Fantastic video with so many helpful hints. I love that you demystify something that has so many different types and aspects with practical suggestions and uses. Thanks so much! Hugs, Kristina
Great job with the basics of paper Amy. You hit on all the different papers and how to use them. I loved that you pointed out that the smaller paper packs the images/print is smaller than the 12 x 12's paper. I have really enjoyed these tutorials from you and Jane!
Brenda Lawrence Thanks Brenda, I am really enjoying making them. I have learned a lot too, I tend to research a lot for each video and wow! There are some very knowledgeable folks out there.
I love taking plain vellum paper and printing black and white pictures and using them to put in frames. They come out really neat... I never knew about the weight of paper... I learn something new every week lol.. :-)
mildred verheijden Aww, thanks Mildred. I really want to love on your dog in the photo next to your name. We have a lab and I adore him! His name is Amos, what is your dogs name?
My golden retriever 's name is Toby! And he is such a sweet dog!!! And we have a little one, not a breed, and her name is saartje (it is a dutch name) Labs and golden are a little bit the same aren't they? Big sweet dogs!! I like your dogs name!!!! I will try to show them on one of my video's!! xx
Wow..you cleared up so many misconceptions I had on paper! Thanks to you I won't be wasting my money on paper that will just lay around. Your videos are so informative...love,love,love them!!!
Thank you so very much!!!!! This was informative and so helpful. I bought polka dot vellum paper. I wanted to apply the paper either over my card or as a background. However, now I can't utilize glue. Any suggestions? I'm going to design Christmas cards...again thank you for your site as I have subscribed. Liz
Most of the time people will just wrap the vellum and adhere it inside of the card. Check out Kristina Werners channel, she has some tips for vellum I think. If not she uses it a good but and it might help you out.
I love this video too...but I have another question regarding chipboard..What is the best to use for the big shot? A friend suggested cereal boxes ..but I worry about messing up my dies.. Thank you in advance.
kandi neff I want to be sure to say that I am not a chipboard expert, I would think the wafer dies wouldn't work well for chipboard but those steel rule ones, like the Tim Holtz or Sizzix, I wouldn't be afraid to use those. I am just guessing, any of you other crafter's have any suggestions?
Loved this video! What adhesive do you prefer for vellum? I love the look, but steer clear of it because I'm not happy with any adhesive that I've tried when I don't want to attach it with a brad or something like that.
Kim Schultz Honestly, I have not had one that I love, mostly I try to get sneaky with the way I hide the adhesive. Either wrap the adhesive all the way around and hide it under a mat or use an embellishment to hide it.
Amy, my question is...the 8.5x11" paper pad you showed on here...is it light weight like paper? I ask because I have only been able to find it in that weight. Thanks for a great tut. xoxo
I know this is an older video as are some of the others I've been watching lately. I love your tutorials and your information and your q and A's. but I have a question for you do you still get your value mat packs that you were getting at Hobby Lobby from there or somewhere else , or can you still find them anywhere?
I went looking yesterday and I was told they don't carry it anymore either and they tried to sell me really big sheets that were expensive. If you hear of or find any place could you please let us know? I'm going to check on eBay and Amazon later this evening. What do you use instead? And thank you for getting back to me so quickly I really appreciate it
Its been a quick trip. I'll be posting in a day or so on FB about why I came to FL. Heading home in the morning. Hope to make Bham tomorrow before I stop
I am so glad you did this I have watched so many videos and they are doing projects and I have no clue what paper or card stock they are using and I make the item and it seems more or sometimes less sturdy. LOL TP you should do a vid on all the uses of TP hahaha JK !! :)
effie924 omg! There are so many uses of TP, I have seen some crafter's make amazing things from it. Good idea, I know you were joking but you never know what you may spark!!!
Thanks for these series of videos, very informative and instructional. You save a lot of money in buy tools, papers and other stuff for beginners card makers. Thank you so much.
Great basics video, Amy! I should start to pay attention to the weight, I usually buy paper because I like the look of it. I do have heavier cardstock I bought for cards. My favourite pads are the ones that are double sided, I feel ripped off if there is a white back, but they do work best if there is no folding, etc. Thanks for this! Debbie :)
Dewdrop Gables I agree I too feel ripped if I get one sided paper, but I do like to use them for cards because I get the print on the outside and the blank on this inside for a sentiment. Thanks Debbie!
Great video!!! Just one question please, If I'm going to the store to buy a chipboard how do I know what the weight is? Where would the weight size be located at on the box because I am looking for medium to heavy weight? Thank you!!!
Juanita Groves I do not think you will be able to find it on chipboard "items" you know like letters or boxes etc. If you buy it in a pack of flat sheets it will sometimes say on the package. Also, if you know the manufacturer you are purchasing you can sometimes Google the info. Sorry I didn't have a definite answer!
