Dear Kings and Generals, Thank you so much for make an video on one of the Great Empire of all time In History. As I am fan of Achaemenid Empire it was sweet treat.
Cassandane was a Persian noblewoman and the "dearly loved" wife of Cyrus the Great. Cyrus the Great and Cassandane were known to love each other very much. Cassandane said that she found it more bitter to leave Cyrus than to depart her life. Cyrus loved his Persian Queen Cassandane dearly and when she died the entire empire observed a great mourning. Cyrus never recovered from the grief of losing her and stayed inactive for nearly a decade after her death. Cyrus the Great wrote the first Human Rights Charter. United Nations uses the Cyrus Cylinder as a pillar of the earliest declaration of human rights.
In all sources, Cyrus the Great is described as a good king. The great historians such as Will Durant, Richard N. Frye, Arthur Upham Pope, Professor Patrick Hunt, Walther Hinz, Heidemarie Koch, Charles Freeman, etc, etc, and the Great western philosophers, such as Hegel, Nietzsche, etc, etc, all respected and praised Cyrus the Great, the Persian empire and Persia. Xenophon respected and praised Persia and Cyrus the Great. " Many historians as well as writers on human rights, have supported the interpretation of the Cyrus Cylinder as a human rights charter. " Cyropaedia by Xenophon is about Cyrus the Great of Persia/Iran, the founder of the Persian Achaemenid Empire. The Cyropaedia has been consulted as a standard reference of statesmanship by a number of prominent leaders in world history. Many Classical and Western statesmen knew well of Cyrus and his adaptive policies of governance by way of the Cyropaedia.
Thank you for making a video on Cyrus the Great! Very much appreciated. However, the portion covering Cyrus's early life was based on the mythical story told by the Greeks, not the historical account. Also, the battles weren't covered in great depth and detail like the videos for other rulers such as Alexander, Julius Caesar, etc... Additionally, there wasn't much mentioned about the genius administrative system he laid the foundations for which was based on a religious tolerance unlike any other empire that preceded it.
If he could even comprehend his legacy, it would blow his mind. He is remembered despite the literal rise and fall of dozens of empires, and the passage of thousands of years. If you told him"One day, after hundreds of centuries, a human will walk on the moon, and that human will know your name, as will all educated people of that time, I wonder how he'd take it.
There was no inhumation in Mazdean religion, because the death would make the earth impure. They exposed corpses to birds and animals. The inscription is reported in Greek by Strabo (I century BC), so it's probably a spurious tradition.
@@liriobolaffio3255 there's no hard evidence that that tradition existed in zoroastrianism before the sassanids, especially bc of the several iranian ruler tombs before the sassanids, so it's either that achaemenids weren't zoroastrian which is unlikely or that the tradition didn't exist at first
@@rayanzelms9453 The fairytale empire of persia was written by European colonialism, European jews. I think it is why you feel proud about this fairytale.

