It's a crime that this didn't become a buddy cop trilogy. It could have spanned the rest of the 70's and then into the 80's, I thought the same as you just before you said "please tell me a sequel of this came out or is being worked on."
It kind of 'writers its self' in many ways given the social changes in that period give plenty of material to work with and you've got room to grow the characters [with Holly growing up etc].
That's scripted too you absolute sheep. Everytime there is a camera and expect you to watch, they are at work, getting paid, to lie. Literally. That's their job. We know nothing.
As far as I'm concerned this movie is flawless. It works as a murder mystery, it works as an action film, and it works as a comedy. I honestly can't think of a single thing I didn't like about it, and that's rare for me when it comes to movies.
This and Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang make for the perfect double feature from director Shane Black. They feel like sibling films, and both are darn hysterical.
Oh man I remember checking out Kiss Kiss Bang Bang a while back (before watching The Nice Guys) and thinking "oh cool, RDJ". Shit is hysterical, the russian roulette scene had me in stitches
@@jordanmcquay9077 -There were several movies that I used to keep stored together on my shelf back when that I just really enjoyed from around that time, as different as they were. The ones I remember right now were Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, The Ice Harvest, The Matador, In Bruges, Lucky Number Slevin, Running Scared.
Def agree: this is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. Crowe and Gosling are bizarrely good together. How this movie didn't burn up the box office has baffled me since I saw it the first time.
There's no sequel, but writer/director Shane Black made a similar action/comedy buddy movie with RDJ and Val Kilmer called "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" 2005 which would be the next best thing for you. Shane Black revolutionized the buddy cop genre creating Lethal Weapon, the most successful franchise in the genre. He also wrote "The Last Boy Scout" and is writer/director of "Iron Man 3"
@@mattlawrence1932 Yes, he was Hawkins, the guy who kept bombing with all his dirty jokes. He also had bit parts in "Hunt For Red October" "Robocop 3" and "As Good As It Gets"
Yes this one surprised me too! If you like Ryan Gosling in this , you’ll Gray Man! Please check this out- it has Chris Evans playing a very different character.
SO glad yer checking this one out, I loved yer enthusiasm. Btw, when they were in the elevator going down, Gosling did this hilarious nervous eye twitch. And Angourie Rice just massively stole whatever scenes she was in 😂😂😂
This is such a fun film and Gosling and Crowe (along with the superb Angourie Rice) have such a great chemistry together. It's sad that there has not been a sequel yet (this and Dredd are movies that definitely deserve one), but at least we have this hilarious and kick ass classic that is not on people's radar nearly enough.
I love this film, when this came out in 16' I saw this in theaters 6 times, it's one of my favorites. Other good Gosling films to check out are Drive, A Place Beyond the Pines, Blade Runner 2049 and The Big Short which also stars Brad Pitt and Chrisitan Bale. Also some other hidden gems of Shane Black u should check out are The Last Boy Scout, A Long Kiss Goodnight and Kiss, Kiss, Bang Bang
1:15 The somewhat erroneously named "buddy cop" genre - they're almost never both cops, it should be called "buddy action movie" genre (48 Hours - cop and furloughed convict, Midnight Run - bounty hunter and bail skipper, Last Boy Scout - PI/ex-Secret Service agent and Football star, etc)
Kiss kiss bb is also very good. Similar vibes. But i prefer this one. And my favorite Gosling "Drive". Completely different kind. VERY stylish with few dialogues, good vibes and hart, short action. A neon fever dream.
As well as directing the two you mentioned, The Predator and Iron Man 3, Shane Black wrote Lethal Weapon and The Last Boy Scout, as well as Last Action Hero (partly) and the criminally underrated Monster Squad.
Dude this one absolutely rules. And yeah 100% move KISS KISS BANG BANG up your list - exact same vibes: unlikely duo, noir style investigations, dark comedy, super sharp dialogue. (also, not on the same level, but CRAZY STUPID LOVE is a surprisingly funny one with Ryan Gosling)
A famous elderly actor was laying on his deathbed, being interviewed by journalists. One asked him, "Is it difficult to die?" He answered, "Dying is easy. Comedy is hard."
Ever since this movie...i look for any opportunity to use the "don't say AND STUFF" line! lol. this movie is comedy gold! if you want another Ryan Gosling comedy...it's a rom/com...."Crazy, Stupid, Love" is just a refreshing change of pace from the standard rom/com!
