  • I made this video because the cotttonwood tree is so incredibly useful and interesting. I wanted to share. It is both a medicine and a wood resource. I'm not tackling the medicines in the fullest detail it needs but I did want to bring it up. I will create another video on how to prepare it and what chemistry is behind it if people want - let me know below.
This particular tree is a black cottonwood tree found in Wyoming. They love the lowland and wet areas and are massive trees. They're also really beneficial trees if you know how to take advantage of many of their qualities. Here we are looking at all the things you can use them for.
    Resin starts at 5:11
Hazen and I wanted to tackle this for our #teamtrees video. We're planting trees this week, but as not all trees are created equally, we wanted to do a quick overview about this particular tree.

Hazen!!! Amazing how I keep coming across him. My very first time I’ve ever heard his name was in the art space. Then, a wilderness show, and now a video about another passion of mine…TREES!!

I use the inner bark of downed cottonwoods for mulch. Low weight, high surface area, lots of shade. Doesn't blow away like leaves. Looks gorgeous.

One thing you may not know, cottonwood was shredded to make excelsor. This was used to pack apples and other fruit in the day for shipping.

I think individually most of us enjoy getting back to nature enjoying being a little lost in the woods. Unfortunately collectively we can't seem to stop destroying those very same woods. I find that very sad.

Cute video, thank you. I'm a budding herbalist (get it?) I've been making Balm of Gilead oil for my creams for years. This year I'm curious about making a tincture though I'm having trouble tracking down much information about tinctures. Do you have any advise or suggestions about where I might learn more? Thank you.

Loving these videos and maybe I missed it at the beginning of the video but can you tell us botanical names when talking about plants? Regionally things are called the same but can be (dangerously) different. Cheers.

A large cotton wood trees just fell on the corner of our house (turns out it was a lot hollow at the bottom and had some bees there), and I was trying to find more info about it and what I might be able to do with the wood (since my hubby said it is “junk wood”, but I know there must be some other good uses for it besides just wasting it). He mentioned they use cotton wood for wood flooring in UPS trucks and cargo ships(? I think) due to it not splintering and that just gets “fuzzy” but just don’t leave it outside to get wet he said. But How would you make the floors out of it and finish it to protect it from spills and scratches? I would also assume the floor of cargo ships and UPS trucks would be getting floors a little bit wet from time to time depending on the weather. Anyone know anything how I might be able to use the wood of the tree and the branches? It is mid Nov over here and fell during a very strong windstorm that happened on the Columbia River Gorge here on the water. It’s amazing to me how big these trees get with all the massive amounts of water that come in as the trees didn’t seem to go very deep (next door there was another smaller cotton wood tree that got up rooted so I was lucky enough to look at its roots. Wish I had taken photos now!!
I’d love to add that it seems like a lot of eagles including the endangered bald eagles as well as owls (like the GREAT HORNED owl - the huge ones!) really seem to love perching in these cotton wood trees and will even build nests in them!! 🦅 🦉 💚💛 Do BEAVERS and or otters love cotton woods also, more so than other trees also? We have periodically had this adorable beaver family come stay here sometimes and I would often find the most adorable walking sticks the next day, custom made by the beavers like they were little Elves working night shift for Santa! 🎅🏻 Well, it felt like Christmas finding these little gifts the next morning anyway!
    ❤️ 🎁🪵 🌈 🧡🖤 🦫
Because of the wildlife apparently seeming to actually LIKE these cotton wood trees (which for just US make us nervous due to them being A lot more brittle and we have quite a few of them!). that’s honestly the main reason we have not wanted to cut any down (leaving some ash, fir, and a couple others behind - just not the more brittle CW!). Yet now we have had 2 fallen naturally either in our backyard or next door (which is Columbia riverfront) . There is a huge one maybe 100ft tall and I really hope that it too, doesn’t blow down in a very strong wind storm and land on our house or worse, any people or dogs who live here. I don’t think there are any eagles or owls in these trees now but I’m unsure why, maybe they know winter is a more risky time to be perched in them so they chose a birch or fir tree instead?

I'm so allergic to cottonwood that when the fluff touches the whites of my eye they blister! In spite of that I have zero allergic reaction to licking my lips even after putting chapstick on that I made with balm of Gilead. I can use it anywhere even on sores and it helps them but it won't give me an allergic reaction. But I'm very allergic to the trees on a skin test and to the cottonwood fluff in my eyes

I don't know about the wild, but cottonwood sucks in our area. It stinks like cat urine and the fluff chokes our AC condencers. We even have to scrape it off our window screens.

Wow how tall do they get? I lived in Arizona and we had eucalyptus trees that were like 300 ft tall. We'd have to have them chop down below 100 ft I think according to City ordinances when I was a kid. After having a couple of them struck by lightning in our yard and falling over she finally agreed to pay to have someone cut it part way down.
