Treasure Planet didn’t do well at first but not because it was a bad film, because it came out the same time as the first Harry Potter movie, the advertisements were awful, and people caught on to Disney’s pattern of when movies would come out on DVD. It really is a good movie and a unique adaptation. I mean, the animation and the music is really worth taking a look at again.
No one is saying it bombed because it's bad, people seem to confuse the notion that when something is labeled a box office bomb it means it's bad. Plenty of terrible films become huge successes like The Transformers films, Fifty Shades of Grey, Cars 2, it has nothing to do with quality
I think another reason why Treasure Planet bombed at the box office back in 2002 was because people already got their Disney Animated Feature fix for the year with Lilo and Stitch, which came out in June of the same year.
Yeah, I also think it's very sad and undeserved that Treasure Planet bombed so hard - I liked it, it's a creative and underrated film.
It was also boring. I know this because I've watched both HP1 and Treasure Planet. No amount of marketing would have saved that snore-fest. TP also felt as if it went through Dev Hell whereas Lilo & Stitch, despite commencing production around the same time as TP, feels and looks a lot more complete. Especially in its writing, as I was able to note more segments and facets of L&S than I was able to note with TP. Hell, I wasn't even able to tell my dad what actually happened in TP after watching it 3 times back in 2002(granted, I was 3-4 years old, but I still semi-remember HP1 being crap and L&S being bloody good, so I can't see any reason for my lack of footnotes other than how dull TP was). It was that boring.
Actually, "Treasure Planet" came out the same year as the second "Harry Potter" film, "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets".

Again, this is a flat-out lie from a director. Animation in its purest form is a genre. To say that it is a medium is to say that music genres such as Rock, Orchestral(not "Classical", ORCHESTRAL), Electronica and many others are mediums under this logic. Which is patently false. At best, it can also be described as a technique, but that is it. It can't be anything other than a Genre (or Platform in the general sense) or a Technique with elements of a Genre, nothing else beyond that. Anyone trying to convince you or anyone otherwise is talking out of their arses.
Treasure Planet was given a godawful box office spot and I’m so sorry for Musker and Clements for having their passion project being done so dirty

@@cartoonhigh9990 Man, it's no wonder Lilo & Stitch was the sole contender during the company's Post-Renaissance era that was lucky enough to make it past the bouncer in order to become a marketing machine, probably because it had a much wider appeal compared to Treasure Planet. It really is a crying shame that box office bombs are off-limits from spawning a TV series and mass merchandising rights, even if it has a cult following.
@@cartoonhigh9990 I remember our family loved it so much we "forgot" to take it back to the library and had to buy it. Rewatching it now is just the best rush of nostalgia and and reminds me why I love creating stories in the first place. Sorry for the tangent but Treasure Planet is still amazing.

The problem is that was placed in the wrong month where there’s so many other big budget films as Gangs of New York & the 2nd Lord of the Rings film. Had they released it a different month without any competition, it could have been more successful.
Blame Disney for their boneheaded decision to release the same week as Chamber of Secrets.
Disney's other flops include Black Cauldron and Home on the Range. Although Cauldron and Treasure Planet have a few fans defending them as cult classics, basically everyone refuses to defend Home on the Range.
Home on the Range deserves every bit of hate it gets. The Black Cauldron is definitely one of Disney's weaker films, but it isn't terrible, and it's WAY better than Home on the Range. Treasure Planet is an underrated masterpiece and the fact that it bombed is such a shame.
Cauldron and Treasure Planet have quite a bit of substance to them. Home on the Range does not.

Actually a lot of Disney's big movies like Pinocchio, Fantasia, Bambi, Sleeping Beauty and Rescuers Down Under all did horribly in box office (Bambi actually flopped badly enough to set Disney back for a few years, only making package films until the 50s). It was rereleases and video sales that made their financial success.

Just because a movie did poorly in theatres, doesn't mean its bad though.
There are cases where a movie is good but does financially poor (The Good Dinosaur), but another movie is terrible but gets a lot of money (the Ice Age sequels).
Gregg Lee I actually like Ice Age 2 and 3 out of the sequels, but 4 and 5 were absolutely terrible.

