Removed an old radiator and replaced with new one & moved it to opposite side of room - had to extend pipework by 4 metres to new position. Refilled system and bled all radiators. New radiator clold / luke warm and would not heat up. Was about to call plumber in but followed your instructions instead. It WORKED PERFECTLY. All radiators are now balanced and the new radiator in lounge is hot and cosy .... Thank you for posting this video ... saved me a lot of hassle & expense ..... SUBSCRIBED 👍👍👍
IT WORKED! Balancing the boiler/radiator actually worked and now I can sit in my new loft room without a cold nose and hands! Cannot thank you enough! My plumber had no idea how to solve the problem and I did it with your help.
Your advice was spot on! We'd had new, larger and extra radiators installed recently during a refurbishment. I turned all the radiators off, then on 1/4 of a turn at the valve (rather than the temperature valve) and opened the cold radiator to full. Turned the heating on and now the radiator is red hot, as are they ALL! Thanks again.
Brilliant. You saved me. I tried everything after taking my rad off the wall for decorating. Turning all the radiators off made it come back to life. All working now. Thank you
Thank you so much! I have been struggling getting heat into our lounge for literally months. Twenty minutes and you have solved us a massive problem. All our lockshields were wide open. Now sorted and ALL radiators are hotter than they were. Again, thank you so much.
Thank you. Been struggling with this problem, had plumbers in and electricians thinking it was a electric fault. Hundreds could of been save if I seen this first. Good luck and thanks again
Just tried this and it worked a treat to get heat back into my kids bedroom after getting a new radiator installed in the downstairs bathroom, thank you very much for making this video to help others.you my friend are a star👍
Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos. You helped me to successfully replace my cistern pump earlier this year and you've just mended my radiators after a week of being freezing cold and sick with worry about there being a huge, expensive problem with the central heating! Thank you so much and all the very best :) x
Fantastic!!! I tried everything before coming across your video!! Now the rad is super hot and I've opened the rest half a turn and it's still beaming with heat!!! Thank You So MUCH!!!
My problem is the other way around lol my downstairs radiators are boiling but all upstairs aren’t working I tried turning off the downstairs radiators to force heat to upstairs but it didn’t work. The heating system is only a few months old gas
I recently bled all the radiators in my house and I couldn't figure out why there was one (1) radiator that wasn't getting hot. I followed the instructions you provided and fixed the problem. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. N.Y.
It`s ok it does not matter which side you shut down the effect will be the same. For info, the lockshield cap that fits on one of the valves when they were new was designed to be adjusted to balance the system then when the cap was reffited that radiator would be in balance with the rest of the radiators without stealing too much heat. Hope that makes sense, regards al.
Great video. Was confused after bleeding the radiators and still no fix to the problem. Followed this and rebalanced the system, and it's working great now! Thanks very much!!!
You are a life saver! This worked, my upstairs radiator was ice cold compared to the downstairs boiling hot. Turns out the system was unbalanced because i had to drain the whole system to replace the bleeder valve screws. Thank you!
Thank you. Even after bleeding i had 1 cold rad. Shut all the valves off apart from this one as you suggested and the problem rad is now boiling hot! Thanks for the tips and sharing your knowledge.
Thanks for your help. I called a plumber, but he failed to show. After listening to your advise about balancing radiators, I set to work. System works well now, thank you
Thank you so much for this! I had given up on this and had 2 very cold rooms literally for years! i feel like a right eejit! Wish I could buy you beer!
We’ve had lots of plumbing done recently, just added the last rad and it wouldn’t heat up along with one other, the rest were roasting and I’d bled them all. Tried turning the others off as you suggested and hey presto they’re red hot now. Thank you and happy Christmas!!
Had this issue today. All radiators fine with the exception of one in the kitchen. Bled the radiator slightly and then followed this video. The radiator is now steaming hot. Thanks!
After trying to bleed my downstairs radiators that always stayed half hot and half cold. Found this video via google and now my downstairs radiators are blistering hot. Genius!!!!
Thank you. I moved to a new house n the heating in the lounge didn't work, tried bled all valves n been fiddling around with no luck. Tried ur method n switching off all upstairs radiators n only leave the lounge ones on. They all warm now. Thank you very much.
My living room radiator was ice cold, it was freaky when you said it would be the living room..!! Did as you said & you sir, are a legend! Everyone who watches these kinds of videos is extremely grateful, thanks a lot buddy, working perfect now 👍🏽
Thanks for posting this. I had bled my radiators until it was just water. All radiators downstairs were cold. Looks like my system was unbalanced. I followed your advice and hey presto! Heat.
