what a great conversation! holy shit.... I have been thinking for the last two years how Zinn's book needs to become a board game! It was a dream first design for myself in my head and scrap book but so great to hear you are doinnnggg it! Did you reach out to Zinn Project on it for support, endorsement or buy in?

One of the red flags I find when I see people arguing that they are allowed free speech or against cancel culture are at the same time restricting someones elses free speech or seeking to "cancel" someone. So I rarely find these arguements are really used in good faith and are just an attempt at deflection.

Agree mostly. But to tell a culture how they think and how they work and not expect blow back. Oof. That's a tough one. It's sort of tying things together with assumptions of a culture you have targeted yourself but excludes yourself. So to say you're fit to be an expert of that culture... I can see the frustration there. But also, you can't be every color gender and culture but you have a consulting job to do. But at what point does the consultant need a consultant? I think once assumptions start being made of their culture, even if they are white. You say several times in this video something to the effect of "and im not saying you, im not saying all white people". But that's generalizing, because youre making assumptions about the majority of a culture. Because if we are going to say this is how this culture works that im not a part of, isn't that part of the racism problem? You point out why something can be good for a culture to see or why it could be negative toward another culture, but then focus on why specifically generalized white people's perspective is wrong about it. At least that's the impression I got. With that said I agree with most of the things said but not with generalizing a color to fight for diversity of others. Makes no sense.

The cultural tendencies are pervasive. What I discuss in this episode is not universal, but occurs often enough as to merit discussion. Further, even if not all white publishers do some of the things I mention, the ones that don’t tend to tolerate, minimize, and excuse those that do. It’s a self-reinforcing system in a lot of ways. In a lot of ways, it can only be clearly seen from the outside, which is why I’m saying something.
If anyone wants to critique the particulars that I present, that’s all good. But I take issue with the idea that we can’t critique cultural systems. Especially the ones that got the power.

@@ShelfStories I know you're out there trying to do good and definately are. I'm just saying. Making assumptions can be a slippery slope to stereotyping and the thing you're fighting against I feel like. I know you mean well, and probably right with some assumptions but doesn't make it ok. I do enjoy your videos. Keep it up. You're doing great work and I dont mean to be a downer.
