I had someone banging on my door at 3 A.M. screaming and I had no clue what about. They wanted in my home. I called the cops and while on the phone with the cops I told the people at my door, "I am armed. If you come through my door, I will be forced to take your life. It's your choice. The cops are on the way." I told the dispatcher I had 5 kids in my home and wouldn't hesitate to shoot. Fortunately, I didn't have to, but my point is, he handled this situation entirely wrong. You have the right to defend yourself, but this ain't it.
After reading your post I totally agree with you. At first watching the video I felt bad for him seeing as he lived in a high crime rate area being scared I kinda understood why he did what he did. However after reading what you wrote I can now agree he went about it completely wrong. People do stupid things when they are scared.
@@clddebarge I agree. I was terrified. I was even more terrified for my children. However, what was even more terrifying, was opening my door to God only knew what and exposing my kids to something I couldn't protect them from. At least with the door between us, by the time they got it open I was ready. Also, if you can't act under pressure and be responsible, don't own a firearm. Not you, but people in general. ☺
@@proudmilitarybrat76 And you exchanged words with the person outside, that is key here. If he had done the same, she would have told him why she was knocking on his door. Instead he shot her, no questions asked.
@Leibniz IF. YOU. CAN'T. HANDLE. THE. PRESSURES. OF. OWNING. A. GUN. DON'T. OWN. ONE. People like him are why people go so hard against guns and I get it. I am all for weapons. Arm yourselves. Be responsible. This idiot murdered her. He wasn't in danger. If someone knocking on your door at 3 A.M. and is absolutely no threat to you (has not shown a threaten, spoken a threat), makes you so damn freaked out, you open your door and murder an unarmed person, you shouldn't have owned a firearm to begin with. There's no excuse. We're not talking about the difference in how someone reacts to a death of a loved one or car accident. This man owned a firearm and clearly shouldn't have.
@@yoloswaggins7121 I did exactly what I should have done and exactly what he should have done. Had he spoken to her, MAYBE she would be alive. Mine happened to be my methed out neighbors who had a deal go wrong and they were tied up and robbed. When they finally escaped, they came to my house. I couldn't understand them and had never met them. I live in the country on 6 acres, on a double corner lot. He lived across the highway, so I use the term neighbors loosely. ☺ I spoke to them because had it been someone I knew in trouble (example; one of my adult children or their friends, etc...) and they needed me, I wanted to answer. This guy did everything wrong. Frustrates me. She should be here.
When I was little, a man came to the door and he was bleeding really bad. He was asking for help and my nana would not let him in, told him she had babies in the house but she can call for help or can find it somewhere else. We couldn't believe she wouldn't let him in, but now being grown and hearing all these stories I understand why she did what she did. Theodore was not in fear for his life, he opened the door and shot this woman point blank. This story is awful. It's a shame you have to fear asking for help and helping people.
@Sean Nobody SHOULD open their door if they feel threatened. That guy felt threatened and afraid for his life. A person who feels afraid would call LE for help. I don't think he was afraid because if he was then he never would have opened his door. It could have been a person with a gun wanting to rob him. It could have been a woman who had been attacked. What if it had been a child who was lost? You can't just open your door to a knock and shoot the person that knocked!! 😠
@@Goldie789 who are you to say what people should do in their own house on their own property? What the fuck is calling the cops going to do when someone is already beating on your door? Let me guess, you live in California?
@@Goldie789 exactly! I’ve been thinking about buying a gun for protection since I don’t think I’d do well in a physical fight, but what stops me is that I’m MORE than sure that I’d freeze in the situation or that I’m not emotionally ready to shoot someone and potentially end their life. I’d need a lot of target practice and being comfortable to handle a weapon before then.
The moment he said he did not know there was a shell in the shotgun I knew everything he said was going to be a lie. You don't answer the door with a shotgun without knowing for a fact that it is loaded and ready to fire.
True but that doesn't necessarily mean his actions were illegal. In fact, it would have been better for him legally to emphatically affirm that the gun was loaded and that he intended to shoot. That being said, his defense would still have to hinge on whether he had a reasonable fear that his life was in danger, and that seems very doubtful to me based on the story he gave.
@@GrueTurtle Well, you can still be afraid and confront someone. In fact, if you're really afraid for your life, confronting someone might be the most reasonable thing to do. In this case though, he doesn't really say that. He contradicts himself. So I'm left to consider what I think a reasonable person would do in that situation. Given the fact that he said it was persistent, it seems to me that he had plenty of time to call the police. I think a reasonable person would have armed themselves and called the police. I can see someone opening the door and engaging if they felt that the intruder's entry was imminent, which he does kind of say, but in the absence of a police call beforehand and his own characterization of it being persistent banging and knocking, I just don't think he acted reasonably. I have little doubt that he was afraid. I know I would be if someone was aggressively banging on my door at 4:30am, but I think a reasonable person in those same circumstances would have called the police beforehand.
