- Retro sound radio assembly and install. In this video, I assemble the radio and install it in the Mustang. This took a little time, and I think it went well.

That use face plate that is hard to come by is supposed to have a spring clip, kinda like a door panel clip but larger that fits through the holes in the plate behind it. Cool video.
The old school display is actually a decal. Crutchfield sells them also. There are multple differnt models made by retrosound that have different features. All of them are customizable with different knobs, faceplates, faceplate surrounds and display decals. So you can more closely match your vehicles interior. Theres also a model thats made to sit vertical( Some Tbirds i think). Also what i like most is the divorced knobs. You can mount them anywhere you want. They also make a Aux plus USB extension cable thats made to mount in place of your cigarette lighter or appropriate size hole.
They also have a speaker line as well as there own amplifiers and subwoofer enclosures. Some of there speakers are made for those hard to fit vehicles, such as a dual speaker(stereo) setup to replace the factory single speaker(mono) in the center dash. Along with kickpanel pods.
I have a console in my 68'. The foam-type face piece actually is also held in place with a couple of clips. See the oval shaped holes on the chrome door faceplate. I sourced replacement clips as part of a lower console hardware kit.
The same clips that hold the door panels on are used to hold the pad on the console. Upper piece uses 4.
Hey Barry, not too shabby, and it sounds way better than mine 😆😆 I guess I've just rather listen to raw HP coming from the CJ. It does look pretty easy too. Try changing the + & - leads and make sure it's getting a good ground.
I don’t remember how far back now, but I put a custom auto sound unit in my 65. It was basically a replica of the original radio including FM and auxiliary input along with amplifier output. It does a nice job, sounds OK, but it’s not as feature filled as this unit. I think the model of that unit was the USA 630. It did not have Bluetooth. I think that was released the year after I purchased mine. Nice job on the install, thank you for the detailed explanation
I also bought the custom auto sound which I think was a lot easier to install you didn’t have to put it together it was already ready to fit in the 67 mustang I had the logo Mustang on the face of my radio great video 👍🏻 thanks
I have a retro sound radio in my 67 vert with a dual channel speaker in the dash. It sounds great but I wish I had some rear speakers and a little bass.
looks good Barry. I too have the center console so I was nice to see how you approached mounting the radio as well as the foam outer piece. It is funny they make the 67 console and all the parts but not the 68. Rare indeed
Someone has cut off the factory holes on the metal centerpiece. That’s why they are angled. They have a round plate at the back of the cylinder with a much smaller hole. So those plastic discs are what’s holding the radio to the metal piece?
Also, CJ pony parts sells a kit that has the four clips that attach the vinyl foam piece to the metal inner piece.

As with most products nowadays, manufacturers tend to put more extensive manuals on their websites and just ship basic paper get-started pamphlets. Not sure how helpful the online manuals would be for troubleshooting, etc…
Interested to see how the unit performs over time.
3 yrs on mine so far. Works great. Only con, at least for me and my lowered truck, the knobs are a little sensitive and when i hit bumps in the road while trying to adjust something i end up going to far. But thats just my suspension and my seating position
@@roughboygarage1475 Good to know. Once I get all the mechanical stuff done on my mustang, I will look to replace the 1980's vintage stereo that is in there now
You said rear speaker didn’t sound right or as loud. Speaker wires have a positive and negative and will effect speaker sound.
I do have them wired positive and negative. thanks.
Do you think you got a bad amp inside the radio?
I usually get the bad one on the shelf.
I don't think so. I treid hooking up a house speaker, and it seemed to work fine.
I installed one in my 65 but I’m getting a speaker pop whenever I turn the radio on or turn it off. I can visually see the speakers pop. Something you recommend I could look at?

@@JoDaddysGarage I figured it out. I redid my ground wire for the radio and the pop has disappeared for now.
Can you get Sirius radio stations for it that be great if you could.
