wish i had known this months ago!! over half my pieces were breaking, now i have stopped using sculpy 3 which in my opinion is rubbish apart from some of their colours being pretty. i have switched to premo, souffle, du kit ,cos clay and the spotlight brand called crafters choice. I also bake from cold for 1 hour minumim and leave my piecec in my wee toaster oven till completly cold. I tent with tin foil to stop burning...I dont recommend using your food oven as all these clays let off fumes!! FYI, something to think about, I have 3 monthly blood tests for health issues and we discovered polymers in my test results. i use poly clays on most days.
Yes, Sculpey III is definitely not great for thin pieces like jewellery. Sounds like you’ve got your baking formula down now! It definitely takes a bit of testing to get it right for your oven 😊
Fantastic video! This is the hardest part for me. I have two thermometers, one for each side of the oven. I have found so far that I need to preheat the oven way longer, like for 30 minutes, in order for the temperature to even out.
I hadn’t thought of a longer preheat, although if I have pieces that ended up thicker and others thinner because I plan to layer them, I put the thicker ones toward the back of the oven.
Thank you ladies, for all of your content! I have only recently come across your channel, and I have found it hugely helpful, entertaining and informative. I also want to give a shout out to your website. I have looked at sooo many polymer clay cutter websites and none of them are as seamless and easy to use as yours. Everything is cohesive and easy to navigate and I love love love that you have photographs of the cutter sizes as earrings on an actual person! Nobody else does that! I love it, did I mention that?! :) Looking forward to more wonderful content. Cheers! Jo
Hi Jo! What lovely feedback, thank you! It is our pleasure! When I started polymer clay I bought cutters a few times that I thought would be stud size and they were the size of my palm 😂 so when we started MyClayCo I vowed to have earring reference pics so other clay jewellery makers could avoid that ☺️ thank you for noticing it and taking the time to mention it, it does take a bit of extra effort so I’m so glad you find it helpful ❤️🥰 And thank you for enjoying our content! ☺️✨
Yes, a full preheat is as important here as for food prep. I'm the cook at my mouse but not a lady. My wife calls me "Hair Ball" in reference to the fur on my face.:) My impatience is the enemy of my baking for food and clay . The long preheat means you actually know the temp at which the piece began baking
Very useful, thanks. an oven thermometer is a very useful thing . Toaster ovens temps tend to vary quite a bit. My regular gas oven has a couple of hot spots that I need to pay attention to. Right now I use a cookie tray with parchment paper but plan to get a glossy ceramic tile.
@@myclayco Yeah, I am the cook at our house and used to do a lot of baking. Cheese cake and a number of things are really affected by the hot spots and temp variations. Ergo the usefulness of s decent in oven thermometer.. I was very surprised by the temp variations I found in my gas oven. The electric toaster oven is worse. I seem to enjoy obsessing over such things just for something to do. It's silly but it is a cheap obsession that keeps me off the streets and out of the opium dens. :) You just can't find a good opium den these days.
This is a great video! I frequently leave thing in my oven for hours at a time 😅 So long as it's 130° it just won't burn! Still good to cover things that are made from translucent.
Thank you for providing this great tutorial.. I’ve often wondered if my clay pieces should be bendy or not.. I thought perhaps I wasn’t baking them long enough!
Yep, you can bake in your house oven, polymer clay is non-toxic. Some aren’t comfortable with this though, so prefer to bake in a seperate oven 😊 I guess it’s kind of like how some people don’t like to store food in plastic containers and instead store in glass/stoneware, you do what you’re comfortable with 😊
Yes, fan forced ovens are normally hotter though so you may need to turn it down a little. An oven thermometer will definitely help with getting the right temp!
It depends on what brands you are using so you may have to experiment a little. We use mostly Sculpey Premo/Soufflé and Cernit. Sculpey baking temp is 130c and the Cernit directions say 110-130, we bake them both at 130c and often mix them 😊
Can I say as a neurodivergent person your videos are so incredibly helpful and easy to follow . I greatly appreciate the verbal directions with examples as a visual learner . Thank you! ☺️

Get well soon. May I know what kind of health problem did polymer clay cause? Did this happen to you because of baking?

Thank you! That is such a good tip, it is not uncommon for ovens to heat up differently on each side. Thank you for sharing!
YES, the long preheat is exactly what you need to deal with those temp variations. Irritating but it helps a lot.

These tips are super helpful. Thank you. I'm just starting out on my clay journey and need all the tips I can get.
Hope you ladies have a fab day ❤
Our pleasure! You are going to love it and experimenting is half the fun! Enjoy the journey! ☺️

Yes, you are right, ovens can be so temperamental! Sounds like you’ve gotten to know yours well!

Plus having a dedicated lil toaster oven means once I found the right temp, I just never move the knob! 😂
Haha you are the same as me! 👯♀️
This is such an amazing and informative video. Thank you
My pleasure, so glad you found it helpful!
Thank you for providing this great tutorial.. I’ve often wondered if my clay pieces should be bendy or not.. I thought perhaps I wasn’t baking them long enough!
You are so welcome! It is a common question people ask, sounds like you’ve got them baking perfectly!
Very helpful, thank you ❤
My pleasure!☺️
Thanks for the very useful tips, can we bake in a convection oven
Yes you can 😊 we use regular ovens but I know of other polymer clay artists that use convection ovens
I use a portable oven from Kmart. Has been excellent for all clays. Thank you for all of this info
My pleasure! Oh good to know that the Kmart ones work alright! Gotta love Kmart ☺️
What brand did you get
Thanks so much. This was really great. I may even be brave enough to begin 😅🎉
Our pleasure! All you have to do is start 😉 We are always here to answer any questions and the polymer Clay community is super helpful 😊
Gran video! De cuántos milimetros de espesor recomiendas que sean los aretes?
We normally do them 2-3mm 😊
@@myclayco thanks! 🫶🏻
Thank you so much
Our pleasure! 🥰
In the house oven? I thought I had to use a toaster oven dedicated only to polymer clay because of the plastic fumes. Please clarify.
Yep, you can bake in your house oven, polymer clay is non-toxic. My oven at home is a fan oven is this ok? Have now ordered a thermometer as my items were brittle and broke easily 👍
Yes, fan forced ovens are normally hotter though so you may need to turn it down a little. An oven thermometer will definitely help with getting the right temp!
What if you used two different clays to make a project and it has two different baking times?
This is a question I have as well.

@@myclayco yeah might have to do some experimenting. Thank you!
I was taught when mixing brands that have different baking Temps, bake at the highest temp.
Can polymer crumble when it is old? I have polymer that is a year old
As in uncured clay? Not usually but it could just be that it needs a little extra conditioning or some clay softener 😊
