Wild that there's plans to demolish a 20 year old stadium in order to replace it with a stadium with the exact same seating. Whatever happened to the phrase "if it ain't broke don't fix it"? Wouldn't replacing the stadium just present the exact same problem 20 years down the road?

    • @gary1201

Not exactly as the stadium is used very differently now to how it was built. There are no oval sports played there, so if it was a permanent rectangular stadium with closer, better seating that would be quite different to what they have now.

Do you think that maybe just maybe it’s occupancy or lack there of is due to management?!?
You do realise that the Sydney Thunder and GWS both use Engie Stadium as their home respective home grounds .
Can I ask where exactly that is in relation to the fabled stadium Australia or Accor Stadium?
For those that don’t know it’s about 300m away
So saying that it’s not feasible for clubs due to its location is utter dross , having been to afl and early big bash games out at stadium Australia I can tell you for free it was 100 percent the cost of tickets there that killed clubs wanting to go there.
You also go on to say Sydney needs a modern stadium to compete with Melbourne yet how old is the MCG ?
I think it’s time Sydney Siders face the fact every thing is Sydney isn’t worth what they think it is.
It’s 100% the management of it not the location

The advantage Melbourne has is you can spend time in the bars and restaurants in the CBD before and after games, the day becomes a whole of day entertainment event. The city comes alive as tens of thousands of sporting fans move around the town. Sydney needs to bite the bullet and find space near the city and CBD and see it come alive.

I don't see anything majorly wrong with this stadium. Just configure it for a rectangular field and keep capacity over 80 thousand. With Sydney's population growing, why do we keep wanting to build a new stadium that hosts less people?? SMH. Aussie's rebuild should have brought it up to 50 - 60 thousand, not stay at 40. Unless Stadium Aus is going to collapse in the next 30 years, why do we need to keep knocking down and rebuilding?? Crazy waste of money just so some corporate wankers can go hang out somewhere twice a year. The punters don't care about corporate boxes and in-stadium "venues". Some of the money the state govt saves can be used to subsidise tickets and for food and drink. How about, for every $50 voucher you get $100 value?? Everything becomes half-price, families can go to the footy for a fair price. That'll fill the seats more often. Stop buying and promoting the BS from those who simply want to bulldoze so they can profit, while we the public pay like mugs for billions of dollars of unnecessary rebuilds. Get the seats closer to the field, some minor upgrades and that's it.

One of the problems is that the Govt built Commbank/Parramata/WSS. Its essentially in the same catchment (geograohic centre of Sydney) and pulled away half the tenants.
Ive never liked the half baked renovations. The big issue with the stadoum is unless you are on the lower level that moves in you are a long way from the pitch, and a roof doesnt fix that.
I wonder if a cheaper option might be to demolish only one grandstand and rebuild it 20-30m closer, with the pitch moved towards the remaining grandstand and lower deck retracted

It’s still a good stadium. If a rebuild costs say only 25% more than a renovation than better off doing a rebuild but it’s just not necessary at the moment. I recon just keep it as is for say another 10 -12 years & then do a knock down rebuild. That’s a win win, we get the best possible new stadium without the compromises that come with renovation & we get decent life out of the stadium we have.

You could argue that Sydney likes a bit of “nothing” rather than “everything”. Unfortunately as an entertainment city, Sydney has been on the decline since the mid 2000s.
In Melbourne people can go to the footy at the MCG, a show in the city or South Bank, a late dinner or bar in the CBD, all in the same evening and within walking distance.
Nothing is open after 10pm in Sydney and everywhere is so far from anywhere else. It has the bones to be a brilliant cultural draw for people but continues to fail in its delivery.

With the SCG at capacity again over the weekend for the Swans v Cats match, there'll be pressure from both the Swans and the AFL for a refurbishment of the SCG. Tom Harley flagged this on an SEN interview back in 2022; he would expect a refurbishment of one of the stands to be the next major infrastructure project in Sydney. Depending on how big of a job they commit to, it could see the Swans needing to play a portion of games elsewhere for one or more years and Stadium Australia makes the most sense while they can still, as you pointed out, configure the ground to an oval shape.

    • @harejam9528
      @harejam9528 3 місяці тому +4

Good idea. Use it for a bit, takes pressure off getting the SCG done. Also gives the government some extra time to plan what to do with accor. If the swans play how they have been recently, they could be getting 50k at some big games at accor. Furthermore, the new years test at accor could get attendance similar to the MCG (in terms of how full a ground of similar magnitude gets).

