A new beginning for the Middle East: The Cyrus Cylinder and Ancient Persia

  • The Cyrus Cylinder is one of the most famous objects to have survived from the ancient world. It was inscribed in Babylonian cuneiform on the orders of Persian King Cyrus the Great (559-530 BC) after he captured Babylon in 539 BC.
    The cylinder is often referred to as the first bill of human rights as it appears to encourage freedom of worship throughout the Persian Empire and to allow deported people to return to their homelands. It was found in Babylon in modern Iraq in 1879 during a British Museum excavation.

    The difference between Cyrus and others is that, you don't have to be a Persian to be proud of yourself when you learn about him, you'd feel proud simply as a human being from any part of the world with any ethnic background.

    Surprisingly uplifting. These scholars and curators, with their enthusiasm for ancient Iranian culture, represent cosmopolitanism. That, to me, is the acceptance of value in diversity, and the growth of wisdom through good ideas from outside one's sphere. In other words, openness. I'm an American sad to have learned nearly half my countrymen disdain cosmopolitanism, as well as scholarship, openness, complexity, tolerance and "progress."

The Bible says the world would start to have labor pains like a woman with child. Earthquakes have been on the rise in the last two decades. The Bible says many would scoff just like the days of Noah. They do. Even Jesus crucifixion was prophesied before it happened - Psalms 22. That's just a few things of many. • @zagrebblues9894
      @zagrebblues9894 6 років тому +56

      The latter, although it was meant to be a unique object. Cuneiform writing consists of grooves pressed into clay, resulting in a relief-like surface, so if you wanted to reproduce text you would first need a negative master copy. This one isn't a negative (and I'm certainly no expert but I never heard of Persians doing this). It is merely a piece of clay shaped like a cylinder which was created as a foundational deposit, i.e. its purpose was to be buried underneath the foundations of the main temple in Babylon dedicated to Marduk, which is why it talks about Cyrus as a benefactor restoring destroyed temples, even if those temples belong to peoples he conquered. It was never meant to be actually read by contemporary people, it was buried under the building as sort of a message to Marduk, the deity of the temple.

    • @QuimFont

      @kev googlestein what? No. They did not invent relief printing. This is not that.

    • @MTerrance
      @MTerrance 4 роки тому +6

      That was my first thought, but the cylinder is not flat but bowed, so it could not be used as a master mold. The second thought is what if was used tomimprint on papyrus using ink, but there is no evidence of ink on the cylinder as far as I know. It would be ironic if the cylinder were "cleaned" removing all traces of ink, but there is no evidence of that either. Finally, suppose it was actually a negative? Again, no evidence of that as far as I know. One final question: how did the scribe keep the clay wet enough to work on the entire cylinder? If it were rotated as it was worked it would seem the side lying on a surface would be flattened as it was rolled to expose the fresh (unmarked) surface. If the cylinder was built up row by row and not rotated until the already completed rows were sufficiently dry to avoid the pressing out of completed rows as they moved to the bottom of the cylinder, there should be evidence of the fresh clay meeting the already dry rows. I wonder if anyone has tried to figure that out.

    There is no end to the brilliance that was Cyrus. He was an amazing man. Sadly for us modern people, there is very little known about him. Yes his people were literate and had the written word, but the destruction of following millenia has exacted a terrible price Suffice it to say, his reign was a model for the (much later) Greek democracies. It suggests that there were incredible thinkers and civilizations that preceded him, all with a more humane bent than what followed.
    After Cyrus passed away, his empire went to far lesser men who gradually eroded and corrupted it until the time of Darius 3, who was defeated by Alexander. Actually, his generals murdered him, which is another story. Along with the destruction of Persepolis.
    Nice to see a great video about him.

      Darius III and other Achaemenid kings did not corrupt or erode the EMpire, they empowered it. Darius III wasn't defeated by Alexander either, he was killed before there was a conclusion to the battles, not to mention several Persians defeated Alexander already. The Greeks did not practice democracy so much so as they did slavery.
      The Persian civilisations were far superior than any Greek ones, especially under Darius III who was far more patient and reasonable and decisive than his enemy. Do note, he is the first Achaemenid king who appointed a satrap for Persepolis, that reigned terror on Alexander and his feeble-minded strategies (and men).

