  • In our new animated historical documentary we will talk about the king of the Achaemenid Empire Darius I and his ascension to the throne. Assassination, intrigue and cover-ups, what more could we want in a story about Imperial succession? The First Persian Empire was one of the greatest and most labyrinthine empires that ever existed. An expertly organised economy, a relatively tolerant and lenient provincial system, along with other groundbreaking advances in human civilisation was combined with some of the most scandalous and bloody court politics in the history of the world. Much of ancient Persia’s prominence and prosperity was made possible by one man, perhaps the most competent ruler Persia ever produced - Darius I, or ‘the Great’. How this figure came to power is not a well known story, but it is one of the most obscure and colourful tales we can gather from the ancient sources. Welcome to our video on Darius the Great and how he rose to become the King of Kings.

Here's a very curious bonus fact: Darius mounted a giant monument for himself which is known as The Behistun Inscription. I think the texts appearing in the video are from that monument. In it, he boasts how he's the legitimate king and how he has vanquished his enemies. The importance of that text cannot be overstated, because it was written in ancient Sumerian cuneiform script, but in three languages: Old Persian, Elamite, and Akkadian. Since Old Persian, having descendants, was very well understood, that allowed historians and linguists to gain a deeper knowledge of Akkadian or Elamite. Without those, so much of the information would be lost. The knowledge of Akkadian, a lost Semitic language, in its stead was very useful for gaining the understanding of Sumerian language with Sumer-Akkadian bilingual texts being found. Even a dictionary of those two languages. Without those, The Epic of Gilgamesh, for example, would be perfectly incomprehensible for us. By writing a giant boast-piece, Darius accidentally gave us so much information about antique languages, history and literature.

Hermann Schloffer von Graz that’s hardly indicative of intelligence the Akkadian language was included within the writing simply because Akkadian was a influential language in the Persian empire. It wasn’t an attempt to preserve the Akkadian language just like Ptolemy V Rosetta Stone wasn’t an attempt to preserve the ancient Egyptian language.

In my mother's hometown (Hamedan) in Iran, there are two cuneiform inscriptions from Darius and his son Xerxes. The site is called Ganjnameh. It says
"A great God is Ahuramazda, who created this earth, who created yonder heaven, who created men, who created happiness for man, who made Darius king. One king for many, one lord for all.
I am Darius, the great king, king of kings, king of countries containing all kinds of men, king in this great earth far and wide, son of Hystaspes, an Achaemenid."
It still sends shivers down my spine every time I read it. You can feel the greatness when you are standing in front of the inscription, a truly humbling experience.

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert . . . Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
'My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away."

This video is very weak actually.
First of all, the whole "mad Cambyses who got stabbed in the thigh" narrative was made up either by Herodotus to promote his usual propaganda or by his biased informants, namely Egyptians who hated Cambyses for conquering Egypt and Persians who favored Bardiya over his brother. This is further proven by the fact that the Apis Bull was not actually slain by the Great King; it was just fairy tale.
Second, the claims that Cambyses "went mad" are actually from Greek sources rather than the inscription of Darius the Great, which means that the Apis Bull being alive is irrelevant to Darius and his narrative.
Third, Bardiya was more popular than Cambyses among the Persians, which was the main reason why he got assassinated by his brother, and it was also why many impostors appeared claiming his identity and why many revolts sprung up after Darius killed the fake Bardiya. People these days who claim Darius was a "liar" often dismiss the impostor's deception as being unrealistic, but there's actually nothing unusual or unrealistic about it in history. For example, the death of Artaxerxes II was kept a secret for a year, and after the death of Emperor Nero a lot of impostors appeared in the Roman Empire claiming to be the dead Emperor due to his popularity. So Cambyses murdering his brother and keeping it a secret is not something extraordinary.
Fourth, the claims by Herodotus that other Magi were slain by Darius and his group is quite absurd, since the Persians were Zoroastrians and they would never impose collective punishment on their own priests just because of a single impostor priest.
Overall, this revisionist theory of Darius the Great being a conspirator is quite senseless and is nothing but anti-Persian character assassination dressed up as scholarship.

      @@ashk244
watching the video and reading the theories, what most agree is:
      - Cambyses died due to not natural causes
      - in the following power struggle the (or a) loser side was led by someone who claimed to be Bardiya, and who was supported by some magis
      - the eventually winning side of the power struggle was led by Darius
and everything else is debated. it is even possible that Cambyses was assassinated by his brother who was popular due to the support of the magis, and what Darius did was the revenge of the Cambyses-party. but this is just another theory to the others.
but in any case, I don't see how it is propaganda to debate what the people living two and a half thousand years ago did. them being good or bad is more about lessons of the human nature, not about specific nations, and even less about contemporary politics.

I have a soft spot for the Persian Empire, especially for Cyrus and Darius (the Greats). Great video! Shows really the complexity and a certain amorality a ruler needs to maintain such a large, polyglot empire such as the Persians have.
I've recently re-read Toby Wilkinson's "The Rise and Fall of Ancient Egypt". There, Cambyses was not portrayed as a mad king, but a rather sane one. Apparently, the records state that Cambyses took pains portraying himself as a rightful pharaoh in order to help bed-in the Egyptians to Persian rule. There were no mention of either the Apis bull incident or the attack on the Siwa oasis that resulted in the loss of his army. Whatever the truth of the matter is we'll never know, as Darius would've made it in his best interest to make sure Cambyses' name will pale in comparison to his.