As an AFL and NRL fan living in Adelaide the problem I find with Accor Stadium is Sydney is spoiled for choice of entertainment and pubs/bars/hotels that unlike the AFL which capitalises on the NFL tailgate atmosphere, the NRL the aleague or rugby Australia will never be able to sustainably attract enough foot traffic towards a centralised location like Homebush. Honestly Allianz Stadium should have been renovated at 75,000 to resemble Manchester United Old Trafford stadium. That way you can capitalise on people travelling into the Sydney CBD and taking the short trip to Moore Park and Randwick. That didn’t happen so unfortunately the drab that Accor Stadium has become simply can’t be abandoned like how Brazil, Beijing and Athens abandoned their Olympic stadiums

Seriously I would keep the stadium as is; small refresh every few years; Australian rugby may become good again, the Swans or Giants may rethink their own home grounds ten years down the track; there will still be a Taylor Swift superstar in 5 or 10 years time.

WSS may have way less capacity but it is a far, far superior stadium for rectangular sports. Not only was it purpose built, but they also used steeper stands like Europe which generates a great atmosphere. I actually wish they rebuilt the SFS in the same way. You have to change trains at Lidcombe and go to a dedicated entertainment precinct. This also means that any surrounding entertainment is all part of the same complex. It's not nice bars and restaurants surrounding the stadium, but tacky, expensive, subpar venues owned by the stadium. This means at the end of big events, you have 40 - 80,000 patrons all trying to cram into the same dedicated train station because no one wants to hang around. It was an absurd decision to turn it into a fixed rugby soccer ground. Its amazing that it can be AFL, cricket and any other sport or activity. The issue is that the Stadium doesn't offer enough to AFL, cricket, EPL teams... Sydney vs Giants during year. Especially at the moment they'd get almost 60,000 maybe more. Why wouldn't Sydney in the BBL play 5 games minimum there? (25k plus double for finals). Then surely Rugby would get 50k for an international. Double headers for NRL games? Finals NRL... NFL game would sell out. EPL practice matchs would sell out. After all Roma vs ACMilan got 60k in Perth last week. Baseball from US... and it goes on. Surely it gets more than one concern. So I think the Stadium needs to produce a better deal for the sporting codes.

So, while Sydney is getting big crowds at the Olympic Stadium they lose their home ground advantage. So Sydney not playing there is a blow. In reality Sydney will outgrow the SCG, so the government and cricket authorities need to increase capacity for cricket and football. Likewise cricket needs an 80k stadium in Sydney with all the Indian and Pakistan fans there. Blockbuster series between the two countries need to be held each year. People go on about needing rectangular only. But NRL crowds are only big enough at finals and Origin for the venue anyway. Soccer only has the odd international, mayb one a year. Just leave it as it is, no stadium in sydney could ever draw a 80,000 person crowd weekly, but they do need it for big events like Taylor Swift, Matildas and Origin. While it might not have the same "amenities" as a new stadium, who cares, it can sit empty for most of the year and still work for major events. Also there are more than 5 events per year that can fill it, and the giant screen they added down one end reduced the capacity to 75, 000 or something.
We shouldn't be building stadiums that need renovating every 20 years, leave it as it is until at least 2050.

The challenge is that the stadium is just too big for the type of year in year out usage that Sydney provides. One or two mega events isn't enough, but the flip of that is to host any major tournament you really need a 60-70k seat stadium to make it worth while.
The GWS Giants are another 20-30yrs away from needing a 50k seat stadium, and that is best case. As pointed out in the video, NRL games just don't fill this type of stadium. It's not like AFL where the big 4 teams in Melbourne regularly get 70-80k for standard season games.
Soccer is in a terrible state in the country, and while the Matildas could fill it, the Socceroos would struggle against 95% of opponents to get it half full.
1-2 Origin games isn't enough, and relying on a Taylor Swift style event each year isn't realistic.
Having been to the stadium when it launched and again last year for the Womens World Cup Final, the stadium feels incredibly aged. It's amazing how a stadium barely 30yrs old feels so tired, but expectations for fans experiences these days are much higher.
I think a full state of the art stadium of 50-60k could work, but there is still plenty of chances it would be a partial failure.
