The brotherhood elder quest also wouldn’t be that great lore wise. I don’t think Elders are replaced via battle to the death. In New Vegas, if an Elder breaks a major rule like the Chains that Binds then they’re demoted to knight while the head paladin takes their place no? If not, I think the council of Elders back in California decide on the next Elder like how Arther replaces Lyons.
What if Danse IS Harkness? After re-discovering he is a synth, you would think that he would want another memory wipe and more reconstructive surgery right?
I kinda like that idea, plus he would have good reason to hate the Institute. Perhaps that could be so strongly imbedded in his mind that he joined a faction that would oppose his former masters.
I liked how he said " believe it or not" like 20 sec or so before he starts talking about how harkness is the head of security in diamond city soo.. I guess i should say "no i dont believe u" haha i love u videos men keep it up
Man, I can never bring myself to join the Brotherhood. Every time I start a playthrough, I'm like, okay, join the BoS this time, let's give it a go. Then I get to Cambridge Police Station, Knight Rhys starts running his f***ing mouth, and next thing I know I'm an enemy of the Brotherhood again.
My real question about Paladin Danse is, when was he “switched” for a synth? It couldn’t be when he was a child, because synths don’t age and neither when he was a regular guy back in DC. My theory is that he was swap in his journey to the Cambridge police station.
Brilliant theory. But I feel that he's been a synth for a lot longer. Perhaps since before he joined the BOS (unless he was born into it) In the end, who knows for certain..
@@lordvoldemortsrighthanddea1740 isn't there somewhere in the speech that danse says something reminds him of rivet city, where the brotherhood found him
The answer is none of the above. He has all his memories, people know him. The institute doesn't swap people who don't know they're synths, only those that do so they can have an agent. Planting danse, the best solider there arguably, as they're own enemy seems like a terrible idea. Not to mention the institute had him listed as escaped on their database. A more likely explanation is that he escaped long ago, the railroad found him, wiped his mind and sent him to DC where he met Cutler when he moved into rivet city. They started thier junk stand, he and Cutler join up. And he rises to the rank of paladin to only return to the commonwealth and find out he's a synth.
Yep people don't seem to get this. The BOS really aren't good people at all Lyons is an anomaly. Maxson is far closer to what the BOS is supposed to be. Though even his version isn't super accurate.
There's a high degree of probability that Pally Danse, like everyone who spends more than a cup of coffee in Rivet City, totally hates Seagrave Holmes (Dude is never in his damn shop, just wanders around that rusty ass boat like "heeey guys, anybody wanna hang out? No?")
I thought it was only the Eastcoast Brotherhood of Steel that drifted away from the more Isolationist behaviors. Meanwhile the Westcoast BoS factions found in California and the Mojave Wasteland are still stuck to their old routes of not interacting with the outside world.
If anything the Eastcoast BoS seem to be more in line with Roger Maxson's original mission for the order. Maybe not a full-blown rediscovery, but in comparison to the hermits running the Chapters in the Westcoast? They're doing a lot better for themselves. Owyn Lyons and Arthur Maxson both got the Eastcoast Chapter in a much stronger position with their approach to leadership. From Owyn Lyons getting the chapter to abandon tradition when needed, to Arthur Maxson managing to make the compromises needed to keep the former Outcasts, the hard-liners and native-born members of the Chapter united.
I feel like you're forgetting the part about Danse's memories of the Capital Wasteland being part of his childhood. Synths can't "grow up." The way more interesting story (to me at least) is that Danse was replaced by a synth after coming in contact with the sole survivor, as a way for the Institute to keep an eye on what was happening in the Commonwealth and the BoS.
My idea is that danse was prob one of the og gen 3 synths like a prototype where they made them like a normal human that could age to a certain extent. But a child questions everything so he easily broke away and the institute decided to not make child stage synths and go with adults instead.
After the events of fallout 3, harkeness mind wipes himself and gets more surgery creating the new identify of Danse. He still has a few vague memories from his time on rivet City but joins the brotherhood under his new identify to fight back against the institute subconsciously! Thoughts??