The tale about the Apis bull is often suspected to be an invention by some later greek historians (who are almost the only accounts we have about the achaemenid kings), along with many other tales that are a bit more...out there. Like the way Darius supposedly ended up becoming king, for example.

The Aral Sea is stuck really deep in my mind because when I was really young, I think I read a National Geographic or a book from probably the late 80s on how the Aral Sea was shrinking. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like I remember seeing pictures of fairly big boats sitting basically in the desert where the sea used to be. It's just so trippy that basically an entire sea, that used to be pretty huge and I'm sure was majorly important to people in that area for thousands of years, has basically shrunk down to a murky little pond. Also, is it just me or is there something extremely unique and interesting about the culture, bureaucracy, administration and religion (Zoroastrianism) of this area? It all seems almost wholly unique to this small slice of time and area.

I believe he must have been referring to Udjahorresnet, the royal admiral of the Egyptian navy, who some historians believe defected when Cambyses invaded Egypt. This guy's autobiography survived the ravages of time because he inscribed it on stone, and it describes Cambyses in a totally different way from how Herodotus described him (and Herodotus was following the official version that was established after Darius became king).
Another one is that a monument that depicts Cambyses worshiping the sacred Apis bull (the same one that the official story claims Cambyses killed) survived to the modern day, but it was discovered in such a bad shape that a lot of the text on it is unintelligible. But one thing that is clear from the monument was that the Apis bull indeed died and the monument was built after the death, but we are not sure how it died. But historians argue that it is likely that Herodutus' version about the bull is probably wrong because it makes no sense why Cambyses will allow a monument depicting himself venerating the dead bull when he too was the one that killed it (unless of course he was truly mad lol).

Of course Darius' story is utter cack. Bardiya had his own massive territory to rule, that was his job. He must have had a network of officials, a court of his own in the region, who all knew him and answered to him and would expect promotion if he ascended to King. But it was possible to keep his death a secret from them? Who was with him when Bardiya was killed, none of his loyal men? You think it's also possible that an imposter, WITH NO EARS I MIGHT ADD, could take his place? The funniest part was the story of the wife being told to check his ears, like she wouldn't have noticed missing ears otherwise. The official Darius story sounds like a Blackadder episode, it's ridiculous.

I'm gonna argue for Darius the Great's story here.
First, in the old days, you didn't need to be insane to kill members of the royal family, as it happened countless times later on.
Second, It wasn't just Darius himself but in the old Persian culture telling a lie would be considered the worst of all, they thought of it as the murdering of the truth, so it seems very unlikely that Darius commits such a big lie and all the other high born Persians get on board with it.

Well done! Keep the series coming. Brings life to this important period of the Persian empire. Indeed archaeological evidence refutes Darius' account that Cambyses slew the Apis bull as he appeared not to have been in Egypt at the time as stated. This is another reason why we have to be careful to ascribe truth to isolated accounts of events. I say that even for Herodotus from whom most of the events of the Greco-Persian Wars are learned and from whom most of our thoughts about Persia come from (note: we also get accounts from Alexander the Great's personal biographers and Xenophon who fought the Persians). While we are indebted to Herodotus as the Father of History, it is telling that he was known in his own lifetime as "The Father of Lies" and "The Storyteller" by some prominent Greeks. He documented some things with accuracy but other events clearly revealed that he had not learned things firsthand. Historians doubt that he, for example, ever went to Egypt or ever went to Persia proper. As such he would not have had any input from the Persian court or the Persian side of the events. He wrote that history more than an ancient lifetime after the events. Where he actually met personages still alive, albeit in their twilight years, stories would have been no doubt infused with bravado much the way old soldiers or athletes today enhance their past achievements (darn internet now makes that harder! Lol). The Greek world was one of mythology surrounding superheroes such as Hercules and Achilles. We have to remember that Herodotus' audience was Greek amphitheaters and an active audience relishing in superhuman feats of Greek soldiers. So much of the dialogue attributed to the Persians would have been made up as he had no way of knowing any of that, especially a lifetime after the events in the ancient world where there were was no microfiche. Hopefully we learn more about this great Empire and civilization of the Persians and the other great civilizations of antiquity in coming years through actual archeological evidence.

It may have been a typo on the channels part, or they were sharing the contradiction of sources. It's hard to translate middle eastern history, because it wasnt recorded in a similar manner to the way we are use to in the west.
Assuming that's the case, the contradictions can be (probably) due to interpretations of the avesta. The avesta was interpreted to be not only in favor of incest, but it was preferred if it was honorable or prestigious (xwedodah), but this is a superficial understanding of it. Through xwedodah you could even symbolically marry a dead relative (for honor or to keep wealth), but the meaning and interpretation was always contested. Under the sassanids, it was cousins, not siblings, who were preferred.

There’s also the thought that he might’ve had something to do with the death of Cambyses - as close as Darius was in the Achemaneid bloodline, and with his spear bearer status, he’d have been involved in a lot of the inner workings of the Egypt campaign and in a perfect position to arrange for the untimely death of the king. Also helps to explain his “lucky” run in with the conspirators to take out Bardya - because of his convenient position in Cambyses’ court, proactively taking charge of the guys who were going to overthrow the next king would draw a lot of attention to the possibility of his involvement in Cambyses’ death.
