I do love your videos. You make it so easy to follow and no matter how many cards and crafts I have made, I always learn something new. So, I checked out the mail templates because I do a lot of mailing and like everyone else have had the humiliation upon occasion of having something delivered postage due; *sigh* I really did not want to spend 8 bucks, plus shipping, so here's what I did: I copied and pasted from the USPS site the domestic mailing guide, and printed it on 11x17 paper. Then I spray glued it to a presentation board (using only the center part), taped two laminated rulers to form a 90 degree angle at the bottom to measure height and width. Then I cut a 1/4 inch slit on the side. Voila!
I make and mail many many cards throughout the year. The majority of what I mail is Non Machinable. I buy the stamps in bulk yes they are costly but I can't do the clean and simple. I like all the embellishments that are offered in the market place. I live really close to the post office and am up there weekly to check weight and size etc. This is a act of kindness and a way to pay it forward so I budget every month for this crazy hobby. It gives me pleasure and being retired offers me time for this crafty life! Great video and for the newbie to know about size weight and cost to mail.

Love your series. Yes, use the bases. Loved the info about the post office. My PO guy wanted to charge me extra because I used yardstick for the envelope. He said, as you did, that it was considered, "rigid." He did relent, but now I know that I will have to pay more if I use cardstock for the envelope.

Oh. And while sometimes I do make my own envelopes, I usually do also pick them up in assorted colors and sizes when they are on sale. But, my new favorite is that I splurged and bought a box of matching Neenah solar white A2 envelopes so now my plain envelopes match my stock card basics. Now I jjust decorate the plain envelope to coordinate with the card. Can also be done Mohawk card stocks, and probably other brands too. My other favorite is to buy the 100 pack of Strathmore watercolor cards with matching envelopes when they are on sale.

Just found your website and watched this video on sizes of envelopes. Very informative and helpful. I usually make A2 cards, but glad you gave the size for notecards, as I want to give several sets of notecards for presents. Looking forward to new videos in this series.
Embellishments get you. If I put anything special in my cards I take it to the post office. I sent my father in law an Easter card and he had to go pay an additional charge to get the card, lol. Learned my lesson. It was funny because until I told him it was from us he wasn't going to go get it. He is 83 and it was so cute!!!

I am not very creative in stamping and die cutting greeting cards, but I like watercolor painting a lot, and I though I can corporate them in greeting cards, not everyone can buy large paintings. and you were right I watched a lot of greeting cards video and everyone is using A2 cards and I felt lost, for me they are to small for my miniature paintings. I am going to make some A9 cards with a lot of confidence now LOL. Thanks again for sharing all your knowledge and talent with us.
Ohh yes and 6x6. I love the bigger one to make more impressive cards. Please use those bases love that idea of working with what you have. The postal board is awesome didn't know that was out there so I am ordering it from stamps.com today, it will explain a lot. Thanks very goos video
I prefer the A2 size cards, because they are more cost effective for me to make. I also prefer to make all my own envelopes and envelope glue for the same reason. I prefer to save crafting money to buy more stamps, ink, etc...things I can't make myself. Thanks for your hint, I am going to make myself a "postal slot" cause I tend to add dimensionals to a lot of cards and usually end up putting them in padded envelopes which cost a lot more to mail. LOVE all your videos and hints, but sure missed the Crafter After today.
I started cardmaking with Anna Griffin quite some time ago. That set my love for 5"X7" in place. I had large embellments that worked better for larger cards. My cardstock collection seems to have grown into 12"X12", so I use whatever size I feel appropriate for the reason for the card. As far as adding beads or items that change the texture of the card, I use the very thin packing foam cut to the card size. This tends to even out the envelope without adding weight or thickness, and also protects embellishments. By all means, I would love to see cards using all the sizes of cards.

I love you and all of your information and helpful tips/careful research. I just wanted to mention that I have commonly had my A2 sized cards that are thicker than 1/4 inch be processed as "packages". Instead of paying an additional twenty-something cents, I have had to accept the fact that my dimensional cards, although being A2 size and only an ounce or two will cost me a dollar twenty something or more because of 3/8 to 1/2 inch thickness. ALSO- be aware that 6"x6" cards ALWAYS cost extra postage.

