Just an endless onslaught of violence and evil. Media seldom covers anything uplifting anymore. We are desensitized by the frequency of these events and watching from the comfort of home. It bodes horribly for the future.
Federico illa yep, mass manipulation. We humans sadly tend to instinctively react according to our emotions rather than according to rationale or logic; and that does not help us at all and rather helps the media. That, and the rise of identity politics which divides and furthers us from becoming more progressive society. Civilizations never progressed when people where radically seperated by political views and beliefs, on the contrary, that is a perfect catalyst for chaos and destruction of a progressive society.
Before the internet I figured everyone was fairly sane and were at least competent. After the internet I have realized how unhinged huge groups of people are.
I'm an American living in New Zealand at the time of all of this. My experience here after the shooting has been so different than being in America after any shooting. It's brought this country extremely close together, I haven't even seen a single local news source talk about the shooter or say his name. Only news about the good coming out of this, how people are supporting the Muslim community and that we are all in this land and no one is an invader. It's extremely beautiful and I wish that news was making headlines in America. About the moment of silences we have had since, the amount of flowers spread around Mosques, just the overwhelming support by the prime minister. It's insane. I just want to share this side of the story, America is getting skewed. I highly recommend looking at some local NZ news sources to see the beauty of people here! America has so much to learn from this.
I was outside at my school (Christs College) when the shooting happened I could hear the shots very clearly as we were less than a km away, scariest moment of my life probably.

Twitter is a fucking shithole. I deleted my account years ago only few days after I created an account as soon as I realized what it is. That shit should be fucking shut down
That is why many media shows are refusing to give these killers air time and are not mentioning their names, reading their statements, or promoting their videos. Rather, responsible folks are commenting negatively about this cold blooded and murderous event.
I think the other issue is that SM and websites works as an amplifier for one's opinions. If I like borderline fanatic stuff on any political level, I will amp my website feed and my social media feed with that stuff and it will literally be all I ever see and it will distort my views.
No, the problem with social media is tons of people can get offended by one person, not the other way around. The internet is not and will never be a safe place regardless of your position or politics. If people are seriously getting outraged by stuff some guy is saying on the internet they should probably stay off the net
I have never been more proud to be a New Zealander. The amount of love and passion shown over the last week has absolutely amazed me. People from all corners of the the country irrespective of their race or religion have come together and showed respect and kindness toward the muslim community. This act of hate has spawned a huge amount of love that is very touching.
You should be proud to be a New Zealander! I was so taken back by Jacinda Ardern's handling of the attack, she didn't look at it like a one-off "shooting" but on the citizens of her country and instead of talking.. she actually banned military grade assualt rifles. And even had a pop a Donald Trump for his anti-Islamic rhetoric! The way NZ handled Covid too was far better than many others! More world leaders should aspire to be like Jacinda!

I was just thinking that. In New Zealand we have all banded together seen no divide here at all. Its people in places like america that comment on videos all arguing and stuff.
It's interesting to hear Joe say 'we're numb.' I assure you the people of New Zealand weren't numb. I'm sure Joe was talking from an American perspective, but we were horrified when we saw what happened. We called for action, and we got it. It is a uniquely American perspective to view these terrible actions and feel a sense of weariness overcome feelings of sheer revulsion and disgust.
action for what? Up until a few days ago, NZ was an example of effective gun laws. 1 incident in 24 years does not mean the laws are ineffective. Now you've followed a ridiculous trend to destroy the rights of people who had nothing to do with this incident - the guy wasn't even a New Zealander.
Speak for yourself, I'm not horrified. I'm furious that a deranged Aussie single-handedly ruined our political environment forever and the rest of New Zealand plays into his hand.
What action? Stripping citizens of free speech and what little gun rights they have? it is foolish to think that government can solve all your problems.

