As a Bartender in LA, I am asked if I want to be an actor on a daily basis. When I tell them, "No, I'm a 5th generation Bartender. This is MY career."
They look at me with both pity and disbelief.
So weird.
Fake people are always bewildered by real people.
@@herbertthewaterrat truer words have never been spoken
I'm kinda jealous of having a career like that. Like a craft.
I’ve had and seen the opposite effect across the U.S. where you’ll receive looks of bewilderment if you want to be an actor or anything artistic haha. So in a way LA is a “safespace” for people with that kind of artistic pursuit but it’s ironic and moronic that people essentially flip the switch and do the same back to people like you, but that’s how people are… very tribal
Same here, I walk around in fly clothes and everyone assumes I’m a rapper. But I’m in sales lol
Everything he is describing applies to corporate culture as well.
Exactly. The whole time, I was thinking "wait... he really believes this phenomenon is different from any corporate job interview, in any area of the country (or world for that matter), for the past several decades?"
On top of that, imagine choosing this particular industry (of acting/entertainment) where you're *constantly* applying for job-after-job...where you know beforehand that each job is *designed* to last a very limited amount of time...where you are forced to move on to the next gig. Um, yes, you tell your potential employers what you know they want to hear. It's not at all exclusive to L.A. or Hollywood.
@@toddmargeson3330 jobs last, acting and fame don't. Hollywood is way more corrosive.
Josh, can't tell if your reply was intended to be a rebuttal of my comment or not, but your first sentence is a reinforcement of my last paragraph, and the underlying point: acting/entertainment jobs don't last (and are that way by design), which is different from "normal" jobs. Yet even with normal, long-lasting career jobs, people (applicants) posture disingenuously to land the job. So of *course* the same is going to happen in a line of work where every job is fleeting by design.
As for your second sentence, that may or may not be true; I have no personal experience in that.
@@joshuatunis6732 well it clearly does for some people
Joe probably hasn't had to interview for a job outside entertainment (or even inside entertainment) for a long time. He probably has forgotten what a corporate job interview is like.
This is everywhere now though. Look at the reverence for athletes. I used to work for a Fortune 50 company & saw the CEO of the company on the elevator. You weren't allowed to talk to him or even look in his direction. It's power syndrome. It's not just Hollywood. People with power are pretty much a-holes everywhere.
Damn you couldn’t even look in his direction, what kind of narcissistic shit is that
Digusting, these ceos need a reality check. Cant even look in his direction..smh these guys got ass kissers EVERYWHERE. Disturbing.

I worked WITH actors at a talent management company when I first moved to L.A. Some of what Joe says is soooo true. Being an actor in LA is basically non-stop job interviews and trying to sell yourself every day.
But I will say, once I got out of that industry, life in L.A. felt very different and I don’t really feel that the people outside the entertainment world are like that at all. My non-actor / non-movie industry friends are all totally authentic, down to earth folks. There’s less pressure to conform outside of that “Hollywood” world.
As soon as I left California I felt so different , I realized how shitty LA truly is

I live 50 miles inland of LA. I get to watch local plays and musicals by some of the greatest talent. These are the people that know they won’t make the big times, have moved on to other livelihoods and are in love with acting and singing. They seem emotionally healthy and are super friendly and approachable.
Joe's take on the acting world bears little resemblance to reality. He's an entertainer, picking edge cases and that's fine. I've certainly met narcissistic weirdos but most actors are normal people, the good ones being the most chill, self actualized, and socially aware folks out there. These tend to be theatre actors who love the craft, literature and are naturally curious about their fellow man.
Local theater is good like that. The actors work day jobs but they really love their craft so they do it. And sure, it's not Broadway, but it's fun enough to watch.

I'm an actor in Cleveland, OH. I did a SAG film about 10 years ago, and was eligible to join the union, never did. Never had any interest in moving to LA because my family is here. Local theater, resident theater, which does worthwhile work - the great playwrights, as well as some not so great playwrights, who wrote extremely entertaining things, George S Kaufman being an example - is an extraordinary asset for a community. This whole thing should have been over 4/20. People like the EX HIll are part of the coverup and pro vax. mRNA vax inventor says current vax is unsafe. I knew it came from lab at start and it didn't take long to see the way out on the news. Most people don't know how to watch the news. Joe only just found out and I saw before his 2 guests. News in Australia and Broward County FL. 1 plus 1 equal cure.
Reminds me of Johnny "Drama" on Entourage..

