I once met a Luftwaffe pilot who had 118 kills, with most of them being 4-engine bombers. Watching Kortana fight her aircraft is like what watching him must have been like.
No biggie. I once met a Luftwaffe mechanic with 300 kills. Horrible day for the Luftwaffe lol.

Yeah, but that happening was an exception. We've flown hundreds of hours of WW2 DCS combat together and many more times than not that tactic either saves her or ends up putting the pursuing opponent into and tree or dirt. Haha
From this end the orange was definitely much easier to see. It's possible the UA-cam compression is blurring the more similar colours together to a greater extent.

Fox-2! Fox-2!! 😄 In the infantry they teach when you apply camouflage to your face, lighten up what is normally shadowed, or dark, and shade what is normally light.
That was interesting. Somebody's a damned good flyer.... anyway, I seem to recall that the Germans did paint the bottoms of special mission 109's a reddish orange to prevent ground guys from shooting at them ... they were used around aerodromes to protect the 262's on arrival and departure as the allies figured out that that was the best place to shoot the jets down.
Yeah, there was a locale where D9's were tasked w/ protecting the 262's while taking off and landing. Their bottoms were bright red to avoid friendly fire.

Would giving the bombers that camo scheme (and no smoke trails) make them harder to spot and intercept, though?
F knows how I found these but thank F I did. Need some light hearted entertainment. Plus I was an aircraft nerd as a child - great to experience interest again.

I remember reading somewhere in high school (I was a huge WW2-cold war war aviation/space nerd)... the allies did do some experimentation with a kind of active camoflage, where they tried putting lights all over an aircraft to make it blend in with the sky or ground from a distance. they did this because any kind of paint livery camo was basically useless in the air due to it being purely reflective and strongly contrasting with the environment, and thus always stood out from the background (sky or ground) when moving. the emissive camo experiment actually worked to an extent, but between the mass penalty of the lights and the fact that the technology of the day just couldn't color-match the overall environment accurately even at a distance in terms of color intensity and temperature, it was only marginally better, and thus not worth pursuing.
I wonder what could be done today with electroluminescent paints as a light source for LCD panels or covering an aircraft with LEDs, combined with 360 action cameras to feed them.

Personal opinion but in the dogfight I think it was way easier to lose the enemy with the camo skin than the orange one, especially when they are lower than you and blend to ground. At distance with the black pixels long range doesn't seem to be different
Could the red Me 109 aircraft be considered 'Red Barons', and if so, did they have frozen pizzas in the cockpit with them?
Getting rid of regular things like the hexagonal mesh on the camo might be beneficial. It's hard to see from far away but could stand out close in.
So I actually tested about half a dozen variations on this particular theme, and in my own anecdotal testing the hexagonal livery actually performed the best (testing in VR and on my 4K monitor), which is why it was the one I submitted for the experiment.
I fly in VR, and for me it’s not a plane’s cammo that helps me spot an enemy, but relative movement. Personally I can’t see an enemy’s colours until I’m within knife fighting range
I also do VR without my glasses, I can find other planes O.K. but friend or foe is the worst part for me.
Really hard to defend some bombers trailing massive plums of smoke that announce their presence allowing the attackers to pick how they want to attack initially and then use the smoke to provide cover once in the mix. Also, brings into perspective the success of the Tuskegee Airmen during the war.
One of the most effective ways to hide a fighter plane, when there's no radar, is to put an array of light. It ends up blending in with the sky and is pretty much invisible until it's too close to do anything about it. They use that technique very effectively in World War II for fighter planes that were hunting submarines. It allowed them to get close enough so that by the time they heard the Indians it was too late for them to submerge the submarine. They use that in the Pacific Theater and it was incredibly effective

This is not really related to the video at hand or anything, but I've been wondering ever since the B-21 reveal what could happen with the B-2 fleet. Obviously they will need to be retired as bombers, but I was thinking maybe we could find another use for them. What if they could have their bomb bays merged into one large cavity (if that is possible), and have the bomb racks replaced with a large AESA radar, so it acts as a Stealth AWACS? It would be interesting to see a sim to test the practicality of it.
Also, a few changes would need to be made to drive maintenance costs down, like replacing the engines with that of the F-35, replacing the RAM with a more resilient one, and so on.
I fully expect this idea to be totally ridiculous, too expensive, and impractical, but maybe there's a chance of it being useful...
Problem is that there’s are only 21 B-2’s, and they haven’t made any for 25 years.

Curious what would be the idea of a stealth aircraft pumping out huge amounts of radar energy? Wouldn’t that radar signal be used to find the stealth aircraft?

@Grim Reapers it would be good if it would be possible to use the F18s from Canada & Australia being in that they have a mock canopy painted on the underside to make the enemy believe that they were turning in rather than away. I’ve seen this on a UA-cam video where it looked to my eyes at least to work extremely well.
I don't think it ever came into play in this test, but I actually put false canopies on the bottom of the 109 camo livery 😅

The red is harder to see against dark trees; vs the snake skin which is easier to see. That is a trip
the worst thing would be plane that is a black 3.0 or a spectralon white. since making out the edges on that would be quasi impossible.
Target fixation is your biggest issue with protecting bombers. You all have a tendency to gang up on one enemy fighter and leave your bombers unprotected. Throughout multiple videos I've heard people begging for protection or calling out bombers being shot down while there's two or three of the escort fighters angrily chasing somebody miles away. You would be best served by knowing when break off and go back into orbital defense of your bombers

The "high vis" can actually be good camo in the correct conditions. The RAF recon aircraft were painted pink later in the war to disappear into the high altitude mists.
@Kortana, a variation on your idea i believe might be to try alternating between Gloss and Mat finishes, with and without mirrors? i love the concept though and what an excuse to make more vids. cheers GR
That would be very doable with how I produced the livery. It would probably only take me 20 to 30 minutes to complete the adjustments
another variation might be terrain and weather so you can have a chance at braking visual contact during your battles. i found it very hard to keep track of the snake skin more so when cap was looking down and from behind. some angles i could not see you at all had to look for your shadow. cheers
One reason why the Red skin tends to blend with the ground, is that it is of the same intensity as the green. So in a shaded setting, they will look about the brightness. (think same grey if you desaturate the image ( Fun fact - The Addams Family set was painted pink and yellow) )
Color management is a head ache wrapped in a migraine, unless you have to, don't, just don't. It's rabbit holes all the way down.

