This is by far probably one of the most underrated classic movies. At first i saw so many similarities to the Godfather, but it really is its own masterpiece. It never feels like the 3 hour long movie it is. When my kid gets older, i cant wait to watch it with them
exactly. I watch this movie maybe every other year. so powerful, the twists and turns, the small comedic relief moments all work out together. I can watch this one, Colors, Godfather, Goodfellas, and Menace II Society over and over.
Honestly, I cannot get through American Me unless I fast-forward certain parts because I honestly cannot do it. Other than that, it's such an impactful film.
the reason why the prison scenes seem so real is because, well they actually were. the story is inspired by the poems that jimmy baca, who plays one of the council members in la onda, wrote during his time in san quinten prison. and because they actually went to the san quinten prison to film, those prisoners are real prisoners (except for the actors), the crew had to sign papers saying that they are there at their own risk
Greetings from Sweden. Saw this when I was 13 years old. The community youth centre/club was gonna hold a movie night for us kids. I sat down and saw this movie...and...yea...it´s brutal. Classic.
Aside from the protoganists, so many great actors in this movie. Billy Bob Thorton from Slingblade, Ving Rhames from Pulp Fiction, Danny Trejo from Machete, Raymond Cruz from Breaking Bad, Delroy Lindo from Romeo Must Die, and others, aside from real inmates. Benjamin Bratt (Paco) dated Julia Roberts back in the day when she was one of the hottest and highest paid actresses in Hollywood.
One of the Onda members co-wrote this movie. His name is Jimmy Santiago Baca. He was a gang member in New Mexico and wrote a book about his life called, A Place To Stand. Definitely a great book. I read it when i was 15 and it was one of many things that helped saved my youth to falling to the street life on the southside of Chicago. ❤
Which guy is the ex gangster? Probably seen this movie 50 times. I have a clock allegedly made from a placard used for movie crew to access Quentin. That's how much I love this movie.
the VHS copy we used to watch back in the day had subtitles for the Spanish..it was great for learning how to talk like these guys for several days after watching it every time..
Was about to turn the TV off 10 minutes into the video but knew I had to watch your reaction to the soap mold, when you finally realize you did not disappoint. Easily my 2nd favorite movie.
I downloaded this off internet back in 2000 when i was 15 and watched it for the first time. The quality was awful back then lol but the movie is still one of my favourites ever.
The 90s had great prison movies. Feel like I haven't seen one in a while. American Me, Murder in the First, The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redemption, Sleepers, The Rock, Brokedown Palace, Life, In the Name of the Father. I'm sure there's more...
That's as much footage the studio has from the movie, but it never was released, it's some minutes less than 5 hours, according to the actors, not more. They said that in a recent interview this year. It seems it has more scenes and dialogues from one of the actresses, couldn't catch the name, probably from Cruz' step-mom/Paco's mom.
@clevelandcbi Your right that's like the main theme song for that movie. It's definitely 1 of my favorite movies. It's a true story and only took place about an hour from me in Pennsylvania. I've commented on numerous accounts to react to this movie but nobody ever does. I understand it's not a big name movie and is 40yrs old but if people gave this movie a chance they would absolutely love it
Well, did you watch the 3 hours version? Because the most commercial one it was a shorter version that the studio said 3 hours it was too long, but the director later released the 3 hours version to explain more parts of the story and there's a version which only the studio has and it's closer to 5 hours.