I met Macready and Maxson as kids in Fallout 3... So I wonder if Danse was the synth who ran away in Fallout 3 that you could've helped the institute find. Apparently this Synth was given a new face and everything. It's also funny that the Synth lost by the Institute in Fallout 3 is a Courser, meaning he had combat experience. So this could mean that Danse was that rogue Courser in Fallout 3.
There’s a mod that allows you to replace Maxson called “the Danse dilemma” but if you replace him you’ll be referred to as “knight” “paladin” or “sentinel” instead of elder. And if you have this mod you can say the railroad are “allies” and you can spare them, but I’m pretty sure they still hate you if you side with the BOS.
I've honestly loves the bos the moment I laid eyes on them in fallout 3 and I really love their lore and I love this video because I got to learn more about my favorite faction from any fallout game
The institute has all this technology, and yet they cant remotely wipe a synth or hijack it? All these missing synths dont have tracker chips in them or anything? I never understood how a society more advanced than anything else ever seen cant do something so basic. I'm sure it's just a plot hole.
the normal gen 3 synths were made to look exactly like a human and even believe so to make it easier to infiltrate camps or important locations for long periods or switch a real human with a synth.the only way to tell if one is really a synth is by doing a full autopsy on the corpse to look for parts which are hidden inside, there cant be a remote control because it would be detectible(radio signal probably as the institute is using the classic radio signal),althought each synth has a unique code/name to "turn them off?" it can only be activated by being there and saying it to them.coursers on the other hand do transmit a signal back and forth to the institute to pin point their locations and teleport around and are detectible as we hunt one,in one of the quests.i want to note here that chase from acadia is a courser synth and the only female one too(maybe a prototype?not much info is given)but there hasnt been any attempt from the institute to bring her back or even destroy her,now thats a plot hole :P
badwolf korko I know this is a bit late but it’s pretty much stated in game that the Institutes teleporter, being reliant on a radio transmitter, is limited to the Commonwealth.
speaking of which, the whole "synths are indistinguishable from humans" thingy is bs. a single x-ray can reveal that bigass synth component in their head.
I wish that had originally been the fourth option for that quest, wow. It does get annoying that every faction seems to let you become leader, but that would've been a neat choice
It's interesting to hear that the BOS was initially intended to be similar to the children of atom considering I remember seeing a description on a loading screen in fallout 4 explaining that the origins of the BOS was actually the remanants of the U.S. military. I also saw another loading screen description that stated that X-01 power armor was created post-war by what remained of the U.S. military and that the cosmetic design of it's appearance was inspired by the cosmetic appearance of mirelurks. Personally I prefer to run around in the T-60 power armor once I have fully upgraded all it's capabilities and created my desired mods for it. Usually consisting of the jump-jet backpack and a few others.
You know, you'd think a technologically advanced faction like the Institute would be smart enough to put a tracking chip in their Synths. I've always found that absolutely ridiculous. The whole railroad institute thing just feels so unbelievable because of that. I can put a chip in my dog and track it to the otherside of the planet and the Institute, the most advanced humans in history to our knowledge can't? I mean I understand the GPS system is probably destroyed by this point but come on. They can teleport. That's practically magic.
I honestly didn’t know any of this! I’ve currently been playing all sides to my advantage to scour the wasteland in peace, and haven’t taken Danse anywhere because I can’t stand the sound of power armor. 😅
I watched a cut content vid yesterday and it showed a cut brotherhood of steel ending where you can actually watch maxson and danse battle to the death for the title of elder
"How's development going guys?" *"Oh really good were just starting to work on the really interesting quests and stuff"* "Thats great..but I'm gonna need you to stop all that, its release time!"
I think it’s pretty cool Maxon was sent to the Citadel at an early age to squire under Elder Lyons, iirc there’s a computer terminal message where Lyons mentions him and how gifted the boy is.
Not gonna lie, as militant and black-and-white as the BoS is, most of us would join in a heartbeat if they could. The quality of life they get compared to literally everyone else is huge. You get healthcare, comradery, and purpose. Not to mention access to badass weaponry and training. Despite their flaws, their commitment to their ideals help conserve their resources and protect their soldiers. Its hard to admit it, but Lyon's brotherhood would die off rapidly and be unable to replace their equipment, let alone their personnel, if they kept trying to save everybody.
IIRC, the Brotherhood takeover thing is one of the largest individual additions to the CRF mod. (For those who don't know what I'm talking about, there is a very popular mod called the Cutting Room Floor mod, which restores and finishes a huge pile of content that never made it into the game for one reason or another. This mod is HUGE, and can be really hard to get running properly on smaller systems like consoles, but it adds a lot of new stuff. Locations, creatures, weapons, armour, NPCs, dialogue, quests, and more)
I've had the mod to restore the "danse dilemma" during blind betrayal... and I felt like it was a better option than the other 3 available options we have in vanilla... but I only rarely take the position myself... I usually give it to Danse as he is an eternal embodiment of the BoS codex
Honestly I wonder if the Lone Wanderer is somewhere on the Prydwen or off doing something in the commonwealth during the events of Fallout 4. Maybe they invaded the institute with us, or maybe they stayed in the capital wastleland with BoS still stationed there. My headcanon is that my Lone Wanderer is in the Commonwealth, Wazer Wifle in hand, sporting a dusty suit of T-45, reconning the wastes like he always has. Recovering tech, retrieving viable samples, and scrounging around for old technical data.
I love that a fictional commanding officer cared more for his fictional troops' mental health than my actual CO ever cared about mine.... Super reassuring for the state of our military...