I had a woman knock on my door for some water for her car. I told her i cant open the door as i have a baby. She got angry, i said id call cops. She walked off and then i saw 2 men walking behind her who were hiding by the car port !!! World is terrifying
it really is terrifying, i’m glad you were safe and made the safe and right choice, always trust your gut. this case reminds me of when i was very young we were stopped in traffic in our local small town and a young man came running up to the car disheveled and wanting us to give him a ride away from whatever he was running from. it was in the middle of town, in the middle of the day. my mother knew almost everyone in town and said she had never seen him before, and thankfully the car was full so we couldn’t give him a ride even if we wanted to. never heard of him again and there was nothing reported in the news about it, or even local gossip. i think he was either looking for an escape vehicle for a drug deal gone wrong or wanted to steal our car, or worse
@darkgaga16 stuff like this isn't uncommon. I'm glad you live somewhere this isn't a thing 🥰 but it's sad you assume that the world is ALL safe and dandy
@@Cory_Springer idk but hiding around the corner , going past my front door, at a spot to jump out at me is very strange. They didn't ask at a different house. Just mine....
@@Mg3-Si2-O5-OH4 It doesnt, dude is just being stupid. You dont identify a possible threat as a civilian and disregard self-preservation by opening your door to that threat. You wait will the door is broken and the threat can not be ignored.
@f4ephilosophy691 I agree with that in the specific case in this video, because there was no actual spoken threat it was just someone banging on a door but if you actually are being threatened then no you don't wait till the last possible moment lol
While I likely would have called police myself, I also spent about 30 years in high crime, low income areas. If you truly believe someone is trying to break into your house in an area like that, a call to police for "someone might be breaking in" might mean you wait 30 minutes for police to finally show up and find your dead body. It really depends on how busy they are an if they deem your situation "urgent" or not. You may even wait longer. I once called about my neighbors fighting in the front yard when one started threatening to stab the other. They finally came after about 20 minutes. And I was in a medium sized city in the south. This guy lived on the outskirts of Detroit. However, having a gun pointed at someone when you open the door is generally enough to end the situation. Most people trying to rob you don't want to risk dying for your TV and the 30 bucks you might have in your wallet. There was absolutely no need to fire before even seeing who was on the porch. His reaction was ridiculous.
My dad, the night owl, was up late when a guy he didn't know but recognized from the neighborhood knocked on the door asking for water, saying he had walked across Tulsa. As my dad cracked open the door to hand him a glass the guy pepper-sprayed him and smashed his way inside. After being tied to a chair he was stabbed in the head with a hunting knife and left to bleed to death. Eventually he slipped the bindings, dragged himself to the phone, dialed 911 before passing out from blood loss. He survived but the invader was never caught.
That reminds me of the time I was sleeping and woke up to banging coming from my attic. I got my ladder to reach the attic opening. After I crawled around for a bit I heard it again coming from the other side of the attic. When I got to where the noise was coming I noticed there was an alligator. The gator jumped on its back two legs proceeded to stab my right arm with a katana. It then belly flopped out of the attic used my restroom and left me in the attic to bleed out. Luckily my goat Anthony heard my cries from the farm and called 911 for me but the gator was never caught.
He was probably scared shitless about possibly being charged for murder/manslaughter. He shouldn't have lied about that. I don't think he went to sleep that night planning on murdering some random concussed chick.
@Bob Sacamano no, he's just been waiting for an opportunity to shoot an intruder. She was knocking on his door. Not brsking into his fucming house. Dont make excuses for this disgusting human
That’s what I said, it requires several pounds of pull on the trigger to fire a gun, they don’t go off unless that’s your intention. If they had hair-triggers there would be repeated accidental shootings and gun companies don’t like being sued. It’s bad for business.
In case people aren't aware, it's EXTREMELY unlikely for any modern firearm to just "go off" without the person handling it performing some sort of action to it. Modern guns are required to have several safety systems internally and externally which makes true "accidental discharges" extremely rare. Almost every gun accident has negligence behind it.
In case people aren't aware, it's EXTREMELY unlikely to get shot in the face if your government doesn't arm psycho civilians. Which is your average poverty-stricken, permanently aggressive, coward yanck now, isn't it? Genius.