Thank you , I too had given up on a couple of radiators after removing them and flushing, but by turning off all the radiators but the furtherest one, and working backwards as you explain, I have my closest radiator burning hot on an eighth of a turn open and my furthest open all the way and burning hot too! You have helped me no end ! Thank you
Dereton comes to the rescue as always, after a extension the new radiator was struggling to keep warm followed this advice and it has worked great. Thanks for your video. I always watch your videos. Keep up the good work.
Had the council out who did this technique to get my last rad on the system (downstairs bathroom no heat at all despite bleeding). Which worked. He showed me what to do etc incase it happened again. The next day though, same again, back to no heat !!! I've been at it hours, rads off heating on etc.... once off though and it's back to cold and will not re-heat.... Left it a few days and complained.... Been trying again this evening to no avail, watched a couple of vids, none helped. Came across yours, and you mention 1 point no-one else did, nor did the bloody council worker do !!! Balancing the system !!! half turns on the rads when turning back on, and balance out so the pump is hitting the last one quicker.... Jesus, the difference it's made....!!! My boiler was kicking in every 5 minutes... It's not kicked back in for at least 20 now. The rads are so much hotter it's untrue, and more importantly, all working and getting hot together, quicker.... Thanks man, Great vids (watched another too) !!!
Had a plumber at my house scratching his head for 4 hour why these new rads wouldn't heat up. Blamed it on the valves! Thank you for your video sorted it out in under a hour.
Good advice. I had a cold radiator on my landing, it's been a problem for years. I turned the heating on then went round shutting off each radiator. As I shut off the last radiator before the cold one there was the sound of air moving and the cold radiator started to get hot. It still gets hot a year since the treatment. Thanks for your help.
Thanks for this video. Looked at many utube videos on this issue and none fixed it. Tried bleeding, knew it wasn’t that, checking the thermostat valve and balancing it no joy. Your method of turning all rads off, half a turn back on each when the problem rad warmed up worked. Yes it’s only balancing but you explained it so clearly. I’d buy you a beer if you were in the pub. Cheers🍺🍺
Thanks for this - our bathroom radiator was stone cold and we were on the verge of calling a plumber. Watched this and solved it in a couple of minutes... turned out to be the balancing thing. Invaluable!
Thank you, after 2 radiators in our house went cold after some thermostats were fitted in our lounge we couldn't work out what had happened. It must have become unbalanced as you explained as we've just turned all the other rads off and these 2 are now working. Thanks for the tip!
Thanks for the video, I got a new expansion tank fitted and the system must’ve imbalanced. Been chasing the plumber for weeks to come back and sort the radiator but done it myself with your help, thanks again!
Thank you so much it has worked brilliantly, we have spent many an hour trying to figure out why the radiator wasn’t working properly and your advice has saved many a headache.
Thank you very much for this excellent tutorial. I trust it applies if more than 1 radiator are not heating up (cold) properly in the same room. I applied your suggestion leaving open only the cold radiators on the same floor. It appears to be working. Thank you once again. Nicola
Thank you so much, you are a genius!!! Had to replace my 3 way valve, emptied, replaced, inhibited and the exact problem you mentioned happened once I refilled and reheated.. To make sure I had a good flow of pressure and water (when emptying) I initially opened both lock sheer and thermostatic valves. Your help by fully closing them upstairs and then slightly opening them, fixed the problem, and as a bonus I found the last RAD!!! which means I can drain from that in the future....THANKS AGAIN!!!
Wonderful. Worked a treat. Another video I watched (by someone else, I should add) didn't mention anything about balancing the rads, and I initially assumed my problem was therefore a dodgy TRV on the cold rad. Thanks very much.
Thanks for you're help, even the man from British Gas didn't solve why the radiators came on except the one in our living room, which is the most important, once again thanks & thanks to UA-cam.
AWESOMEEE !! thank you , what happened me was i lowered some pipes in roof space with pushfit fittings all worked except 2 radiators which would`nt bleed, could`nt figure it out, this made sense to add pressure to the remaining 2 and fixed it in seconds BRILL !!! you are the man :)
Great video again. What can help the flow of clean water sround ghe sydtem is adding the inhibitir thats in one of your videos ALSO having a filter fitted. Sometimes you got to get a new boiler as the pump has gone, with other things likely to go and its 10 years old etc.
Thank you for giving free advice, I'm hoping you can give just a bit more... I've just moved into my new house and have found all but one radiator gets heat all over, every single other one (9 in total) have cold spots in the centre and bottom. The radiator that is working properly looks brand new compared to the rest and I had to bleed it fully so I suspect it was replaced by the previous owner before moving. Should I turn all rads off in the house and turn them on in turn? or can you suggest anything else.
