    I wish they could have made the HMD just lightly bigger to increase the lens size and increase the Edge to edge clarity. It didn't need to be as small as it is. I like my BSB, I just dont love it because of the compromises with glare and Edge to Edge.

    • @DMan-ud6bt
      @DMan-ud6bt Місяць тому +1

      I'd imagine the lens size matches the display size, and I heard the reasoning/excuse was that they were already pushing the boundary of the size uOLED panels they could reliably produce at the time.
      That said, the small FOV, optical clarity issues, and complete lack of quality audio were the reasons I never considered the BSB as an option.
      It always seemed to me that audio was an afterthought for them, and this initial impression video of the final audio strap confirms that. Audio is half of the experience. Poor spatial accuracy, poor audio quality, or bad comfort can kill the experience. Being forced to supply my own audio makes an HMD DOA for me.

    Enjoyed the review.
    Initially, lens glare can be noticeable, but I find it becomes less of an issue over time. After about a week, I hardly noticed it anymore. However, I do sometimes experience blurriness when reading peripheral UI text.
    The face scan feature is exclusive to newer iPhones because it relies on their LiDAR scanning hardware. It's unlikely to become available on phones without that specific technology. I did the scan by visiting an Apple store and using one of their phones.
    I use Sony MX4 headphones with a Bluetooth dongle and find the experience seamless with excellent 360 sound. It would be great if they offered a rigid headstrap version without the audio component, but we'll have to wait and see.

    Your comment about reselling it to someone else with a different IPD that is "close enough" is incorrect. The IPD has to be exactly right. In fact, much of the reason that opinions about the Beyond's visuals vary so widely is because its so sensitive to IPD and also positioning from the face pad. Even 1mm difference will significantly change what areas are sharp and glare characteristics.

Certainly more people would consider to buy it if they can refund or sell it more easily. This VR headset maybe nice, but first it costs as much as the Valve Index - 1000 dollars. Second thing you get no controllers with the headset for that price, just the headset. Third we need base stations to make the tracking to work, no inside out tracking for this VR headset. Fourth item for this headset is it is only custom made for one person to wear it correctly with one IPD setting.
    This headset maybe good for people upgrading from the Valve Index VR headset, but anybody else will have to spend allot of money and I am one of those people.
    I will stick with my Quest 3 for right now and it does everything I need to do my SIM racing games, very good quality, and has inside out tracking - no need external tracking devices. The Quest 3 comes with controllers and is half the price of this Beyond headset.

    Looks great. Only couple of caveats.
    1. Since it's literally fixed to your face the resale value is zero when you're ready to upgrade. They should have an upgrade service to their next headset.
    2. Improve FOV to at least 130 degrees horizontal.
    Maybe they should make the lenses upgradable. 🤔

    • @julianmazzola
      @julianmazzola Місяць тому +2

      I don't think it's possible to get a bigger FoV with displays this tiny at 1 inch across. Other headsets are able to do it with displays 4 times this size, and also by holding them a much greater distance away from your eyes. it will be a long long time before we have big FOV in this form factor

    • @Leynad778
      @Leynad778 Місяць тому +1

      Unless there are no displays in other ratios than 1:1 per eye for VR today, unlike the 16:9 displays of the 8KX, we probably won't see any headsets with wide hFOV without major compromises. Somnium promised almost 130° hFOV with their upcoming VR1, but they are using the same displays as in the Crystal, so Somnium is using a more aggressive distortion profile at the edges to accomplish it and not everybody will like the side-effects of it. I guess the fresnel lenses were more capable of increasing FOV than pancake and aspheric lenses or people didn't notice it as much because it was blurry outside the sweetspot anyway. Quest 3 and Crystal are great in clarity, because the hFOV und vFOV are very close to the display-ratio. If they would've pushed (rather faked) a higher hFOV, the edge-to-edge clarity would suffer or the stereo overlap (like with the wide FOV-lenses of the Crystal) or you get more cromatic aberration.

    Ever since they first showed images of their planned audio strap a very long time ago, my #1 concern was the quality of materials and the audio quality it would have, because it always looked so obviously cheaply made. I am thankful for your honest impressions and review of this overpriced attachment.
    Every single VR HMD should have the type of quality off-ear audio the Index had in 2019. The fact that everyone hasn't either copied it or paid Valve for it is nuts. The "I prefer to use my own" crowd can keep silent, because advocating for less functionality isn't something we need.

    I own one of these and it's the worst headset I've ever had. For one, you will be very lucky to get a perfect fit on your first device. More than likely it will take you a month or two before you get it perfect. I found the stock strap to be very uncomfortable, despite the low weight. For the price, it should come with the better headstrap. The cable is always in the way and often pulls on the left side of the headset. If you end up not liking the headset, they will charge you a $200 restocking fee. Something you don't see at all when you buy the product. They also have a version of the headset they send people that has an adjustable IPD, like WTF?! The glare is awful, the sweet spot is absolutely tiny. You basically have to turn your head, rather than naturally shifting your eyes to see clearly. The ONLY thing that the headset has going for it is the size and weight, and even then it's not very comfortable with the stock strap. Everything else is massively subpar compared to any other headset. For me, personally, the Quest 3 is not only WAY cheaper, but it's better in every other sense. You can buy a battery strap and charging station with it and it would still be less than the Beyond. I ended up paying about $700 total for the Quest 3 with accessories. I get a battery life of 6 hours AND that doesn't include the fact that my battery strap is swappable and came with 2 batteries.

With other headsets I'm always fidgeting to get the comfort/balance/light seal of the gasket just right and it's immersion breaking for me. The IDU unit BSB sends for measuring IPD is very large and heavy and can't be worn for long sessions, I asked them for pictures of it, it looks like a torture device. Mostly agree with all of your points, it's just a matter of preference

It very much depends on what you use it for. I want it for VR racing. I'd be connected anyways and if this device can replace 3x4k monitors without the need of a few graphics cards and produce a better visual quality - I'm in. 3-4x cheaper, less physical space for VR racing and it's super light.
      I have not received it though. I hope it's good lol. at this point, the only thing it needs is good image for me.

      @@FilipLuch - mine isn’t heavy, nor do I have lines on my face, even though I wear it for hours a day for work (Immersed) & exercise (Golf+ & Skytrak+), & recreation (MSFS 2020).

      @@RolandDobbins that's awesome. it is the best VR headset for the money nowadays. They're even loosing money on it. And the applicability is a lot wider.
      I just need mine to be real good at very few things, and Quest 3 is ok at those, but not great.

    It's an overpriced piece of crap. Way too small FOV and a freaking cable.

      @@l420ful too much of a drag to get it working. Any smallest reflection cause tracking jitter. Having to cover entire room every play session just to get meh head tracking is not acceptable. Additionally when you feel like the ipd test is right but you still get eye strain, there is literally no option but having to try another IPD. It's great headset for comfort and has amazing visuals but it's not close to perfect. Edge to edge clarity isn't the best either. Even with lenses as close as possible.

      I agree on the fov but I don't get the deal with people screaming and crying over having cables on anything. Yeah it can be a bit annoying but I personally believe double the weight further from your face with a worse facial interface is far more annoying assuming you set up a tether for the cable.

      @@chadef555The IPD is found through the face scan. Unless they mess up really badly somehow, it shouldn't be wrong.