The best thing about the inscription on his tomb is that countless armies and invading forces came across it over the next two thousand years, and all chose to respect his wishes and leave the tomb alone.
@@MarvinT0606 Strabo stated that when Alexander the Great looted and destroyed Persepolis, he paid a visit to the tomb of Cyrus and commanded Aristobulus, one of his warriors, to enter the monument. Inside he found a golden bed, a table set with drinking vessels, a gold coffin, some ornaments studded with precious stones and an inscription on the tomb. No trace of any such inscription survives. Strabo described it as follows
Alexander then went to Pasargadae; and this too was an ancient royal residence. Here he saw also, in a park, the tomb of Cyrus; it was a small tower and was concealed within the dense growth of trees. The tomb was solid below, but had a roof and sepulchre above, which latter had an extremely narrow entrance. Aristobulus says that at the behest of the king he passed through this entrance and decorated the tomb; and that he saw a golden couch, a table with cups, a golden coffin, and numerous garments and ornaments set with precious stones; and that he saw all these things on his first visit, but that on a later visit the place had been robbed and everything had been carried off except the couch and the coffin, which had only been broken to pieces, and that the robbers had removed the corpse to another place, a fact which plainly proved that it was an act of plunderers, not of the satrap, since they left behind only what could not easily be carried off; and that the robbery took place even though the tomb was surrounded by a guard of Magi, who received for their maintenance a sheep every day and a horse every month. But just as the remoteness of the countries to which Alexander's army advanced, Bactra and India, had led to numerous other revolutionary acts, so too this was one of the revolutionary acts. Now Aristobulus so states it, and he goes to record the following inscription on the tomb: "O man, I am Cyrus, who acquired the empire for the Persians and was king of Asia; grudge me not, therefore, my monument." Onesicritus, however, states that the tower had ten stories and that Cyrus lay in the uppermost story, and that there was one inscription in Greek, carved in Persian letters, "Here I lie, Cyrus, king of kings," and another written in the Persian language with the same meaning.
Cyrus the Great was so Great that he even had a cameo in the Old Testament and called blessed by God and given the title of Messiah by the Hebrews. What an OG.
Isaiah 45:1 “Thus saith the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have holden, to subdue nations before him; and I will loose the loins of kings, to open before him the two leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut;”
The inscription on the Cyrus's tomb. "Mortals, I am Cyrus, son of Cambyses, founder of the Persian monarchy, and Sovereign of Asia, grudge me not therefore this monument." Even after being long dead, the Cyrus gives you chills.
Cyrus is such an interesting figure in history. He basically went from a child sentenced to be murdered to ruling most of the known world. He was one of the most tolerant Emperors in the ancient world and generally ruled in a fair manner.
" what's extraordinary about Cyrus, is that he appears as a paragon of princely statesmanship in the two pillars of Western cultures, that is the Roman tradition and the Bible". Cyrus freed nations enslaved by the Babylonians and returned their various gods to their shrines. The friends and enemies respected and praised Cyrus the Great. The Bible called Cyrus the Great "Messiah". The Babylonians welcomed Cyrus the Great as a liberator. " In the 18th Century, that model of religious tolerance based on a state with diverse cultures, but no single dominant religion, became a model for the founding fathers. People like Thomas Jefferson, who drafted the Declaration of Independence and became the third president of the United States, had to rely on Xenophon's Cyropaedia as a reference for the life and leadership of the Persian king. No European state managed to build tolerance into the structure of the state, the importance of Cyrus to those who wrote the constitution of the United States. These acts, which have been interpreted as allowing freedom of worship and repatriating deported people, have earned Cyrus a reputation as an enlightened monarch". Xenophon wrote on how Cyrus ruled a diverse society based on tolerance.
William James (Will) Durant (1885-1981): " The first principle of his (Cyrus the Great) policy was that the various peoples of his empires would be left free in their religious worship and beliefs…Instead of sacking cities and wrecking temples he showed courteous respect for the deities of the conquered, and contributed to maintaining their shrines…he accepted indifferently all religions, and-with much better grace-honored all the gods." Durant, 1942, page 353; Durant, Will (1942) The Story of Civilization:(Part One): Our Oriental Heritage. New York: Simon & Shuster Professor Patrick Hunt "If you are looking at the greatest personages in History who have affected the World, 'Cyrus the Great' is one of the few who deserves that epithet, the one who deserves to be called 'the Great'. The empire over which Cyrus ruled was the largest the Ancient World had ever seen and maybe to this day the largest empire ever. "

@@nebsam7137 Well, it's safely back in the hand of the Iranians now. So Alexander, the Arabs and the Mongols didn't destroy it for the brief periods they conquered Iran.
@@magtovi If the Americans destroy it, Cyrus the Great's message would have been ignored for the first time in 2500 years. You'd think it would be Genghis Khan or Alexander the Great - who sacked cities. Instead, it's the USA and its allies, all while pretending "its for peace". If the world exists another 1000 years, America's propaganda won't work as well against the facts recorded. "Iraq destroyed. No WMDs". "Iran destroyed. Israel and Saudi didn't like them".
@@magtovi The actual Baghdad and its library was destroyed by Mongolians under the Khan. And it is not America that is the attacker. People in the middle east have fought against each other in disorganized campaigns since the caliphate destroyed much of the infrastructure that survived from antiquity onward. Iran could have become a modern, progressive and powerful nation by now, but If you want to point fingers point them at Abu Bakr who led his horde against the Shas and the late Persian empire, or the religious extremists who were pawns in the hands of western powers from the 90s onward to thwart the growth of middle eastern societies. The United States is simply protecting its interests with a force and craftyness that people in the middle east were not expecting from westerners since WW2. And you can be sure of one thing: it would be a lot deadlier if the west was not regulating itself as strongly as it is at the moment. Don't be fooled into thinking you have seen the full force of the American war machine: that never happened because - for better or worse - congress and politicians have prevented that all the way back to the Vietnam War. Military actions still have to be accounted for before the people at large. And that is good: Otherwise we would have other names lined up next to Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

