First Days In Utah Fishing And Trying to Figure Stuff Out

  • In preparation for our trip to Alaska where we intend to do a lot of fishing I wanted to get a system together while living out of the car. Cleaning, cooking, and cleaning up your gear is easy when you have a home to get back to but when everything will be from out of the car and with the ever present threat of grizzly bears sniffing out any fish scent from my car I really wanted to find the best procedures and gear in order to minimize any lingering fish scent in the car.
Why not spend a month fishing while I visit Utah? I got an annual nonresident license and I'm off to fish as much as I can in order to learn as much as I can and get my gear tuned down well enough to actually catch some fish. I've been watching a lot of UA-cam videos and staring at a lot of PDFs about fish identification so I think I'm ready.

You did good Jay learning how to size the rod and line and lure. Very nice trout! Try casting over hand, like throwing a baseball. Rotate your wrist so the palm of your hand in facing down. Snap your wrist as you release the line. Then let your rod tip follow the lures trajectory, following thru, as the lure contacts the water, your rod tip should be pointing down at the lure. This should improve the length of your cast. I've cooked fresh trout like you did and it's delicious! Buy a dip net to help land your fish. Way to go!!!

Yep, been practicing everything you mentioned. As I reach back sometimes I go too far with my wrists and I snag something. I even managed to hook my jacket and some bushes.

@@JayWandersOut I followed along as you thru hiked the AT and have been watching ever since. Your channel is very enjoyable to watch and I often share it with my family and friends. As for fishing, I still snag things too😂 You're doing great Jay! Where are you going next? Thanks so much for your reply!!!

6' medium action rod, 10 mono, and and little trout lures 😆Yeah, I'm not surprised your casts were short.
If that new rod is a fiberglass rod, that might be making things a little trick. They bend really far down the blank. That's called a slow action. Tricky to cast in my experience. You should be able to feel the rod load up with tension on the back cast before forward casting. Also, a minor thing, when you're not fishing, it's good to keep the lures pinned to the rod at that little metal loop near the handle. Never inside one of the eyes. You could damage the eyelet that way.

Too bad Sportsman's Warehouse wasn't open - it's a great store. Lots of great things to do in and around Cedar City, UT!

I have never fly fished but it seems to me that people would get the line out on a cast and then choose to keep it in the air. Moving the rod over the shoulder while hand pulling out a bit of line from the reel. Keep it in the air casting forward and back, on the bringing the rod back over the shoulder again pull a little more line out of the reel keeping the line in the air repeating until you got enough flying line that will reach your drop point. I basically cheat, I have a friend in Kodiak that does set netting for his fish and he fills my freezer a bit every year. I went down to Kodiak for a week once to help him out fishing and look around, beautiful country. Kings, Reds, Halibot , and Cod. Still a bit early for Alaska’s best weather. Snow intermittent at 500’ , all trails around Anchorage go up. 3.5-6,000’ to some peaks. Shoot for June. Fairbanks may warm up earlier than Anchorage do to longer Sun and not as much mountains. Zion is beautiful and pretty easy hiking on Red rock.

We plan on entering Alaska at the very end of May or early June and head towards Tok and Fairbanks first. I hope to catch some pike and burbot whole out there! I won't use my kayak until it really warms up though. I'm still hesitant about catching a big pike or lake trout while sitting in a kayak though. We'll see.

I recently moved to Utah from Washington state and was stunned to learn that Strawberry Reservoir has Kokanee salmon, which apparently are landlocked sockeye. I thought my salmon fishing days were over after moving to the desert, so I'm prett happy about that. Both my son and I have gen5 4Runners and have done a couple overlanding trips with some friends, including one near Moab. Will be heading to the Dugway Geode Beds in late May. Would be awesome to run into you out there somewhere.

Crazy right about the kokannee? I didn't know that until this year. There are some other lakes as well. Utah's web site is nice since you can filter by type of fish you want and it'll show you just those bodies of water. dwrapps.utah.gov/fishing

That’s a good-one Jay! Just a tip.., casting a spinning rod/reel with both hands will enable you to cast further and with greater control.

Thanks for the tip! Yep, I also learned this as my right arm was and wrist were sore for a while. With both hands there's less tension on my wrists.

Sounds like a fun trip .. never been to Otter Creek but should be plenty of info available local .... Walmart and every gas station out there sells fishing tackle .. shouldn't have trouble finding working lures or flies .. my favorite method is a fly on a leader ,3-5 ft. (4lb. fluorocarbon) in front of a water filled bubble with 6-8lb. braid or mono line .... vary the amount of water in it to give weight for your cast .... with a spinning rod , a lightweight to medium is good for all trout species ,,,,your technique is fine ... Utah has some awesome fish .... Have someone local show you how to clean ,, and debone a trout after cooking ..... generally don't fillet or crosscut this size trout ,, the skeletal /rib bones are a nuisance ... I'm sure you found out trying to eat it like that .......... Save your 10lb. or even heavier weight line and get a stronger rod , at least a medium or medium heavy for the Alaskan waters (rivers) and maybe heavier spoons ,,1/4 oz. to 3/4 oz. ....,,not knowing what you have .. or plan to fish ..... if going to use a guide in Alaska , they will provide your gear ....
.... Be careful in the rock canyon's in Utah ,, check on weather ,, getting to see rains and slot canyon's are no place to be ....... Stay Safe ...

I got a reel with 20lb braid and some 10lb fluoro and 10lb mon for a lrader. I also have some wire leaders. I do have a light/medium rod as well and I think it'll be good enough. The biggest fish I'll be going for are pike, burbot, and lake trout. I think it'll manage. I'll mostly be fishing from shore until the weather warms up as well and then I'll break out the kayak.