Thanks a lot it solved my issue. As you suggest I closed all radiators above and these down started working. Now will check the pump, if can increase the speed. I think - will be better if the pump work at higher speed.
Thank you for freely giving away knowledge that has probably taken you years to acquire, I have now subscribed to your channel, I hope you yourself get some benefit from these video's........ Thanks again Ray H.
Will try this out tomorrow, the strange thing is we had a new radiator put in and it wasn't until a few weeks passed that the one closer to the boiler went cold.
Your are right... 9/10 is that and it was that with mine too - so good to know there are people out there who know what they are talking about - Well Done and Thank You!
Nice one , old council upstairs flat with 4 runs up into the loft and down ,when I took off a radiator for decorating it wouldn't get warm again ,did as you said and balancing the system worked.
Worked perfectly, thank you! I now have a better understanding of how is distributed in the home. A question please . . is it a good idea to turn off the rads in rooms which are not occupied for long periods of time?
Thank you , I watched a few videos on this problem no fix then I saw your video which was the only one that was the right method and worked now my two radiators are working 😃
Brilliant video thanks. My problem is that I can't turn the lock shield. Radiator is quite new but the lock shield has a nut around it, and will not budge (almost as though the plumber deliberately sealed it?) The radiator is a double panelled one...gets hot at back , freezing at front.
Sounds like air stuck in the front panel, there should be a septate air bleed screw for the front panel. Just put a small spanner on the hex head showing on the valve to turn it, do not worry about the big hex nut as that is the packing gland.
hi Dereton, thanks. very good tips as always, shutting the all off didn't work unfortunatley just changed two old donwstairs rads on drained gravity fed system, the one new rad and all the others are fine. bled, rads, system and pump. the one new rad is stone cold. feed and out and cold. i am trying to avoid connecting a hose and trying to force the airlock out into the tank. any ideas? thanks.
If it is a downstairs one on a dropped pipes from the ceiling then stick a hose non the drain valve turn on the heating until other rads get hot then open the drain valve and run some water off outside until the pipes get hot then shut off the drain valve.
Good advice. Recently I had some plumbing done and the plumber moved the thermostat from my hallway into my living room. He also took the thermostatic radiator valves off the living room radiator. He also put a thermostatic radiator valve ob the hallway radiator which previously didn't have one. (he said this was the new/better way to do things). Now my living room gets really warm but the upstairs doesn't get warm enough. What should I do?
Hate to say this, but your system was right before being tampered with. Only thing you can do now is to turn the living room radiator right down on the wheel valve, but ultimately it would be best to have a thermostatic radiator valve on this radiator as wall.
Your videos are excellent - have recently drained the system to replace a valve on a radiator on refilling system none of the radiators are getting hot the boiler start and the pipes get hot up to the airing cupboard though the pump and bypass valve you can hear hammering have tried bleeding and have tried isolating all the Rads except 1 to try and push the air out no luck any ideas would be appreciated
+My Gezza You may need to crack a nut on the bypass or pump to let the air out. Other than that, run the heating and attach a hose to the drain valve and draw off for 30 second intervals this sometimes fetches the air down and out. It`s a case of keep trying different things.
I have tried everything thing you suggested and all I am getting is hottish water to the inlet of my down stairs rad. It’s cold to Luke warm on the return side. I have replaced the radiator , lock shield and trv. Bled the system countless times. Flushed system through. Put cleaner in. The Boiler is in the loft an ideal isar HE24. The radiators upstairs can get very hot if I turned them up. Tried turning all other rads off to force hot water down to rad that’s not getting hot. I am stuck with what to do next. I replaced the pump roughly 3 or 4years ago as it was leaking. Could the pump be faulty not having enough capacity to pump down stairs. Rad has never been great down stairs even after putting a new one in. Only running 4 rads up stairs a under unit fan heater down stairs and a double rad. So not exactly over the top.
It could be the pump, but it might also be something as simple as the thermostic rad valve not working properly. As you have tried all the usual suggestions, it has to be a blocked rad valve or the rad itself may need taking out side and flushing through.
Thank you very much!!! It worked!!! Now tho, I hear a glu glu glu of the water running in 2 radiators....was there maybe an air bubble that now moved somewhere else in the system?
thank you for sharing your knowledge , exactly what you said about the last radiator in the house that wasnt hot, not being balanced....that saved me a call out charge. Thankx!!!!!