As an Iranian I would like to thank Kings and Generals team for this brilliant video, I really enjoyed the video Cyrus the great is like a prophet for us, he's the most understated historical figure, btw you forgot to mention his Cyrus's cylinder which is said to be the first declaration of Human rights, and also there was no mention of his religious and cultural tolerance towards his subjects, and the things that actually entitled him of the title "the great" Anyway thanks again and much love from Iran🇮🇷❤️
The Cyrus cylinder has nothing to do with human rights, and it shouldn't be seen as the world's first declaration of human rights. While the Achaemenid empire was relatively tolerant towards other religious and cultural practices (unlike, for example, the Sassanids which often repressed deviant religious and cultural practices with brute force), it had no notion of human rights. Frankly any document prior to the 16th-17th century should not be considered a human rights document, even the Magna Carta. The Cyrus cylinder mostly served to legitimize his kingship over newly conquered Babylon.
@@morleans3049 if it was from the Greeks, it would be, right?! though I like Greeks, anyway The essence of Cyrus cylinder is freedom of religion, language, culture, abhoring slavery and others... @@wankawanka3053 they're not talking about that kind of great, it's just a coincidence that they happen to be talking about cyrus the great. op talking about he doesn't think that great men alone move or create history. but problem with that is those men are the ones who created the historical records. it is strange that a huge chunk of human history is a series of battles and dynasties but the main reason we even have historical records is because those guys wanted to brag about how great they were.
He never did that. This is the translation of the inscription on his modest tomb, “O man! I am Cyrus, who gave the Persians an empire and was the King of Asia. Grudge me not, therefore, this monument. "
Cyrus was great not due to his military genius or rulling skills, but for his respect for human rights and refusal of slavery. However, we often hear the term great is given to warlords such as Alexander, Chenghiz khan, Napoleon ... I personally take pride in refusal of slavery in Persian culture. Perhaps the only major civilization that did not build on the shoulders of the slaves and yet made it.
speaking of of the mongols, mentioning tolerance is a little over exaduration. They destroyed cities, executed by thousands and let them pray on the ruins. this is not much of a tolerance. They were just unbelievers themselves and saw the religious to be weak, so they kept them be, as long as there was no clash with the appointed khan.
Another account pertains to the Persian custom to marry their siblings, such as the son of Cyrus married his own blood sister, according to Herodotus. Book 3-31.

What are you talking about? Actually I would argue and say history is taught in a very “middle eastern”-centric way. Most ancient civilizations (Persia, Judea, Babylon, Sumerians, and etc) taught in school are all based in the Middle East while other areas of the world get totally ignored
that for fucking Democrasy 😂 they hate monarchy, because you can not be a king just by talking, in democrasy you can do everything just by saying bullshits.
This man is not just for Persians to be proud of, but for mankind to be proud of. He also wrote the first declaration of human rights, on the cylinder. He was anointed by God in the Torah. He didn't allow slavery in his empire. He freed the Jews from Babylonian captivity. He had temple rebuilt in Jerusalem for God. He got back the valuables that belonged to Hebrews from the Babylonians. The Persians were first people to believe in one God. He deserves the title "Great"
@SphinX He is a legend, that’s why world leaders like Netanyahu compare Trump to him, Cyrus’s face is on Israeli coins, he is the only gentile Messiah in the holy books, and people around the world name themselves after him thousands of years after his death
Cyrus and the Achaemenid empire deserve far more recognition. After reading Xenophon's Education of Cyrus, I wondered why this man isn't celebrated like Alexander or Julius Caesar. Without Western bias, he would be the greatest king that has ever lived.

In history classes here they teach that Iran became a country after England let them. Not one word about being of 3-4 countries that have existed for thousands of years.
For me, Cyrus the Great is the greatest emperor in human history. Cyrus the Great is the pride of humanity. Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, the great western philosopher, in his work "The Philosophy of History" introduces Persians as the "first historical people" in history. George W.F. Hegel. The Philosophy of History : " The Persian Empire is an empire in the modern sense - like that which existed in Germany, and the great imperial realm under the sway of Napoleon; for we find it consisting of a number of states, which are indeed dependent, but which have retained their own individuality, their manners, and laws. The general enactments, binding upon all, did not infringe upon their political and social idiosyncrasies, but even protected and maintained them; so that each of the nations that constitute the whole, had its own form of constitution. As light illuminates everything - imparting to each object a peculiar vitality - so the Persian Empire extends over a multitude of nations and leaves to each one its particular character. Some have even kings of their own; each one its distinct language, arms, way of life and customs. All this diversity coexists harmoniously under the impartial dominion of Light ... a combination of peoples - leaving each of them free. Thereby, a stop is put to that barbarism and ferocity with which the nations had been wont to carry on their destructive feuds. " Professor Patrick Hunt "If you are looking at the greatest personages in History who have affected the World, 'Cyrus the Great' is one of the few who deserves that epithet, the one who deserves to be called 'the Great'. The empire over which Cyrus ruled was the largest the Ancient World had ever seen and maybe to this day the largest empire ever. "