People need to unplug for a while. Take a hike, literally. Nepotism and lateral violence seem to be the common function of people these days via social media.
nah, you just gotta think rational, realize the world was way worse in the past but what's new is that we know about every crime around the world and think the world is getting worse, we're doomed, ww3 is coming or some other bullshit because all you see is violence and bad stuff. (or want to see) 3 people killed in the Netherlands yesterday or so, all over the news 24/7, people start acting like apocalyptic times are coming lmao, 40.000 (!) people just in the USA die EVERY year in traffic accidents, no big deal, a few years ago in Russia 200.000 people died from drug overdoses in one single year, where's the news.
Do you not think it is important to evaluate the reasons behind why something like this could happen to prevent it from occurring 50 more times? What you're saying is if a kid is getting bullied everyday in school for being fat and it gets worse to the point he retaliates and puts the main bully in a coma, then THAT fat kid needs to be punished for his actions, what a terrible person right? .............Dismissing the whole reasoning behind it, something tells me the NZ shooter was a normal guy and there are thousands if not hundreds of thousands who have had the same thoughts he had expressed in his manifesto.
This is very true....immediately after a mass shooting happens or a terrorist attack we immediately start blaming everyone else...all change begins with the individual and how we treat each other.
Took me so long to remember the word 'Mosque' just then... I actually had to google "What is a Muslim's place of worship called?".. When I saw the answer I just face palmed at myself :L
I am a new Zealander and I just want to add a couple points. - the main shooter is an Australian who had been living in new Zealand for a little while. He has premeditated / planned this attack for two years and his manifesto clearly said he wanted to wipe out Muslims and divide - the reason why people say "f your thoughts and prayers" is because from our point of view, people seem to say " thoughts and prayers" but don't make any action gun control wise to prevent another one. My pm Jacinda Arden has now banned semi automatics and we have gotten stricter in our gun laws (they already are strict) - as much as you explained he was a troll, he had written all over his gun in white supremacist signs and symbols which connect to other right extremists. - we in nz were starting to get desensitized to American shootings but not in new Zealand. We are very raw still from the shooting and for us 51 people dying is the equivalent per capita to roughly 3500 people in the US.
@JW Pev Isn't it weird how these massacres all happen in places where everyone is defenseless? Making more people defenseless by law is probably not the best idea
the white supremacy gesture the guy made was essentially trolling. his entire thing (if you read the manifesto) was to divide people, and the majority of people fell right into that trap.
@Harry Hhhhjtfhn totally my bad i should have put it in quotes or at least explained that it's meaning has been changed just to fit certain narratives. but the overall point stands: the guy took something topical and used it to fuck with people's heads
@@johnwright2911 Using the OK sign as a white supremacy sign is a joke / social experiment that was completely made up and popularized by people on 4chan. It's their way of saying that in todays time anything can be racist as long as you declare it as such. In all of this confusion and focus on the killer, let's not forget the people who lost their lives. Reafing their stories helps build compassion and put in perspective just how horrific this act was.
I only share stories of the victims, the heroes and the support. The terrorist should be starved of all the attention he craves, that was his other goal.
I'm just saying that the MSM is pointing the finger at every one and causing division between people, I literally just watched Stephen Colbert blame pretty much the whole thing on Trump. That's exactly what the shooter wanted, to cause division.
It's only going to get worse in coming weeks. People will stop discussing him as a "troll" or even that he was 100% aware of the publics snap reaction efforts on the matter. We are just going to be left with another attack on a list. People will remember him as an entry in a dataset "NZ, Christchurch shooting, 47 dead"
Joe I am a kiwi. There is less division in New Zealand after this event. It has brought the country together. You heard it here. From someone who actually lives in the country
@Bloodybleeder a dead body is naturally interesting to most people the same way that sex is interesting regardless of who is having it. IT has nothing to do with being "enjoyed" its just fascinating. A mass killing of innocents in a mosque cannot be compared to a single dead body from an execution or accident here and there. A massacre is horrifying to anyone that is not mentally unstable and free of psychological issues. This is why PTSD is so big in the military, its a coping mechanism of sorts. Your dumb ass is trying to trivialize the event with the Tu Quoque logical fallacy. Dont go there
@@httohot Tell me exactly how and in what world would any sane person be "fascinated" by a single execution while horrified by a mass shooting. Like if you have a moral comas so fucked up then I honestly feel for you. @Bloodybleeder Bloodybleeder your head is so up your ass that you cant tell the difference between a guy getting killed in public and a bunch of innocents being mowed down by gunfire. NO PLACE IN THE WORLD has mass killing of innocents as a normal occurrence. IF IT WERE NORMAL THERE WOULD BE NO WAR REFUGEES EVER!! I come from Nigeria, I have volunteered at a free clinic with christians, in a church during the Islamic boko harram bombings in Jos and Wari last year. This area was where the majority of the church bombings took place and I there with my mom against my dad's vehement protests. (edit:I worked in Nigeria for 2 years) Bombings were never a regular occurrence most importantly IT WAS NEVER CONSIDERED NORMAL to see a church bombing. Videos may have been posted but EVERYONE was horrified. NO ONE tried to trivialize it. The videos of the body parts being collected after bombings had people talking in a disgusted serious manner not a trivial one. MASS KILLINGS WERE NEVER NORMALIZED FOOL!! YOU and the Original Commentor, are the ones trying to make it seem like mass killings are normal occurrence. You make everyday life in these regions seem wilder than they are in your head just like the media would have you believe. Its not virtue signalling its getting people to not look at these countries like people are getting mowed down doesn't bother the majority of these people seriously! IF IT IS HAPPENING EVERYDAY THEN LIKE I SAID SOMETHING IS WRONG/NOT NORMAL!!!!!! sidenote: Cannibalism is not normal and is usually associated with a lack of protein in the surrounding environment. That is why it is seen mostly on islands or deserts/plains areas. One of the reasons its an objectively BAD PRACTICE is that many indestructible incurable brain virus come from cannibalized tissues in the brain called prions. They cant be cooked away at any temperature or degraded by varying ph levels. Also keep in mind that spiritual rituals come after a behavior arises like how the muslim Eid-ul-Azha holiday is like a harvest like religious holiday that just so happens to be in harvest season.

