Acts 16:30-34 ESV - Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.” And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their wounds; and he was baptized at once, he and all his family. Then he brought them up into his house and set food before them. And he rejoiced along with his entire household that he had believed in God.

One game I've always praised for having a constant feeling of loneliness is Pikmin 1. While Olimar is never really alone thanks to the pikmin, he's the only actual character in the game, and more importantly the only person who talks, and most of what he talks about is how he wants to be with his family, which is relatable to a lot of people. I like it because you really get to know Olimar well in that game with his comments on each of his ship parts and daily journal entries which are all monologues. That combined with the alien feeling of the world and its atmospheric music really cements the feeling of being alone (plus the fact that Olimar is shipwrecked and stranded and nobody knows where he is). No other pikmin game has come close to that level of atmosphere in my opinion

Yes, love this about pikmin 1!
I think this is one of the reasons pikmin 4 didn't resonate with me as much, there are so many people around and you never really feel that loneliness or urgency that 1 (and to some extent, 3) had going for them.

Dark Souls really hit the loneliness for me. Especially once all my favorite NPC's started going hollow or some such, I really felt like the sole survivor of an incredibly dangerous but important mission. It almost renewed my purpose to attempt and save this world, specifically for the sake of my friends who couldn't make it. This was underscored by some of the grand vistas such as Anor Londo and Ash Lake, but it all came full circle with that absolutely mystical credits theme.

Sonic Frontiers is another game that does this. People complained how empty and lonely the 4 islands were, but the whole point behind it was the fact that a civilization used to live there before they were wiped out. It's supposed to be empty and lonely, the wind blowing in the back, and the ambient noise really does a good job as well

I think subnautica is a prime example of loneliness. There are no jumpscares in that game, at least not with any intention to turn it into a horror experience. Yet, left stranded at the sea, in the deep dark depths, where human senses fail you and your mind starts conjuring images of what may lurk in the dark... It's paranoia and loneliness at its best. You are alone during subnautica. It's just you and the endless sea

  • @Brianycus

The best feeling of loneliness that isn't like a horror game is the Metroid Prime game. You are alone in a new planet with wildlife all around you and a conspiracy amongst it, and you just gotta power through it and save the day, and with the music? Oh it makes the atmosphere even better.

I make videos talking about books. And let me tell ya, you never feel alone when reading a book. Whether you’re in the comfort of your home or at a coffee shop.
I recently made a video on modern gaming. And how multiplayer games aren’t as rewarding anymore. They are mindless and repetitive. The only reason I hop on those is to play with friends. Am I having fun in the long run? Not entirely.
Recently I’ve now gone back to play single player games. Witcher 3. Just finished it. One of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had. Now I’m on Elden ring.
I feel these games are more rewarding because I’m not pressured by limited time events and seasonal content. I play how I want when I want.
    Great video dude!

I personally love being alone. I love to play video games solo!!! If the game has a multiplayer, I want to play it solo first to completely experience it on my own, not being concerned about what others think, and then also try out then multiplayer mode. (Except for a few games that are solely playable in co-op, like it takes two for example). I also love reading books, and watching movies and series, which I also love to do alone. I also love melancholy, and really believe that it makes me, and probably also a lot of others, much happier, than only being surrounded by others all the time. Thank you for the video!!!❤️

      @JCMolmMJ 5 днів тому

@@CactousMan Nope, a “long lasting sadness” is depression, not melancholy. As you mentioned, melancholy is kind of similar to nostalgia. Nobody says that nostalgia is an unpleasant feeling right? Same with melancholy. Maybe “Melancholy” isn’t the right word, but you know what I mean. A pleasant, mellow, cozy sadness. And calling me “Lonely weirdo” shows how you are sadly not able to have a normal discussion.

Great video! BotW is in my top 3 favorites because of the loneliness factor. Playing and progressing through it alone gives a sense of achievement. No "high scores" or "competing to be the best". Just you and a world to explore and grow stronger from. I think that loneliness, especially as you've said, in this new digital age, is something many long for now. It's therapeutic and brings a sense of peace.

