4:44 True words. It's probably the most bombed spot in the universe if you count virtual worlds in. I like the new way of slewing the seeker head, especially since it's ground stabilized while you have TDC depressed. Makes if a lot easier to actually get a lock on your desired target instead of a tactical bush or something that's easily catched by the seeker by the swiveling alone that occurs in other planes.
The IR Mavericks don't see well through weather, nor even in clear day or night far. They are not used as they can't detect the targets at long range (>3-4km). The only sensor that can see far is the radar, while IR and Lasers gets seriously limited by weather. The most used Maverick is the laser variant because you get to launch it from 5-7km of the target by detecting the designator spot. DCS ranges are extremely overpowered to what they are capable. And DCS does make all vehicle glow like a Christmas tree, while terrain is almost completely dark. One reason why IR Mavericks are not used is because they tend to fly to bushes, rocks and all other targets than the one you locked and launched. If you want range, you use a GPS guided bombs by lofting them.
Hey Spuddy. That was explained much more clearly than the first MAV video you did and is really helpful. Even Matt Wagner’s Intro video really wasn’t very clear. Thanks for doing it for the new features. Dude, there’s just something I need you to understand about IR. I used to use it. It actually doesn’t see through anything. It only shows difference in temperature but with great resolution so if there is a thick cloud in the way of something there is zero chance of seeing that something. You will only see through thin, wispy cloud and that’s only because it can detect the heat of the object through that thin cloud. Also if an object is the same temperature as the ground under it and around it you will not see that object. There is a whole lot more to it but that’s it for starters.
Thank you for your videos, which are informative without confusing jargon and without irrelevant bits for each topic. Cheers and looking forward to the next one.
Excellent video dude! I just got back into DCS because of your videos and I gotta say they have been very useful. Thanks so much and keep up the great work!
Great vid again, Spud! That little airstrip cross near Kobuleti actually exists! I always thought it was placed there by ED as a generic target for tutorials.
Haha I know! I found it on google maps a few weeks ago, tried to find something about what it was used for the closest thing I could find was something referencing an abandoned Cold War airbase from the 50's.
Under the F18 training missions, there are no training for the Maverick. Am I missing something, or are the training missions listed under some other heading?
For Spudknocker and others with the X-56, which hat switch did you change your TDC slew to? I am just getting back into DCS and my TDC slew is currently set to the mini joystick on the throttle.
Thanks for making a clear understandable update! One question, I am not sure when you are referring to down button (I have an x-52), I have set my TDC Depress button to a button on the joy stick and I have the TDC button on my throttle, Do I press the depress button and the down button and let up on the depress button to get the Mav to lock?
Two things: - So if I slew the seeker head onto a good target, it will automatically lock onto it and go READY and then I can rifle it? - I'm guessing by this tutorial that an ATFLIR pod is NOT necessary to deploy the AGM-65F?
You need to first have the latest Open Beta version of DCS, the update went out today and you can load them in the mission editor or on the ground just like you would any other piece or ordinance.
Great tutorial on the Maverick, thanks Spud, really appreciate the hard work! One question (and it's not about the missile) - was that outro music track from the documentary "Top Gun - The Story Behind the Story"?

Thanks Spud, now I understand it a bit better. However, I seem to have to wait for each MAV to cooldown after every Rifle. Wouldn't they cooldown all at once on takeoff? Could be a bug I wouldn't know. Now I just hope I can actually slew them without getting the bug that prevents slewing.
My best guess would be to try switching through all the stations to trigger the cooldown for each one when you're ingressing, similar to how Spud changes the FOV of each of them prior to engaging the targets.
Great vid Spud, thanks for taking the time to explain the TDC press, I thought my axis was bust. Think I preferred the use of the TDC axis without the need to depress anything tbh. Can you tell us what mod you used for the spot labels? Much better than name-tagging every target. Cheers
I think there's an option in DCS that lets you chose the label type, set it to dot. I've been using a label mod found on the ED board, but I altered a bit. Here's the link to it: forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=203089 - but I guess just setting that option should be sufficient now, it's quite new in DCS.
If you lock up a target and are forced to turn away from the target (Sam evasion) far enough that the seeker lost sight of the target, does the missile have the gps coordinates to reacquire the target automatically when turned towards the target again or do you have to go back through the steps to designate the target again?
My doubt about cooldown or warmup like you show at end of video... I can see that clock only at first set ... after rearming, I could not see but I think that count 4 min again. Do I understand right?
Can someone please explain to me how to activate/deactivate the Autothrottle? I've now heard Spud and Wags use the term, but I can't find any documentation or Keybinds for it?
I have a question for you. How can I slave the right or the left MFD? I mean how can I change the setup and use one or the other one? I mean having the "diamond" on one screen or the other?
I pressed tdc down nothint happens, i can only slew by holding tdc depress, then then its like it searches on its own? Moves to far etc wont go where i stop it
