  • This was a personal by Burch who has been a fan of the Karen since he was very young and considers her voice to be one of the greatest of all time in pitch and tone. Alexis really liked the fact that not only did Karen have an amazing voice but she was also a very good drummer. The Carpenters were an amazing band and this song, Rainy Days and Mondays is one of their most loved by fans. Burch also explains to Alexis the tragedy of loosing Karen to an eating disorder at such a young age at a time when that subject was a taboo to discuss in public.

New subscriber! Burch, I agree with you 100% about Karen Carpenter and her amazing vocal talent! I had a huge crush on her back in the day! Thank you both for a great reaction! Another amazing talent from that same era, that you may or may not have reacted to yet, was Judisth Durham of The Seekers ("Georgy Girl," etc...). She too had a crystal clear voice. I would love to see y'all react to The Seekers as well. Thanks!

I wonder how many of us who were kids then saw video clips of them performing (such as when we watched adult variety shows with our parents, which I found boring and thus rarely did). Hearing this song on the radio was an experience - hearing that iconic harmonica intro takes me right back to 5th grade.
Even though I know the words to all of their radio hits by heart, I didn’t know Karen Carpenter was a drummer until UA-cam came along 15 years ago.

Karen had the most effortless and pure voice. She really went through so much having to deal with being in that spotlight. The pressure of being thin and keeping up that image lead to her early death. Heartbreaking. Superstar is my absolute favorite of their songs.

Karen, in my opinion, had the best female voice ever. For someone who never wanted the spotlight, she blew everyone else away. It took her brother a long time to convince her to be the lead singer. She was happiest playing her drums. She always sang from the heart and always seemed so sad. Although she married, I don't think she ever really found the love she dreamed of. Well, I am sure now, since she passed away just how much the WORLD really lover her. No doubt that she is leading the Lord's choir in heaven! Every time I hear her, I get teary-eyed. Taken much too soon from us. R.I.P. KAREN

Growing up it wasn’t cool to like what was called “easy listening,” but as I’ve grown older I’ve really grown to appreciate The Carpenters. I normally don’t like perfect music, I like flaws, but The Carpenters are truly flawless, there’s no mistakes in their music, everything is right on the money, and the craftsmanship is remarkable. Karen Carpenter couldn’t hit a bad note if she tried, and she was a very rare talent, may she Rest In Peace

No woman singer can hit those lower notes so effortlessly as she does and then go high and not lose anything in her tone. Karen Carpenter is a legend and the beautiful women actually never knew it because she was so down to earth. In my opinion if you do not love Karen's Voice and her personality I would check your pulse. Simply Amazing !!!. One of the country songs they recorded was "Sweet Sweet Smile" written by Juice Newton & Otha Young.

I totally agree. Karen Carpenter is worthy to be considered the best female singer of all time. However, the world would never have had Karen Carpenter, were it not for her big brother, Richard. Together, this sibling duo WAS The Carpenters. Early on, Richard was ONLY TRUE music talent in their family. By the age of 13, Richard was dubbed by his Yale music instructor as a music prodigy. Richard IS the OTHER HALF of The Carpenters. He is a highly talented pianist & composer, he sang backup, & arranged ALL The Carpenters' songs. Karen looked up to her big brother's musical talent & was her major influence in wanting to get involved with music. Their EQUALLY COMBINED musical talents created The Carpenters & made them music LEGENDS. If not for Richard & their STRONG brother/sister relationship, we would never have had Karen Carpenter to APPRECIATE for ETERNITY. I enjoy your reactions and your channel. Thank you!

My dad had the Carpenters in his 70 Chevelle 8-track on a rotation. Vividly recall that as a kid. Didn't really give it much thought til i was older, then realized how good she was. Very few can match Karen's pure vocal pitch/tone. When i think of the best female vocalists, Karen, Patsy Cline, Peggy Lee & Judy Garland come immediately to mind.

Karen Carpenter was one of two female singers who possessed an X-men styled superpower. Both she and Ella Fitzgerald had the power to immediately change mood just by singing. When I hear Karen it's like I've been wrapped in warm velvet--I can literally feel a physical and mental relaxation settle over me. One of the all-time greats.

It can be difficult to see the video to this song. Seeing how beautiful she was and amazing she was singing and drumming can just choke me up even today. My first exposure to the Carpenters was on the school bus when the girls in the choir would sing their songs, and of course they were everywhere on the radio. When she died it just seemed unreal and you thought it couldn't be so.

There was so much great music made in the 1970s that we didn't consider the Carpenter's music "cool". However, no matter what kind of music you liked, when Karen's voice came on the radio everyone listened. We all knew how special she was. The sad thing is that she really didn't know how loved she was. When I heard she had passed away, it felt like I had been kicked in the stomach.