This reminds me of the case with the Japanese exchange student where the homeowner completely overreacted and came out guns blazing and shot him as they were walking away from the property. Smh, what kind of response is that to someone knocking on your door?! These people are insane and never should have been allowed to own guns! I'm glad the court system saw through his guy's BS and left him in jail to rot WHERE HE BELONGS!!

I have handled my gone for a long time. I have gone through multiple training courses and I have gone shooting. However, if something were to have been similar to this, if there was a consistent banging or commotion at 4 o’clock in the morning, and I felt like my family in my life was in danger, my nerves will be all shot. You can train with a gun and handle a gun for however long you are, but that’s just like comparing it to a car. You can study all you want on how to drive correctly in the snow, but even if everything is in your control and you maneuver exactly like how you were taught in school things still happen. Americans. There is something deeply wrong with Americans. They are pumped full of hatred and fear from birth and you end up with the toxic school shooting constantly at war society that brings so much suffering to the world. Personally, I don't think they feel human empathy like other humans. EVERY developed nation has free at-source healthcare for all apart from America. so if you think about that this means they are the only humans on earth willing to let their neighbours die because they cannot afford simple healthcare costs, despite being easily wealthy enough to help each other. The just don't feel human emotions the same as other humans.
My thing here is… if this person was screaming for help for several minutes while banging on the door and windows… have we ever heard of a burglary case where someone does that??? Also, I’m sure he could tell by the scream that it was a female… and also I’m sure she wasn’t screaming “I’m gonna kill you!!!” She was probably screaming “help” or maybe just screams of fear and pain. I can’t imagine in any case that this woman sounded like she was there to hurt him or break in. I know we can’t know for sure, but y’all feel me on this?
Oh please, she could have killed someone drunk driving. Dozens of people are killed, even murdered, in Detroit every week and no one cares. The only reason people cared in this case was because it was a white man shooting a black woman.
@@TheNuckinFoob I live with a bunch of heavily armed guys in a barracks, if I’m lucky. Otherwise I get sent to places where for some strange reason people shoot at me, but I know how to handle weapons safely so if for some careless stupid reason an automatic weapon does accidentally discharge (and in 18 years never has) the weapon is always carried muzzle facing the ground. Alway identify your target and access the threat before you discharge your firearm . This prevents you from blowing away a friendly. The military tends to get upset if you blow away an innocent. I don’t know if you consider Bosnia, Afghanistan, Haiti, central Africa, Iraq friendly neighborhoods but they did try to kill us with artillery, mortars, high powered rifles, grenades , automatic rifles and shotguns etc.., but I never discharged my weapon without knowing what I was shooting at.
@Basado Americano right? This dude did the world a favor and gets locked up? It's so wrong!!! And I know they only charged him because she was black! So, a coroner can determiner the injuries to her hands as relatable to a car accident. A toxicologist can determine her blood-alcohol level and whether she was drunk or not, but who exactly determined that she had a concussion when her head was destroyed - completely? Her head wasn't "damaged" as you worded it, it was shattered - nothing left above her jawline, so how did somebody determine that she had a concussion? Also, there was only ONE other witness; the shooter who could have verified her story of "seeking help" and NOWHERE in that deposition/interrogation did he say she was looking for help or any of the other details in this account. So AGAIN, WHO gave the account of the events from the accident to the fatal shooting?
There have been plenty of situations of someone banging on a door in the middle of the night screaming for help and haven't had a shot gun blast to the head. They probably peeked out the blinds to see who was out there before they opened the door. Not swing the door open with guns blazing. Despite the fact that she was drunk driving and crashed her car, she was looking for HELP. Period. Like so many people in a scary situation do. That was no reason for her to be shot dead. He was afraid.....okayyyyy. My fear would tell me to keep that door closed and call police. He was just trigger happy and he knew very well that gun had a bullet in it 😐
Right! Definitely should've called for cops first and then maybe stood at the door with his gun near by JUST IN CASE, while telling the person outside "I called the cops, I'm not sure what is going on, if you need help or what". It pisses me off that he didn't try to talk to her through the door, ask what was going on etc. No way that gun should've gun off until someone broke in and was actively trying to attack you.
This isn’t that hard of an occurrence to comprehend. You can probably find a lot of cases that are similar. Everyone can say “I would’ve done this or that...” but until you’re in the actual situation you don’t know how you’re going to react. There were mistakes by both parties, it’s sad.
There are also people who send a lone person, typically a woman, who will say she is injured. And then when the homeowner opens the door, a group of people will rush in. I've seen it on ring doorbell camera videos. Sometimes we see the people get in, and sometimes we see the "injured" woman walk away with a bunch of dudes after the homeowner offers to call the police for them. I will never open my door to a stranger in this situation but I will immediately call 911 and watch them incase they do get attacked by someone.
Wut??? No that is entirely wrong. Maybe to do it like this guy did, but I'd argue that the purpose of a firearm is to take life and aiming for the head is the best way to insure that with minimal suffering... a true psychopath wouldn't be trying to end it in one shot. Clearly you know nothing about gun use 🤦♂️ Never pull a firearm if you don't have the intention of using it. Period. Full fucking stop.
Why if you are genuinely scared you wanna make sure they ain't getting back up this however is just wrong the door was knocked no one braking in and he confronted the danger self efence is not this people should actually learn what is self defence this is an obvious case and he should be guilty