Funny Fact: Will Smith was originally picked to play the role as Frank for Osmosis Jones; however, after reading the script, he declined WB's offer to bring in the character, so they manage to get Bill Murray in.
I can only imagine how they feel looking back on not casting Will Smith in the movie after what happened recently.

Sometimes I think that any animated movie that’s a box office bomb was just an underrated gem that many people didn’t give a chance, such as with The Iron Giant, Rise of the Guardians or Treasure Planet.
Then I get to #1, which definitely deserved to bomb in every conceivable way.
Movies like The Good Dinosaur, HTTYD 2, Balto, Watership Down (which didn't do well at the US box office) also deserved a lot better than what they got.

It's both a medium and a style of movie. I get though that genres are typically like horror, mystery, action, etc etc.
I think calling animation a genre is a bit of a stretch but I can still see it, most animation falls into the fantasy/ family genre.
Honestly regarding with Coco, me alongside other people I knew never liked the Frozen Short. In fact, it was so negatively recieved by audiences and critics that they pulled it off from theatres one week later (I think).
Tbh, I actually LOVED the Frozen short, coming from a Frozen fan (don’t @ me lol). Though, I do agree that was was a bit long for being a “short.” Even if I’m a HUGE Frozen fan (again, don’t @ me), I was WAITING for the short to be over!

Totally agree with you. It, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, The Road to El Dorado and Sinbad: Legend of The Seven Seas are the types of films made using animation I tend to adore the most.
I hate Mars Needs Moms more and more as each year passes because motion capture isn't a bad form of animation. It's been used to bring characters such as Thanos, Gollum, Ceasar, and Tintin to life like never before. Some of most critically acclaimed video games of all time (Until Dawn, RDR2, Spider-Man, The Last of Us, just to name a few) use motion capture and not only are they well received for their gameplay, they're also praised for their storytelling and how the characters look and feel like real people. I honestly would like to see a comeback for motion capture animated films, but until Peter Jackson finally puts Tintin 2 into production, that's not likely to happen anytime soon. It's only bad when it's used incorrectly. It's better when the humans aren't animated (it's why Thanos and Gollum are praised).
The problem is that having nothing but Motion Capture in your film can be really uncanny if used improperly. Mars Needs Moms failed because they tried too hard to make Milo and Mama look too realistic. The only reason it was motion capture was so that they could make Seth Green look younger. Having it for the aliens made sense, even if they're no Thanos. It worked for Tintin because they were making them just look more like the the cartoon characters. The story also worked because rather than just stretching one Tintin episode over a feature length, they combined some of his more epic stories into one of the more popular plots, Secret of the Unicorn, and turned it into one intense and awesome looking adventure rather than Mars Needs Moms doing not much more than repetitive filler. Maybe Tintin was unrealistic at points, but again, it was a cartoon, so they make it work. If there was one full MC film that had potential as a franchise, it'd be Tintin because of the pre existing franchise that it pulled from. Just imagine the Indiana Jones type journeys it could make. But yeah, Mars Needs Moms ruined everything just by existing.

Guardians and Treasure Planet were so underrated...they had good story, magnificent visuals and a lot of charm and character. I absolutely LOVED the relationship between Jim and Long John Silver. They really cared about each other. and it made John more than just another Disney villain. True, the company writers very good baddies like Jafar or Scar but they are just evil. They don't even care about their henchmen, treating them like tools and things. There is nothing wrong with that, but it's nice to have a villain that is more humanized. He was capable of caring for someone. The final scene where Jim lets him go, and he gives Jim part of the treasure so he can rebuild his mom's inn, is one of Disney's more moving moments.

Absolutely. Just 'cause a movie bombed financially, doesn't always mean it's bad. It just didn't receive as much attention, that's all. I remember feeling bummed out that not many people went to see Kubo and the Two Strings. The only ones I know who saw it were the ones I took to see it.