My favorites are the A2 and the 3 x 3 cards. Also I make an odd 3 1/8 x 6 1/8 cards a lot, cause those fit in the standard small bill size regular envelopes. I make a lot of those, in fact I made a bunch of Christmas cards last year using those envelopes and it was great, I didn't have to spend more for mailing.
Thank you Maymay, that is so helpful. It helps to explain why we pay so much in postage for items purchased from the USA. I live in the UK and we can pay customs and duty on anything over £15 which includes the cost of postage. I use A4 as our standard paper size, sorry don't know the measurements. I like to make bigger cards so would typically fold an A piece of paper in half or use either 6x6 or 8x8 which is a popular size card. We too have a postal formula in very much the same way you do so that we can check to ensure that envelopes are neither too big or wide. I'm guessing that this was standardized throughout the world. Thank you for all the research for this video. Wonderful! Here's my take on this: I prefer larger cards as I think they are easier to design. I usually cut my 8-1/2 x 11" cardstock in half and wind up with 2 pieces that are hinged together. Plus, this makes them stand up wonderfully! Also, I make lots of envelopes as my cards have many layers to them & need a "boxelope" to put them in. lol I use both my ScorPal and my envelope punch board to make them. I prefer the ScorPal as the score tool is perfectly designed NOT to cut my paper, no matter how thin it is. I had the MS board but got rid of it due to too many wrecked papers from their score tool and my stylus did not fit into the grooves well at all. I guess we all just get used to what we have or started with from the beginning. Thank you for all the hard work you put into your blog & videos. And thank you to your sidekick also, Mr. Vittles. 😁😁

I typically make A2 card size because of the efficiency of the card base. I do try to limit the dimensional elements on my Christmas cards because of the mailing issues. Cards to be delivered in person or sent in a priority box are the most fun because I am able to embellish as desired. Thank you for the excellent tutorials. Wishing you a super week. Hugs Susan
This is brilliant! It will definitely go into my favorites to refer to often. I usually make 5x7 cards. I purchase the blank cards and envelope sets when they are on sale and keep a big stash of them. I use a lot of Anna Griffin products, and her things are geared for mostly 5x7. Also, when doing card fronts, I can get four 5x7 panels from a 12x12 piece of paper. I have occasionally made a 5x5 card and popped it into a 5x7 envelope, but haven't dabbled much in other card sizes. A lot of my bulky cards go to people at church, so they are hand delivered. Thanks for this wonderful lesson! I would love to see what you do with all the sizes you showed.
All those bases you made, I would love to see you (interesting challenge here,) make the same card design (or similar since size might dictate,) on all of them, to see how they come out/look. That was the first thing that popped into my head and sounded so interesting. =) The challenge being, a design you could adapt to each of the sizes and how to make that happen. This was super informative!!! When I started doing my own cards, I only did the 8.5x11 folded because I did everything in my Hallmark card studio software and it was set at default size so I did no cutting. Once I got into actual card making, I would use the premade bases sold in boxes with the matching envelope. Now I try to make my own bases as I learn more skills! This video helped a lot, TFS!!!!☺️😊

Thank you about postage. So many rules. I made 6x6 cards without knowing that extra postage was required and paid when they were all returned. I now make 6x6 cards and mail them in rectangle envelopes. I like to make both A2 and A7 cards. I am enjoy making center step cards - small and large size - that I cut with dies.

I wish way back when I started I'd have seen this video...it would have helped me understand so much. I used a computer program to make cards and in the beginning all I knew were half fold and quarter fold cards. ;0) I think my favorite is the A2 not only because you can get 2 cards out of every piece of 8 1/2 x 11 card stock but because you can also make the envelope out of an 8 1/2 x 11 piece as well. I live in a town where if you can't get supplies at Wal-Mart or Dollar Tree (and lately my Dollar Tree hasn't been so good) you have to order it on-line...so 8 1/2 x 11 paper works best for me. ;0)

I have sent a2 cards with some bumpy embellishments that were still light, and thin enough to go through the slot. I slid a 4.25x5.5 piece of cardstock in front of the card. Those mailed just fine. I wrote this on the last video, but I am an A2 card maker. I donate a lot of cards. I make over 500 cards a year. I need low waste. I try to donate at least 300 cards to the USO each year. Larger cards means more space to fill on the i sides. The Fond Noel stamp set makes awesome quick one layer cards! I received my set last week. Life got a little crazy so I have only made 4 cards with it so far. I am going to try to make 40 cards with it this week.

I have been an Anna Griffin follower for many years also and make 5x7 Cards and 6x6 sometimes. One thing I noticed when you showed that device from WeRMemoryKeepers, I didn't notice the ability to make an "Envelope Box" that the Original one has (you know it puts a 1/4" side all around your envelope). I will make one out of coordinating AGriffin CS for the Real BIG cards! lol! Just something I think the newbies would like to know about! Great job on your video May May! 😊
6x6 cards are also nonmachinable and cost the extra 21 cents. You can purchase 70 cent stamps for nonmachinable cards (49 + 21 cents) just ask your post office to order them if they don't have them in stock. Good job Mayday on explaining! I work for USPS and couldn't have done better!