Well the actual word is "Kuru"- strangely the heroes of the epic Mahabharata were collectively called a tribe of kuru .. The modern day descendants of these guys are known as "Tomaras or tunwar" clans..
Another account pertains to the Persian custom to marry their siblings, such as the son of Cyrus married his own blood sister, according to Herodotus. Book 3-31.
Cyrus the Great was truly a remarkable leader! His tomb, while simple, is absolutely magnificent. Despite being the "King of kings", he did not commission the largest tomb structure like many ancient rulers did. Yet, his resting place still commands admiration and respect from those who see it today, standing as a testament to his legacy for over 2500 years amidst the turmoil of history!
Well, true, but that's been the story of every other cultures overrun by brutal Islamic expansion. Local cultures and religions were wiped off. Though to Iranian credit, they've not completely obliterated their great pre-Islamic heritage and most importantly, language. First of all, Kudos to you guys again for this brilliant video. Two questions: First, why wasn't the birth theory of Ctesias covered as he explains there was no family relationship between Cyrus II and Median King, Astyages unlike Herodotus' theory? Second, why didn't you guys mention that it is possible Cyrus is not from House of Achaemenes and Behistun inscription is more likely a fabrication from Daruis's part, trying to relate himself to Cyrus making himself a legitimate heir to the throne while it is possible Cyrus father, Teispes, was not even related to Achaemenes at all (I know you guys covered part of this possible propaganda campaign of Darius in a previous video)? Also it seems you guys forgot to mention the treaties between Media, Lydia and Babylon which troubled Cyrus.
I know the questions were more towards the channel owner, but: There are many theories revolving around Cyrus' birth and his death, but Herodotus' "tales" seem to be more epic and entertaining, which seems to be the reason why they are the most popular, even though, as I'm sure you know, Herodotus isn't exactly famous for being accurate and wasn't so in his own time either. On the account of Cyrus' bloodline, in his famous cylander he introduces himself as the son of Cambyses, grandson of Cyrus I, great grandson of ChishPish (Tiespes), and Tiespes' father was Hakhamanesh (achaemnid). So he was most definitely an Achaemnid, no matter the 3rd party theory behind his birth. On Darius' relation to the Achaemnids, the theory in which he is introduced as a usurper does make some sense, but is not supported by either Iranian or foreign historical evidence.
@@macseyyed7967 to be fair to Heroditus he never claims to be telling the entire truth. He actually says in his writing at the start that he's often writing of events that he's been told of and that he's decided to put down anything he's told from several sources. He doesn't say that he checks the stories or that they are definitely right just that he will be reporting what he hears. Also many of the things that people thought were definitely fiction have been shown to maybe have a decent amount of fact to them. Like his gold digging ants that now seem to have been marmots in the mountains that occasionally dig up gold and the Persian word for Marmot is v similar to their word for ant...
Afternoon mate, these are all very good questions and I figured, as the writer of that video, that I should answer them. Most of the reasoning simply boils down to narrative flow and time constraints. With Cyrus' era being quite shrouded by the historical veil in general, I was aware of the other theories regarding his ancestry and birth. However, if I noted each and every theory, it would've both disrupted the flow of the video and made it 2 hours long. Perhaps I ought to have briefly included them in a visual card, but that's something which can definitely be done in the future. There are so many historical 'ifs' that we have to choose which ones to include and exclude. We encourage you guys to do deeper research onto all the fascinating theories concerning this period, because it really is an interesting time in history. Thanks for watching and commenting :)

Cyropaedia by Xenophon is about Cyrus the Great of Persia/Iran, the founder of the Persian Achaemenid Empire.

As an Iranian I would like to thank Kings and Generals team for this brilliant video, I really enjoyed the video Cyrus the great is like a prophet for us, he's the most understated historical figure, btw you forgot to mention his Cyrus's cylinder which is said to be the first declaration of Human rights, and also there was no mention of his religious and cultural tolerance towards his subjects, and the things that actually entitled him of the title "the great"
Anyway thanks again and much love from Iran🇮🇷❤️
The Cyrus cylinder has nothing to do with human rights, and it shouldn't be seen as the world's first declaration of human rights. While the Achaemenid empire was relatively tolerant towards other religious and cultural practices (unlike, for example, the Sassanids which often repressed deviant religious and cultural practices with brute force), it had no notion of human rights. Frankly any document prior to the 16th-17th century should not be considered a human rights document, even the Magna Carta. The Cyrus cylinder mostly served to legitimize his kingship over newly conquered Babylon.