A true cult classic! As a true crime fan, this movie never gets old! You're right this definitely shows prison hierarchy and incarceration. Also yes that was Danny Trejo, he actually served hard time in San Quentin State Prison where this movie was filmed, he was an actor on the set, not an inmate. He has truly turned his life around and is a success story of second chances and redemption, so proud of him, love his tacos too! I hope to meet him one day! 😊 I'm trying to get my local indie theater to show this movie on the big screen since 2023 is the 30th Anniversary of this masterpiece! Love your reactions. 😊
San Quentin was really used in this movie. Film crew and staff had to sign a document to basically sign their life to the real-life prison environment.
The Pine tree (the tree that shows every 20 minutes in the movie) and the location of the police scene with all four of them are" 576 N Indiana St Los Angeles, California." Use Google Maps.
Damn! Favourite reaction youtuber always picking these AWESOME movies! btw, i think when you react to a movie like this - you should put on english subtitles. I am from Europe and there is quite a few scenes where I have a hard time understanding what they say, because of the dialect/accent. CUTIE CAPED
Definitely an underrated movie, it's not quite a masterpiece but it deserves to be mentioned more. I was lucky to have found the DVD in a bargain bin 15 years ago, I probably would have never heard about this movie if it wasn't for that
A combination of it bombing in theaters and was made by production companies owned by Disney are why the movie has been abandoned. It’s a cultural cult classic
Sir, you should watch ''American Me'' (1992) by Edward James Olmos, that movie is imo way better than this movie (which I saw probably in 1993 on video, a year before the 1992 movie). I'm not sure, but both movies feels like it was based on the same true story (although, ''American Me'' says it was Inspired by a true story and ''Blood in Blood out'' was actually based on a true story).
Well, the ethnic division and fixation on skin, it's a US thing for the most part, different countries have their own social issues in those aspects, like gangs are ethnic based in the US. If I remember well, in Colombia for example, prisons could have guerilla members divided by political ideology, if they meet there, bad things could arise. Latin American countries are diverse, effect of different migrations, but sharing a same culture, the Latin American culture, where as in the US, you just have to have 1 Latin American parent to be considered a Latino, while probably not even having the culture, again related to certain fixations and divisions. Where I live, there's no prison gangs, but there has been organized criminal groups also giving orders to the outside, nothing complex, I guess some may be still running, but in certain operations authorities managed to break them up. For the most part, Latin America has a problem of classism, but there's also the want-to-be people who watches too much US TV and also an effect of eurocentrism that Spanish and Portuguese left behind in what's now Latin America since colonial times, so they make it similar to what happens in the US in relation to division, in certain countries and social classes.
Definitely gotta watch American me next! Both films are based on the origins of LA Eme (Mexican Mafia). American Me is alot darker and more realistic feeling. The Mexican Mafia was not real happy about the movie, which was why they killed about 10 technical advisors on the movie, as well as a greenlit contract on Edward James Olmos😖😖 But a great movie tho..
LA Eme killed folks who worked for the film???? My ex lives in an area where the Eme held sway and I grew up in the neighborhood where they recruited a lot of folks on the Stateside here in San Diego, but he never told me about that and he was in "the life" a looooooong time ago. That's probably one of the things he just doesn't want to talk about but daaaaaaamn!
...lesson?...dont trust us, brothas!...lol...we some traitorous muhfuckas!...lol...we shake your hand, you turn around, and we stick you in #24...lol...Imma be honest with you, bruh, watching this movie kept me on the straight and narrow path...I didn't want to go to jail and give up my chon-chon!...lol...this movie saved many smart Hispanics who understood the message...but I had many cousins who wanted to emulate what they saw...smh...