4:35 You can't kill Arthur because Danse will turn hostile and attack you. (Even leaving the area and coming back later, Danse will always be hostile.)
Credit to my best friend for finding this thing that doesn't add up in fallout. If you travel to the last place in Kellogg's memory and listen to what travis yes travis is saying on the radio, about piper's paper about mcdunna and do the math of the ages people would be things don't add up, if that was really Shaun in kellogs memory that would at least make piper and travis very old characters at least as old as Shaun was and will be present day in fallout. It's my friends theory that that's not actually shaun in Kellog's memory, but synth shaun. Edit: to be more specific, how could piper and travis be around when shaun was a kid in diamond city, if he is a 60 year old man, it doesn't add up
It is in fact synth Shaun in that part of the memory Kellogg's dialog and other dialog throughout that part gives it away plus I think its mentioned in a terminal somewhere as well but unsure of that one.
@@altair7889 I'm pretty sure he's also wearing the same outfit in the memory and when you meet him in the institute so it's definitely just synth Shawn with Kellogg in diamond city
I always assumed Maxon put so much emphasis on the mental stability so that it'd be easier to detect synths. Someone suddenly changes drastically and it sticks out like a sore thumb. If everyone is a little off-kilter from all of the isolation and missions, some odd behaviors can blend in - people might no notice. The testing removes ambiguity between when someone is a synth and when someone is just going through the goings on. Basically, they're combing over everything a person is going through in order to keep everyone mentally well. They're treating signs of problems like physical things such as fever... which is a really good way of getting people going along with routinely checking-in to see if they're still them. But I mean, this also means that anyone showing signs of unusual behavior are being openly examined. It probably works better if people generally don't consider it a synth test. A synth infiltrating may not realize that's kinda what it is. Or at least it would be very useful in that regard. I mean, I'm taking creative license here, but given how paranoid Maxon is, I could see him wanting to focus on mental health with that in mind.
The information given in the last couple of minutes is contradictory, Harkness as head of Security in Diamond City? You meant to say: Rivet City and before that you also mention that Danse got his memory wiped by the Institute, you meant to say: Railroad.
It's so frustrating to know the BOS line was so close to being potentially really great. The idea of Dance being a Synth who is loyal because has this gut feeling of hating the institute but not knowing why... If they had taken the next step with you being elder and allowed you to restore the ideals of Lyons the whole becoming elder would have been awesome. Being able to align the BOS with the Minutemen and Diamond City would have made their story SO much better. (or hell if they were feeling particularly new vegasy maybe even a whole other very hard quest path to convince the BOS to ally with the institute since the Gen 3s resolve the whole 'insular coven reproductive problem, potentially setting the brotherhood up as major antagonists for a future game...)
Fun fact: The colors of the armor worn by paladins and knights like Danse are the same as those used by the BoS Outcasts in Fallout 3, where they employed those reddish tones. We know that Maxon managed to somehow unify both factions, but within the Brotherhood, we see the discontent of some soldiers due to the more aggressive approach. Even the wandering scribe, who you can find as one of the recruitable merchants, mentions that he left the faction when Maxon took power, disappointed by his more selfish viewpoint. This means that the BoS we see in Fallout 4 is really the faction in its purest form. This would explain why almost everyone in the Commonwealth hates the BoS, even though they were the good guys in Fallout 3. It's simply not the same Brotherhood as before.
Actually, the questline I found was where Danse challenges Maxon for Elder, not the sole survivor challenging Maxon. There's even a mod to restore some of this back into the game from cut content.
Making the player the BoS elder would just be dumb. Glad they cut that... it doesn't work with how the Brotherhood is known to work, in addition to it being a full-time job that wouldn't work for the player character to take on.
An interesting aspect of what might've been the original vision for the Brotherhood is that they may not have been intended to have such a long stay in the narrative as they've had. The western canon definitely shows them paying the consequences for never allowing outsiders into their cause by the time New Vegas happens, as the New California Republic overpowered them at HELIOS One simply by outnumbering them, forcing what was left of the Mojave chapter into hiding. Given how often the Brotherhood pits itself against other factions and their strict anti-outsider policy, their days are numbered. I figure the East Coast only got as strong as it was because of Lyons' more lenient leadership before Maxson took over.
There are modders that have fully re-enabled the “become elder of the brotherhood” quest line, along with the option for danse to take over as the elder I believe. In addition, there are also mods that fix danse, since him no longer responding to you or having any dialogue after the brotherhood gets destroyed is a bug that can be undone and he will function the way he is supposed to.
In spite of its many flaws, i love how FO4 portrays the Brotherhood: they have finally resolved the old dispute of past entries regarding their mission and accepting outsiders, it does indeed feel like a breath of fresh air for the faction. Seeing the Brotherhood in full power at least once is really nice, regardless of how much one symphatizes with their views.

