Each video that I've seen on these has given me additional insights into how this works (thanks for mentioning ALC by the way... and how the messages sequence automatically). I managed to make a few FT8 contacts last night... took me a minute to figure out why nobody was answering until I figured out that I had the computer sound-card output going through the laptop speakers instead of the USB... but I noticed the transmitter wasn't putting out any power. I *had* already dealt with the network time issue, so I was pretty sure I was OK there. I think it may be important to remember if you are using a USB radio that if you take the computer away from the radio and put it back, make sure that the settings are still linked to USB devices and haven't "reverted". Also thanks for mentioning how you view the mileage to the remote station... I had been looking for it in the confirmation box (where it isn't - but that might be a good enhancement to the software). +dentron160 I believe it’s mostly because of the low sunspot number as we are approaching the bottom of the cycle. FT8 is a lot more robust than sideband or even CW and being able to make contacts under poor conditions is, in part, what is driving the FT8 boom. With FT4 coming to a full release soon, the digital modes will be that much stronger.
