel.
I love your tips, but it feels easier said than done hahahaha. I keep tensing up when betty keeps telling me bingo fuel, then i feel like i need to hurry my ass.
When there is a mission that needs air refueling or night carrier landing,i skip that mission or i change some things in mission editor if i can
Never got clear contanct holding formation is easy for me.
DCS is meant to be fun.

What is this “wingman finder” you speak of. I am looking for some knowledgeable DCS pilots to assist me in learning
Marco, I'm looking for a wingman myself. If you would like to join up I have been flying now for about 3 months. I'm OK. I have been studing the A10C moreso than anything else although I have most of the other aircraft. I have just purchased the FA18C and would like to get more proficient with it. I have been with the FA18C now for about 2 days. I'm not a real fast learner with the book. Moreso with doing. I need the practice and would like someone perticularly better than me although, I can certainly hold my own (in most cases). So, if you are interested in joining up contact me at boseimmp@msn.com. Thanks
I should say to anyone that may read this reply. I am looking for a wingman, helper, teacher...is there anyone interested? Or does anyone know of anyone that is interested?
Baseball is 90% mental. The other half is physical. (Yogi Berra)
Thank you :)
Physics would tell us that as we take on more and more fuel we become heavier thus we would need to increase our throttle up ever so slightly to account for this .....
2:10 is that 4k it looks beautiful!
ask me how i do the air refueling with the x-box one controller....lol
Well you make it sound like yoga
Thx thow
I burned thru 6k fuel and still didnt get it :,(
This game is hard. My radar sucks and the enemy missles dont make any beeps plus my flares wont work no matter what I do. I just fly and explode.
Hey man, there is an absolute TON to learn. It’s one of the reasons why it’s hard to call DCS a game, you have to do a lot of learning before the sim makes any sense. For instance one small thing here is radar guided missiles don’t care about flares, only IR guided missiles do
@@Spudknocker I am getting very good at starting and takin off though! Lots of practice there. Im still missing some of the systems. Not sure what Im doing. Trying to learn the aim120c since I believe its the longest range missile and I want to keep distance but it isn’t working out so far. I can get them in radar at 40 mi but the range of the missile is only like 20. Ive also learned how to eject very well🤣🤣
@@Trucker-Belly the better you can get your flying skills down, the easier systems will be to learn and eventually combat
Hummmm play with myself? 🤔
what?!
lol
Yeah, put the stick thing into the basket thing untill the go juice comes out. Remember, smooth strokes on the throttle. 👌🏻
we dont love to do ar hehehe very stresy and everytime i have that god damn rage quit and after 1 hour come back lol
There's no crying in baseball...
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard ... is what makes it great."
For mé impossble...;) more difficult
If you cut out all the clichés the video would be 5 mins !
DCS: first world problems.