Juanita Groves Hope Amy doesn't mind me butting in but I think I can help a little. I buy Grafix medium weight chipboard ( www.joann.com/grafix-12inx12in-medium-weight-chipboard-sheets-25pk-natural/2082303.html) it is .057 in weight, I wish they would just say it's 1/16", 1/8" thick etc. But they measure it this way so you can use the .057 as a gauge when shopping. Joanns does not have it in stores so wait for free shipping if you decide to order as chipboard is heavy to ship. The .057 is a nice sturdy weight. It will bend but you have to work at it. If I need something heavier I just use 2 layers. I hope this helps.
So informative Amy, thanks. I have changed my name from Aurora-Delphyne, just thought i'd let you know in case you were wondering who this was lol xx Wendy
I didn't even think about the weight of paper. I just go with what I like. This was very informative. There is so much to know about crafting, besides get some paper and embellishments and go for it. lol That is what I did. Got to this video late so I have to let you know my book came in and I just love it! When are we going to start the Halloween stuff? So much to learn!!! TFS...Bobbie
Very helpful! Do they make a cardstock that is colored on one side and white on the other side. I would like to have a cardstock like that as I like to write and stamp sentiments inside on white.
Great info Amy, I remember watching you make all of those items, and Jane making the little journal. Of course I watch all the videos you two girls have done. Love the series you girls are doing. xxoo
I have never seen colored printer paper. I have and know there is colored card stock, but I have never seen basic printer paper colored. Is that sold in all stores?
mollytigger I get mine from Walmart, mostly because I just don't use it much. We have to purchase it every year for our kids classrooms, I usually just grab a couple of extra packs for me then. Thanks so much!
Thank you for another awesome video Maymay. I love your accent too. My question is this, I just got my Big Shot Plus delivered as I am new to card making and trying to buy all the materials, supplies and tools to help me in my new hobby. I didn't order any accessories for my Big Shot+ but do you think I need any of the accessories? Take that back I did buy a die brush w/foam pad to remove paper from intricate dies. I used my Big Shot on embossing folders and came out very nicely and bought several dies and they work nicely. Do I need the magnetic platform, crease pad, precision plate, and or shims. I watch a lot of UA-cam and one lady was having a heck of a time with her intricate dies. She was putting shims and pads and she also looked like she was struggling to wind the handle to run the base/project through her machine ( can't be good for the machine) any problems you came across. Or any ideas of what to invest in and what items are a must. I have a lot know. Went and bought the basic. Scoreboard, trimmer, inks in pigments and dye, watercolors with paper, and I'm starting my inventory of paper (the scrapbook paper) and was wondering what weight of base do you use for your cards? I know it depends upon the project and who it may be going to. It's probably safe to have all weights in many colors and designs. I have 110 lbs paper and it's really thick. Is that what I use for the base? I was using it for my actual project then adhering to a card base that I bought already made with envelopes Any suggestions and ideas are Much appreciated. Thanks again.
I think for the Big Shot, it depends on what you will be doing with it. I pretty much just use the magnetic platform and cutting plates for die cutting. I never have to use shims. For embossing, it depends on the embossing folder. Some I can use on the magnetic plate but for others, I need to use the the tabbed platform. For cardmaking, I only use the 110lb card stock for 5x7 cards. I use Recollections 65lb or Stampin Up 80lb for A4 cards.
Is anyone else having a problem finding 110 lb white cardstock? I just used my last sheet and went online to get more and cant find any at joanns. went to AC moore last sunday and none there either... so weird!!!!
Charlotte Litherland Michaels, Joann's, and Hobby Lobby here in San Diego have tons of card stock to choose from. Check out your local big box stores and also you can google search speciality paper craft stores in your area. You'd be surprised what you have in your area. Hope that helps.
Great video! I didn't realize there was so many differences in the papers. I was just buying what I thought was pretty. For the base, I bought a solid white, black, and kraft. I just checked, all mine is 65lb. I've got one pad by Colorbok that does not have the weight listed. It feels like the rest of my paper. So as long as I plan on layering my cards, the 65lb weight will be okay to use. Is that correct? I love the way your cards look with all the matting. That's how I have been doing my "trial and error cards. I guess, if I ever decide to do just a stamped card, I should use 80 or 100lb base. Thanks for a great class. Hugs and prayers, Neasie
DeNease Moore when I do a one layer card I like to use a stronger base. The 65lb can be a little flimsy. It is really just a feel thing anyway, what ever you want your finished project to be. Glad this could help, don't feel locked in to a specific weight though, I use lots of different weights on my projects. Thanks for watching me!!!
I really appreciate these classes as I learn to be a better crafter.
I just wanted to say again how much I am enjoying the series you and Jane are doing. You all are doing a wonderful job, thank you.