I first saw them in a band called Spectrum at the Whisky-A-GO-GO in Los Angeles in 1966 or 67. You seldom saw a female drummer back then so they stuck in my mind. Did not normally go to the Whisky as Shelly’s Man-Hole (a jazz club owned by Shelly Mann) was more to my liking. The next time I saw them their band had broken up and Richard had formed a 3 piece Jazz band he on keyboards or piano and Karen on the drums with Wes Jacobs on bass. She was an accomplished jazz drummer one of her idols was Joe Morello (Dave Brubeck's drummer). By 16 she had a drum set like Morello’s and could play “Take 5”. By 19 (when signed with A&M) she had a 3 octave contralto (B2 to B5sharp) voice the angels were jealous of . Richard had numerous roles in Carpenters, including record producer, arranger, pianist, keyboardist, and songwriter, as well as joining with Karen on harmony vocals. Herp Alpert heard one of their demo tapes and signed them with A&M records in 1969 and let them do their own thing. Their first album "Offering" did not do to well but the second (1970) "Close To You" went to #1 and won them a Grammy for best duo album beating the Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel with several of the singles going to 1 or 2 and everything after was pure gold (they also renamed "Offering" "Ticket To Ride" and it did better). Their career ended in 1983 when Karen died at 32 of complications from anorexia. Would recommend “Rainy Days and Mondays” or “(groupies) Superstar” or “Goodbye to Love” it was the first power ballad with Toni Peluso on the fuzzy guitar or “Ticket to Ride” a Beatles cover which Lennon when ask about it said how can you complain when an angel takes one of you song and makes it hers? Many of her fans were entertainers themselves Sinatra said the only one he would pay to see was Karen Carpenter. Both McCarthy and Lenon complimented her Lenon was ask what he thought of them covering "Ticket To Ride" his reply if an angel sings your song how can you complain? I am getting really long winded so will stop.
PS Whitney Houston had a range from G2 to G#5, (almost 3 octaves) with the ability to belt up to C6. No one knows what Karen could belt to as she never belted. She let the music softly flow like honey on velvet.

Thank you so much for doing this vocal reaction to KC. A great reaction and you are very pleasant to watch. Karen and Richard Carpenter -- the greatest brother and sister muscial duo in history. I fell in love with their music back in the 70's. Karen's liquid gold and smooth honey voice and her physical beauty just captivated me. Today is 40 years since her passing. I still remember the day when the news announced her passing. The Carpenters -- made some of the best and most beautiful love songs, ballads, torch songs, country, jazz....in music history. Why they have still not been inducted into the R&R Music Hall of Fame is a tragedy. Brother Richard and Sister Karen were both one offs, "diamonds in the rough". They were gifted musical prodigies. Karen's voice was one of a kind and Richard was a great and still underrated pianist, conductor, composer, arranger and song writer. This brother and sister team truly complimented each other. Now, imagine becoming the greatest female vocalist ever and on top of that, the greatest female drummer at the same time and doing both at once! Richard and Karen's musical talents were off the chart. No auto-tune, screaming, bellowing, ripping off clothes, pyrotechnics, dancers...etc., that you see today. None of today's modern singers can come close to KC. She was known as "One Take Karen". She was also a talented comedian, dancer and would have surely gone on to star in movies, stage musicals and so much more. Karen left us two legacies. The first was her gifted voice and the second, unfortunately, due to the circumstances surrounding her passing, was putting a spotlight on anorexia nervosa. Her passing truly SAVED so many young women from ending up on the same path. Why Karen and Richard (but especially Karen) has been forgotten is a tragedy. I can't understand why the nationwide radio stations do not play Carpenter's music. You only hear them at Christmas. I am sure that if the radio stations were to start playing all of the Carpenter's hits again, people would go nuts and the Carpenters would be reborn again. One thing that I believe Richard and Karen missed out on was doing a "AMERICAN SONGBOOK" album or double album. Karen did sing some of these songs like "Little Girl Blue" and several others but what a missed opportunity! Image Karen Carpenter singing all the great classics from the American Songbook. It surely would have been the greatest selling album of all time. To The Vocalyst coach, please consider doing more reactions to Karen's voice. So many songs that send chills up your spine with her melancholy voice like "Sometimes", "Little Girl Blue", "Eve", "Nowhere Man", "California Dreamin", "Evita", "Ava Maria", "Yesterday Once More", "I Won't Last a Day Without You", "Solitaire", "One More Time", "This Masquerade", "A Song for You", "Sweet, Sweet Smile", "I Just Fall in Love Again," "Can't Smile Without You", "One Love", "Two Sides", "Make Believe It's Your First Time", "Now", "If We Try", "You", "Someday" and so many more. Can we start a petition to get the nationwide radio stations to start playing Carpenters music again? Thank you again for doing this tribute reaction and I am looking forward to you doing many more. THE VOICE...THE DRUMMER...THE LEGACY!!!!