The institute has always been my go to faction. I couldn’t agree with bos mission. I was okay with them up until they made me start forcing settlements to supply them for free. In my mind that makes them an occupying force trying to take over the commonwealth. At least the institute left the majority of the settlements alone and only replaced a few individuals so that they could keep tabs on the outside world. The institute is the best hope for humanity’s future in fallout.
The thing about the institute is they kidnap, murder, and replace people with synths. The BoS would be better in the long run, if they could cut out the bigotry towards non humans and actually start rebuilding society. Civilization needs industry, agriculture, clean water, and manpower. They need to focus on these things, or they wont remain relevant into the future. The NCR managed to defeat the West Coast chapters, and if the East Coast wants to remain in power, they need to work on helping others and recruiting. Establishing a justice system would be another big thing. The institute, they have no desire to help anyone but themselves.
What about the minutemen? A small militarised group solely dedicated to helping people, open to everyone who wishes to share that mission, and who put visible action behind their words?

7:29 from what I can tell, it also goes against the narrative of the game. In New Vegas, the database will, after completing parts of the quest to change the elder of the BoS, show the times an elder was dismissed and how to dismiss an elder, I remember the chain that binds (which gets the elder dismissed) but know that challenging the elder is not one.
I can understand why Maxson is so deadset on making sure his soldiers are mentally sound. If they aren't, that could cause issues in the battlefield. Maintaining mental health is JUST AS if not more important then maintaining physical health.
i think the quest was scrapped because arthur maxson is actually a direct descendant of roger maxson, the founder father of the brotherhood of steel. Before east coast capital expedition of the brotherhood, all member of the brotherhood have to be "born" brotherhood (like you are member of the brotherhood because your father was a scribe and your mother was a paladin), it is called "brotherhood" for a reason. no one outside in the wasteland can join the brotherhood, and also in the brotherhood there is a council of elders, sort of an inner circle in the brotherhood leadership, so the actual elder on top (lets just say; arthur maxson) cannot just make a decision or doing whatever he wants without the council of elders consent and/or agreement. So yeah, if the sole survivor, a wasteland scavver with a mongrel dog becoming the elder of the brotherhood just because he/she powering up liberty prime and murdered arthur, it just dont fit in the fallout lore, fallout lore that already losing consistency by bethesda in fallout 4 that is.

In New Vegas, if an Elder breaks a major rule like the Chains that Binds then they’re demoted to knight while the head paladin takes their place no? If not, I think the council of Elders back in California decide on the next Elder like how Arther replaces Lyons.

That first fact was so wholesome I might actually do a BoS playthrough.

@Aron Travis agreed.
@@lordvoldemortsrighthanddea1740 isn't there somewhere in the speech that danse says something reminds him of rivet city, where the brotherhood found him
or The Institute had a synth prototype (which "is born" like a baby and can grow old) that worked, but that synth rebelled, in this case, Danse.
I think it was just a failed plot twist by Bethesda in order to give the player a difficult decision to make lol
The fo3 brotherhood was actually ironically the real outcasts of the brotherhood
Yep people don't seem to get this. The BOS really aren't good people at all Lyons is an anomaly. Maxson is far closer to what the BOS is supposed to be. Though even his version isn't super accurate.

