The second half of this album is so underrated and lost in the New vs Old metallica fight- Dont tread on me, through the never, of wolf and man, the god that failed, my friend of misery, struggle within- ALL CERTIFIED PLATINUM BANGERS.
When i was 10 i found the tape in a dumpster. Only the b side worked. So the 2nd half was all i had for awhile. Definitely way better than the first
@@86leewis I hear you on that, I was 13 when this came out, one of the first cds i owned I think? I played the living crap out of this album before going into my numetal phase over the next couple of years.
Second part of the album is better then the first
I still say Struggle within would of been a great song opener for the black album coming off Justice.
Don't Tread on Me was the End of the first side of the tape/record. Through the Never started side 2
This sums up the way most people feel. Most people aren't interested in telling other people how to live their lives, they just want to be left alone by others that would seek such power. Be it religious, political or cultural. Nice reaction. Thanks.
Amen
Take up Politics with that message Jedd and I'd Vote for you :)
@@setter7734 ‘amen’?! I get the agreeing. But man, Louis CK was right talking about how people reach for the highest of hyperbole to describe something, limiting the rest of their entire lives verbally.
Like my papaw says” they’re two kinds of people, the ones that want to be left alone, and the MFers that won’t leave them alone
@@jrshelton3398 He described individualism vs collectivism, i.e., freedom vs tyranny/right vs left/sound vs unsound/righteous vs sinister/good vs evil.
That heavy sound is called 'palm muting' and it's done by lightly laying your hand on the strings close to the bridge as you strum.
I’m not so light about it but yeah.
@@negativeindustrial As long as it still chugs it's all good!
@@ronkerr5080 CHUN CHUN CHUN
She has an EVH guitar. Just needs peavy viper or such for an amp.
Laying down the chunk
The frayed ends of sanity it a must
You both nailed it. This song helped me in middle school when I was being bullied. It didn't make me fight back. It just made me feel better about being me somehow. It's hard to explain. It gave me the inner strength to endure.
ALWAYS fight back
Good for you man! But just know you can and should always stand up for yourself. You are worthy of respect and you are capable of demanding it from those who treat you poorly.
Been there my brother...never back down. And I am a girl. But I kicked Ass and chewed Bubble Gum! 🤣
Perfect 4th of July song!
My best friend was a combat medic in the Army in Afghanistan. He would tell me stories about how him and his unit would blare this in his humvee. And they always flew a Gadsden and American flag outside of their humvee!
Absolutely!
These two don’t know what the Gadsden flag means
Heck yeah brother!
You guys should react to…
Metallica - My Friend of Misery
🎸🤘
Only one song???
What if they listen to Volbeat's take on it from the black list?
This whole album rocks. Jason Newsted doesn't get enough credit for his style of playing. There are 3 eras of Metallica.
Cliff Burton (R.I.P.)
Jason Newsted
Robert Trujillo
TEAM JASON!!! LOLOL
Love Em All
Brad would probably love 'Eye of the beholder' by Metallica.
Underrated song, i wish they play live at least once
@@blitera7261 Absolutely! The lyrics about perceptions of freedom, government overreach and hypocrisy are assembled tremendously well in the song.
Hetfield was at his absolute peak during ... And Justice for all.
I also love the way Kirk's solo comes in with that series of ascending bends, just tasty as all hell!
most underrated track on the album imo. you can play damn hopscotch to that chorus riff. and the dual harmony part is very cool.
I heard in an interview with Lars that if he had to pick one song to never play again it would be that one.
Had to dissect a song for a school report back in the day.
I chose "Eye of the Beholder".
Class also got/had to listen to it.
This is one of my fav Metallica songs
The songs; My Friend Of Misery, Through The Never, and Struggle Within are also great songs off of this album.
Love how she’s just vibing tf out 😂 this album has so many damn grooves most definitely their most touched up/polished album
no joke, she made me copy her moves. Bob Rock wanted to capture the essence of their live sound. I think he did
I totally agree with Brad. Great tune, great lyrics. The message and feel of the song really comes through and they are just spitting facts.
