CSX Office Car Special (...And 3 Other Pretty Cool Trains) - Dumont, NJ

With Wednesday being the most beautiful day of the week having nothing but sun a railfanning trip was in order. This worked out very well as we had heard that the CSX Office Car Special would be running North out of Port Newark on this day. So we arrived in Dumont New Jersey around 9:00 in the morning. We heard a Northbound train as we were getting breakfast in Ridgefield Park and we saw a Southbound train en-route to Dumont. Despite missing most of the morning rush this really was an excellent day, this was the first time we have ever seen an OCS and it was absolutely stunning to see this train in person. This will certainly go down as one of the best days of railfanning we have ever had as later that afternoon we had the chance to see Norfolk Southern's Central of Georgia heritage unit leading 69Q. Yeah it blows, what I really miss about the Conrail days was the run through traffic on NYS&W, that was awesome.

Great video !! Wish I was back in the Dumont to catch that Office Car Special!! FYI Where you stood was the site of the old Dumont NYC sta. The CVS parking lot was the parking lot for the sta. Back in the mid 1960s there was the remains of the sta. under pass so you did not have to cross the tracks. By the time I moved out in the late 80s that had been cleaned up.

Thanks Kyle, the OCS was incredible to see in person! I'm shocked to hear that Q410 made such little distance in 12 hours or so. I'd have to assume the crew you saw outlawed and they couldn't find a relief crew until the next morning.

Thanks man! I've never seen the NS OCS either, but I sure hope I'll be able to see it soon. I actually heard about this train by word of mouth, to just be lucky and catch this must be something else haha. Dumont is essentially Northeast Jersey. It's about a 20 minute drive from Route 80.

P.S., BE VERY CAREFUL IF YOU ARE GOING TO RAILFAN IN DUMONT! An officer confronted me a claimed; "I was trespassing and that you cannot video tape trains because of terrorism fears." He did not give my dad or I a ticket, but he took my name and my dad's name in the police system.

The funny part was that there was a CSX cop there the next day and he said that where I had been railfanning, I wasn't trespassing and I could video-tape trains.
Just be careful. Dumont probably has the best shots in NJ on the CSX River Line, but it's better to play it safe.

1985 there was shoprite were there was sta use to be. but have you been to that pizza place behind him. that pizza is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good. you just need a hole pie of cheezes pizza and a nice cool day and shit load of trains lol