There's a possibility that Danse has at least passed by the Lone Wanderer
There's a high degree of probability that Pally Danse, like everyone who spends more than a cup of coffee in Rivet City, totally hates Seagrave Holmes
(Dude is never in his damn shop, just wanders around that rusty ass boat like "heeey guys, anybody wanna hang out? No?")
I thought it was only the Eastcoast Brotherhood of Steel that drifted away from the more Isolationist behaviors. Meanwhile the Westcoast BoS factions found in California and the Mojave Wasteland are still stuck to their old routes of not interacting with the outside world.
West Coast is like literally the only chapter that still hold it isolationist idea
To be Fair, The Mojave Chapter would've been cut to shreds by the NCR if they came up to the Surface too much.
One actually helps the world the other hides in a bunker after losing to people who didn’t even have power armor
"Hiding in a hole, waiting for everyone else to die."
Synths can't "grow up."
The way more interesting story (to me at least) is that Danse was replaced by a synth after coming in contact with the sole survivor, as a way for the Institute to keep an eye on what was happening in the Commonwealth and the BoS.
The Railroad can reprogram memories - including creating vague childhood memories. But your idea makes sense as well and would be a great story.
My idea is that danse was prob one of the og gen 3 synths like a prototype where they made them like a normal human that could age to a certain extent. But a child questions everything so he easily broke away and the institute decided to not make child stage synths and go with adults instead.
But when you kill Danse at Cambridge PS He has a synth component on him
After the events of fallout 3, harkeness mind wipes himself and gets more surgery creating the new identify of Danse.
He still has a few vague memories from his time on rivet City but joins the brotherhood under his new identify to fight back against the institute subconsciously!

I don't think remote controls exist in the Fallout universe.
I feel like you just are uninformed about this topic

I know this is a bit late but it’s pretty much stated in game that the Institutes teleporter, being reliant on a radio transmitter, is limited to the Commonwealth.
speaking of which, the whole "synths are indistinguishable from humans" thingy is bs. a single x-ray can reveal that bigass synth component in their head.
I wish that had originally been the fourth option for that quest, wow. It does get annoying that every faction seems to let you become leader, but that would've been a neat choice
"... Yes 1988" yeah mang, I played it on my Commodore 64. Pretty sure I got it on a 5 & 1/4 at fedco, but I might be misremembering.
I still can't forgive the Brotherhood for forgetting or ignoring the lone wanderer
that's probably because he's been dead for quite a while now
It’s been only a decade and the lone wanderer sustained a huge profit and good for the CW Bc of project purity
Bullshit ... bullshit never changes
They do track their synths escaped synths have these subroutines disabled or removed in many different ways
The tracking chip would make it possible to deduce that it's a synth because of radio waves.
I honestly didn’t know any of this! I’ve currently been playing all sides to my advantage to scour the wasteland in peace, and haven’t taken Danse anywhere because I can’t stand the sound of power armor. 😅

All I remember is reading his stupid poetry on his terminal. And bullying him
Not gonna lie, as militant and black-and-white as the BoS is, most of us would join in a heartbeat if they could.
Locations, creatures, weapons, armour, NPCs, dialogue, quests, and more)
"But not even a faction this prominent was spared Bethesda's incredible attention to detail."
Heh..... heh heh
at first I was like "why is youtube recommending me this" but now after 8 videos I understand that i NEEDED it
I've had the mod to restore the "danse dilemma" during blind betrayal... and I felt like it was a better option than the other 3 available options we have in vanilla... but I only rarely take the position myself... I usually give it to Danse as he is an eternal embodiment of the BoS codex

That’s why I think father is bullshitting you and he wasn’t the one taken

10:32 Imagine this guys knocking on your door yelling FIB open up

7:55 What? I always thought they were modeled after WHK40 space marines!
Same
Actually, the questline I found was where Danse challenges Maxon for Elder, not the sole survivor challenging Maxon. There's even a mod to restore some of this back into the game from cut content.
Making the player the BoS elder would just be dumb. Glad they cut that... it doesn't work with how the Brotherhood is known to work, in addition to it being a full-time job that wouldn't work for the player character to take on.
Now I am imagining the BOS to be something like the imperium of man from warhammer
What is name of mods for PS4
The only reason I watch Nate is cause I can’t be bothered finding these secrets myself
Maxson holds the original ideals of the founding members of The Brotherhood of Steel. He's also directly descended from one of the founding members.

7:29 from what I can tell, it also goes against the narrative of the game.
“As Elder of this contingency, I will bring Order, Peace and Stability to my new Empire”
“walking beacons of badassery” 😂😤
I personally think dense was replaced at around the middle of his quest line
„Betheadas attention to detail.“ yeah with such good dialogue options like
