    The arapaima, pirarucu, or paiche (Arapaima) is a genus of bonytongue native to the Amazon and Essequibo basins in South America. They are the largest freshwater fish of South America, and among the largest freshwater fish in the world. Here I address the top 5 facts you may not have known about this freshwater giant.

    Arapaima also can leap quite far out of the water. Jeremy Wade from River Monsters caught an Arapaima leap center chest. Bugger jabbed him so hard it took a long time to heal. Love River Monsters the show.

      😂 you should see some prehistoric fish, especially xiphactinus, makes today’s fish look like ants compared to those prehistoric titans, also look at the fish that spinosaurus had to live with, there was a massive saw nose fish which could slice through other fish and likely the spinosaurus, largest carnivorous dinosaur, in the Cretaceous.
      Arapaima is the closest you’ll ever get to such amazing monsters.

    one other cool thing about these fish is that their scales are extremely tough, and they sit on an under layer of collagen which is very "rubbery" and so allows the scales to be flexible, meaning they're way less likely to be torn off by an attacking predator (except giant otters because they're basically the water-Honeybadgers of the Amazon basin.)

    It is my dream to live in a riverside laboratory in Peru to domesticate exotic tropical fish and breed them to export just like the Philippine ornamental fish exporters association except it wold be in South America. I know I will never get the funds to do this successfully and many others have probably established something similar but I’d still do it because watching my aquarium during feeding helps me fall asleep. I just really want to observe predatory amazon fish gulping live prey as I recline and doze off.

      @Antonio Monte I've never heard of Gurarami (with an M). But I speak Guaraní, as I am from Paraguay.
      In Guarani,
      Red=pytã
      Long=pukú
      It could be that that type of guaranī spoken in the Amazon used a different word for red.
      The closest would be Urukū, which is a red type of seed.. But that's not the color red