The reshade is generally looking better, but the colours are still too bold.
Seems to be map-dependant.
I also found the red skin a little bit harder to see at close distance. Probably the high contrast and the fact the gun reticle is also red-ish makes it harder to see what the plane is doing. I think you should try an all light-orange skin, exactly the same color as the reticle… it might give a slight edge during a close dogfight
I still think that a rolling chainsaw formation about 1km above the bomber formation is your best bet for 360 coverage. It's not easy as the speed differential is different when chasing and overtaking the bombers compared with going in the opposite direction meaning that fewer people will be facing backwards but with practice you can keep a good spread. You could even have alternative people taking left and right turns out front so you cover each side. One of the benefits of this is that you have to keep your speed up all of the time.

Interesting. I found the hi-vis harder to see too. The first time one showed, my brain just refused to recognize it. After all, "this is WW2, no one flies rede planes, therefore it can't be there". Tbh, I think relative motion and peripheral vision are what gives the game away.
Wow! Attempt 4 was awesome! Yeah, you failed the primary mission, but the dogfight was excellent. You kept Kortana defensive, never got too greedy, handed off to the cover fighter in a timely matter, re-engaged, kept the pressure on, kept out of each other's way and didn't shoot through each other (too much). Kortana's skills kept her alive far longer than she had any right to hope for. Great to see GR starting to work together instead a free for all! 👏👏👏👏👏👏
I've seen modern videos using this technique where they put an array of Lights on a tank on the horizon and you can see it very clearly and when they turn the lights on it just vanishes but this only works for optical as in eyes
There's all my Grim Reapers, and my beloved Kortana!...lol! I'm kinda fond of the reptile skins myself.
So ahhh, I don't think it makes much of a difference. For a start the bandits were attacking from positions that made it difficult to see them in time. Out of the corner of your eye (colour vision is only in the center of your receptors in the back of your eyeball) colour doesn't make much difference.
With flying escort, I've been told, you fly in positions that help you interdict passes by the bandit, and you don't go off chasing fighters in furballs. You stay close to the bombers.
Lastly, the Mustang really performs at high level. This low level stuff, not so much.
Red is the same tonal space as green which is why some find it harder to make it out.
Mmmmm…… orange, that well known hi vis colour as camo. Coastguard helos are still painted that colour. Only GR does the science though 😗

I don't think the smoke from the bombers helped. The best way to creep up on the bombers would have been to fly into the smoke until you see the bomber, then BLAST IT! Dognammit!
Bombers have contrails at high altitude - These basically said, “Find bombers here!”
@@TraditionalAnglican That was actually the exact purpose of the smoke. I wanted to eliminate any variation in the testing that could have been caused by the axis fighters not having a firm grasp of the allied flight's position.

The pattern needs to be larger so that it is broken up at long distance, the smaller it is the more it just looks like 1 color
This was an impossible task for the defenders as the plane distances are difficult to see at range in DCS till they get in close plus the way it renders the planes is why camo doesn't affect as much as real life. defending is always more difficult even more so when attackers have beacons to make it easier to not only find the bombers but to know exactly where to aim to hit it and hide in the smoke. Great video to watch
This is mostly true from our testing. We did a bunch before testing w/ the Grim Reapers. What we found is unless you know the aggressing pilot quite well, to know their tendencies, it's much harder to spot them as you are flying with a big visible bomber, slowly.
@@brannanjohnson4046 exactly this which is why you had ppl that studied pilots and air wings to learn the tactics to better defend, studying your enemy. Obviously in DCS is easier when it's a group as you can learn more first hand which means you also have to change tactics regularly to keep people on their toes. Love watching the videos and it is interesting to see the tactics and flying styles. Flying low and slow is always dangerous even without the smoke 😂

I wish I could have made the smoke a little thinner, but the smoke still served it purpose of eliminating a variable from the test. (we were testing their ability to spot us, not our ability to spot them. The smoke just guaranteed we ended up in the right place at the right time)
If this was a test of result (shoot down) only I would totally agree. But they designed it to be a test of sighting. But of course all the pilots were hungry to shoot some stuff down still...
Kind of a random question here, but have any of you ever flown against/with Growling Sidewinder? If so, how was your experience? Always curious how much you content creators come across each other in the DCS world. Lol

I do have a major problem with looking about and spotting. Then again I'm using a pretty cheap laptop and an even cheaper Logitech twist stick lol. But anyhow the problem I'm having with direct spotting is I can't. Lol. Maybe some day. But I have fun anyhow pretty new to dcs though so far I am only good at the f14 and f16, ok I digress about what I'm good at with those two planes. The only thing I'm good about in them is getting my a@$ kicked lol but I'm working at it I will get there. Anyhow another excellent video I have watched a crap ton of your videos and enjoy them quite alot thank you.

Cammo is effective in real life! Even "Dazzle" is effective in real life. In some cases "Dazzle" is more effective than conventional cammo. In some cases light bulbs along wing leading edges & on the front of engine cowling rendered an aircraft almost invisible...! What a bright & brilliant idea!
Horrible defending 🤣 should just put machine guns on the bombers... lol