In my opinion Karen Anne Carpenter was and will always be the greatest singer that ever lived. She had a phenominal voice, a Contralto with a 3 1/2 octave range, but her voice will always be unequaled, and unmatched. Whitney is a great singer, no denying that but did she touch people's hearts, Yes, but did she do what Karen did? No. Karen touched our souls. And she played the drums incredibly well, so you can't compare the two at all as Whitney did not play a musical Instrument. Like Richard, Karen was a absolute "Genius" her voice was always 100% perfection on every word and every song and the listener goes through 20 different emotions listening to Karen sing as only she could do. She worked with her brother Richard on the Arrangements and most of the recordings the Carpenters recorded Karen nailed the vocals on the first take. There is no comparison to Karen Anne Carpenter. 200 years from now, she will still be the Greatest singer who ever lived.

Arguably one of the best female Alto singers ever, and that's in an amazing field of Stevie Nicks, Annie Lenox, Sade, and Norah Jones to name just a handful. But as a note, Hal Blaine actually played the drums on the album recording. The song was written by Paul Williams, who also wrote "We've Only Just Begun" and other huge hits like "Rainbow Connection", "Evergreen, etc. It was recorded while she was 20 years old.

The purity and tone and her lower register make her for me the finest singer, certainly female, of all time. She doesn't need to do runs or go for broke on her high notes. She sings from her soul and her heart, simply luscious and sweet and calming.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

If you really want to hear Carpenters with a country feel, react to Sweet Sweet Smile. It was written by Juice Newton and Otha Young for Juice but her record company didn’t like it for the album she was working on. Karen visited Juice’s manager and he played a demo of the song and she fell in love with the song. She took it to Richard and he did what he always did and made it a Carpenters song. It made it to number 8 on the country chart in 1978. Please react to this song, you will not be disappointed!

How they were able to leave a HUGE impact on my youth and today's youth! Karen's voice and Richard's arrangements were a PERFECT match!!

My favorite, of theirs, has always been "For All We Know." Slower, and, in my humble opinion, more beautiful singing from her, than their others.
If you've ever seen those TV commercials advertising some brand of chocolate truffles...and a French chef looking dude is stirring melted chocolate...that silky smooth liquid chocolate... that's Karen Carpenter's voice.

Karen had absolute pitch and her bout with anorexia brought attention to anorexia nervosa, which had been ignored previously. If Alexis likes saxophone solos, may I make a request for either Unchain My Heart by Joe Cocker or Long As I Can See The Light by CCR, both have great sax solos. As for harmonica, John Popper, Big Momma Thorton, Charlie McCoy, John Lee Hooker, Paul Butterfield, and Sonny Boy Williamson are all incredible players. See y'all tonight at 7. 🙌✌️

I was a kid when she passed away. I knew there was something wrong . Even at 5 yo, people would say isn't she so pretty? I would look at her deteriorating right in front of me. I would tell my family something is not right with her. A few months later she died. So if I noticed something was wrong as a child why didn't people closer to her notice? I felt bad for her and her family.

The best female voice of all time. Unmatched for her tone, warmth and vocal range.
As of today, October 6, 2023, Richard Carpenter is working on a new studio album. This album will be her first solo recording since 1987's "Time Out of Mind." Carpenter has been working on the album for several years, and has been searching for a vocalist who can fill the void left by her sister Karen, who died in 1983.
In an interview with Billboard in 2022, Carpenter said that the album will have a sound similar to that of the Carpenters, but that it will also be an evolution of his sound. "It's still soft rock, but it's a little more modern," Carpenter said. "There's also a bit of experimentation."
Carpenter has not yet announced a release date for the album, but has said that he hopes it will be released in 2024.
In addition to his work on the new album, Carpenter is also working on a documentary about the life and career of the Carpenters. The documentary, which is being produced by the company "Greenwich Entertainment", will be released in 2024.
Carpenter also continues to tour and give concerts. In 2023, he toured the United States with singer-songwriter Michael Feinstein.
There is no voice today that compares to Karen Carpenter's. She was a unique musical genius in the world and goes far beyond her time. It without autotune or any other manipulation. Just her voice and her brother Richard's incredible arrangements. No current artist can match this in this era. Karen was also one of the best drummers of her time and she could sing well while she played the drums simultaneously. A true top talent. RIP Karen Carpenter, We will always remember you and love you!!! 💛💛💛
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
QEPD Karen Carpenter, ¡¡¡ Siempre te recordaremos y te querremos!!! 💛💛💛

Just to make something clear... to the best of my knowledge, the recordings have such gorgeous expanded harmonies because Richard and Karen were singing ALL the parts and overdubbing them to the record. Saw them twice in concert and they had great musicians who doubled as the background singers, but a brother/sister duo covering all the parts is pretty hard to beat !! Their lush sound was one of the first things that grabbed me when I chanced to hear their version of "Ticket to Ride".

Here's a country song from the Carpenters: "Sweet, Sweet Smile." Oh, and if you ever want to try one that no reactors, but maybe two, have done online, "Ordinary Fool" isn't known to a lot of more casual Carpenters fans. Very, very soulful. Karen slinks and slides into and out of phrases on this one. I was surprised the first time I heard this. :) Thanks, guys. Enjoyed the reaction.