You guys just described the complete essence of heavy metal. Empowering music for outcasts.
Hello from New England...This is early 90's era METALLICA....As a drummer this is a favorite to play because of how much it swings..Plus the lyrics speak for themselves..Btw I saw METALLICA in 1988 in HARTFORD CONNECTICUT and they laid waste..I actually got 2 broken ribs in the pit..Peace from the Northeast..
Used to crank this tape in my Walkman on speech trips in high school.
One of the best songs off of the Black Album. Also this song is very underrated.
Lex, that "bark" at 4:07 that you loved so much is something I would replay over and over and over again when this first came out. I had it on cassette tape in 1991 at 13 years old and kept rewinding it to that exact moment 100's of times.
Same here…still awesome 30 yrs later
Brad is on the right path in the time context. First Gulf War was kicking off. But most good songs can apply to many situations
Always felt Pantera's walk was 'inspired' by this song.
Brad, the fact that the album is not thrash is the reason why Metallica fans like myself who were fans before this album didn't like it. It was a departure from what we were used to. It grew on me and I love the album.
It’s a masterpiece, heavy…bone crunching riffs
@@mr.smithgnrsmith7808
Yeah, it's a great album. Out of curiosity, how old are you?
I still prefer the first 4. Mid years were meh. Haven't really listened to their new stuff. I heard the went back to thrash. But their first 4is just so good. It's hard to listen to anything else.
Of Wolf and Man is a must listen to deep cut, very good song!
Great rallying song for freedom lovers everywhere.
The most diverse Metal band there is. Mexican, Filipino, German, and Anglo Saxon!
Lars is Danish
You mean Mexican, danish, American, American
@@kylehoulihan3875 Kirk Hammet's Mom, Teofila "Chefela" (born Oyao) is Filipino. EVH's mom's is Malaysian, Dad is Dutch, they met in Malaysia moved to the U.S. Eddie and Alex attended a segregated elementary school. Since the boys did not speak English as a first language, they were considered "minority" students and were bullied by the white students. Eddie Van Asian.
@@kylehoulihan3875 I don't know why u say Mexican vs American when Robert T was born in Santa Monica, California. He's Mexican and Native American descent.
@@kylehoulihan3875 Lars's Godfather is African American Jazz Sax legend Dexter Gordon.
Black album is right up Brad's alley🤘🤘🤘🤘🎸🎸
I tattooed "liberty or death on my forearm because of this song 🤘🤘
I think people misinterpret this sok h as support for "the war machine." But that doesn't align with almost every other Metallica song about war. Its kinda a critique in a way. But its closer to bands, mainly James Hetfields, Libertarian orientation, maybe as a response to those who would say they were anti-american or anti-military because of their "anti-war" songs. Although, i don't know if their songs were really anti-wsr rather than describing the experience of people who experienced it.
If j had to guess, I'd say its basically saying "I'm rattlesnake." Dont fck with me and I won't fck with you. But if you want to go there and escalate it and provoke me, well I've BEEN ready.
Every time I think I'm going to watch one of your videos before bed I end up watching like ten in a row... no regrets :) love your stuff.
Sounds to me Brad would love the entire Black album.
I'd bet he's more of a "Load" guy!
Of Wolf and Man is a great song. If Brad wants "less thrashy" Metallica the Load and Re-Load albums are probably best for him
Yeah those albums were more rock/blues fueled
To secure peace is to prepare for war is one of the best lyrics I've ever heard in any music.
The God that failed is one gem from this album that does not get as much love as it deserves, its always sandman, unforgiven and nothing else matters... Good songs but gotten pretty old because of repetition
I watch many reactors to pass the time.....you two are different.....I actually can't wait to see these reactions! Again another awesome reaction and lyrical breakdown! Well done well done 👏
It's from their 5th album, self titled Metallica aka The Black album released in 1991.
When I was a kid I thought James was singing "Soviets! Friend no more!" Because I played Command and Conquer: Red Alert2 all the time and the storyline was focused on U.S. vs Soviets
Instant favorite when I came to it on the tape I had,if I'm not mistaken it closed out side a on the tape. I loved the rhythms this song had in the drums and guitars.
