“Superstar” really showcases her voice. Richard Carpenter and Karen Carpenter were brother and sister. She died tragically at a young age from complications from anorexia. Karen was an accomplished drummer - she thought of herself as a drummer who sang. She had one of the THE truly great voices.

One of America's greatest female vocalists EVER. Gone far too soon at age 32. Probably the first famous person to die of anorexia. Just two average kids from Downey, California who became overnight international superstars. PLEASE listen to all the song recommendations surely coming in the comments. "Superstar" and "Close to You" are incredible. Also, a lot of huge rock stars regarded her as one of the best drummers anywhere.

Being born in 1970, I would hear this music on the car radio and my mom hum to it. As I grew up I rediscovered it and as I got married and divorced and unemployed and thru tough situations, I listen to this song and other Carpenter songs as the words would hit me hard, cry and help heal me. The Carpenters and music from the 1970s really delivered good messages of sadness and healing and resolve and so this song and many of the other carpenters songs helped get me thru some really tough situations in my life. Glad you both had a chance to enjoy a golden classic. Songs like these never get old and always make a comeback in some form. Tragic what happened to Karen Carpenter. Timeless is the only word to describe this song as I listened to it many times over and over again only when I need healing or feel alone. This song is a good remedy for that.

While Richard arranged all the songs, he didn't write all of them (though he did write many). This particular song was written by Paul Williams. His mother was puttering around and mumbling in the kitchen, and when he asked her what was going on, she replied that she was just talking to herself and feeling old. He just went with it from there. Paul Williams wrote several hits for The Carpenters: We've Only Just Begun, I Won't Last a Day Without You, and Rainy Days and Mondays among them. He wrote hits for other groups as well. One of his better known songs is The Rainbow Connection, which was prominently featured in The Muppet Movie.

ALL true music aficionados know of this duo, their hits and karen's one of the greatest female voices who ever lived voice.... karen and richard also were world class in the instruments they played, karen on drums, richard on piano.. karen sang lead, richard who chose and orchestrated all the songs, sang back up and they did ALL of the background harmonies using a dubbing technique to record their voices in different octaves and pitch...

Karen Carpenter is the lead singer and drummer in the Carpenters and her brother writes the songs. Another song you guys should react to is "Close To You."

The Carpenters were the a brother and sister musical team. Richard was responsible for the musical side (finding songs and arranging music), Karen sang with her incredible gift and played drums. Many of a certain generation know the song " Superstar" by Luther Vandross, it was Karen who made it a hit back in 1972. The first time she grabbed our attention her voice was with "Close to You", a song which songwriter Burt Bacharach had recorded with other artists and had little success.Unfortunately, it was Karen untimely death in 1983, that brought attention to a little known condition (at the time) called anorexia nervosa. Other hits, were We've Only Just Begun, For All We Know, Sing, Yesterday Once More, Goodbye to Love, Top Of The World and the Christmas classic Merry Christmas, Darling.

Welcome to The Carpenters rabbit hole. Once you hear Karen's voice you can't get enough. She sang like an angel and was a great drummer, at the same time. Sadly she died at a young age, but her brother Richard, has kept their music alive. I love when people first discover their music.

Listen to her Superstar. Also watch her drum solo. She was a premier drummer. Her and her brother Richard had such a special bond. She did all her songs in 1 take. She was known for it. Her voice is absolutely haunting.