The news needs to go back to being objective. We get opinion news which is garbage. Probably the best news hour block is PBS's new hour. They tell you the event not followed by the opinion of the host. That's the news. They give me the event in plain terms, then I can draw my conclusions
@@garoscar2695 Everything you say is subjective, it can't be otherwise unless you adopt a completely indifferent and raw mindset towards the issue you're writing on. That's very difficult to accomplish in most situations, let alone delicate ones like this mass shooting. Much easier is to yourself, as a consumer of that information to learn from different sources and focus on the facts being presented and eventually you'll start getting a clearer and clearer picture. Besides, you don't know just how "objective" the objective news would be, so you'd need to do your own research regardless unless you want to trust them blindly.
I agree. When Joe mentioned the idea of a website with bulletproof media... that doesn't exist. I follow a lot of newspapers I like and I've been a newspaper reporter myself, but you should always be skeptical. I advised people to be skeptical of my articles. You should never read the news and think "This is 100% for sure what happened." You should read the news, take it as a possible thing that happened, and if you're interested then examine the evidence that the article uses to support the story.
@powrslave73757 "We used to do it in the 80’s in high school. It was a game, that’s all." I don't think you are fully listening to what is going on. It is a game, but it has also been co-opted as a white supremacy sign. I hope you realise that. It's just objectively true.
@powrslave73757 "Yeah I get that some assholes are trying to use it, but they’re just assholes.Racists and white supremacy are a dying breed. They estimated that there are 40,000 Neo-Nazis left in the US out of 325 million people so I’m not worried about them trying to steal a stupid hand gesture." Seems like you just admitted everything that everyone is saying. No one else is disputing anything you said here. It has been coopted by white supremacists and so in the contexts in which a white supremacist uses that gesture it is safe to assume he is using that gesture as a white supremacist gesture and not as a fucking game.

