The arapaima, pirarucu, or paiche (Arapaima) is a genus of bonytongue native to the Amazon and Essequibo basins in South America. They are the largest freshwater fish of South America, and among the largest freshwater fish in the world. Here I address the top 5 facts you may not have known about this freshwater giant.

Same
Same, the arapaima is my favourite fish in ACNH
I just did some time traveling just for the diys, and just fucking caught this one. So yeah, that’s why I’m here as well
I time travelled to get 3 arapaimas for an arapaima statue
Arapaima's can be easy to get, but if you're not looking in the right place, it can get really difficult
Arapaima also can leap quite far out of the water. Jeremy Wade from River Monsters caught an Arapaima leap center chest. Bugger jabbed him so hard it took a long time to heal. Love River Monsters the show.
I can imagine. I've seen their relatives - the arowana jump extremely far out of the water. Fun fact, I've met Jeremy Wade a couple times! He's exactly the same off camera as he is in the show. Thanks for the comment. - Rob
@@UntamedScience That's pretty cool that you got to meet him. He seems like good people on the show. It's very nice knowing that he is just as he seems. Fake doesn't fly well for me.
Arowana is really interesting too. I also watch the King of DIY, on UA-cam. He has 3 arowana. I however didn't know they lept like Arapaima.
@@UntamedScience You got to meet him?! Dang, I am jealous.
They're an invasive species here in Malaysia. You can find them at Kenyir Lake.
No way! I had no idea. Are they causing problems as well?
@@UntamedScience theres only been sightings in kenyir lake, but the local government are concerned. There have been caught in different states. With that size, there's bound to be an ecological imbalance in the local ecosystem.

@@azmudd1 Gotcha. Thanks Muhammad.
Interesting isn't it. The local here in Sabah just caught one from the local fish pond earlier today.....
Same in indonesia, usually this is the works of wannabe exotic breeders, the fish grow too large for the tank and they dump it in local river, surprisingly they do well in these polluted water
I'm giving my Arapaima fish to Blathers right now! Also, I love nerdy facts!
Same
Just gave mine
I love this fish, it’s just like a look into the past, arapaima is straight out of the Miocene.
Fun fact: i'm scared of fish and arapaima is my biggest fear. My mom is forcing me to watch arapaima videos, now i'm crying while watching this
Now you've overcame your fear. We share the same experience. As soon as i got to the arapaima showcase i got scared and hid behind my mom. what a silly old me!
Tough love