Pretty depressing, but it sounds like Las Vegas. They're gambling for riches in a different way, and overestimating their talent like other gamblers overestimate their luck.
Yes. Exactly. But it's not Las Vegas and the gamblers, it's Las Vegas and gaming.
I live in LA and I’ve met several people like that trying to make it. The problem is that they don’t know when to stop trying and end up becoming homeless.
Clark County is like LA NOW, because 80% of our population is from LA County.

I'm born and raised in la. While this might be true for the entertainment industry, most people from la are normal ass people and are not that political. It's the people who move here and feel they need to reinvent them selves that are like this. In my experience anyway.
This is true, I'm 37 yo, African American, born and raised in LA, Republican AF.
Dated an actress once. . . Told me that many actresses sleep with Assistant directors and Directors for more lines (more lines = more 💵), also that drugs are peddled every where. And yep, pedophilia is spoken to be normalized I wanted to vomit 🤮 when I heard the stories.
@@winstonsmith6204 you didn't date a actress bruh. Stop telling UA-cam fables to make a point. I think we already knew people sleep around to further their career, any career.
I was going to say something like this. He is spot on about the entertainment industry but us locals aren't really like this. Fair to say Joe probably didnt mingle with the blue collar crowd when he was living here.
Yeah I’ve visited LA and most people seem normal.
From my experience, everyone in LA is extremely fake and trying to be someone they’re not. Even the people who probably try to not be like that end up getting caught up in the oneupmanship.
It’s not my kind of place and I’ve traveled all across the country and been across Europe, south & North America, Asia and Australasia. I can’t think of many places that I haven’t enjoyed visiting, but I just hate disingenuous people.
The problem with LA is THAT PEOPLE LIKE JOE ROGAN LIVE THERE!!!!!
It’s not just like that in Hollywood, any area of the arts is like that. There’s so much subjectivity and competition, you can’t afford to offend with an unacceptable opinion.
Joe Rogan (younger) was a perfect Tony Danza type. All the sitcom casting directors had 'We're looking for a Tony Danza type' in their notes.
I thought the same. Young Tony Danza type with a little more muscles.
That song Lost in Hollywood by System of a Down is some real shit. This place eats lives.

😆 🤣 😂 Joe is spot on about actors willing to do and say anything to be LIKED because that's their livelihood. In Hollywood, authenticity is a vice, not a virtue.
Joe reveals the reason he left LA and what he envisions he can turn Austin into.

Austin is already a Portland enclave in Texas. Thankfully, there have been studies showing that red-state-to-blue-state transplants are typically conservative.

@@TheBigblumonkey then what’s the point of being there
I honestly think that celebs become a mouth piece for the hollywood agenda. If they don’t say what they’re told, their careers are over. So, I think it extends beyond people just trying to get into show biz. Look at how many celebs change their “viewpoints” once they become famous.
I was in SoCal a couple of months ago and we went to take my mom to a dermatologist for her skin condition. I looked on the directory at the hospital building and more than half the building were plastic surgeons. I asked my brother's gf about it and she rolled her eyes and said welcome to southern California.
"A completely non natureal environment, its usually a conference room in a production office. And you're in this non natural environment with these smug people who have this massive amount of power over you. And it shapes the way people communicate." So a job interview?
Yeah, it sounds like a corporate job interview to me. Sounds exactly like a job interview during poor economic times with a competitive market.
Except the demand for jobs is always massively outweighed by those seeking them. Think about the job market now. I've literally seen managers begging people to come work for them, with or without experience. That doesn't happen in Hollywood. There's always another narcissist waiting to cut your throat for a chance to get in..
Exactly. This was my thought as well. That is not exclusive to Hollywood. I work in corporate America and it is exactly the same thing there. Like 100 percent
@@Nick-kb2jc hundred percent.
Yes clearly Joe has never had a job interview and lucked out with his first shows.
fantastic interview. good people!❤🙏
Joe Rogan is a big example of 'being authentic is the Best' 💪
I like that Joe clearly understands and feels for the people who don't make it in Hollywood, who keep trying to get onboard that ship and never succeed. It's a tragedy and a waste, but if people understood that the struggle to succeed was a success, things might be better.
This was an inspirational episode, since I'm dealing with depression, I find Joe's methods sensible. I really do think you can't fix things mentally, you really need to get moving and accumulate like an avalanche.
You can build momentum! It is very doable for everyone with determination and commitment.
Learn the vocabulary. That's the first & most important step. Verbally use the lingo, too.
I remember my buddies and I once had a conversation about how popularity can have a psychological impact on someone by making/breaking them.