My main card size is an A2, but I also like to make square ones once in a while, 5x7's and I love the business sized envelope one. But A2 is my go to most of the time. Great video Maymay!
Wow Maymay! Great video! A lot of helpful information! I make most of my cards A2 size, but I am starting to branch out more. I bought a bunch of pre made cards from craft stores while they were on sale, and I am getting towards the end of them. When I do, I will stick with standard sizes most of the time. I do have an envelope maker, but to be honest, I don't use it often. There is an app for it that if you put in the measurements of the card, it tells you what size to make the envelope. One more thing, for a card exchange, someone made a beautiful Christmas card that fit inside a regular letter envelope. For someone who can't get to craft stores and doesn't want to try making an envelope, maybe that would be a thought. Thank you for another great video.
I almost always make A-2 cards. I had pretty good luck finding colored envelopes and matching cards back when I ordered for a craft store so it was just a natural thing to start there. I try to make 'flatter" cards now...at least some of the time for mailing so I don't have to worry how they go through the mail (or more importantly) how they arrive to the recipient.

Thank you. This is so helpful. Especially learning about the card sizes. As someone new to card making, I was recently following a tutorial for making 20 notecards with one 12x12. The instructor said to use the notecards available on her web shop, but didn't say the dimensions. I just wanted to make my own, so I googled standard size for notecard and made 20 of them and put them aside to work on the embellishments and matting. When I went to dry fit the pieces, they fell short of fitting. Not a big deal, I just pulled out the trimmer and cut the cards down. It all ended well.
Denise Ferguson I am anal retentive so I like my envelopes to snugly fit my cards, but of course any configuration other than rectangular envelopes, i.e. square, would incur additional postage :-).

Carta Bella has matching 6x6 paper pads and 12x12 pads. I like to use the 6x6 pads to make my cards and the 12 x 12 pad to make matching envelopes. :)
Do you make videos using the 6x6 pads? I'm new to car making and I have some 6x6 paper packs but have no clue how to make cards with them.

I love you and all of your information and helpful tips/careful research. I just wanted to mention that I have commonly had my A2 sized cards that are thicker than 1/4 inch be processed as "packages". Instead of paying an additional twenty-something cents, I have had to accept the fact that my dimensional cards, although being A2 size and only an ounce or two will cost me a dollar twenty something or more because of 3/8 to 1/2 inch thickness. ALSO- be aware that 6"x6" cards ALWAYS cost extra postage.

My favorites are the A2 and the 3 x 3 cards. Also I make an odd 3 1/8 x 6 1/8 cards a lot, cause those fit in the standard small bill size regular envelopes. I make a lot of those, in fact I made a bunch of Christmas cards last year using those envelopes and it was great, I didn't have to spend more for mailing.
Thank you Maymay, that is so helpful. It helps to explain why we pay so much in postage for items purchased from the USA. I live in the UK and we can pay customs and duty on anything over £15 which includes the cost of postage. I use A4 as our standard paper size, sorry don't know the measurements. I like to make bigger cards so would typically fold an A piece of paper in half or use either 6x6 or 8x8 which is a popular size card. We too have a postal formula in very much the same way you do so that we can check to ensure that envelopes are neither too big or wide. I'm guessing that this was standardized throughout the world. Here's my take on this:
I prefer larger cards as I think they are easier to design. I usually cut my 8-1/2 x 11" cardstock in half and wind up with 2 pieces that are hinged together. Plus, this makes them stand up wonderfully! Also, I make lots of envelopes as my cards have many layers to them & need a "boxelope" to put them in. lol I use both my ScorPal and my envelope punch board to make them.
I prefer the ScorPal as the score tool is perfectly designed NOT to cut my paper, no matter how thin it is. I had the MS board but got rid of it due to too many wrecked papers from their score tool and my stylus did not fit into the grooves well at all. I guess we all just get used to what we have or started with from the beginning.

I typically make A2 card size because of the efficiency of the card base. I do try to limit the dimensional elements on my Christmas cards because of the mailing issues. Cards to be delivered in person or sent in a priority box are the most fun because I am able to embellish as desired. Thank you for the excellent tutorials. Wishing you a super week. Hugs Susan

This is brilliant! It will definitely go into my favorites to refer to often. I usually make 5x7 cards. I purchase the blank cards and envelope sets when they are on sale and keep a big stash of them. I use a lot of Anna Griffin products, and her things are geared for mostly 5x7. Also, when doing card fronts, I can get four 5x7 panels from a 12x12 piece of paper. I have occasionally made a 5x5 card and popped it into a 5x7 envelope, but haven't dabbled much in other card sizes. A lot of my bulky cards go to people at church, so they are hand delivered. Thanks for this wonderful lesson! I would love to see what you do with all the sizes you showed.
All those bases you made, I would love to see you (interesting challenge here,) make the same card design (or similar since size might dictate,) on all of them, to see how they come out/look. That was the first thing that popped into my head and sounded so interesting. =) The challenge being, a design you could adapt to each of the sizes and how to make that happen.