My guy wanted to know how it felt to shoot someone and took the first chance he got. If I shot someone accidentally, and then learned that they were just asking for help, I would be absolutely devastated. He however just cares for his own ass.
My mom crashed her car once on a country road before cell phone service was common. There was no way to ask for help and she was 5 miles from home. She tried knocking on the nearest house but they pulled a gun on her snd told her to leave or they'll shoot. She is a little asian lady asking for help at 2am. Some people are just jerks. Even if you are scared of it being a trap, atleast have the decency to phone the police. She had to walk home in South Georgia in the dark. There are animals and it's dangerous. T
I think the days of knocking on strangers doors in the middle of the night for help are gone... it's not the 1950s anymore. Everyone has a cell phone. Failing that, flag someone down and ask them to call the police for you. Some asking for help in the middle of the night might be a killer, and someone you ask for help in the middle of the night might accidentally kill you out of fear. Tough world :/
It is not objectively normal to hear people banging on your house in the wee early hours of the night. There have been many cases presented in court of assailants pretending to be in distress in order to elicit a response from a homeowner more homogeneous towards the assailant being given access to, or 'protection' within the target's home, before committing their assault against said homeowner. This is a fact that needs to be taken into consideration when measuring the capabilities and cunningness of criminals and organized crime seeking to exploit the natural compassion and helpfulness of others.