my girlfriend's sister was in newchurch and we weren't able to find out if she was okay for several hours after. We got desperate and ended up watching the video to see if it was the temple she would have been at and it was horrific.
I live in Christchurch, five minutes away from where the shootings happened. It is something that we never imagined would happen in our country. The shooter wanted to create division within race and religion. Despite his efforts the exact opposite had happened in both our city and our nation as a whole. Muslim, Christian, everyone, has taken a stand against the hate and chosen to band together. What people think on Twitter about pewdiepie's relation to the shooter is so far removed from what is actually happening here in the lives of the people affected. Love your neighbour.
Laplace the facts are everything he just said is true, watch the full video and prove any of the things he said wrong. I'll gladly wait for your proof.
I mean, any innocents getting killed is horrible. It's not a competition here! I think what shocked people about the NZ story was that it happened in a first-world country and that Muslims - who are usually vilified - were victims this time around.
News is not that hard to figure out. Listen to it. Listen to the Who, what, where, and when. Once you start hearing the why (opinions), stop listening!
“Why” in a news story is not necessarily an opinion. As an ex news reporter I reported on many stories that required the “why” in order to tell the full story. Granted, offering an opinion in a news story makes it an editorial n should not b part of a newscast.
@@butternuts3656 There is a semblance of journalism that goes into most stories on cable news. Stories are based on fact. The issue is when pundits begin to expand upon what they are reporting. You can call out CNN for their bias, but typically they are based on real events. Most of the time people have issues with the segments of a broadcast geared towards opinion. Some people just dont know how to differentiate between the two anymore.
but you can "self-select" to examine information that goes against what you already believe... being able to "self-select" here doesn't necessarily mean that you will always be confirming your first basic notions about things. when it comes to being right or wrong, people generally need to feel like they have reached their own conclusions. if they don't feel that way, then they can't do the right thing, or they can't see why they were wrong. with regards to the NZ shooter, i see how what you're saying makes sense... he "self-selected" to be on 4chan, and have his views confirmed by strangers online. the problem with what you're saying is that it isn't 4chan's fault, or liveleak's, or whatever... the shooter absolutely would have done this or something else regardless of those sites existing, because the fear that he felt (the fear that white people are losing their cultural dominance) is so unbelievably palpable in western society that we do not need websites to feel it... one example is the way that whites must defend themselves when they are accused of racism. someone's entire career, or character can be destroyed by this simple accusation, and the accuser doesn't always have to suffer consequences if they are proven wrong. i'm not saying its right or wrong, but it is undeniably everywhere. this is why we need things like universal basic income, and free education (for those that demonstrate basic aptitude) because then our culture will not need to rely on white dominance for structure. we can all have a much more fair try at life straight from birth... but thats it. from there, its back to "land of the free," not "land of the fair." i hope this shooter is punished greatly for the lives that he destroyed.

The Dalai Lama suggests that all public schools include classes in compassion to the curriculum. Taught in a secular way but mandatory like math and language. I think it would have a profoundly positive effect on society.
Sounds to me like more authoritarian imposition of one single way of what “compassion” is. Do you ruin the lives of people who fail this class? My country’s education syllabus included Moral Studies which was absolutely worthless, devolved to scoring on stuff like spelling of, and grammatical structure of values (eg good-hearted - hyphenated? Other particles attached to it?) there’s also the likelihood it becomes a big waste of time and money like that.
compassion is easy if you have a good attitude, except most people have shitty negative attitudes about life in general. a persons attitudes affect everything they do. people don't need to learn compassion, they need to work on the space between their ears, then compassion will come naturally.
@@Shinn27 Authoritarian compassion? Oh please! Compassion has a straight forward definition. If you are promoting compassion you aren't authoritarian. It doesn't fit. Working to create a society that has less cruel selfish people that can't see beyond the end of their nose, is not a waste of money. It's not guaranteed to work, because people don't generally know how to teach it, but that is no reason not to try. This stuff only seems political if you are some kind of psychopath.

- the main shooter is an Australian who had been living in new Zealand for a little while. He has premeditated / planned this attack for two years and his manifesto clearly said he wanted to wipe out Muslims and divide
- the reason why people say "f your thoughts and prayers" is because from our point of view, people seem to say " thoughts and prayers" but don't make any action gun control wise to prevent another one. My pm Jacinda Arden has now banned semi automatics and we have gotten stricter in our gun laws (they already are strict)
- as much as you explained he was a troll, he had written all over his gun in white supremacist signs and symbols which connect to other right extremists.
- we in nz were starting to get desensitized to American shootings but not in new Zealand. We are very raw still from the shooting and for us 51 people dying is the equivalent per capita to roughly 3500 people in the US.

Events like these tend to divide the weak and unite the strong

"How could you not be horrified" well, there are a lot of people who are not, trust me.