One of my favorite Temallica songs...mostly because of that rhythm switchup on the drums at the start!! 🤩🤩🤩🥁
Having grown up in the 80's: when I first heard this song... I could've sworn he was singing "Soviet..." and not "So be it" lol
ABOUT TIME! gotta finish off the rest of the back half of the black album- this is the sound...
Love this album! Also love their Load album. Great music 🤘🏽
This makes me feel old. I bought the album when it came out in "91.
Me too!
Lex, I think the sound you are referring to is called a palm mute. It's made by touching the strings with your picking palm while striking the strings. With a lot of gain(distortion) you get that chuggy sound.
Correct, palm muting. Gives that great percussive sound.
Wife here..Thanks for reminding me of this Metallic Classic!!.. Your selection of songs are superb!!
You guys rock. By far the best reaction channel out there
That chugging heavy staccato quantized sound is a technique called palm muting. You hit strings and mute em with palm of right hand at the same time. Cheers.
I think I've heard them recently mention using Rocksmith, there is a section in the lessons called Palm Mutes 101 that explains it. Finding the right position and pressure with your right hand for a consistent sound can take a bit of work. A lot of the modern guys especially in the Djent genre will use a Noise Gate pedal for a really tight staccato P.M. sound.
@@richashby6422 Exactly the way you explained it, That's the way you do it, as well important might be the right position of your palm on strings. It's just simply muting or dulling strings. Right on.
The riff that Kirk plays right at the beginning (around 00:12 ) is the melody to the song "America" from the musical West Side Story. It's a nice touch.
@@stanflahaut1893 Just shows the wide array of influences on these guys.
And more people should definitely see West Side Story. It's a classic.
I remember Howard Stern playing a version of this song that a fan sent in the day after 9/11. The fan edited in clips from the news from that day. Still give me chills just thinking of it. After it made me shed a tear I wanted to run through a god dam wall.
This was my theme song when I was growing up. More relevant than ever!
Misery is a must and the struggle within!!
This is the song they have blasting right before an advance in my Desert Storm One days
My absolute favorite thing about this video is when Lex mimics the sound of a heavy electric guitar at 2:14, she "plays" For Whom the Bell Tolls. You little metalhead, you!
Lex. POWER CHORDS. That is that wonderful sound.
About time you did this jam
I believe in the radical concept of all of man having the divine right of individual liberty. I love this song.
One of my favorite songs from Metallica SOOOOOOO underrated!!!!🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾
Great!!! Probably my favourite with Wherever I May Roam and Disposable Heroes.
Through the never is my favorite song on this album. Love any era of metallica.
This was the first song I heard on the radio on 9-11 after the towers went down. It will always have a special place in my heart.
Yep, it's "Peace through Strength" Brad.
This is on their fifth, 1991, album; self-titled "Metallica" but often referred to as the Black album. This was their best selling album by far...selling over (a claimed) 30 million copies.
As of 2022, it has sold more than 28.3 million copies worldwide, which means it is the best-selling album of Metallica
The killer rhythm and menacing chromatic ascent put this among my favourite Metallica songs.
She’s so spot on, it’s middle Metallica!
had a buddy who was a Navy Seal, this was his team's jam when going to kick ass!
One of my favorite songs from Metallica
Brad has to take Lex to her first metal concert. I know that look, she’s a metalhead.
That's the magic of music as well, I've listened to this album since it's came out in 91' so most of my life lol, it's different perspectives you catch. Such is the way of Life I suppose
Thanks for reacting to this! My favorite Metallica song.n
This album is what got me into Metallica, my 8th birthday I got this for my first CD after growing up with Aussie rock on the radio in the car and cassette tapes of iron maiden, Judas priest, motley crue and red hot chili peppers to getting into Metallica, pantera, Megadeth, Sepultura, slipknot, Rob zombie, anthrax and slayer and punk bands like Nofx and pennywise. Also grew up listening to classical music thanks to my mum and metal is the closest thing to modern day classical music.