😂 you should see some prehistoric fish, especially xiphactinus, makes today’s fish look like ants compared to those prehistoric titans, also look at the fish that spinosaurus had to live with, there was a massive saw nose fish which could slice through other fish and likely the spinosaurus, largest carnivorous dinosaur, in the Cretaceous.
Arapaima is the closest you’ll ever get to such amazing monsters.
Don’t be a bitch
I just got some pirarucu boots today they’re amazing
SO COOL FISH LOVE IT
WOW! 😮 what this fish!! Amazing.
It's 2021 and the arapaima is considered an invasive species in Florida so they're surviving now they caught one that was 10 ft long here near Okeechobee and they're concerned they're going to take over the water here
My Pirarucu cowboy boots look badass.
one other cool thing about these fish is that their scales are extremely tough, and they sit on an under layer of collagen which is very "rubbery" and so allows the scales to be flexible, meaning they're way less likely to be torn off by an attacking predator (except giant otters because they're basically the water-Honeybadgers of the Amazon basin.)
River Otter doesn't care!
River Otter doesn't care!
excellent video, loved it
Went there last tuesday with ny institution from Chalmers University and we were discussing the Arapaima! Such a small world!!
No way! That's amazing. I love that place. Been there a few dozen times now visiting Jonas. - Rob
I'm much more interested in the situation with Arapaima invading parts where red-belly piranhas dwell. It's been said that they have, OR have developed a taste for piranhas, and this has caused all species of red belly to become extremely aggressive. Any thoughts?
Interesting. What I reallyy want to know is how do they breed, spawn and care for their eggs. 😊
Neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrd! Lol cool vid!
they have bulletproof scales!!
I were ther this summer
My 2 ft arapaima has no red dots on the tail portion, only yellow dots. Can some one help me to make it red tail?
Where this place
May ask you some question ???
What's the difference between Arapaima Male & Female ???
I think the reason they can get that big is because they breathe air.
if you breathe water, not much oxygen is available, & less growth happens.
I live in Tocantins-Brazil and we call them Pirarucu
Makes sense. My sister-in-law is from Manaus-Brazil and they brought me back some meat from the market there (and called it Pirarucu). I know them mostly from Peru, so I know them mainly as the Arapaima. Thanks for the comment kauan. - Rob
@@UntamedScience Gotcha. Cool to hear that you have family here. Keep up the good work
@@kauann4096 Thanks.
Chinese ppl call it the Dragon Fish !
Not correct - Dragon-fish are Arowanas, not Arapaimas. They do share the same territory in the Amazon, but Arapaima are not native to Asia.
Arapaima officially somehow migrated to Florida and are predicted to be invasive over the next year.
Hello friend, good morning ... I would like to know if anyone knows where this big aquarium of arapaima giga is ..... It is somewhere in South America ...... To be able to visit it or where it is .... . ????? I would really appreciate it ... Thanks
You have an aquarium in Sweden or Netherlands (Rotterdam Zoo) where you can see them. Best is to go to the Amazon. They have a center there where they grow them to put them back in the wild. Great spot to see the pink river dolphins as well.. So come over :)
Ummm I'm only looking at this video because I own a pair of pirarucu boots
Breaths air due to change in your earth gravity over time
Terraria players are cheering when they hear these are going extinct
You go through the trouble of telling us that you've researched how it maybe isn't the largest freshwater fish, but don't tell us what's larger?
I love fishing for them in animal crossing lol 😂
They just found a record setter here Soho Philippines
Yes madami atang nagaalaga ng ganyan dito sa bansa natin
Dude i seen one in a river here in florida freaked me out though it was a gar but naw
The pirarucu fish is amazing!!! Have you noticed any sexual dimorphism? have you noticed any external characteristics that make it possible to differentiate the male from the female?
are they omnivorous?
First thing you didn't know about the Arapaima: how to pronounce the word.
looks like a stretch limo beta fish.
It is my dream to live in a riverside laboratory in Peru to domesticate exotic tropical fish and breed them to export just like the Philippine ornamental fish exporters association except it wold be in South America. I know I will never get the funds to do this successfully and many others have probably established something similar but I’d still do it because watching my aquarium during feeding helps me fall asleep. I just really want to observe predatory amazon fish gulping live prey as I recline and doze off.
animal crossing made me an actual big brain right now
How to make your prior knowledge on fish useless: make a Nintendo game about animals -.-
I thought sturgeon is the largest fresh water fish in the world?
So, why do people say this fish is "super deadly"..?
I got some pirarucu boots and now I know why they were so expensive
That’s why I am here. Just bought a pair lol
Largest freshwater fish is the Atlantic Sturgeon isn’t it?
Pira = fish
Pucu = long.
rucu is a derivation of pucu
Pirarucu = long fish
Guarani language
@Antonio Monte I've never heard of Gurarami (with an M). But I speak Guaraní, as I am from Paraguay.
In Guarani,
Red=pytã
Long=pukú
It could be that that type of guaranī spoken in the Amazon used a different word for red.
The closest would be Urukū, which is a red type of seed.. But that's not the color red
Labyrinth organ like bettas?
Try "pepre watra soup" with arapaima or ..... fish I guarantee you it tastes better
Got a few pair of boots made from pirarucu. Sad to here they are going extinct
bruh..
So are stilll on the wAy of being extinct
I'm worried with the growing popularity in the us an arapima could probably survive in florida or texas, peacocks and snakehead love it there I got a feeling they'd do just fine unfortunately.
1:16 so SUSSY😳😳
Did he almost say fuck
Did he just say sum like 13 foot is sum like 440 pounds? Nah no way man
I bought my dad a pair of cowboy boots made of arapaima, was curious to see what it was or how it’s made
not cool karen
Not going extinct now: Some Florida Man introduced them to the USA!
Question: Arapaima can bite human?
Yes but they generally don't bite
White Sturgeon and Alligator Gar are some of the Largest, and Arapaima dont have a long life, they can just live upto 20 years
They are definiteley not going extinct, they're actually considered a "pest" in Bolivia at least. They are predatory fish and are eating all the other smaller species, here they're actually a big problem! Hence why people fish them and don't release them in Bolivia at least. Cheers
Anyone else here after watching this fish knock the guy out after trying to feed it?
എന്റെ കയ്യില് ond tto arapaima😊😘😘
I don't understand how arapaima fit in the rivers of animal crossing new horizons islands
hello it is largest fresh water fish
An arapaima killed my great, great, uncle 😹😹
See now for an unlimited time only this fish is in Florida USA no longer in danger.
Just bought me some awesome boots made from one of these guys.
I love the fish so much I bought a pair of boots made from them since they going extinct maybe I should grab another pair before it’s too late
Dragon chicks for sale. Fire 🔥 splitting guaranteed.
I came here to know more about this fish, but now I also know there's a white guy version of Aziz Ansari
there is always a bigger fish XD
There you go. Always a bigger one. Actually heavier / longer / etc are all ways people claim to have the largest fish.
Its not going extinct. The numbers listed over 170,000 fish minimally. In the late 90's commercial fishing limits were placed on most Amazonian countries. They have thrived for over 20 years now. Do your research before you talk..
Let's start releasing endangered fish back where they come from and stop releasing invasive ones here.
No such thing as a fish. :)
:) ... Huh? - Rob
@@UntamedScience watch this ua-cam.com/video/uhwcEvMJz1Y/v-deo.html it's also the name of one of the best podcasts. :)
THE LARGEST FRESHWATER FISH IS THE MEKONG GIANT CATFISH
Wrong. Beluga sturgeon. Canadian sturgeon. Freshwater stingray. Alligator gar then either Mekong catfish or Aripiama depending what you read.
"Arapaima is endangered" in Florida it is an invasive species and we are currently trying to eradicate it.
you know one doesn't cancel the other right?
They look like giant beta's aka Chinese fighting fish
A little bit...
Stop fishing !!!
I'm here for boots...getting some made out this fish