Great instructions. My system is a F&E tank in loft, which i believe is a vented system. The other day took some water (about 2 large milk bottles worth) out of the system at the radiator drain points downstairs, and at the boiler return point drain valve. With system cold, Have bled air from the radiators downstairs without any problems. However, the 4 radiators upstairs, no water is coming out of any of them when the radiator bleed screw is opened. Any thoughts. Thanks
Would this apply to radiators needing bled everytime the heating is put on? We have a new boiler fitted end of August and things haven't been right since. We obviously weren't using it as much in warmer months. It's the same two downstairs and same 3 upstairs which keep needing bled. Not sure where the air keeps coming from if it has been bled. Thanks in advance.
Hello sir. I have a question about my new ideal boiler. Just had it fitted recently and now theres a problem, the engineers can not figure out what exactly what the fault is because they are just giving out guesses what could be wrong. Was wondering if you can help me find the answer. I get hot water upstairs where the boiler is but not anywhere else in the house. The heating works perfectly fine except for the furthest away radiator (which i will try to fix what you just advised in this video). I was told it doesnt need a diverter valve because the hot water works fine upstairs and so does radiators. Some have told me to try changing the faulty tap in the toilet which i have but still same problem. Some have said could be wrong installation of pipe system. You got any ideas what could be wrong. This issue only lasts for about a day and then everything is back to normal until it starts again after a week or so.
Sorry, without coming in and looking at your plumbing system I can only guess. Possible airlock randomly occurring, after bath used. Or blockage in the feed to the tap that clears for a while, these are of course just possibilities. Did you fit a brand new tap or a second hand one?
@@dereton33 ooooh ok, that explains why it didn't work last night then ! Thanks for replying. Looks like I need to budget an hour to run around with the spanner lol, cheers
Hello Just a quick question Iv'e got an extension with 5 new rads 2 up 3 downstairs the 3 rads downstairs won't heat if I turn all the rads off they heat but very slowly and then when I put the others on they cold down again Tried the things you said on your video many thanks
Hi Edwin , I think you will need to balance them , I have a video on my channel for that , if that does not work then you may need a new pump , ( you can try turning the speed up to 3 ) failing that if these rads in the extension have been added to the rads you have already in your house , then your boiler may well be under powered. Kind regards, al.
HI dereton33, we have two radiator that are 3 years old, the pipes going to them are really hot but the 2 rads are still cold, there is no air in them, could it be faulty thermo states as they both do have these. All the other are lovely and hot. The boiler is 3 years old also. Any suggestions please.
thanks for that, it ended up being an airlock and the valves were sticking. Also the header tank was empty so we had the value on that replaced now working lovely.
I wonder why bathroom rads seem to always rust at the bottom? BTW in our house, it is the downstairs rads, on one side of the house, which tend to be the hottest. I guess it just depends how they are plumbed. But balancing does seem to be the key. We only had TRV's upstairs, so I've recently installed them on all but one of the downstairs rads.

Hi Mark, the radiators are blocked with sludge, drain down the system and add cleaner followed by inhibitor, that usually does the trick.
+dereton33 Thank you very much, I'll do just that.
Thank you for this - the third way solved our problem!
just when i thought id have to pay out some more money, i owe a thanks to this guy! Much appreciated
No problem.
Legend! It worked. As soon as I turned the rest off it was hot within 1 minute. Thank you.
No problem
Thanks a lot it solved my issue. As you suggest I closed all radiators above and these down started working. Now will check the pump, if can increase the speed. I think - will be better if the pump work at higher speed.
Glad it helped
your a legend mate! tried everything else then came across your video, it worked straight away! thanks champ i owe you a beer!
No problem. PS it`s John Smiths.
Thank you sir 🙏 got my radiators working again, and they are perfectly balanced now 👌
No problem.
Thank you for freely giving away knowledge that has probably taken you years to acquire, I have now subscribed to your channel, I hope you yourself get some benefit from these video's........
Thanks again Ray H.
+Ray Hindle Thanks Ray, I really love to give my years of knowledge freely to those that can use it.
Right on!
Nice one , old council upstairs flat with 4 runs up into the loft and down ,when I took off a radiator for decorating it wouldn't get warm again ,did as you said and balancing the system worked.
Thats great.
Worked perfectly, thank you! I now have a better understanding of how is distributed in the home. A question please . . is it a good idea to turn off the rads in rooms which are not occupied for long periods of time?
Yes.
Thankyou. I’m going to try to balance them tomorrow. I’ve got 1 downstairs getting lukewarm and one that’s stone cold. All other rads are hot.
Good luck!
Thank you , I watched a few videos on this problem no fix then I saw your video which was the only one that was the right method and worked now my two radiators are working 😃
That`s great Julie.