Great video, but I'd say the king of this concept is Shadow of the Colossus.
One guy running around on horseback with no one to interact with, save for the ceiling demon slowly leading him to his own destruction.
Vast, forbidden environments with not a soul to interact with; so isolating that the supposed death of your horse hits like a freight train because it was the only thing with a pulse you interact with, outside of the titular titans.
And the lack of music allows you to stew in the isolation as you spend literal minutes riding from one boss fight to the next, all while a sense of dread builds with each fallen Goliath.
If you haven't played it, fix that. It is the definition of loneliness.

Weirdly enough, Majora's Mask gives me a sense of loneliness; hear me out. In the town there are lots of people, and there are different villages in the four other areas but when you're doing the dungeons and the areas around them it feels isolating. The whole premise feels isolating, like I'm not alone (there are people around me) but I'm lonely; an outsider who feels fated to help this world I don't know... and when it's all over... we leave, without so much as a goodbye to anyone but skull kid.

I felt that loneliness in Majora’s Mask, and part of the reason why I felt that way in that game is because how immersive it made me feel being Link and knowing about ALL the fates of the people in Termina with the power of time in my hands. Every time I reset time I felt so weird, people were all around living normal lives knowing nothing about what would happen those three days while I was the ONLY one that knew of it. I think that’s what made that game pretty lonely, Link being the only one with such knowledge feels pretty lonely. I think that’s what I think it is. Being the only one that knows the fate of the world is pretty depressing.

Great video. Really nailed the message. And a nice mix of games to look at in terms of how they handle loneliness.
Though also reminds me why I never got into most of these games. Doing for the sake of doing in Minecraft never appealed to me. And it's not like I crave multiplayer games or anything. But those just aren't the gaming worlds I want to engage with. There's a lack of meaning to it for me. A similar issue for Breath of the Wild. All those elements do help build up a sense of loneliness. Yet they can also be a source of frustration depending on the person.
It's an interesting concept to think on.

Subnautica was lonely not just because you were on a planet by yourself, but because every glimmer of hope from rescue to another SOS call you respond to is met with a destroyed life pod. You're always too late and that's what makes that loneliness hit harder. You hear their stories and find things they left behind. Encountering other people actually seems like a possibility. But in the end, it's just you. The further you get away from the safe shallows, the less amount of background music you'll have until it's dead silence and you jump at the sound of a roar off in the distance.

the ending of Halo Reach screams lonely for me. both figuratively and literally. You are one of the last of humanity on Reach. You are the last of Noble Team. Opening with Carter telling you "I read your file, Lieutenant. Even the parts ONI didn't want me to. I'm glad to have your skillset, but you can leave that lone wolf stuff behind." He reminds you that you are a *team*. And yet, every level has a moment of being that Lone Wolf. all the way to those final moments. The last thing Carter tells you is "You're on your own now, Lieutenant. Carter out." Your last moments on Reach is to "survive". You *will* fail. and yet, you fight. You fight alone. You die alone. You're part of a team. And yet... You're alone. It's a melancholy story, a depressing planet, a story of loss and emptiness. Halo tackles loneliness and isolation beautifully in the other games of the franchise too. For most of Chief's Journey, it's just him and Cortana until she sacrifices herself at the end of H4. That very same game, chief wakes up from cryosleep alone. Drifiting through the deep emptiness of space.
Another example are the souls games. But I could write a whole essay on that. Point is, loneliness and hopelessness I think go hand in hand. But in all these games, you're never *truly* alone. You'll always find someone else. Be it a villager in minecraft, a merchant in a roguelike, a summon sign outside a boss room. I think that's the part of these games that really get me. Because even when it seems like you're alone and abandoned. Someone is out there to be there for you. Just gotta find them.

Loneliness in Dark Souls is a big one. From the moment you start your journey you have nothing, therefore you are nothing. You’re rotting away in a dark, lonely, claustrophobic cell all by yourself until one helping hand offers you the hand you need to pull yourself out. As you progress through the game, rarely is there ever a soundtrack; and when there is, it is either an important area or a boss. The presence of music can give you a sense of calm or relief when you rest at the Bonfire at Firelink Shrine, or it can activate a fight or flight response as face a large Taurus Demon with a bombastic orchestra in the background. However, once all is said and done, the silence will return, and your edge will have to remain sharp for the challenges ahead. Dark Soul’s approach to loneliness is to make you feel like the only one you can rely on is yourself in a harsh, indifferent world that is seeing the end of days. Which is why, when you encounter a friendly stranger, it’s all the better, because you may not have to brave the next challenge alone anymore. But, even then, it’s all the same. An eerie, suffocating, lonely silence always creeps back in after victory. Your instincts must always remain sharp.
TL;DR Dark Souls is lonely in a scary way, and you don’t know what the next moment may bring.

