  • @p1mason
    @p1mason Місяць тому +1

    The QSAC proposal makes an idiotic kind of sense..
    A condition of hosting is that Brisbane itself (as the primary host) can provide an existing stadium that can be renovated to provide all the required facilities for a moderate price.
    The fact is, Brisbane isn't exactly flush with stadiums that could fit an Olympic athletics track. And only QSAC can actually be renovated to include all the other amenities for a reasonable price.
    The problem with the Gabba is that it's really a 20,000 seat stadium that has had 35,000 seats shoehorned in. This is impressive in its own way, but it means that where the dressing rooms would normally be, there's seats. Where the media facilities and commentary boxes would normally be, there's seats. Where the security and logistics and medical and administrative facilities would normally be, there's (you guessed it) seats. Retrofitting all these facilities into the existing stadium would mean removing half the existing seats, and rebuilding the stadium to have the same number of seats AND all the other amenities would require a profound (and expensive) reimagining of the whole stadium, from the ground up. It wasn't long after this was revealed that the IOC (via Coates) announced that they were no longer in favour of the Gabba. They gave a nonsense reason for shifting their support to QSAC, but the timing makes it impossible to believe that it was for any reason other than that sheer exorbitant cost of a suitable renovation of the Gabba.

    Regardless of the olympics, I think brissy needs and a good 60-70k stadium. I could agree with some upgrade to Suncorp but its pretty space limited being inner city and their stupid restrictions of 20 events over 30k. If they can remove the restrictions and have unlimited events and have some space (but i think its could be workable to extend it to 60-70k using the current space), then i could agree with a pure suncorp stadium expansion.

    • @farmerooni
      @farmerooni Місяць тому

      One of the problems with upgrading Suncorp is the limited space to house construction equipment. For example, new stadium girders and trusses can't be stored onsite and will need to be transported (in the dead of night to avoid traffic congestion.) Compared to a vacant 'green-field' site, the construction costs are going to be much higher.

    In terms of construction costs - are they really insanely high in SEQ? The other day I was looking at the costing for the new rail line to the Sunshine Coast where the projected cost is between 5 and 7 billion dollars with two new stations and 19km of track. Perth just extended a line with 14km of new track and 3 new stations, and did it for $1.25b. I know there are many other variables involved, but it seems insane that Perth can do things so much cheaper. If costs are that high in Qld, I can kinda see why the gov is so worried about building new stadiums.

    One way to reduce building white elephant venues is to hold basketball preliminaries in Sydney and/or Melbourne in the first week at Qudos Bank Arena & Rod Laver Arena.
    They are better venues than the proposed indoor stadium, which will cost hundreds of millions & be a white elephant after the Games. It also will attract better crowds & share benefits of Olympics to other cities.
    Then hold basketball finals at Brisbane Arena after swimming has concluded. Or build a new aquatic centre & have gymnastics in first week & basketball in second.
    Paris is did something similar by having basketball preliminaries in Lyon & Lille.

    • @electro_sykes
      @electro_sykes Місяць тому +4

      It wont be a white elephant because after the games its planned to replace the old entretainment centre out at boondall which would be reclaimed as part of the boondall wetlands. At least, that was the original plan. Alternatively if they want to save costs, they could also upgrade that tired old entretainment centre and host the olympic basketball there but when its currently in basketball mode, its only got 11, 000 seats which is big for our NBL to fill up, but tiny for the olympics when most basketball venues for the olympics often have 15, 000 - 20, 000 seats. I do get your point though, your idea should also be considered.

      @danielspark101 Місяць тому

      Do we really want to be the city that ends the Olympics? because a cheap games will do that.
      People need to realise that when the Gabba passes its expiration date in 2030, then we have to fork out the billions again for a new stadium. Do it now while we have the funding! Temporary projects shows that labor is a re-active government over pro-active. Anyone who cannot see that is the reason why we're in so much debt

    Either go all in to create legacy sporting infrastructure or cancel now so it gives people 8 years to forget about Brisbane being a wanna be world city. Personally I think it’s a opportunity too good to miss and we should build the sporting infrastructure that can attract world class sporting and entertainment events for years to come, but if people prefer short term bribes by politicians instead, then that is it then.