    Daniel 6:1 KJV It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom an hundred and twenty princes, which should be over the whole kingdom; 2 And over these three presidents; of whom Daniel [was] first: that the princes might give accounts unto them, and the king should have no damage. 3 Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit [was] in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm. 4 Then the presidents and princes sought to find occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find none occasion nor fault; forasmuch as he [was] faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him. 5 Then said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find [it] against him concerning the law of his God. 6 Then these presidents and princes assembled together to the king, and said thus unto him, King Darius, live for ever. 7 All the presidents of the kingdom, the governors, and the princes, the counsellors, and the captains, have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a firm decree, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any God or man for thirty days, save of thee, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions. 8 Now, O king, establish the decree, and sign the writing, that it be not changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not. 9 Wherefore king Darius signed the writing and the decree. 10 Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime. 11 Then these men assembled, and found Daniel praying and making supplication before his God. 12 Then they came near, and spake before the king concerning the king's decree; Hast thou not signed a decree, that every man that shall ask [a petition] of any God or man within thirty days, save of thee, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered and said, The thing [is] true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not. 13 Then answered they and said before the king, That Daniel, which [is] of the children of the captivity of Judah, regardeth not thee, O king, nor the decree that thou hast signed, but maketh his petition three times a day. 14 Then the king, when he heard [these] words, was sore displeased with himself, and set [his] heart on Daniel to deliver him: and he laboured till the going down of the sun to deliver him. 15 Then these men assembled unto the king, and said unto the king, Know, O king, that the law of the Medes and Persians [is], That no decree nor statute which the king establisheth may be changed. 16 Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast [him] into the den of lions. [Now] the king spake and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee. 17 And a stone was brought, and laid upon the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his lords; that the purpose might not be changed concerning Daniel. 18 Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting: neither were instruments of musick brought before him: and his sleep went from him. 19 Then the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste unto the den of lions. 20 And when he came to the den, he cried with a lamentable voice unto Daniel: [and] the king spake and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions? 21 Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever. 22 My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt. 23 Then was the king exceeding glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God. 24 And the king commanded, and they brought those men which had accused Daniel, and they cast [them] into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions had the mastery of them, and brake all their bones in pieces or ever they came at the bottom of the den. 25 *Then king Darius wrote unto all people, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth; Peace be multiplied unto you. 26 I make a decree, That in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel: for he [is] the living God, and stedfast for ever, and his kingdom [that] which shall not be destroyed, and his dominion [shall be even] unto the end. 27 He delivereth and rescueth, and he worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, who hath delivered Daniel from the power of the lions. 28 So this Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.*

    Glad to see that they acknowledge that history is written by the victors. Brings Armenia to mind. Many past scholars and even now say that Armenia is the missing link to Mesopotamian history... According to Xenophon’s ‘Cyropaedia’, the King of Armenia has been discovered trying to wriggle out of all his obligations to his over-lord. Forced to submitted himself for trial before Cyrus, the King stands to lose everything, wealth, army, family and life. His son, Tigranes, pleads his case with such philosophical skill and frank acknowledgement of guilt, that Cyrus restores the whole family to his favour. The King of Armenia stands in the centre with his head bowed and his arms crossed, at the head of a deputation of followers; his son, Tigranes, interceding between the King and Cyrus (enthroned to the right), has thrown off his turban, which lies at his feet. The hero of the story is certainly Tigranes, who impresses his wife by offering to give his life to preserve her freedom; it is for this reason that she has eyes only for him (sitting behind her mother-in-law in the carriage). The three principal characters seem to be dressed as King, warrior and philosopher. Not to mentions the 1915 genocide of 1.5 million which was 3/4 of there entire global population. With there ancient Homeland know as the land of 1001 church's. The great cliff top city fortress of Ani.. City of Van, which has a submerged Ancient Armenian Church all destroyed with only a hand full still standing. These churches were built in cliff and mountains and recently discovered over 800 underground rooms and monastery.. how have we not looked in Armenia like we do everywhere else... It is home to Mt Ararat, biblical Noah's Ark resting place... Which after the genocide so much of the ancient Homeland was stolen by Turkey. So when there is any talk about this area, it is always refered to as Ancient Turkey.. Turkey is Not even a century old, Armenias have been there for thousands of years...