@ Minecraft has both single player and multiplayer functionality. The dual mastery of both is what makes the game so popular, it has something for everyone while offering a way to capture the imagination of anyone. The loneliness of the single player is a crucial aspect in the immersion, and without it as the video says it would just feel like a dull grind. The satisfaction and progression would feel shallow, it wouldn’t feel like you’re fighting a whole world that doesn’t know you.

    • @saltylemonton5537
      @saltylemonton5537 13 днів тому

@minecrafter3448 I suppose I could see the argument but only for older versions of minecraft. The newer ones add too much fluff that detracts from the sense of loneliness like random pillager groups and the over abundant structures.
I would say more the sense of discovery is what drives a player in single player today. After this, one's own creativity will drive them to keep playing but with no one to share it with eventually you will just stop playing, try out a challenge like skyblock/superflat survival, or show someone your work and discovery what actually makes the game so great and worth while.

Romans 12:9-21 ESV - Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

It’s weird how the loneliness in BOTW is something I never really thought about before, but in games like Minecraft it’s as apparent as the fact that I’m spending hours playing this game.
I think it’s games that give you time to really think and be alone with yourself that hit the hardest. When you have moments of pause to take in an environment or stop playing to listen to the music.
A sense of melancholy, not bad but not good. That is my loneliness.

Minecrafts lonelyness definetely has decreased over time, as all poorly made video essays will tell you nowadays. Its true though, it really isn't as eerie as it was, but I still love modern minecraft. It's not as bad as many people say. Actually even when I started to play around 1.8 it was already less lonely than in beta. The magic is still there.

I feel like an easy way to see this is to compare the way you feel playing Mario Galaxy vs Galaxy 2, or maybe Breath of the Wild vs Tears of the Kingdom. Take the same world, but cover up those feelings of loneliness, and you're left with a completely different experience despite the gameplay being more or less the same.
Loneliness is part of what makes games so special imo. This is _your_ experience. You can take it at your own pace. It's just you and a massive world waiting to be explored.
Recently played Animal Well, I feel like it also manages to pull this off very well. Though, interestingly, I feel like the general atmosphere of the game changes significantly in the post-game despite nothing really changing. You start to get a feel for how everything works, the world starts to feel much smaller. You are no longer fearing the unknown but actively searching it out, scouring the map for every little nook and cranny. Just by changing the player's goal and context in which you are exploring this world, the feeling completely shifts, and I think that's super cool.

What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.

I feel horror games don't just benefit from lonelyness, but are entirely dependent on it. Of course horror is a fairly broad genre, but I haven't found a horror game thats not lonely. The Five Nights at Freddys series is a good example, especially the first game is super lonely. The horror comes from the ambuguity, and it's just inherently lonely. Same goes for Bendy and The Ink machine, it's how you are completely alone in a weird run down film studio which makes it what it is.
Maybe there are some exeptions, like i wouldn't say Doki Doki is a lonely game, but it rides the line a little bit sometimes. SPOILER ALERT I have kept it ralatively vague, but it really is best if you go in completely spoiler free, the game is free and lasts for 4-6 hours, if you get bored or something, just stick with it until the festival at least, it is worth it. As i was saying, its not a lonely game. The entire point of the game is to make you feel safe and comortable with the game and it's characters. Then the twist comes, and you as a player is left feeling shocked and even a bit guilty for what happened. You actually feel bad for it. Even then, it does have some lonely aspects to it. It breaks the fourth wall in a way which makes you hyper aware that it's a game after the twist. But also, the fourth wall breaks kinda also makes it less lonely, because you are literally being talked to by the ingame characters. Ok I will go full spoilers now. Monica literally confesses her love to you, you as the player, not as who you are playing as. It is a very interesting game in general.