    Bit confused why they'd play preliminary games in Sydney and Melb for the soccer. Just keep it in QLD. Anyhow.. i dont think it would require the AFL season to pause. They've done the "Gather round" in Adelaide the last few seasons, just do that during the olympics. 1 week covered. Although I haven't looked into this much (yet), it seems the issue we're having is the tug-o-war between wanting to have an impressive Olympics and having a sustainable Olympics. The two are kind of at odds with each other, and it seems nobody wants to pick a side (especially at this time with the election coming up). Either way there'll be a large group of people unhappy with it - either they're wasting too much money on the event, or it'll be embarrassing. No approach will make everyone happy, so in the end, not wanting to make anyone mad, they don't get anything done well.

      Brisbane Live has been in the works well before the Olympics were bid on. For better or worse, it's a public-private construction project. I.e. to be built on public land (Roma St Parklands) with the developer paying all costs, but usage will be privatised (developer collects all ticket fees.)
      The only real shame is the change of location -having it over the existing station would have been great as there's no loss of public space. Plus it's immediately accessible and even walkable from the CBD.
      The new location has it moved to the far north-west corner (where the parkland maintenance yards are.) Which means a net loss in usable parkland space, and a bit of a long walk from the station.

    • @farmerooni
      @farmerooni Місяць тому +2

      You can't refurb a complete turd. QSAC has heaps of issues that only a shit-tonne of money can solve. Consider this:
      The existing seating stands are 40 years old -that's why all the renders for a paltry 40,000 seat stadium feature temporary scaffolding seating.
      It's a garbage location -very far away from the CBD, making it difficult to get to. (If you caught a train, you'd have to get off in the CBD and then take another 20 minute journey by public transport.)
      It's surrounded by a cemetery to the North, a stroad to the East and a 6-lane stroad to the South.
      There's virtually zero public transport: it's just busses (and not even busses on a dedicated bus lane.) And there's no dedicated bus terminal at the venue.
      There's no chance of building a rail spur out to the venue: if it's built it'll cost billions of dollars -just the land resumption alone will be ridiculous.
      The only feasible option is to build a bus-lane spur, which will require demolishing a tonne of koala dwelling forest. Which will still result in mediocre public transport at best -certainly nothing that could handle 40,000 people.

    I'd honestly have the athletics at Carrara, give it a direct train line from Brisbane if need be and have the cricket at the Gabba and AB field. Give the Gabba an upgrade but not a rebuild with a slight increase in capacity, make Suncorp 65k and use it for ceremonies and rugby sevens and football finals. And play some of the BBall prelims in Sydney and Melb so you don't have 2 under used arenas post Olympics. There, sorted!

    • @farmerooni

      I asked that question about hosting the track and field at Carrara in other videos.
      The general consensus is "because it won't be the Brisbane Olympics"
      But also "too far from the athletics village" -which is proposed for Northshore near Hamilton
      In reality, the costs to upgrade Carrara isn't acceptable. Plus letting the Gold Coast have the biggest stadium in SEQ (instead of Brisbane, with it's much higher population) isn't sensible legacy usage.

If Brisbane still wants to host the Olympics, get all the sporting facilities, Public transport and road infrastructure built and operational and make a future bid for the Olympics if Brisbane wants to host the Olympics, an 80,000 seat stadium needs to be built.

    Thanks for the video summary. It is very clear that the current Labor government (which has been in power for years and has done nothing for 3 years to get facilities planned and built as of 2024) is not capable of any visionary thinking for the future. Qld is financially broke due to poor government and bureaucratic management over many years and the only thing keeping Qld going is mining royalties. Queensland has a once in a generation opportunity to put into place world leading legacy facilities for all sports but it appears this is being wasted due to short term thinking by politicians.
