    Many moons ago, I enjoyed being the “Cut Man” when helping my Brother do siding. I usually only helped out after the starter strip was on. It’s an extremely critical thing to get right! … and can be quite challenging on old houses! thanks for the refresher!

    Hey, thanks Mr. Kongable! That was just what I needed for my next step in making siding repairs.

    But if you seal that tyvek at the bottoM if for any reason water gets behind it from above, it’s gonna fill up hold the water and bubble out the siding

    • @jamesburkett8087
      @jamesburkett8087 4 роки тому

      I would think if you’re going to do that make your bead on a slight slope from each side from high to low, low point being in the middle leave a gap in the middle 12 inch or whatever not caulked so any potential water could all run down the bead and out

    • @mr.kongable

      I'm sealing the concrete and the green treated plate, not the tyvek to the structure, that is what the staples are for

    Nice video. Thanks for posting. Only wish you hadn’t sped up the string line part and actually showed us what you did at the other side. Did you nail into the other spot and wrap the string line around that nail? Or do you just stretch the string line to the nail and pop it? Seems if I wrap it around the nail it may result in an uneven line if the string is on top of the nail on one side and below the nail on the other side? Anyway, gonna give it a shot tomorrow amd see how it works. Thanks for the information.

    • @mr.kongable

      I place the nail slightly below the line so when I wrap the chalk line around the nail, the line is directly on the leveled line. Great question, I should have addressed that in the video.

    Thanks for the video! To get rid of entering mice under the siding, first, I thought it is good to fully cover under the first sheet with drywall MUD but I read some articles that it may keep water and moisture between the wall and the siding, and they recommended to use Steel Wool. My questions:
    1-Is the full coverage of the gap a bad idea? I think it may prevent the other insects and bugs
    2-Is Steel Wool chewable for mice?

    • @mr.kongable
      @mr.kongable  2 роки тому +2

      I think it is fine to cover up the gap, but like they recommend, use steel wool. Mice cannot chew through steel wool.

    Thank you for this video. I want to avoid the situation when I have to cut a portion of the siding under the window because I can install the window at the proper calculated distance in my shed. Question - what would be the height of the installed ten sidings?

    • @mr.kongable
      @mr.kongable  5 місяців тому +1

      You would need to know what your specific siding measures. If it’s a Double 4” like this siding, you would multiply 10x 4” or 5x8”, this should give you the measurement so you wouldn’t have to cut for the window

    Great job well thought out, only one question...by this method should the marks on either end be level to eachother ? Or was that done in another video installing the corner trim. This is NOT a criticism just a question.

    • @mr.kongable
      @mr.kongable  2 роки тому

      You are correct, the marks are leveled before I put the corner on. Ideally, a person would have a transit and be able to level the whole way along the wall.

      @@mr.kongable I'm a home builder in NH and have never done vinyl only pp cedar or pine clapboards but with costs out of site my customer wanted vinyl. Ill use rotary laser to start unless you think differently im just not sure how accurate I need to be with vinyl due to the fastening technique. Wood is a bit forgiving. Anyway you do a great job I had my customer also watch your videos...its my ex wife!

    How do you know that chalk line is level? If you're just measuring off the concrete how do you ensure the concrete is level?

    • @mr.kongable
      @mr.kongable  2 роки тому +1

      I would highly doubt that every home owner who wants to do a little siding to save some money has a transit.

      @PUBLIC AUTOMOTIVE ADVISOR I can understand that, many people believe if they don’t know an answer, it’s an attack on them( and an attack on their ego). I try to admit when I don’t know something. I should also start making some retraction videos on some of my older stuff . It’s a good thing to keep learning and growing, thanks for the criticism, it helps me as a teacher to instruct my students in class.

      @mr.kongable so how do we make the snap line level? Are we measuring from the foundation, the roof, or using a level. Beginner builder here, so sorry if it's a common knowledge question.

    What do you do if your bottom wall plate extends out past the footers 1/4-1/2”?

    • @mr.kongable
      @mr.kongable  Рік тому

      One thing you could do is bend coil stock so it covers the underside of the plate and then have the bottom of your starter be a 1/4 to 1/2” below the plate