This movie is like a 5 season Netflix series squeezed into two hours.
3 hrs lol
American Me, Mi Familia (My Family), Mi Vida Loca, Carlito's Way, Zoot Suit and even Stand & Deliver are all good Latino gangster movies to check out.
ya but most of these dont even compare to this movie. the one that really sticks out is probably american me.
And 'Hamlet 2'
187 is interesting as well. A dark realistic look into Los Angeles gangs
Honestly, I cannot get through American Me unless I fast-forward certain parts because I honestly cannot do it. Other than that, it's such an impactful film.

Maybe not the best movie for a community youth centre to screen. Are you now a solid member of society ?
I was 13 too!!! Where the he'll did the time go?? My kids are 13 and 19 lol.
Lmao glad you saw it but idk why out of all movies they thought that was appropriate 🤣
It makes perfect sense to me, SCARED STRAIGHT LOL.
"SEE KIDS, see what happens when you join a gang? Someone takes your Chon Chon!"
You swedes crack me up lmao
Órale!!! You still invited to the carne asada, milkweed. Come through!!!
A lot of people think "truce" means peace. It just means a delay in war.
I cringe in pain whenever I see Cruz get dropped on that fire hydrant 😬
Thats the only time I fast forward the scene. This 3 hour movie goes by so fast.
GIMME SOME CHON CHON! 😂🤣😂🤣😂
That part takes me out every time!!!
I crack up everytime I here that
Legendary movie. I can watch this over and over and its awesome to see ppl react to it for the first time. Great reaction 👍🏼
its impossible to pass this off. i think ive seen every reaction to this movie lol.
@@wonder777warrior6 yessir same here! Haha

This movie was Billy Bob Thornton's first acting role.
Benjamin Bratt was also in Demolition Man starring Sylvester Stallone and Sandra Bullock.

Saw this as a kid. I'm half Mexican and half white and I definitely recognized the vibe. Amazing movie and what talent! Underrated actors❤
Hell yeah girl. Miklo is a legend.
Amazing flick. Written by a real ex gangster, who's actually in the movie
Which guy is the ex gangster? Probably seen this movie 50 times. I have a clock allegedly made from a placard used for movie crew to access Quentin. That's how much I love this movie.
@@timothybrown4524 his name is Jimmy Baca. He plays one of the la Onda officers.
Greetings! I am Mexican and this movie hits me hard every time just like when i watch Boys in the hood.
I thought every Mexican was a gangster after I saw this when i was a kid😂
I love how cruz enjoyed having his back , back 😊
I've watched this move at least 50 times in my life...brings back all the memories of growing up! Glad you watched it, great reaction!
the VHS copy we used to watch back in the day had subtitles for the Spanish..it was great for learning how to talk like these guys for several days after watching it every time..
Miklos is ken, from the old street fighter movie with JCVD
Damien Chapa. Great actor.
I’m a whiteboy who drives his Mexican mother in law to Los Cinco Puntos market every week to buy Masa.
I remember seeing this in the theater, it's still one of my favorites.
One of the best gangster movies of all time 😎💯

Another good 90s film to check out is Once Were Warriors
this movie is based on the true life experiences of poet Jimmy Santiago Baca,
The 90s had great prison movies. Feel like I haven't seen one in a while.
American Me, Murder in the First, The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redemption, Sleepers, The Rock, Brokedown Palace, Life, In the Name of the Father. I'm sure there's more...
Shot Caller.
This movie is 3hrs long, but there's also a 5hrs unreleased directors cut.
there is not, not on the internet anyways
@@weswesyall2827 That's pretty much what unreleased means. Look it up, allegedly Disney owns it.
Mexicans own scarface movie😁
“Menace II Society” (1993)
The Mexican Godfather one of my favorite movies of all time!
Great video. I love watching people from other cultures react to this movie. You got a new sub. Orale Homie! ✊🏽

This was one of the best classic movies in history 💯💯💯💯💯💯 i watch it atleast 50 times already 😂
Billy Bob Thornton Before he was Famous!!
You don't recognize Biff from back to the future?
The original version of this is five and a half hours long

VATOS LOCOS
Love this movie and wish more people knew about it like scarface or goodfellas
"At Close Range" is another crime mob movie. Christopher Walken, Sean and Chris Penn are in it
I just watched Madonna's "Live To Tell" video last night. Was crazy seeing this comment.

The story was written by a prisoner that was actually in the movie
Dude who pushed the mirror is the writer and lived that life.
Didn't know it was 3 hours long cuz it never lets up from start to finish. Watched this so many times as a kid on HBO.