Great tip. Just saved me a whole lot of bother after getting a new boiler fitted. Thanks.
No problem.
Fantastic! I did as you advised and the radiator is back to normal. Thank you!
hi Dereton, thanks. very good tips as always, shutting the all off didn't work unfortunatley just changed two old donwstairs rads on drained gravity fed system, the one new rad and all the others are fine. bled, rads, system and pump. the one new rad is stone cold. feed and out and cold. i am trying to avoid connecting a hose and trying to force the airlock out into the tank. any ideas? thanks.
If it is a downstairs one on a dropped pipes from the ceiling then stick a hose non the drain valve turn on the heating until other rads get hot then open the drain valve and run some water off outside until the pipes get hot then shut off the drain valve.
Thanks. I Will try this. I have three rads in the loft two are working but one is not.
What a Guy....Awesome Geezer !!! You are a star !!!
Thanks, your solution cured our bathroom towel rail that was not heating up.
No problem.
Thank you. It worked!!! My system was unbalanced. Excellent advice. Thanks again.
No problem.
Balancing the rads worked a treat. Thank you v much.
You're welcome!
God knows how this video got a thumbs down??? But I’m giving it a fat thumbs up 👍🏻
Plumbers that have lost work due to me giving trade secrets away.
Thanks for your video. Its so easy when you know how. You saved me a few bob.
thanks chap . new pump is firing them all up nicely
Thank you very much!!! It worked!!!
Now tho, I hear a glu glu glu of the water running in 2 radiators....was there maybe an air bubble that now moved somewhere else in the system?
Try bleeding the radiators.
@@dereton33 had to let a lot of water and eventually some air, but it worked! thanks!
Your a legend thankyou , all radiators working again after balancing .Happy New year to you sir
Thanks, you too!
you just saved me call-out charge as i only have boiler cover.
thank you very much.
keep up the good work.
No problem.
thank you for sharing your knowledge , exactly what you said about the last radiator in the house that wasnt hot, not being balanced....that saved me a call out charge. Thankx!!!!!
No problem.
Hi to switch off the radiators upstairs do i need to close the valves both side or just rturn valve ??
Great instructions.
My system is a F&E tank in loft, which i believe is a vented system. The other day took some water (about 2 large milk bottles worth) out of the system at the radiator drain points downstairs, and at the boiler return point drain valve. With system cold, Have bled air from the radiators downstairs without any problems. However, the 4 radiators upstairs, no water is coming out of any of them when the radiator bleed screw is opened.
Any thoughts. Thanks
Roof tank valve in the F and E tank is jammed off. Go up and give it a wiggle.
Amazing, you were spot on. The ball in the F&E tank was defying gravity, and the tank was empty. A little wiggle sorted that out. Thanks
No problem.
You have air being drawn in from the expansion tank. Try turning the pump down to a slower speed
@dereton33 hi. What would cause the explanation tank to heat up its rising up from the feed pipe
Do u have to do this everytime or does it solve the problem permanently?
No if you jeep getting air then there is a problem.
Just used this video to help me with my issue and worked. Fantastic! Thanks
No problem
Question - when we turn off all the radiators, is this done using the thermostatic valve or the lock shield valve?
The lockshield valve.
@@dereton33 ooooh ok, that explains why it didn't work last night then ! Thanks for replying.
Looks like I need to budget an hour to run around with the spanner lol, cheers
Thanks mate... The air lock technique worked perfectly.
No problem 👍
Mate,
thank you very much for sharing this, you have just saved me a few bob calling out a plumber that I can bot afford.
I owe you a pint mate.
That`s ok Simon.
Hello Just a quick question Iv'e got an extension with 5 new rads 2 up 3 downstairs the 3 rads downstairs won't heat
if I turn all the rads off they heat but very slowly and then when I put the others on they cold down again
Tried the things you said on your video
many thanks
Hi Edwin , I think you will need to balance them , I have a video on my channel for that , if that does not work then you may need a new pump , ( you can try turning the speed up to 3 ) failing that if these rads in the extension have been added to the rads you have already in your house , then your boiler may well be under powered.
Kind regards,
al.
Thanks for that. I have tried everything and was about to bin the radiator. Cheers
No problem 👍
HI dereton33, we have two radiator that are 3 years old, the pipes going to them are really hot but the 2 rads are still cold, there is no air in them, could it be faulty thermo states as they both do have these. All the other are lovely and hot. The boiler is 3 years old also. Any suggestions please.
Yes I would certainly look at the rad valves first. If no luck then look at rebalancing the system.
thanks for that, it ended up being an airlock and the valves were sticking.