The radio talk show known as The Opie and Anthony Show used this song to open their show on September 11 2001
Amazing
The one relationship uptempo sing for men yes from the Black Album.
This is one of my favorite songs by a band with A LOT of great songs 😞🖤💥🕺🏼🎉🍾🤤 this song stomps 😉
Lex just absolutely grooving is brilliant ✌️💪😁
The chunky guitar sound that lex was talking about is called palm muting. The guitar player lays the back of their hand and pinky finger on the strings to keep the note from ringing very long. Then they lift it up when they want a chord or note to ring longer.
Lex nailed it as usual xD "The good man holds the greatest strength, so use it"
Finally! Someone did this amazing song.
One of the best from them!
When I was deployed to Afghanistan in 2004 me and a couple,e of our guys put a moto spin with this as the soundtrack. I have since lost it.
Don't Tread On Me and Bleeding Me are my two favorite Metallica songs. These songs are important.
Lex is cuuuuute.
Lex palm muting makes that heavy sound super easy to learn was the first thing I learned on guitar when I was a kid
That sound, Lex. is created by muting the strings of an heavily distorted guitar. You place the edge of your palm (the meaty part of the same edge from which sprouts the little finger) against the strings near the bridge as you pick the strings. It creates a percussive sound, which has varying amounts of chonk depending on how many frequencies in the mid ranger are EQ’d in.
One of my favorites. Don't Tread On Me!!!!!🐍
The short syncopated tight chords you are asking about is done by palm muting with the right hand. While the pick is striking the strings he dampening the strings with the back part of the same hand
One of the greatest songs very inspiring to me about patriots .
Love this song so much 🤟❤️
Mind you I love all Metallica songs
Yeah I got this album at midnight release, they used to do that a lot back in the 90’s they’d have midnight releases
This album uses space so well. The pauses have so much power. Listen to God That Failed or My Friend of Misery for perfect examples.
Lex, That sound is called Palm Muting and it's not too difficult, your picking hand mutes the strings so it's a chunky, distorted sound. You can do it!
Great review, great band, great song. Another great band to check out is Godsmack.
Hé Lex, If you got an electric guitar the trick to getting that great heavy chunky sound is by putting the amp on the overdrive channel, full gain, bass 8, mid 2 trebble 6, put the guitar on the back pick-up , hit an open E while keeping the palm or side of your hand gently resting on the strings where they come up out of the guitar to mute the open sound and get chucking. And look up powerchords, they will be your metal friend.
Also, I think she is comparing hearing a palm-muted powerchord that‘s mixed with a heavy kick (and snare) to just playing guitar without drums. It’s just not gonna hit as hard without a kick /snare. Lex should try playing to backing track with drums to get that feel.
2:09 Lex, that sound is very typical in heavy metal, and it's called 'palm muting'. Basically, you drown the strings very close to the bridge with the side of the palm while picking, and it makes that characteristic sound when the guitar is distorded with an overdrive pedal. You can still palm mute without distorsion, but it doesn't sound as heavy.
Lex, that heavy sound is palm muting a power chord with lots of distortion. Look up palm muting and master it. It will give you that heavy chugging sound.
Great Song!!!!
Beginning of the solo gives me chills everytime
I love seeing someone react to this Black Album song. You need to try My Friend Of Misery and Struggle Within. 2 other great songs on this album that I haven't seen anyone react to.
Great reaction! I'd love to see you're reaction to the newer Metallica, such as their 2 more recent albums "Death Magnetic" and "Hardwired To Self Destruct." And then see how you think of their sound compared to other decades of Metallica albums. They definitely went back to their speed metal/thrash roots on songs such as "All Nightmare Long" and "Spit Out The Bone."
Lex - the chugging sound in the riff of this song is achieved by a technique called "palm muting". While you strum the guitar you rest the palm of the strumming hand on the strings; it gives them a muted sound. When you couple it with the right distortion effects it sounds super tough and heavy. It's a fun and easy technique to learn for metal riffs!
Brad needs to binge Metallica the black album
