What Do Loral Hops Taste Like? SMaSH Beer Experiment

  • Loral hops this week fill in for another SMaSH brew taste test.
Mike swears he was getting some bit of fruit and maybe something tropical out of these hops. The reality is the commercial descriptor for these hops are really more focused on the prior Nobel like character of these hops.
This hop has a subtle spice not which was less intense than a Norther Brewer or Liberty hop. That spice was there nonetheless.
This hop was subtle all around. The bittering was slightly pithy in the palate but it didn't linger for too long.
Overall this hop has some interesting character but it seems like it would be another real good candidate as a blending hop. Something to be used to add balance to otherwise juicy, fruity hops.
Have you worked with Loral Hops yet? Let us know in the comments below.

Just subbed Loral in my 4.7% Belgian rhubarb blond ale. Paired with a pinch of Indian coriander. Tart, lemony, slightly fruity/estery and dry. A great brew i keep on tap all summer long.

I have recently had this in a cream ale and it was top notch. Seriously the best cream ale I've had.

I can’t find any strong sources for this but.. The name Loral seems to just be a combination of the words/descriptors lemon(y) and floral. So I would think you’d pronounce it just like floral but without the “f.” Cheers guys. Great info.

Cool. I have a couple oh-zees of Loral cryo pellets in my freezer and I'm currently drinking a "Float" DDH DIPA from Definitive Brewing Co...dry hopped with Citra, Loral cryo pellets, and Simcoe. Mind blown! Cheers!