He moved to the country thinkn he left the trouble behind him.. all of a sudden theres a 25 year old 5' chick banging down his door in the wee hours of the morning! That was about 15 years ago. I do not know this mans name. I wish i did. I got really lucky and id like to thank him., Again.
No excuse on his part. If your that scared don't open the door. . Its clearly obvious she was injured and disoriented, only threat she posed was passing out bleeding on his front porch. How sad to crawl from a mangled car to only be shot in the face by a clearly "frightened" man. My arse! He deserves every single year he got. That wasn't castle doctrine or stand your ground it was a angry man just itching to shoot someone. Streets are much safer with him off them.
Clearly obvious to us, I wouldn’t say that was clearly obvious to him at all. Still, he should have stayed inside and waited for then to break in before shooting if that’s the situation he thought he was in.
Yeah, makes perfect sense for someone with murderous intent to sit at home and pray someone bangs on their door at 430. Do you even hear yourself? What about this dumb broad endangering the lives of innocents with her indulgent, reckless lifestyle? She could have just as easily hit an occupied car in her idiotic drunken rage. Everything you state is wrong. This happened 3 hours AFTER she crashed....she was drunk and still high off her rocker. She wasn't banging on the door for help...she was just banging on windows, doors, and making any sane person think he's about to be robbed/killed. This guy didn't do a damn thing wrong.
I've had very little training on guns and even I know one of the most important rules is assume every gun is loaded. Another is never point your gun at someone you don't intend to shoot. He obviously opened that door intending to kill whomever was on the other side & he damn well knew that gun was loaded. At least have the guts to admit it instead of lying and saying you didn't know it was loaded and it went off by itself.
Right? If you really thought it wasn't loaded and STILL pointed it at someone and it "accidentally went off" or something, then you're an idiot who is a danger to yourself and obviously others and should be in prison.
Which is messed up too because if he was under attack and he called the police, he'd be dead long before they arrived. Look how long it took them to respond to the accident she caused.
He opened the door for his intruder, and did she even step inside his home before he shot her? Pretty sure an intruder has to intrude first. Plus like he mentioned you have the right to protect your home with equal or less force. Shotgun vs No Weapon speaks for itself. And no warning to shoot?? I was pretty sure you need to give them the opportunity to flea. Then the obvious, can't shoot if they are leaving.
Owning a gun is a big responsibility! You can’t just kill someone and say “oh, I didn’t know it was loaded.” If you can’t keep track if a gun is loaded or not you shouldn’t own one.

Crazy! This guy lives in the wrong state. Bottom line up front, a rando was banging on the door at the wrong time. The fact that he was amped up because he lives in the ghetto had something to do with it. Thank goodness I live where a person can protect themselves and NOT give more rights to the defendant.
Why would you open and shoot. It would be one thing if he said go away or I’ll shoot, and then you just need to leave, but to have no warning at all? What is that about.
Crossed arms can also mean that the person is cold, or self soothing in a stressful situation - as well as a defensive posture or a barrier against a person or a situation. A sad story all around.
The worse kind of a human is the one that betrays someone at their most vulnerable and desperate times. He could’ve easily helped her but he decided to take her life. May he rot in hell.
The guy didn't know though, he lived in a rough area where home invasions and violent crimes were part of every day life. Being woken up at 3am by someone banging at the door under those circumstances would be enough to put a lot of people on high alert and paranoid.
At this point by now if people don't understand they need to ask for an attorney then they damn near deserve to go to prison regardless just for being that ignorant
Let me get this straight, He lived in a rough neighborhood where violet crimes and home invasions were extremely common. Probably went to bed with the knowledge of somebody driving around the neighborhood erratically and smashing into cars. Gets woken up at 3AM by someone banging his windows/doors and screaming, he tries to see what's going on from the window but is unable too. He's clearly petrified, paranoid and fears the worse (purely because of the environment he lives in and not because of his own actions) opens the front door and is on high alert, obviously the first sign of erratic behavior would be enough for the already heightened senses of the shooter to snap and the trigger to be pulled. This story is tragic, losing your life in a period where all you want is help is horrible. That being said, the guy who isn't a monster, his approach was the product of his environment and he was clearly trying to protect himself/his home. The females decision to drink/drive sadly resulted in her death, it was her game and unfortunately the man who pulled the trigger got dragged into it. When I was 18 years old, I still lived with my mother and I had had problems with PTSD, depression and anxiety. I would go out on the bike for awhile at night to relax (looking back that was not wise at all even though it was 1980) and one night about a mile from home, this little dog got fixated on chasing me and trying to get close enough to nip at my ankles. I felt like I couldn't get away from the dog even though it was so small it made me nervous, lol, and I managed to kind of take refuge in this person's driveway. I was very naive at that age, wasn't thinking of danger 🤥 I could not seem to leave without that blasted dog ready to come right back. Someone across the street must have alerted the people because this man eventually came out and asked what I was doing, he said they were in the middle of some legal issue with some person or people, and that I was lucky, that normally he would shoot first and ask questions later! I was able to call my mother's boyfriend who lived right down the road and he reluctantly came and helped me get back home. (It was around 3 am). I guess it wasn't "my time."