People die everyday. Massacres of peaceful innocents do not. If a massacre of innocents does not horrify you on some level there is something wrong.
I am not standing on any more high ground. I am just responding to someone who is trying to compare the normal fascination with death in face book posts with people not being horrified at a massacre
@@httohot tv shows and live executions are just a tad different..you know as in one you know noone was hurt and in the other you know there was a human life taken.

Saying that it definitly does make a difference if it happens to people you feel connected to somewhere near you or if it happens to people you have no business with on the other side of the world. For example I would definitly feal worse if I heard 5 people got gunned down in my town than 40 getting killed on other side of the world. Might be fucked up but it is only normal. If it wouldnt be the case we would be horrified every second of our existance over all the suffering and death going on arouns the world every moment and one just cant exist thaf way.
This area was where the majority of the church bombings took place and I there with my mom

(edit:I worked in Nigeria for 2 years)
Bombings were never a regular occurrence most importantly IT WAS NEVER CONSIDERED NORMAL to see a church bombing.

J.R. “I don’t think we’re getting stupider.”
even investigative journalism still has biases. Its completely natural for biases to exist.
But we need good pillars of information.
So do medical workers, but they do their job regardless of their opinion of the patient.
The Intercept, TYT, Secular Talk

It was a game, that’s all."
I don't think you are fully listening to what is going on. It is a game, but it has also been co-opted as a white supremacy sign. I hope you realise that. It's just objectively true.
Adam Bernstein it’s quite literally just a joke from 4chan that the media gobbled up and believed.
If you think that's a white supremacist thing you're an npc cause everyone did that shit in school I'm in college and I still see people do it haha.

Seems like you just admitted everything that everyone is saying. No one else is disputing anything you said here. It has been coopted by white supremacists and so in the contexts in which a white supremacist uses that gesture it is safe to assume he is using that gesture as a white supremacist gesture and not as a fucking game.

Yeah especially the Christian Nigerians that massacred Muslims!
Yes it happened.
Crickets on Western terrorism in Muslim lands yes
I mean, any innocents getting killed is horrible. It's not a competition here! I think what shocked people about the NZ story was that it happened in a first-world country and that Muslims - who are usually vilified - were victims this time around.
News is not that hard to figure out. Listen to it. Listen to the Who, what, where, and when. Once you start hearing the why (opinions), stop listening!
I like that.
Plain and simple! You got it right ✔️
Not quite. When you see the cnn logo it’s probably a good time to change the channel or tune out. None of the ws are legit when they write the stories
Being self-selecting in the information that you're consuming just Reinforce's what you already think! It's a circular process.
but you can "self-select" to examine information that goes against what you already believe... being able to "self-select" here doesn't necessarily mean that you will always be confirming your first basic notions about things. when it comes to being right or wrong, people generally need to feel like they have reached their own conclusions. if they don't feel that way, then they can't do the right thing, or they can't see why they were wrong. with regards to the NZ shooter, i see how what you're saying makes sense... he "self-selected" to be on 4chan, and have his views confirmed by strangers online. the problem with what you're saying is that it isn't 4chan's fault, or liveleak's, or whatever... the shooter absolutely would have done this or something else regardless of those sites existing, because the fear that he felt (the fear that white people are losing their cultural dominance) is so unbelievably palpable in western society that we do not need websites to feel it... one example is the way that whites must defend themselves when they are accused of racism. someone's entire career, or character can be destroyed by this simple accusation, and the accuser doesn't always have to suffer consequences if they are proven wrong. i'm not saying its right or wrong, but it is undeniably everywhere. this is why we need things like universal basic income, and free education (for those that demonstrate basic aptitude) because then our culture will not need to rely on white dominance for structure. we can all have a much more fair try at life straight from birth... but thats it. from there, its back to "land of the free," not "land of the fair." i hope this shooter is punished greatly for the lives that he destroyed.
Did anyone else hear Ben Anderson talking and immediately think Totalbiscuit had been talking? Sounds just like him

Really? You don't think schools already teach compassion, acceptance, non-violence, etc.? What rock you living under?
compassion is easy if you have a good attitude, except most people have shitty negative attitudes about life in general. a persons attitudes affect everything they do. people don't need to learn compassion, they need to work on the space between their ears, then compassion will come naturally.
Maybe he should start with his own monks then they might stop raping kids!
