Gary, you come across as a real genuine guy, .... and very easy to follow as you describe what you are doing... love the plain english, and basic way in which you explain... far too many folk go drifting along a totally different path... and thank you for that... Gridtracker is a great addition to your WSJT-X FT8 workings
I'm a full ICOM FT8/FT4 nut.
Use these with great success, 7100, 7300 and 9700, all bands 40m to 23cms
Have now got the 705 but yet to use it on anything but it should be just as good.
It's amazing what can be worked even in the low solar cycle.
One tip.
Keep checking your transmit slot is clear, red goalposts, quite often other strong stations get on top of you
and then blow your chance with DX.

Hi Gaz thanks for the video, I use Net time for wsjt-x and install and forget. I notice you are in split mode (fake it) I only use this in dx expedition mode F/H. Thanks and enjoy ft8.
Nice video Gary. I was having fun with FT8 after getting through all the settings setup. Then I upgraded the firmware on my FT-991A and lost all the settings and memories, GRRR!
Hi Garry, look above the waterfall for the small horizontal red line, this shows where you are transmitting in the FT8 spectrum, move this line to a space where there is no activity. This gets more important when the band is busy, then you will be heard better. You can also try the decode modes, normal, deep etc. One idea for a good video is how to remote the 705, so you can use it in another room via your home LAN/wifi, not sure what software there is for this, maybe some one has an SDR application end that could be used?

re the comment about ft8 power/pa damage ,hence why i use my 7610 with my spe 1.3kfa, never drive any more than 9% into linears, oh btw kenwood ts590 super easy to setup on ft8/ft4 download kenwood usb sound drivers install cuple of selection in the radio menu one std usb lead ,job done JA qsos galore :)
Good video Gary, just one question, why dont you want to put your output up much and what makes you think you will blow your rig? I use my 705 on FT8 and often run at 10w through an alex loop with no problems.?
I work for a HamRadio outlet, I deal with the repairs and see what ft8 can do to pa transistors and filters ... rule of thumb don’t exceed AM rating of the radio.. Gaz
@@TheGazLab I didnt realise that the output on AM is only 2.5w, just read the manual, but it says SSB is 10w? Or am I missing something else in the manual? I only use FT8, so want to make sure I'm doing it right.
@@sptvids it’s wise to not run you pa’s flat out on ft8.. I can’t tell you how to play radio :-)
Gaz, dont forget to set the audio level to just activate the ALC . I usually set mine one notch below the ALC activation on my 7300. Good luck 👍 73

@@TheGazLab power level slider , right hand side , Its easy to overdrive the audio with the power level adjustment and cause interference in the ft8 spectrum . 👍👍

@@TheGazLab Another tip is to look at the waterfall and set your audio to a clear slot , then tick the box for " hold tx freq" . 40m , 20m can be a it congested at times and finding a clear audio freq problematic 😀
Great tips from @Jeff G8SEI - Another tip @The Gaz Lab - don't forget to open BandWidth Filter to the full 3.6k so can see the whole of the band on the scope in WSJT-X - Press and hold FIL on 7300 / 705 and then click on BW then use the main dial to adjust. M7KWB - 73

I have a IC7300 and a FTDX3000 I prefer the FTDX3000 for simplicity
Hi You mentioned the 330S antenna and said it was good for RX, how was it on TX and you also mentioned the BT6W but did not expand on its performance, I have tried to find it but no luck was it a BTV-6?
The wd330s is a good all around antenna I was very impressed considering it’s size.. the bb6w is awful on TX .. hope that helps.. gaz

I will use it as a propagation tool, or for some weak stations that are 10,000kms from me, but no interest in just filling up a logbook with those that I can just pick up the microphone to... working EU on FT8 has zero interest to me...

Working on FT-8 is like calling someone on a cell connection anyone can do it .Try working rare DX on SSB phone whole different ball game..

As far as I know that’s the case.. depending on your view most new radios have a computer inside, so no getting away from it really.. closest you will get to an all in one solution would be the sun sdr MB1..