Guns have fail-safes to prevent hair trigger pulls especially shotguns. The weight needed to pull back a trigger is more than just touching it. (Unless illegally modified) Factually, forensic evidence proved the gun was 1. Raised 2. Aimed 3. Discharged. You cannot shoot someone in the head for simply knocking on your door.

@alukuhito Same can be said to the drunk girl pounding at a door that early in the morning after leaving the scene of an accident. She could have killed someone as well, this guy was defending his home.
I had someone banging on my door at 3 A.M. screaming and I had no clue what about. They wanted in my home. The moment he said he did not know there was a shell in the shotgun I knew everything he said was going to be a lie. You don't answer the door with a shotgun without knowing for a fact that it is loaded and ready to fire.
This.
@@moeknows5418 He also instigated the engagement. he chose to go confront the person, meaning he wasn't afraid or being defensive

If he was so scared why open the door? Why not just call the cops. His story makes no sense, R.I.P Renisha
Totally. He should have hidden under the bed and waited to see if they broke in.

In case people aren't aware, it's EXTREMELY unlikely for any modern firearm to just "go off" without the person handling it performing some sort of action to it. I can’t imagine in any case that this woman sounded like she was there to hurt him or break in. I know we can’t know for sure, but y’all feel me on this?
I live in Detroit, I remember when this happened. It was awful
Oh please, she could have killed someone drunk driving. Dozens of people are killed, even murdered, in Detroit every week and no one cares. The only reason people cared in this case was because it was a white man shooting a black woman.

Yeah, poor guy was just scared. This isn't a crime.

It's only her mistake because she was drunk driving and knocked on the wrong door for help. That's it. She didn't deserve to die because of it.
Bingo
I agree
from experience if someone is banging on your door, they are not trying to break in. real break in are so quiet you neve hear them.

That's not necessarily true
It takes a special kind of psychopath to aim a shotgun at someone's head from close range.

No that is entirely wrong. Maybe to do it like this guy did, but I'd argue that the purpose of a firearm is to take life and aiming for the head is the best way to insure that with minimal suffering... a true psychopath wouldn't be trying to end it in one shot. Clearly you know nothing about gun use 🤦♂️
Never pull a firearm if you don't have the intention of using it. Period. Full fucking stop.
Close range is the only time you use a shotgun. But yeah it should never be pointed at someone's head.

My guy wanted to know how it felt to shoot someone and took the first chance he got. If I shot someone accidentally, and then learned that they were just asking for help, I would be absolutely devastated. He however just cares for his own ass.

Yes he couldn't wait for the opportunity to shoot and kill someone expecially a black one thinking he'd never be charged stupid trailer park redneck

As someone not from America, it’s absolutely insane people’s first thought is to get their gun out
It is not objectively normal to hear people banging on your house in the wee early hours of the night.

If he was genuinely scared for his life, he wouldn’t have opened the door in the first place smfh.
This is definitely not the most twisted case I've ever seen.
Both are victims that stemmed from the females original actions. I really feel sorry for the man, I don't think he should be made to serve a day in prison.
Hah'. That's a take for sure.

I feel that bringing race into this is wrong.
But other than that, I agree. The sentence was harsh and unjust.
