To make sure your audience is safe you should state to unplug your microwave from the power supply and then after you remove the access you should immediately discharge the high voltage capacitor. I worked for an appliance repair outfit years ago and the owner showed me a small burn hole that went straight through his index fingernail and exited the bottom of his fingertip due to not discharging the capacitor. I know you showed that after you were about done.
Joseph Folsom My teacher tought me from first day Never ever put your grip at the tips As a caution you discharge any type of capacitor. With screw driver...
Good job. That one was a little easier because your visual inspection showed the high voltage diode as being damaged. Not to put too fine a point on it, and it doesn't save all that much time so it doesn't matter, but the two connections of the magnatron when checked for condinuity will show very low resistance, so checking only one of those points to ground for leakage is necessary. If one of them is grounded, you'll see both of them as grounded because they have a low resistance between the connection points. The same goes for checking a transformer for being grounded where it shouldn't. (some transformers used in microwave ovens will have a winding that's grounded to the core internally). I agree with the other comments that all caps should be discharged first before any testing or touching.. Some will jam a screwdriver into the connection which depending on the charge will create a spark or simply discharge. Drawing a spark can burn the connection, or your screwdriver tip. It's better to have a resistor for doing that on some clip leads and clip one side to the shaft of your screwdriver. One other point to mention is that checking a high voltage diode using diode check on a multimeter will not always work on those diodes due to the forward voltage drop. You could get an infinite resistance reading in both directions that could cause one to mistakenly assume the diode is open. Better to connect a 9 volt battery in series and then measure the voltage drop in both directions. In one direction you'll get a few volts drop off the battery voltage, in the other polarity direction you'll get a very small voltage drop usually in the millivolts. This would reflect a GOOD diode.
great. thanks for watching my videos. I made those videos for you all so you can fix your microwave for yourself and save lots of money. share the videos to friends and family who might need some help.
Use a pliers with insulated handles. the capacitor have very high voltage that could electrocute you if touch bear hands. Use the plier to remove the wires from the capacitor terminals. the use a insulated screwdriver to remove the screw that hold the clamp and capacitor it place.
Good video, but not first showing the shorting of the capacitor before anything else is a mistake in presentation. I still however learn't or rather confirmed the manner in which these capacitors are discharged. I presume 5 seconds should be enough to discharge but even that would be nice to hear because there's no visible difference to see when the charge .NOT the current, has totally drained. Are the diodes fairly interchangable between models, I presume so.