Musical Hell I actually remember reading a Bloom County collection where Breathed’s commentary mentioned that Disney was going to release “Mars Needs Moms” in 2011, and he seemed pretty proud of it. Pretty depressing in hindsight.
The 2 things that made Mars needs mums terrible was it's terrible CG (It was even worse that it was on a $150 million budget (I think That was the budget, tell me if I'm wrong)) and the main protagonist was so unlikable, I was actually rooting for him to fail.

I might get a lot of backlash for this, but The Good Dinosaur is probably my favorite Pixar film. It deserved a lot better than what it got.
I remember when I first saw the official trailer for it as an ad before a video. The first few seconds of it I was hyped. The animation for the nature, some leaves and rain or something, looked fantastic! Then it showed the dinosaurs. They felt so out of place and just looked ugly. I was instantly disappointed. The rest of the trailer didn't make it look appealing story-wise either. It was a hard pass from me.

You know when you say that Motion Capture Animation hasn't been used since the disaster that is Mars Needs Moms? You are not wrong. However, motion capture was used in some Dreamworks movies like How to Train Your Dragon 2 and Rise of the Guardians.

KidSnivy96 I wouldn’t have thought the entire movie was motion capture anyway. Maybe for typical actions like walking, running, etc, but not for stunts. Maybe it was just to test realistic movement.

That's not to say they are motion capture films. If you use that logic then all the movies of the Disney Renaissance are CGI since they all have computer in them somewhere. From the lava in Aladin, the gears in notre-dame, the monster in Hercules and the wildebeast in Lion King.
@@MrMarinus18 Yeah, true. The Hydra was the only CGI monster in Hercules. But I did notice the other SCI elements used int he others. And it's also true that How To Train Your Dragon and Rise of the Guardians do not count as Mo Cap films. Could have been used for testing or possibly something else.

Yeah. Sure, it wasn't as big a bomb as Mars Needs Moms, its budget was $40 million and it only got at most $900,000, resulting in a $39.1 million loss, but I think it'd make it on the list if its budget was like $150 million or something like that. But it should've been at least mentioned.
Delgo is the lowest grossing animated movie of all time but because it only had a 40 million budget according to Wikipedia it only ended up losing 46 million overall. Remember this top 10 is ranking how much money overall each film lost.

What about Delgo? That was a film with a budget of $ 40 million which didn't even break a million at the box office and was pulled out due to a cataclysmic opening. I know that in comparison to the other 11 entries (including the honorable mention), the loss and consequences doesn't seem too massive. But the fact is that this was a film that, I want to repeat, couldn't even make a million dollars at the box office and reportedly had two viewers per screening. At least give this an (dis)honorable mention.
Other than that, this was a good list. I, myself, is incredibly interested in the box office and I'm glad that I'm not the only one who is.
If Treasure Planet 2 was never cancelled it would have been released in 2005
Isn’t it also safe to say that in addition to Sinbad, the fact that Spirit: Stallion Of The Cimarron performing only modestly at the box-office, along with The Road To El Dorado bombing also factored in DreamWorks’ decision to shut down as well? Just a thought!

The Good Dinosaur and the Penguins of Madagascar was honestly pretty decent. But poor Treasure Planet and Guardians. It’s a shame those didn’t do as good as they did. I would have loved to seen a sequel or some kind of continuation of those two movies too.

The realistic for it's time textures reminded me a bit of Half Life 2 when it released, but both still look good today, just Half Life 2 looks better today than the Final Fantasy movie.
For me the good dinosaur is an insult to not just pixar but to the entire dinosaurs species as a hole.

Number 4: Oh my god, this is a terrible movie. Not only is the story dull, it also does hardly anything to make it a Final Fantasy movie. No ridiculous swords, no mages, no humanoid gods, just Doctor Sid and maybe a chocobo cameo

Number 2: It's was their first animated sci fi movie. At least Don Bluth made a guest appearance with Nostalgia Critic. Which is... really impressive, actually.
Number 1: You knew this was coming. Not only did I skip this because of the horrid animation, but because of the ridiculous story premise. And I'm glad I did, because the characters were just as bad. You have Milo, that smug little bastard they call a hero; Gribble, who despite being the most fleshed out character, is also a major idiot; Ki's an alien that talks like a stereotypical sitcom character; and the alien superintendent whose voice acting feels like they did in one take.
Spirits Within I really dug, never played the games so I didn't give a rat's ass how different it was.
Wait, SINBAD?! Dayum....that’s actually one of my fave animated movies. And Treasure Planet is criminally underrated in my opinion