He even personally checked if his people (i mean normal citizens like farmers) were having a good life
Both Iran and India have fascinating history and need more attention
I'm glad that some of our Zoroastrian ancestors were able to go to India and have a peaceful life there away from those fanatic muslim arabs
Arabs tried to conquer India and make indians convert to islam too, right ?
If i'm not wrong, Indians had several battles with the muslim arabs
Another interesting thing is that it wasn't the only time that Persians had to emigrate to India
After Mongol and Temurid invasions, some Persian poets, scientist, philosophers, artist and architects (those who survived or weren't captured by invaders) needed a peaceful place away from all those destructions and so they moved to India
Still, that wasn't the last time either
When the Safavids took power in Iran, many poets poems weren't appreciated in the Safavid's court or even in the entire country
Again, Persian poets moved to India where their works were much more appreciated
They gained fame and wealth there and some of them went back to Iran
Even during the Ghaznavid rule, unlike the Ghaznavid sultan, Indian kings seems to have liked Ferdowsi's Shahname book
Cyrus the Great is a favorite conqueror to read about. And I'm glad this video came about. Because I always enjoy knowing more about him. This video was a joy to watch. My compliments to all those who made this video a reality.
Great Video My Friend!!!!!
I am from Shiraz where Cyrus tomb is, very simple structure, even Alexander did not destroy the tomb, while Persepolis Darius's palace is walking distance and was burned by Alexander. Cyrus freed all slaves and let people practice their own religions, even built their temple. Destruction, slavery and oppression was against his religion. He was obligated to all nations not just his own nation. According to U.S sources, Cyrus model of ruling the nations was an inspiration for writing American constitution.
I don’t think Cyrus today would be proud of The US and it’s best ally Israel…
Yes please. I have been waiting on more about the history of Persia and the Iranian empires. I can't wait for the Sassanids and their influence on medieval knights.
It is indeed tragic Cyrus is not as well known as Alexander. What a force of nature! Excellent work as always!
Cyrus built an Empire, Alexander merely destroyed one.

@emperor Aurelian (2) things. 1- Good old “sword-in-hand” Aurelian is my favorite Emperor; and 2. Cyrus is not well known because Americans hate Iranians. @@GoogleUserOne What are you talking about here in cali we learned about the achaemenid empire
Diversity in counsel, unity in command. Cyrus the Great.
For me, Cyrus the Great is the greatest emperor in human history. Cyrus the Great is the pride of humanity.
Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, the great western philosopher, in his work "The Philosophy of History" introduces Persians as the "first historical people" in history.
George W.F. Hegel. The Philosophy of History :
" The Persian Empire is an empire in the modern sense - like that which existed in Germany, and the great imperial realm under the sway of Napoleon; for we find it consisting of a number of states, which are indeed dependent, but which have retained their own individuality, their manners, and laws.
Professor Patrick Hunt "If you are looking at the greatest personages in History who have affected the World, 'Cyrus the Great' is one of the few who deserves that epithet, the one who deserves to be called 'the Great'.

This brought tear to my eyes. As an Iranian I can only mourn over what we had and what we have become.
Don't worry brother
Good days wil come
Cyrus legacy will be restored
Well, true, but that's been the story of every other cultures overrun by brutal Islamic expansion. Local cultures and religions were wiped off. Though to Iranian credit, they've not completely obliterated their great pre-Islamic heritage and most importantly, language. First of all, Kudos to you guys again for this brilliant video.
Two questions:
First, why wasn't the birth theory of Ctesias covered as he explains there was no family relationship between Cyrus II and Median King, Astyages unlike Herodotus' theory?
Second, why didn't you guys mention that it is possible Cyrus is not from House of Achaemenes and Behistun inscription is more likely a fabrication from Daruis's part, trying to relate himself to Cyrus making himself a legitimate heir to the throne while it is possible Cyrus father, Teispes, was not even related to Achaemenes at all (I know you guys covered part of this possible propaganda campaign of Darius in a previous video)?
Also it seems you guys forgot to mention the treaties between Media, Lydia and Babylon which troubled Cyrus.
Because this is Kings and Generals-not Dan Carlin’s version.
I know the questions were more towards the channel owner, but:
There are many theories revolving around Cyrus' birth and his death, but Herodotus' "tales" seem to be more epic and entertaining, which seems to be the reason why they are the most popular, even though, as I'm sure you know, Herodotus isn't exactly famous for being accurate and wasn't so in his own time either.