The best explanation I've heard for why this movie works so well: Neither of them ever TRIED to be funny. They played both roles with complete sincerity, and that made the funny things they did and said 10x better.
Shane Black wrote and directed this. The other films he has like this is Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. It's very very similar. Same sense of violent humor and snappy dialog. He also wrote the Lethal Weapon movies, which are also similar. Great buddy cop movies.
The guy who did this movie also made a movie like this called “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” with Robert Downey Jr and Val Kilmer. It’s also a buddy cop comedy/detective/murder mystery type of movie. Really freakin funny as well!
They're good friends in real ife, and they were waiting for the right project to come along. It was successful, but it wasn't a runaway hit. I love the ending. Could've used a sequel.
There is no sequel, but there is Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. A movie from the same Writer / Director Shane Black. It's in the same universe and same tone. No over lapping actors, it has Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer instead, but they are spiritually the same characters. Very similar in basic motivations. You've love it almost as much as this movie.
Everybody wants a sequel, but it was a sleeper when it came out and probably wont get one. This is brilliant , enjoyed watching you. React to one of my absolute favourites ,
As others have pointed out, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is similar in tone and style to this movie, written and directed by the same guy, Shane Black. Then you have the OG Buddy Cop movies in Lethal Weapon 1,2,3 and 4, written but not directed by Shane Black, and then The Last Boyscout, once again written by Shane Black. They all share a vein of similarly quick witted and dry humor, but Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is the one that most resembles The Nice Guys. They're all very entertaining movies however and I recommend you give them a try if you haven't already.
A sequel is... unlikely, but not because of a lack of interest in the principals. I think the best we can hope for is whatever Shane decides to do next. And I will be there for it.
yo this movie is such an underrated gem. love it and love that you reacted to it. the ONLY...the only natural next reaction should be kiss kiss bang bang with robert downey jr and val kilmer. it is deff very similar to nice guys. they are usually referred to as a pair. they are not equally funny but they are both very funny in just their own unique ways.
Cool reaction. It was obvious that you were gonna love it. Everything about TNG is lovable. :D From the reenactment of the 70's ( TNG is indeed a great movie, I'll even call it a masterpiece. In any case, it's easily the best action comedy/buddy movie of the 2000's next to The Other Guys. But m... no "fucking Chet"?!? :D That's one of the best recurring jokes of the film. I use it with a friend. Fucking Chet.
Yeah, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang feels very much like a trial run for The Nice Guys, it's a similar setup; Neo-Noir Buddy Comedy with a screwup teaming up with a more serious-minded tough guy and it's also set in LA, though it was then modern day LA (mid 2000s) and the mystery is a bit more straightforward. It's still very funny with the same kind of humour you liked from The Nice Guys. 🙂
This is one of my fav reactions ever. I also went into this a couple years ago with zero expectations...hadn't even heard of it and it instantly became my new favorite. Watched it maybe 5 times in the next month. Two great movies come to mind for different reasons. The Big Short - Gosling is great but it's just an awesome movie Midnight Run - Great mid 80's buddy cop flick starring Deniro and Charles Grodin. IMO, two best buddy cop movies ever... Midnight Run and 48hrs Again, great reaction! -Peace
Def one of the better R rated action/comedies that’s been made in the last 20 years. Gosling being able to show off his comedic chops was a pleasant surprise. Shane Black has a long list of great writing credits… the Lethal Weapon franchise, The Last Boy Scout and more

I watched it when it came out in 2016 and i freaking loved it right away. I still watch it and still laugh. Too bad it flopped when it came out, but it has gotten bigger later on, so i really hope that we will get a sequal that takes place in the 80s. Ryan Gosling puts on a masterclass in this movie

Both of these guys are hilarious in real life. The promos they did for this were just as funny as the movie.
They were hilarious on The Graham Norton Show, especially Ryan dying laughing at Greg Davies' stories 😂😂😂

THAT, like this one, is sadly missing a much needed sequel. Or even a lone Val Kilmer outing with his character.