This was super informative!!! When I started doing my own cards, I only did the 8.5x11 folded because I did everything in my Hallmark card studio software and it was set at default size so I did no cutting. Once I got into actual card making, I would use the premade bases sold in boxes with the matching envelope. Now I try to make my own bases as I learn more skills! This video helped a lot, TFS!!!!☺️😊

Thank you about postage. So many rules. I made 6x6 cards without knowing that extra postage was required and paid when they were all returned. I now make 6x6 cards and mail them in rectangle envelopes. I like to make both A2 and A7 cards. I am enjoy making center step cards - small and large size - that I cut with dies.
This is great information and so helpful. I really like the A2 size cards because the bigger cards are just a little overwhelming to me. Love your tutorial and li e and hugs to you Vince and all the gang. They do a wonderful job.

I wish way back when I started I'd have seen this video...it would have helped me understand so much. I used a computer program to make cards and in the beginning all I knew were half fold and quarter fold cards. ;0) I think my favorite is the A2 not only because you can get 2 cards out of every piece of 8 1/2 x 11 card stock but because you can also make the envelope out of an 8 1/2 x 11 piece as well. I live in a town where if you can't get supplies at Wal-Mart or Dollar Tree (and lately my Dollar Tree hasn't been so good) you have to order it on-line...so 8 1/2 x 11 paper works best for me. ;0)

I have sent a2 cards with some bumpy embellishments that were still light, and thin enough to go through the slot. I slid a 4.25x5.5 piece of cardstock in front of the card. Those mailed just fine.
I wrote this on the last video, but I am an A2 card maker. I donate a lot of cards. I make over 500 cards a year. I need low waste. I try to donate at least 300 cards to the USO each year. Larger cards means more space to fill on the i sides.
The Fond Noel stamp set makes awesome quick one layer cards! I received my set last week. Life got a little crazy so I have only made 4 cards with it so far. I am going to try to make 40 cards with it this week.

I have been an Anna Griffin follower for many years also and make 5x7 Cards and 6x6 sometimes. One thing I noticed when you showed that device from WeRMemoryKeepers, I didn't notice the ability to make an "Envelope Box" that the Original one has (you know it puts a 1/4" side all around your envelope). I will make one out of coordinating AGriffin CS for the Real BIG cards! lol! Just something I think the newbies would like to know about!

6x6 cards are also nonmachinable and cost the extra 21 cents. You can purchase 70 cent stamps for nonmachinable cards (49 + 21 cents) just ask your post office to order them if they don't have them in stock. Good job Mayday on explaining! I work for USPS and couldn't have done better!

My main card size is an A2, but I also like to make square ones once in a while, 5x7's and I love the business sized envelope one. But A2 is my go to most of the time. Great video Maymay!

Wow Maymay! Great video! A lot of helpful information! I make most of my cards A2 size, but I am starting to branch out more. I bought a bunch of pre made cards from craft stores while they were on sale, and I am getting towards the end of them. When I do, I will stick with standard sizes most of the time. I do have an envelope maker, but to be honest, I don't use it often. There is an app for it that if you put in the measurements of the card, it tells you what size to make the envelope. One more thing, for a card exchange, someone made a beautiful Christmas card that fit inside a regular letter envelope. For someone who can't get to craft stores and doesn't want to try making an envelope, maybe that would be a thought. Thank you for another great video.
I almost always make A-2 cards. I had pretty good luck finding colored envelopes and matching cards back when I ordered for a craft store so it was just a natural thing to start there. I try to make 'flatter" cards now...at least some of the time for mailing so I don't have to worry how they go through the mail (or more importantly) how they arrive to the recipient.

Thank you. This is so helpful. Especially learning about the card sizes. As someone new to card making, I was recently following a tutorial for making 20 notecards with one 12x12. The instructor said to use the notecards available on her web shop, but didn't say the dimensions. I just wanted to make my own, so I googled standard size for notecard and made 20 of them and put them aside to work on the embellishments and matting. When I went to dry fit the pieces, they fell short of fitting. Not a big deal, I just pulled out the trimmer and cut the cards down. It all ended well.

Denise Ferguson I am anal retentive so I like my envelopes to snugly fit my cards, but of course any configuration other than rectangular envelopes, i.e. square, would incur additional postage :-).