On the subject of box office bombs, when Frozen was first released i figured it would be Disney's biggest bomb in history due to the trailers giving everyone nothing to offer (or at least nothing that wasn't childish as all hell) so it was a real shock that it became the highest grossing animated feature of all time.
I think the soundtrack played a huge part in it's success, people where singing the songs everywhere and it never stopped

@@terracotta7425 Disney originally planned Elsa to be the villain and Let it go has going to be a villain Song, but because the writers loved the song they changed Elsa into a tragic hero and the story was rewritten allover again, but that caused new problems. The reason why Elsa's ice powers are not explained is because the writers thought it be too overcomplicated for the kids to understand. If that's the case then how is changing Elsa from a villain to a hero a good idea again, because so far the story is a mess????

The Good Dinosaur actually grossed $426.4 Million CAD worldwide. Not exactly a “Box Office Bomb”. Especially when films that grossed less can be considered successes!

Delgo's budget was small enough that it was mathematically impossible for it to make the list, but I think it deserves an honourable mention for being quite possibly the biggest bust of all time by percentages, animated or otherwise. $40,000,000 budget, made $700,000. For those keeping track, that is a 98.25% loss.

Sadly, Treasure Planet bombed because there was an internal war going on within Disney's animation department at the time. They didn't want to let the directors make the movie they promised them. There was fighting, someone got fired, Roy Disney Jr. got involved, the company was trying to get rid of their 2D animation department by saying "2D animation is dead," and to prove their point, there was some corporate sabotage meant to boost support for future CG projects. By that I mean that they didn't advertise the film until just before it came out (and then limited), little merchandising, and for the trailers they DID have----it actually gave away movie spoilers! Treasure Planet is a good example of corporate cannibalism--where a company sinks their own product to make way for a new one----in this case: the CG animation department. If the movie had been successful as a 2D animated film, it would have been in direct contrast with then-CEO Iger's blatant statement that 2D was dead. (Disney's CEO also tried to say "princess films" were dead and Tangled would be their last one--but they WAS forced to eat those words as the movie did so well that they started to focus heavily on princess films--both the creation and mocking of for profit).
But, for Treasure Planet, the original release of the DVD actually mentions some of the sabotage, in-fighting, and difficulties the crew faced in the film commentary. As for the cost, the reason it cost so much money to make the film is because of the CG animation (which is more expensive than 2D animation) which was integrated into the film in an era where that still wasn't as common (and certainly not to that degree). But hey, that's nothing compared to Moana. The average Disney film today is upwards 150K+, but Moana was so expensive that Disney opted not to say how much they spent. Pricey.

Funny story. I’ve had a similar experience and it happened twice when I was younger. The first was when my mom took me and my siblings to see Brother Bear in theaters and we accidentally walked into Looney Tunes: Back in Action instead and the second time when we went to see the 2006 live-action version of Charlotte’s Web and we went into Happy Feet and ended up missing the first half of the film where Fern saves Wilbur’s life and raises him til she gives him away to her uncle’s farm.

Treasure Planet was awfully good, but I've read that it a movie Disney didn't want to do, perhaps because it was far from the Broadway musical theme of the Disney Renaissance. They said to purposely bombed this film through bad marketing, releasing it at the wrong season, and among other competitive films.
To be honest Mat I don't think they puppet in Dorthy's Return really looks scary mainly because the animation looks so cheap.
Hell the lemmings in Norm of the North are more creepier with their horrible animation

Sinbad is one of my favorite animated movies. I'm surprised it is seen as such a flop. The storyline, the action, the comedy, and the drama along with the mythology make it one of my go to watches along with the other 2D dreamworks films.

I think the 125 million Sinbad lost also included its advertising budget since that usually is not added to film's budgets on sites. Treasure Planet lost a lot due to that
